Lovely place, warm comfortable, and a great relaxed atmosphere. Staff are attentive, chatty, not pushy, knowledgeable & very welcoming. The menu is just the right size, small enough so you know it’s fresh not microwaved frozen junk, and big enough to have something for everyone and making your choice a tough decision as it all sounds delicious. The food, all three courses for all three of us, was absolutely spot on. Tasty, portion sizes were good, garnish salads were fresh as can be and faultless. Beef Stroganoff with wild rice was excellent, steak pie was a real pie with pastry top and bottom, veggie burger was moist, well garnished with very tasty relish. The desserts were an absolute triumph, orange cheesecake which is one of the best things I’ve eaten in years, a white chocolate roulade which my wife said was fantastic. Water is available at the table for no charge which is always a big thumbs up, drinks menu is comprehensive and well priced. Overall bill was excellent value for money. Book a table to avoid disappointment, as the place was full and was having to turn people away throughout our visit, although it might be worth chancing for a table just in case your luck is in. A must if you’re eating out in Inveraray

We tried to get in Saturday but unfortunately it was fully booked, so we booked for Sunday, we were greeted by lovely staff and shone to our table, be aware that the restaurant is cosy and not a lot of stretching between tables, the menue is great with a lot to choose from and ther is a specials board We ordered our meal and drinks. The food arrived pipping hot and a decent portion all home cooked and delicious, this place is not fine dinning so if your looking for pipes and whistles this is not for you, on the other hand if it's a good ho.e cooked meal and a pleasant atmosphere then go no further, the food the staff are all first class and we look forward to our next visit later this week we hope.

Our B&B host recommended us this little gem for dinner. After reading the reviews, we gave it a go. We were not disappointed — quite the opposite. Cozy place, really good food, and friendly service. You couldn't expect more. It's easy to miss if you just pass by while strolling through the village, but it's highly recommended. As it's a small place, booking in advance is highly recommended.

From the outside this place looks very quaint and inviting but Don't be fooled !We decided to have the home made soup which was lentil and the toasted sandwich. The menu offered cheese OR ham toastie but you could not have both without paying extra .My partner ordered the ham one and I asked for tuna mayonnaise as they offered this filling in a bread roll but not on a toastie.I was promptly told that this was not an option so I could only have the cheese or ham on a toastie .Oh how I wish we had got up and left at that point ! When the soup arrived it was awful .The lentils were hard and it was very salty.I think I found one piece of carrot which seemed to be the only vegetable in the bowl. When the toastie arrived it was just one slice of cheap ham between two slices of bread which had only one side toasted. It was not toasted in a toastie machine.A very small handful of supermarket bag salad that was limp to say the least (it was not freshly made )completed the so called lunch. The waitress was very cold indeed and I am sorry to say that this is the worst place we have had lunch in a very long time .My partner was really annoyed as he was looking forward to a nice lunch and it was awful.I also heard another foreign gentleman question the menu stating that it was not clear what he was paying for .Take our advice and avoid We will never return here !

Found this place just off the Main Street and only a couple of tables were taken so thought we would give it a try. Friendly staff and nice wee seating area. However think it should be named a cafe and not a restaurant. Menu is more cafe like than restaurant. Good choice though. Think it is over priced! £1.70 a can of soft juice! Looks like they buy some of their cakes from Costco so not all homemade which is disappointing. Lunch was lovely! Food great and atmosphere was nice also. To be honest if I went back to Inveraray I would maybe go back as the food was nice but think they need to reduce their prices to attract more customers as everywhere else today had every table taken but not this place.Very clean place with great staff providing great service.

We went for dinner on a rainy weekday evening - were the only ones in the place - but it was cozy and nice - you go down a few steps, there are maybe 9 tables, old stone walls - the modern pictures on the walls seemed out of place, would have preferred something more old fashioned and quaint - but it wasn't that important. - food was fine, prices not bad. We weren't crazy about the waitress sitting behind us the whole time , reading the paper. But all in all, it's worth a visit.

Not fancy or glamourous - head to Loch Fyne for that - but just what my tired family needed. We had big Scottish breakfasts that set us up for the rest of the day that were well cooked, quickly served and good value. Our 9 year old now complains that other breakfasts are "not like that one in Scotland". My wife and I visited Inveraray in February. We stayed at the George Hotel, which was great, as always. We had dinner at the Indian Restaurant at the foot of the main street. It's called Ban Diuc, it's great, go there! Now the point of this review...., lunch at The Cottage opposite the George... we both ordered their macaroni and cheese at the Cottage. I would liken it to something you would get in the " City Bakeries " in the 1970s, we honestly couldn't bring ourselves to eat more than about four mouthfuls. We drank our wine and departed. The experience was so bad that we struggled to get out the door before laughing. Once back at the bar in the George, we cringed over our discussion about what European tourists, from the likes of France and Italy, would make of that place. Best described as what your six year old might threaten you with after a first cookery class at school.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the restaurant entrance is down a little alley so it's easy to miss. I would recommend missing it. It's more of a diner than a restaurant, and not a very good one at that. I ordered the duck (which makes sense in a restaurant but not in a diner), and it came out undercooked in the middle and dry on the outside. The boiled potatoes were good, but then again those are pretty basic (peel and boil). While the food was being prepared my wife and I could hear the microwave oven going, and we both just looked at each other. The service by the waitress (owner?) was decent and she seemed to be trying so I do give her marks for that, but the quality of the food was poor which ultimately is the most important thing to me. My sense if that if we had ordered cheeseburgers and fries, or an omelet, it would have come out fine since that would probably be in the "mainline" of what gets prepared there. Perhaps they just don't cook and serve the duck often enough. I don't agree with the other reviewers that Inveraray itself is a bad place - we had a lot of fun at the jail and the castle, and just walking around the small town was nice and scenic. However, this review is for the restaurant and not the town, so I have to give it only two circles. This was unfortunately one of our second worst meal in 9 days in Scotland, and I would not recommend it to others.

The restaurant is in a semi hidden location in Inverary so it is not difficult to miss it. The food is not good although it appears very quickly at the table suggesting that it may have been pre-prepared and reheated. Not enjoyable but that sums up Inverary - not good but a reasonable toilet stop.

My family and Ihave been going to this restuarant al least twice a year for the past 15 years. The staff remember and welcome us. The food is wholesome and delicious. We have never had a 'bad' meal. When we are thinking of a day away the request is "Inverary please, so we can go for mac cheese!" The decor has updated since we were last there. It is very quiet and maybe lacks a bit of atmosphere, but it's good points outweigh the one thing it lacks.

We, my wife and I have visited Inveraray many times but have never come across this little gem of a restaurant before. It is hidden away a bit of the main street and it was delightful. It is between the Bank (at the top of the street) and the whiskey shop.We just needed a light snack to keep us going and everything in this cute basement restaurant fitted the bill. We found the "packages" available to be very cleverly marketed. We had the Apple pie combination, i.e. a delicious fresh apple pie, pastry a delight, tasty and light with cream and a delicious large cup of coffee. All the food was fresh and organic but for us it was just downright tasty. So impressed I thought it was a new restaurant and to my surprise when I asked, I was told proudly that "No we have been open for the past seventeen years". Highly recommended and while we just had apple pie, they serve a "proper" lunch and dinner.Complements all round, well deserved.

Such a disappointment when you enter this 'restaurant'. The stairs clearly weren't expected and may be a problem for some, although there is a disabled toilet should you need it.The cottage hasn't been sympathetically decorated, varnished wood looks so dated now, and the design layout has killed off any sentimentality that would have existed in its chocolate box glory days. The menu lacks imagination, the scones were bland, the tea served in a knackered stainless steel pot, and the latte a let down given the price. There was only one other table taken the afternoon we went in so its a shame more isn't being done to improve the footfall into this restaurant.

Have been twice now, and it seems to have gone downhill recently. Food is cheap and plentiful but quite basic, nothing special. The decor is dated and drab though you could argue it gives a traditional feel. Polite service but quite slow.

We stopped in Inveraray on our way to Oban and found this tiny little restaurant. We were very pleased. Even though it was very small, there was one table we were lucky enough to get. Our server was very friendly and our food was bought to us very quickly. It was delicious! Many people tried to get in, but had to leave because no tables opened up very quickly during the lunch hour. Everything about our experience here was top-notch.

Trato familiar, comida casera. Buena relación calidad/precio. Opciones de menú para niños, aunque al estilo británico.

Very friendly service and great value for money. The mixed seafood dish in a creamy tomato sauce was to die for ! Big portion and full of seafood.

The menu has plenty of choice but husband opted for a angus cheeseburger and I opted for a scampi tea. For afters we had banana split and carrot cake. Including drinks the bill came to £24 which we thought was reasonable. The decor was a bit outdated but there was service with a smile. There are nicer places to eat in Inveraray but those also come with higher price-tags, so if you're looking for a hearty meal then The Cottage is an ideal place to come for a bite to eat.

We had a Ham Salad. When it came I gasped at the amount of food on the plate. 4 big slices of thick Ham, mixed Salad,Coleslaw, egg mayonnaise, beetroot, tomatoes, grated cheese. I could not manage to eat it all. All this for about £7 well worth the money.

I come there for more than 10 years, whenever I visit Scotland. It is a small hidden place on Church Square in Inveraray. But all the time I've been there - I enjoyed it even more than those big Restaurants in the scotish capitol...The Menu consists of very tasty Seafood and Fish dishes, of traditional Cottage arangements, daily specials and sweet scotish deserts...This August I came back to Inveraray - to celebrate my 10-years-traveling-to-Scotland anniversary - and of course I returned to The Cottage Restaurant as well! This time with my girlfriend, who has been there for her first time. (yet)It is a very kind and friendly atmosphere - the quality of the Menu is simply great - and it is situated in one of the most beautiful small hidden Places in Scotland! what more can I say... (?)oh - maybe one more thing - If you go there, ask for The Cottage Combo - that will make you come back for sure!

i visited the cottage on 19th of augusta lovely little place not to big or smallfirst the prices i found these very resonable compared to some places i have visitedthe service very polite and helpfull given plenty of time to browse the menu i settled for chicken curry it came in two separate dishes unlike some places where you get it all on one plate the servings were ample very tasty in fact i would go as far as to say better than some main restaurants in the cottage they use the breast of the chicken diced in strips and the sauce was not to hot although i was asked if i would like it spicer it was just right

This 'restaurant' is basically a greasy-spoon cafe and a very poor one at that. Everything, from the deep fried starter to the mixed veg, to the rubber apple pie desert came out of the freezer. Any wonder the service is fast - the food takes no time to prepare. My partner was horrified, having ordered fish and chips at restaurant prices, to be served low-end supermarket quality frozen crumbed fish. We ordered wine at restaurant prices to be served a carafe of gut-rot which had come out of a bag-in-a-box. The waitress was pleasant enough but in line with a previous reviewer we did hear her give out to some customers who dared to complain. Our table was 'sticky' and while we tried to find some redeeming features (the fried haggis starter was ok!) this was a truly awful dining experience and as it was our first night in Scotland didn't bode well for the remainder of our stay. Fortunately things improved as we moved on.

My Partner and I including six year old son decided to have lunch at 'The Cottage Restaurant’ on Saturday May the 14th 2011. At first it seemed a quiet quaint place with reasonable prices in comparison to other little café’s in the town.I had decided to order was advertised as fresh homemade soup, My Partner had order a BLT melt and we had ordered a cheese and ham toastie for my son, as well as what was advertised as a fruit shoot, which turned out to be some cheap version in a battered bottle. My soup came before everybody’s order and can only be described as a luke warm gluttonous bowl of slop with a few dried herbs and vegetables to make it look a little less grey; I think a blended pot noodle would have been far tastier and more appealing! There was no seasoning as to speak of.When the waitress, who had seemed friendly when we first arrived, brought our tea and coffee over and my partner asked her if we could swap it for something else as it didn’t’ taste or look like homemade soup. Her response was quite shocking and had the whole establishment staring at us including the other staff. She raised her voice and started shouting “I beg to differ, I can assure you that is most defiantly home made soup, and if you don’t like it you can just leave!!” at that she snatched the drinks away and stormed of to the kitchens shouting at the top of her voice now “Cancel table 24’s order they are leaving!I was sat in shock for the first few seconds as I couldn’t believe her response, neither could my son who is Autistic as it frightened him and he looked wide eyed and close to tears it certainty effected his mood for the rest of the day.I did ask her to come back over as I wanted to speak to the manager she told me rather proudly that she was the manager and that everyone is entitled to their opinions, but how dare we tell her that the soup wasn’t home made.We made our exit with her still continuing with her to shout at my partner, who was calmly trying to tell her he had been a chef for 20 years and he had never seen soup or service like that, to which she retorted her chef had been one for 30 years! My advise is don’t go there yes there prices may be a little cheaper than other establishments in the area but with food and service like that, I’m surprised they still function as a business.

We found this restaurant tucked away down by the side of the RBS in the church square. What a delight to find such friendly service and good food at reasonable prices. The atmosphere was warm & welcoming and we enjoyed it so much that we went there for our evening meal for the 3 nights that we were in the area. The choice of food with the daily specials was excellent. The portions were generous, the service was fast and if you are a curry lover you must try there chicken curry that is has good as any Indian restaurant.

I call it Debbie's place - you'll know it when you see it! - said several of the locals on Islay. A large group of us visiting the island had spent the morning dotted across it doing various different activities. I'd asked in the brilliant Islay Natural History Trust where locally we could grab lunch and was directed to the Bruichladdich Mini Market. The place itself is run by Debbie, her mum and her sister. It's the ort of place that is the lifeblood of islands the world over - half grocery shop, half cafe - all welcoming. Debbie's sister was in charge when a group of 15 of us rocked up unannounced. This would normally not have been a problem - plenty of outside seating - but that particular day the ferry had been cancelled, along with much of the stock for the shop and cafe. Undeterred the staff there made us feel welcome and pulled together a lunch which went down very well with all - children and adults alike. Think sandwiches and toasties with great coffee and a good choice of cold drinks. They also serve some amazing cakes - I'm told the rocky road was fab, I know the chocolate cake was! Although initially under pressure when we all turned up, the staff seated us happily and we had all eaten within about 15 minutes of arriving.

Visited to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The setting on the shore of Loch Fyne overlooking the ruin of Castle Lachlan is stunning and we were able to enjoy a bottle of fizz outside our shepherds huts where we would be spending the night. After a late afternoon stroll to the castle ruins we were ready for our dinner. The tasting menu served in the evening is locally sourced and is probably the best I have ever tasted. We chose the wine pairing which was excellent and presented beautifully. After a great nights sleep breakfast is delivered to your accommodation and this is another delight. Cannot fault this place
