The Contented Sole in Scottish Borders

Went here during the first easing of the restrictions. Just fish and chips - nothing special. Steady menu and lovely service. Nothing bad.

Really regretted having booked here when we came to collect our keys as it’s a pretty basic looking pub. However the other restaurants were booked out and didn’t take dogs, so off to the back bar we headed. Decor is very basic and the football was on - but actually the male members of the party enjoyed that.Food was actually pretty good. My fish was light and crispy and chips were edible if not amazing. Our son really enjoyed his steak. Husbands seafood platter looked a bit like a deep fried mish mash, but he said the scampi was great as was the fish. Service was excellent as well.I assume the restaurant is a bit more nicely decorated, prices are a good £3-5 cheaper per dish than the other local places.

Sitting outside in the sunshine we had simple fish and chips. Yes, the peas were tinned, yes the chips were frozen but, you know what, that didn't matter because the fish was absolutely beautiful, fresh, delicious and with light, crisp batter. Just lovely, and excellent value for money.Such a stark contrast to a place we visited last night where we were presented with over-priced, quite nasty food from a menu which promised great things and delivered disappointment.

Visited this little gem today for our first indoor pub meal following lockdown. We arrived as our little family and the whole experience was excellent. The lady was very helpful, the service was excellent and the meals were excellent we would recommend and will definitely return

The only place we found in Eyemouth that was pet friendly to have dinner. Lovely, friendly staff and food brilliant.

Read reviews, sounded good. However not on this occasion. Restaurant very quiet, to be expected on week night out of season. Gammon steak was average, lasagne was the worst meal I have ever had put in front of me. I returned it as it was inedible. No sign of tomato sauce, bechamel sauce and only a few grains of mince. A pile of oddly coloured lasagne pasta piled with oily melted cheese. The waiter was absolutely lovely, very polite and efficient. He was extremely apologetic even though it was not his fault. Will possibly return to try food again but not at the moment.

On a day trip to Eyemouth popped in for lunch with our two dogs .Excellent service from the lady behind the bar. I think she may had been the landlady. I had fish and chips and my partner had the scampi both meals was excellent. We did sit outside which could do with proper table and chairs but that's a small niggle the main thing was the service , cleanness and food which was excellent

Not the best experience for our first night in Eyemouth. The bar was packed, no social distancing in there at all that’s for sure, so was relieved to find the restaurant was in another doorway and upstairs. There were only 3 other tables occupied and all seemed to be having problems with their orders, a table of 4 only got 3 meals and had to wait for the other one! To be fair the waitress was very apologetic and said things seemed to be going wrong that night. That being said, we had no problems and the food was fine. Doubt we will book there again tho.

Just had our dinner at The Contented Sole lovely welcoming place both had 2 courses and it was amazballs. Very friendly place defo 5☆

Delicious food and a fast service in a clean well run establishment. Even had a chance to see some seals in the harbour before desert.

I visited the pub whilst away on holiday with my family. The pub had a nice atmosphere and the staff were friendly. The food was excellent, I would highly recommend this place.

Visited as we were staying in the Old Coach House apartments which are adjoined to the pub. Table for 4 was offered on an incredibly busy summers evening in Eyemouth. The wait staff were great, really good with our children and every request was catered for. The food was just superb. I had haddock and chips and my wife had a special which was steak and chips. The steak was enormous and came with onion rings, peas, mushroom, tomato. She asked for it medium rare and it was absolutely spot on. No blood seeping but pink throughout and tender as any steak I've ever tried. The kids meals included a pot of ice cream which was most welcome. Could not fault the Contented Sole for a quick pint in welcome surroundings or a family meal.

Food was delicious & tasted fresh and home made. Staff were friendly and service was good considering they were short staffed and the restaurant was busy. Would highly recommend.

Attracted by the menu on the Web site I was very disappointed to find that it was not available. COVID19 distancing minimal at 1m.if that!

We ended up in here after a lovely day on the beach, was worried by the name that it may be mainly fish but was totally surprised and wowed! The lovely lady managed to fit us in the bar area (2 adult and 2 children) At the moment it is table service for drinks and food but we were offered drinks promptly. The food was quick to come and absolutely delicious, we had steak and lasagne and both cooked to perfection. The kids meals were very reasonably priced given that they included a drink and ice cream and both plates were cleared.We all came away agreeing this was the best meal we had all holiday.Well worth a visit to the area and the pub.

Stayed in one of the Contented Sole's flats for 3 nights whilst visiting friends. Clean & all needs catered for. Perfect location, and how lovely to wake up & see seals in the harbour...the pub itself is so cute & quaint ( how pubs used to be before the big chains took over). Owners & Staff were fab and food was good .Will definitely return & would recommend to anyone who wants a bit of peace & quiet , yet is a perfect location if you want to go sightseeing ...with Newcastle, Edinburgh etc all in close proximity. Thanks to "The Contented Sole"

Good food but a long wait for food... problem with ordering system which meant we were waiting over 30 minutes.

Scampi was the best I've had, it was a delicious scampi salad. Steak pie tasty but could be doing with a bit more steak. Great pub grub after a beautiful walk. Dogs allowed in the bar, friendly staff and very helpful. We will be back next year.

I was so disappointed with the portion of fish I received. I ordered the light bite haddock but I didn't expect it to be as small as it was it made a fish finger look massive very discontented

We were exploring the harbour and came across this cute pub. Loved the low ceilings, great location, and one of the best fish and chips we have ever had and we’re from the east coast of Canada. Bartender was working alone and was quite friendly. Great service and delicious food! Loved that they allowed dogs too!

Stopped off here for a family lunch while out walking the coastal path from Coldhingham Bay to Eyemouth. Cosy and welcoming pub/restaurant with a large variety of food on the menu. Staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant was busy mid-afternoon, but we managed to get the last table up the back. We had looked around a few other places before-hand, but not many were pet and child friendly. The food was excellent and didn't take long to arrive. Ideal place for a rest before heading back up the coast. We were also treated to a show outside in the harbour, as the local seals were swimming about and showing off. Looking forward to our next visit!

A pleasant evening here but the gammon steak was a little too pink for me to enjoy and, crucially, the plate had not been warmed! These are two important aspects of serving Gammon steak: it MUST have evidence of a final 5 minutes on the grillThe keg bitter was good

Decent Pint but Mediocre Food. Unfortunately. Very disappointing bearing in mind when we Ordered there was no one else in the Restaurant. Not only was the food insipid but it wasn't even warm.

Just back from having lunch at this warm, welcoming pub on the harbour front at Eyemouth. Fish could not have been fresher and in the lightest of batters. Only complaint---the chips were so good I ate them all and am now very full!

Went to contented sole for the first time on a visit to eye mouth. What a lovely pub. Really nice lady behind the bar who I think was the landlady and great local people with whom I had a great chat with very knowledgeable regarding local history. Super pub which retains traditions .well worth a visit

Welcoming old pub. Very quaint and very comfortable inside. Friendly bartenders and locals. Great location on harbor. Excellent real ales on tap. Said by locals to have very good pub food and fish and chips. Recommended pub.

Visited here for my birthday meal at the weekend. We were seated in a back room with no atmosphere. Radio station playing loudly. Food was mediocre to say the least. Very anaemic looking garlic bread, scampi that was more batter than scampi - husband actually complained and had the meal taken off the bill. Kids spaghetti appeared to be microwaved, my son only ate the chips despite spaghetti being a form favourite. The fish pie off the specials board was OK but nothing to shout from the rooftops about. Sat for at least 25 minutes after finishing our meal and eventually my husband got up and went to the bar to pay the bill as the two waitresses were standing chatting. I tend to think they had forgotten we were even there.

Looked forward to going back to this restaurant and wasn't disappointed. Food was good, service was great. Toni the waitress was very helpful and made sure our meal went smoothly.

We have been in this pub many times, it is a small but friendly place to sit and relax, meals are served but we have only had portions of chips to date, anyway the portions of chips were plentiful and perfectly cooked. The price of drinks are very fair, the staff are very friendly as are the locals. We use this family friendly bar every time we visit Eyemouth, great wee pub.

Had an evening meal and a lunch here while visiting Eyemouth for a long weekend. Excellent food and value for money and really friendly staff. Cater for my gluten free needs too. Always dine here when visiting Eyemouth.

We visited here last week for lunch, on arrival we were greeted with a very friendly and warm welcome. Our group chose scampi, fishcakes and 2 lasagne (1 small, 1 regular). They have smaller portions of the main courses also on the menu which is ideal if you dont fancy a big meal. The lasagne were served with salad and chips and was beautiful. The scampi and fishcakes were very fresh and tasted amazing! The staff were friendly and provided excellent service. Dogs are also welcome! We will be back soon!

Popped in for lunch on our way to caravan park. Staff were lovely very friendly. We had the haddock ... beautiful....fish was very fresh and the batter divine!!

Having seen the good reviews on trip advisor, we stopped off tonight for dinner. Great menu choices, reasonable prices and great bar prices. Our choices were Homemade Lasagne and Seafood Platter. 10/10 for both meals. Great portions, very fresh and tasty and very good service. The toilets were exceptionally clean. We hope to visit again.

We arrived without booking and were unsure what to expect but what a great find. The girl serving was very friendly and did wonderful job. The menu was a decent size and we had no trouble choosing both a starter and a mains. Food was lovely and a good price. Would reccomend this place to anyone.

Loved this pub, went upstairs not expecting much from what looked like a small old fashioned pub at the end of the harbour. Staff were really friendly, food choices excellent. Especially like how the meal options include lighter portions plus childs or toddlers, with toddler plate still being quite big and included drink and ice cream for £2.50! Tried to eat here again but was fully booked all night.

Turned up without booking on Saturday evening - was busy but had table upstairs. Modest sized menu but food was very good 1 x homemade steak pie, 1 x fish platter.

Had the pleasure of a lively Friday night in the Contented Sole. We were in Eyemouth celebrations my dads birthday. We were made very welcome by the landlord, staff and locals!! Had a bash at the quiz(don't ask) and played bingo with a deck of cards?? Really good fun and will call in when in Eyemouth once again

We live in coldstream, visit Eyemouth almost weekly, we must of walked past this place thousands of times over the years & never even noticed it was there.

As always top notch food served here. Never once been let down or had bad service in the resturaunt. Maybe the staff from the bantry should visit to see how the job should be done.

We have been popping in to the Contented Sole for years any time we are in Eyemouth. It’s a great, friendly wee pub with excellent food. It caters for all diets and even offers toddlers portions- which is a great touch. Never had a bad meal yet!

We stopped off for lunch today based on tripadvisor reviews. We sat outside to enjoy the sun before the anticipated rain arrived. The outside seating area was under par. We had a bin at the back of us and lorries impacting on our harbour views. The staff were lovely and fish was fabulous.

The food was excellent, the prices were excellent, staff friendly and polite, excellent all round. Our friends are there two nights in a row. Group of seven of us are there with everyone ordering different meals. All of us delighted with our meals, drinks, service. Thank you for looking after us.

Arrived in Eyemouth and parked out side. Went in for a beer to be greeted by a lovely barmaid who made us feel very welcome. Decided to have lunch. Fish and chips and Scampi and chips, both meal were cooked to perfection. Excellent food at excellent prices. The real ale is clearly looked after as the ale was brilliant. The service was excellent. Give it a try you won’t be disappointed.

We used this bar for 2 days whilst in Eyemouth,the staff and locals are so friendly as are the staff and it has a good choice of food. Thanks to you all.

We visited as two couples for a friends birthday meal, after hearing really good reviews of the food and service. The birthday boy had Seafood Combo, the ladies had Scampi x chips and the other had Haddock x Chips. The girls just expected the normal small Scampi you purchase in the shops, and could not believe our eyes the size of the each portion. to be honest we had to pass some onto the boys. My husband really enjoyed his Haddock x chips also the Birthday boy was a little disappointed in his meal and said on his next return he is going for the Scampi . Lovely friendly bar and waiting staff and an end to a perfect day for the Birthday boy. We visited at 5pm on a Friday and had no bother getting a table, I would say to be on the safe side at rush hour and later evening you should book a table. We will be back asap. Also very good value for the money.

Visited with our three grandsons , food was good and good value for money. The service was excellent, the young waitress who served us was very pleasant and polite . All in all a pleasant experience.

All I could hear in the bar from the borderers was their racist comments about the English. Maybe they can't make up their minds as to whether they are Scots or English?

Visited Eyemouth on a quiet Monday in early July. Seemed a nice place to spend a couple of hours. It’s a working harbour so don’t expect quaint. Stopped at the Contented Sole for lunch. It’s harbour side and well positioned. The beers are good as is the food. After a light bite with local seafood, they split a main seafood combo as a sharing plate which was very obliging, not to mention very tasty.

Food excellent , service very good. Clean, cosy and friendly atmosphere. Dog friendly too. Free wifi if needed...Thanks to all.

The Barman could not have made us more welcome. Great service and very welcoming. We had a selection of dishes some to share, everything was of high quality. Very friendly atmosphere.

We just called in for a drink after exploring the sights of Eyemouth harbour. We found the Contented Sole to be cosy, friendly and served a great pint. We didn’t eat there but looking at the food coming out of the kitchen, it looked both appetising & delicious and at a reasonable price.

We popped in here for a few beers and it was a really lovely and friendly place. The staff were really nice and helpful and the other customers, I suspect who were regulars, were all really friendly and a good laugh. It is a really comfortable wee place. I will return soon.

Made to feel very welcome with our dogs and food was nice too. They were busy and had a really lovely atmosphere in there.

Lovely environment but the food wasn’t very good. Starters were ok, the lasagne was terrible. Obviously frozen which is fine but it was a bit dry on bottom, very small portion and congealed. My fiancé had the fish combo which was even worse. Handful of poor quality frozen prawns, squid rings that were chewy and greedy, and there didn’t appear to be any squid, it probably disintegrated. Tiny bit of salmon, 1 over cooked large prawn and the sauce was a pot of Heinz mayonnaise. Food is reasonably priced but if you don’t enjoy it, no point having it. It’s a shame as we liked the pub. Happy environment. Wouldn’t eat here again, but for a pint and a packet of nuts, game of cards it’s perfect.

We are not new to this restaurant but the same problem keeps reoccurring. Food is served on a cold plate and after a few bites, the food is cold. The peas were cold and hard from the start. The server, who was very friendly, asked us only when she collected the plates whether everything was OK. When we mentioned our feed back she was not happy.

We have been here several times. On a Saturday night, A Sunday night and a Monday night. The food looked great and we will try it soon. The beer was very good and kept very well. The staff are wonderful. Ents

Had a lovely meal here...the food was good and such friendly service. Sat in the downstairs bar which is dog friendly and had a lovely atmosphere. Hasn't got great kerbside appeal but don't be put off..its a great pub!!

Had a mid-week dinner here with family and were amazed at how busy it was. Then we had our meal and got the bill and all was explained - really excellent value and proper pub food. We loved the friendly staff and the way that everyone around us joined in with the conversation. It was like being in your own local. And even better, it's dog-friendly too.

Called into Eyemouth off the A1 purely by chance spoke to a local who suggested The Contented Sole as we had dogs , very friendly a great fish meal , great service will call in again

On Easter Sunday my husband and I stopped in the Contented Sole for lunch before we set off on a long drive south. The scampi was recommended, so we ordered a light bite for me and the standard portion for my husband. The meal was delicious, I have never before had scampi which had been battered on the premises. We both enjoyed every mouthful, and highly recommend the dish. In addition the service was polite, prompt and cheerful.

Good coffee and warm atmosphere, especially with the fire blazing. Very knowledgeable on sustainable coffee which he offers. Always freshly made, in house, pastries etc.

Went in on a Friday night and stayed for the quiz and the bingo and the play your cards it was fun and they keep a good pint.

We called at the Contented Soul whilst out for a walk, and it started raining. It was a pleasant suprise reasonably priced drinks lovely friendly service from the young lady behind the bar. We had a combo starter this was huge luckily we were hungry. My husband had the scampi ( which is very popular in other reviews) l had spinach and ricotta canaloni. The portions were enormous no room for pudding. Very reasonably priced excellent service definitely recommend.

This pub has held a place in my heart since I was a kid. My grandparents would bring me every weekend whilst at the caravan. For a cosy drink by the harbour it is ideal and reasonably priced. However it upsets me to say the food is of a very poor standard. I was served a chewy lukewarm steak That to be honest I could have cooked and presented better myself. I just did not understand the plate being full of chips greasy mushrooms and carrots? Is this a roast or a steak? Also very clear evidence of a microwave with the sauce and veg.

We were looking for a quiet local pub to have a meal and this fitted the bill completely. Drinks were very reasonably priced and we both ordered the tikka which came with rice and chips!!! Talk about living the dream! It was a delicious meal, the best curry we had had in a long time. Staff were friendly and there was a nice atmosphere. The menu was also labelled with gluten free and had several options available which was helpful for my gluten intolerant husband.

We went as 3A 2C had the option of ‘lighter meals’ rather than the usual nuggets and chips for the kids so that was a plus from the beginning. Seafood platter was excellent value. Only negative was the macaroni and cheese on the lighter meal as overcooked, but everyone else’s meal was spot on. Great service and most importantly reasonable priced drinks! Been coming here for over 30 years visiting the bar, but now we have discovered the restaurant will definitely be back to try more dishes.

Recommend this pub highly if you are in the area. Firstly the staff were very welcoming and attentive,the atmosphere and food was also excellent

The name of the restaurant drew us in. Friendly service and lovely view of the boats. 3 veggie choices and a couple of GF choices too. Highly recommend the spinach and ricotta cannelloni and the scampi - big portions too. Beautiful, fresh, homemade food. Lush. Would recommend

A lovely friendly pub with very tasty fresh food. We had the light lunch seafood platters, local fish and served fresh hot and delicious. I say light lunch it was very generous. The staff was happy and friendly nd we had very little time to wait for our food. Excellent venue. And very reasonably priced

Lucky find yesterday. We had set our hearts on a traditional Sunday pub lunch after a day trip to Berwick on Tweed. Failing to see anything that took our fancy there, we headed up the coast to Eyemouth and were rewarded by a lovely experience at The Contented Sole. We stayed downstairs in the bar, which is child and pet friendly, and were spoiled for choice with the extensive menu. A glance at the plates of other diners told us we would not be disappointed. As befitting a harbour pub, I chose the seafood platter, which comes in 2 sizes. My husband is not a fish lover, but was very happy with his Cajun chicken. Both dishes came beautifully presented and freshly cooked. Service was friendly and fast. The pub had a nice atmosphere and despite being very busy, there was no pressure to eat up and move on. Just a pity it's so far from home!

What a find. Visited on Sunday 10th Feb. Place was mobbed, clear sign of quality. We sat upstairs, service from the barmaid was prompt , attentive and friendly, and the food was delicious. Kids loved it, and it was exactly the sort of Sunday lunch ambience we were looking for. Price was fair and the quality of the food was a real selling point, really fresh. Can’t wait to visit again next time we holiday in Eyemouth.

Went here with mother son and grandaughter for dinner. Liked it so much went back next day for lunch. Not only do they serve full adult portions but they do smaller portions for those who don't have a big appetite. The children's meals are in 2 portions sizes. Your normal kids portion or they also have a toddler portion as some kids meals are far too much for a small child. Can be as cheap or expensive as u like depends on what u order but still won't break the bank. Can get busy at peak times due to the quality of the food and service. U wont b disappointed here

Walked from Colingham along coastal path looking for lunch. Dont be put off by rather dowdy exterior. Friendly staff. Extensive menu. Lovely fresh seafood platter. Reasonably priced.

Had a meal here on the 30th December, quite a busy bar lovely food, very friendly locals. We went for the smaller plate offering which was more than adequate.

Stayed in pubs accommodation across road from pub. Pub gets very busy, but is still very friendly. Serves good beer and food. Although a little chilly outside the bar was lovely and warm. Football is shown on tv,s in the bar.

Here in eyemouth on caravan holiday, was recommended to go here for pub lunch, so glad we did. £5 light lunch for home made macaroni cheese, few drinks, had the dogs with us, really fab afternoon in this wee gem of a place. Highly recommend.

Stayed in the apartments across the road on a wild wet and windy overnight whilst breaking the journey from NW Scotland down south to Yorkshire recently. The pub was great (the apartments, run by the pub, were too) with a welcoming atmosphere, friendly hosts and locals, and hearty portions of unfussy but really good food.Prices were really good. Dog friendly too. Would definitley stop here again!

Popped in here on Sunday for a lunchtime Sunday roast. On arriving were told that one of the roasts had been taken so they only had 3 roasts (there were 4 of us). We are a family of four, two kids 9 & 7. We all had staters, the prawns were ok, the pate was good but too much pate or not enough bread, depending on your view. The whitebait was overdone.

Had a 50th birthday meal for 16 people. Service was excellent as was the food. Would definitely return

Visited here 3 times this week whilst staying in the nearby caravan park. I went alone and with my wife, but not with my kids. Great pub with the best Green King IPA I have ever tasted. Friendly staff and locals (rough looking fishermen but real gentlemen ), if the barman is busy one of the locals will pull your pint for you. Best pub in Eyemouth by far, a proper taste of the local culture, much better than the trendy bar along the road, and the Fleet. Looking forward to going again next year.

Cozy little place with nice food and lovely waitresses. This is the second time I have eaten here when visiting family in Eyemouth and it is very convenient with a good atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Great traditional pub, right on the quay. Very good selection of drinks and an cosy imtimate bar area. Food also available, which looked great but we did not try.

Stayed in a 1 bed apartment owned by and opposite the pub. Very clean and spacious. Fantastic location near the harbour with seals you can feed. Nice atmosphere in the pub which allows dogs. Will be back.

We ate here by chance, and had very good service, although it was very crowded. The people were friendly and the atmosphere was local. Unfortunately, we realized that most of our food (seafood combo) was fried after we received it. But I would still recommend it.

We recently had a stay in Eyemouth; first time there! We had our two dogs with us (one of them only being a puppy) so it was important they could be with us at all times - this was definitely the place for that! We visited on two 3 occasions; twice for drinks and once for food! Each time the dogs were made to feel so welcome! We had speedy service and really enjoyed our visit here. When we did have food it was brilliant - good quality food served quickly! Thoroughly enjoyed our visits here!
