We had an excellent lunch here! The place is clearly underrated.

A lovely lunch in a cosy little gastro pub in the centre of St Albans. Our waitress Dora was outstanding - so welcoming and helpful. She made the whole experience extra special. Thank you Dora! The food was nice and good value for money. We'd definitely go back.

Went for Sunday lunch. Good food, good service and reasonably priced.

They took a booking from us for 6pm on a Saturday but the chef hadn't arrived? Burger was microwaved to death, Luke warm on the outside volcanic in.

Lovely roast dinner for two. Left it too late to book (do not make the same mistake as it is obviously popular) . However, helpful staff said pop by and we will try to fit you in. Found us a perfect table. Ample size, perfectly cooked meat and vegetables. Friendly good customer service. Excellent value for money compared with other local restaurants. Now going to be a regular visit.

God Sunday roast but menu like. However albeit slightly expensive but quality of food and service was great. Apple Crumble though was too sticky and needed the ice cream- not worth the £7 for it.

Cosy pub, nice atmosphere, lovely food and ale

So had Sunday lunch here with my partner and her parents. It was very nice, but there were just a few small issues. These are really for the owners/managers to take note. 1. 1 of the waitresses were not very friendly or helpful. 2. Our bottle of white wine was not cold and we had to ask for ice. 3. The Yorkshire pudding on our roasts were all cold. The rest of the food was really lovely, the place was clean and most the servers were very good. We will definitely return, I just hope they can pay attention to some of the smaller details.

We went for a late lunch and had the King Prawn burger and the Beef Steak burger - both fantastic, definitely better than the average pub food in the area. Will be returning to try other items from the menu!

First visit for early supper. Menu really nice plus a fixed price one too which was very good value for two courses. Attentive, friendly service and the food was tasty and well presented. Will certainly return.

It was my first time at this pub after reading some reviews about their Sunday roasts. I was pleased that the food was good and with lovely people to serve me. Definitely coming back 😎

I had the best meal ever in years! Dora was fantastic as a host. She made sure I had the best experience ever. I have some health restrictions in what I can eat and she made sure my meal was exceptional. The Chef, Julien, is a real Artist. Flavours are delicious and presentation is amazing. Food was ok but not worth spending the top price they charge. The table we were given was right in the middle of the passage to come in and the toilets, absolutely spoilt the lunch as we were forced to dine with our coats on because the door kept on being opened. Also kept on being touched by people passing by as it is such a tight squeeze. That table should not exist! This is the result of maximising profit by compromising the clients experience. Won’t go there again for food.

Just across the road ftom the Premier Inn where Madge is staying. First visit to this pub. A busy Saturday night. She is surprised how many pubs need door security. Unusual oop north outside the Manc City centre..and even then only certain kiddies bars. Good pint of St Austell Tribute..a favourite beer. Very lively Saturday.

Nice cosy pub and the food is great here, ranked down as the off pump ale selection used to be good here and the on pump selection of beers is standard and uninspiring.

Just pop in for a pint to watch the football but ended up ordering the Arancinies with mushroom sauce, which were delicious. Very pleasant and relaxing pub.

We had lunch here on a Sunday. The staff are friendly and welcoming but it was a little short staffed for a Sunday lunchtime. The Sumday menu consists of mainly roasts but there are usually 3 other choices of mains on the menu and a good selection of starters. We shared the tempura prawns for a starter, the prawns were sizeable and delicious. We then both had the stone bass with mussels, clams, leeks and samphire which again was a beautiful dish. I didn't see any clams in mine unless they were hidden. A very well executed dish. My partner finished with a double espresso but we had no desserts. The pinot grigio wine was a good accompliment with the meal. The kitchen did forget our side order of fine green beans. We reminded the waiter and they actually arrived after my partner had finished his main so it was a bean chaser/dessert. They were tasty though. I noticed that the diners next to us also had their side dish forgotten and arrived late after they had virtually completed their mains too. The pub has a nice atmosphere in a lovely historic building and we always dine here whenever we visit St Albans. Well recommended.

Very good place for Friday fish and chips Delicious tempura prawns Mushrooms soup not bad but nothing outstanding- taste better than look Wild mushrooms with blue cheese arancini - very tasty Dishes beautifully decorated but besides that I will not go there again Little space and very crowded We waited for our mains and starters more than 1hour Recommend for one night to try maybe your menu will be different and more interesting

Dear Readers, I came here with my sister and other half. We were seated in a quite little cubby which was perfect. Dora who waited for us was very attentive and positively chatty. We went with the A La Carte menu and had three courses all of which were served in good time. We started with the venison scotch egg, baked goats cheese and bread/olives. Honestly, the scotch egg was somewhat underwhelming. Could've done with more seasoning and maybe better quality eggs? The yolks were pale as anything! The goats cheese and bread more than made up for it though. For mains my sister and I had the fish of the day which was Hake, served with mussels and dauphinoise potatoes - an absolute delight. Sister's other half had the Sirloin which he thoroughly enjoyed. No issues on the mains. For dessert we had the winter Eton mess, Sticky toffee pudding and chocolate fondant. The eton mess and STP were delicious however the Fondant was definitely overcooked and not as r as we would've liked. Overall, the food and service were great, shoutout to Dora!! And given the menu is monthly, I will definitely be visiting again. I would give this place 4.5/5 if I could but unfortunately giving it 5 would mean it was a perfect meal, which it was not, so I'm forced to round down to 4. Hope this review was helpful and I would highly recommend a visit. It's more than just a pub!!

Was a bit of a squeeze to get to our table in the bar area, beer was OK, nothing special, nice looking pub, doubt I'd return when I'm in St Albans again though, got the impression it was more for food than for just a beer.

Good beer, they had a great selection of scotch. I asked for one and ginger. I was giving a JD I said that's Burbon. What's the difference? A shame as they had a great selection of Whisky and Burbon

Unfortunately experienced very poor customer service on last visit. I have been here a few times before, but most recent visit was very disappointing. I phoned prior and was told it was booked but there were some unreserved tables. All good. Turned up and waited for a space to sit at a table in the bar that wasn’t reserved. As extra precaution, I confirmed with the waitress that it was definitely free. Around two hours later, turned out they’d messed up their reservations and said they needed our table back before the football game we’d come to watch, after we’d already spent ~£200 on food and drinks. Whilst mistakes happen, and as someone who has worked in the industry for 10 years I am sympathetic to these scenarios, the manager was completely unapologetic. A sincere apology or offer of a round of drinks would have likely settled the mistake but instead she opted for a belligerent attitude as if it was unreasonable for us to expect to retain the table. Very poor. It’s a pub not a fine dining restaurant…. Even then, I’ve never heard of a restaurant rudely kicking people off unreserved bar tables. Update: The manager conflates frustration and asking for compensation with abusive behaviour. Absolutely not a single offensive or rude word was levied at any member of staff as that would be unacceptable. Ridiculous. The conversation I held was in a corridor - no raised voices - away from any other customers so curious to know how any upset was caused to other patrons. I clearly remember all members of our table saying to the waiter that we understood and appreciated it wasn’t his fault. The comment about two hour reservations is irrelevant. We were sat in the bar not the restaurant? The response says they wish I’d let the waitress know I wanted to watch the football, even though I checked with the waitress the table was unreserved - in the bar area! Which is it? When have you gone to a pub with a two hour table limit in the bar for an unreserved table? The reserved table for 10 next to us suddenly needed to be transformed into a table for 14, which became our problem to fix. They effed up and can’t just own up to it for some bizarre reason.

First time eating at this pub. The food and service could not be faulted. Service was excellent and Liam our waiter was lovely.

It's a small hole the wall pub. Cozy and fun.

Had my girlfriends family come visit, we requested an outdoor seat as we had 2 dogs with us, very comfortable under the heaters, quick order taken, food was quick and delicious. The staff were super friendly and professional! Will be back for the fantastic roast again for sure!

I like having a drink here on my visits to st Alban's. Well situated, good selection of and good beer. Nothing special, but a decent boozer.

Outrages !! Charge £1.40 for soda tap water.

Al a carte menu is rather restricted for vegan/veggie options. Restaurant can be squashed when busy. Car park is across the road in the multistory or further out. Enclosed beer garden is pleasant area on a nice day. Staff are friendly and helpful

A real pub, cozy, pleasant and friendly. The nice bit is that it's not a cattle market or a barn. It feels touchable. There is a restaurant and some outside space. What is there not to like.

Always a good welcome and decent brews

The burgers are gourmet-quality. I was expecting a typical pub burger. Nope! Absolutely delicious seasoned beef with perfectly cooked bacon, a great slice of cheese and deliciously fresh vegetables. The fries were pretty darn good too. It's doubtful you'll have room for dessert after finishing it all. Don't let the exterior of this place fool you. It may look like a regular pub, but the food they serve is way better than you'd initially expect. Service was friendly and excellently attentive too. Will be back for more soon.

Both my steak and my boyfriends Steak seemed very salty. Mine was overcooked (ordered rare and jt was very medium to medium well). Staff were polite and yet service seemed a little slow despite the place didn't seem that busy during lunch.

Worse Sunday roast ever!! Nothing like from their Online photos. Waiting far too long and the roasts is not hot. Bad seating area! Better go to nearby Soup kitchen as they do hot meals!

So, yeah it was good. The four of us had different mains which we all enjoyed. It's was a little cold though, which isn't great when you want to spend time at the table, I noticed a couple of diners kept their coats on. Lovely roaring fire heat at the bar but that that didn't extend to the restaurant. We'll definitely visit again if we're in the area but perhaps when the weather warms up!

We had our Xmas Do here last Friday. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was fantastic too. Highly recommend. Will definitely be looking to go here again sometime soon!

The food drink and service were wonderful but it was so packed my sister was jostled or had to move every time someone wanted to go to the loo and my mum was anxious due to covid.Would definitely come back but at a quieter time .

A group of 4 of us went for a late Sunday Lunch. It was delicious, and I was extra happy as roast lamb was on the menu.

Even though I am local, I am not a regular at this pub, however I have always found the staff so helpful and friendly that I would love it to be one of my locals one day.

We were visiting from Dublin and they had no problem accomondating 10 of us for a meal... Food was excellent as was the service and staff... Atmosphere was super!!

I had visited this place only once before about 20 years ago and liked it then .I had a very close buddy who lives in sarratt and we went here all that time back but just for drinks. It’s an absolutely charming place very old and steeped in local history, there’s an inglenook fire place that oozes the charm. It was an extremely pleasant greeting when we arrived and we were invited to take any available table which we did.now for the food , three of us ordered sausage and mash but alas there were only two available so I decided to have the teriyaki salmon . I have well in excess of a hundred reviews on here but this salmon meal beats the lot from all corners of our planet , go try it you will not be disappointed .I can’t judge value I was treated to it.

We visited the Cock Inn on Halloween weekend & all i can say is WOW .. the decor was spooky but classy & the staff really made an effort their costumes were great. From start to finish the service, food & ambience was impeccable. The food was 5* we had steak & it was better than any steak restaurant we have visited (and my husband has high expectations when it comes to steak). Highly recommended

We went to the cock in St Albans -it was ok -very expensive for a roast dinner I asked for the vegertarian roast dinner and asked not to have the Wellington as I don’t like butternut squash I also asked not to have carrots either- the waitress said they were busy and she will have to ask the chef if they can do this- I said I am just asking not to have certain things on my plate she still went to ask the chef - he said it was fine. I then asked to have a yorkshire pudding ( as all roasts normally come with Yorkshire puddings) it also says it comes with cauliflower cheese- if there was it was only a tiny teaspoon I didn’t even taste any cauliflower just the sauce. We then get the bill they have only charged 50p for the Yorkshire pudding and charged £17.00 full price when I only had a plate of vegtables. I know I asked for things to be taken off my plate but I was willing to pay £17.00 as it’s not there fault I don’t like certain food but then to charge for a Yorkshire pudding. Won’t be going there again

Cosy gastropub that serves tasty gourmet burgers. Service was attentive and the wine selection here is surprisingly extensive. Would give five stars if sauces were supplied in bottles/small bowls rather than sachets which can be very difficult to open with greasy fingers.

I ate here whilst away with work. I was a walk in and was seated without a problem. All staff were friendly, polite and attentive. The pub itself is very nice with good features and it had a great atmosphere. I had the steak burger which is fantastic. It is quite big, fully loaded with the burger itself juicy without dripping everywhere. It’s probably one of the best burgers I’ve had… and I’ve had plenty. All the food looked great as I watched what come out of the kitchen. I’d certainly recommend here for a meal or just a drink.

Popped in for drinks last Friday with friends and was very impressed with the service. Bar staff were super friendly and made us feel very welcomed. This was the first time I’ve been to the Cock inn and I will definitely be returning!
