The Clarence Inn in Powys

We were made to feel like one of the locals. We had drinks and dinner at the clarence in Brecon and I’m so glad we took the small walk outside of the main high street to find this gem of a pub. The Veggie lasagne I chose was soooo tasty and definitely home made. Can definitely recommend.

We arrived at Brecon at 18.15 and were lucky enough to be able to get a table so long as we ate before 19.00 which suited us perfectly because we were all starving! Saturday night without booking, we were lucky. The food soon filled us up with large portion sizes. Pudding should not be avoided either, calorie free on Saturdays.

This is our local , so you might think i'm biased, but it wouldn't be our local if it wasn't great! I write this review with a clear conscience. This is a fabulous family run, and family friendly establishment, everyone know them and they know everyone. The staff are friendly, the food is fresh and plentiful, so are the drinks. The atmosphere is laidback and relaxed and the beer garden is the best in Brecon. I compare every pub i go to with this one.

Went to the Clarence for Jazz Sunday, been coming here years and spent a lot of money here. Was kicked out for eating food from next door even though I had been ordering drinks here all day and the previous days. Incredibly rude female “bouncer” just looking for something to do. Clarence wasn’t serving food at that time hence why I had food from elsewhere.

Een vrij drukke pub maar niet gezellig ingericht. Maar goed wij kwamen om te eten en zij bieden een vrij eenvoudige kaart met voldoende variatie in vlees, minder in pasta en vis. Correcte maar niet echt vriendlelijke vrij afstandelijke bediening. Het eten was zijn prijs waard, maar verwacht geen uitzonderlijke smaken, gewoon straight en het is uiteraard een pub. Spijtig voor de luidruchtige ruimte en de sfeer.

Great welcome, big beer garden, lots of variety on the menu, good food and beer, all at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.

A weekend away and we had no idea where to have an evening meal. We used google to find this pub and we’re so glad we visited. The weather was beautiful so we sat in the garden. We both had steak. But the menu is varied and reasonably priced. The food was delicious, the service was great! Inside all the tables were reserved, but we wanted to stay outside anyway. The garden is pretty and dog friendly. The following day we went back for drinks and again all tables were reserved. So booking is recommended.

Just a step away from where we were staying. They had just hosted a wake and had a notice on the door saying no more food, but they fitted us in. Great food. Great service and really good value.

We came here for our final night's holiday in Sennybridge on a Thursday night, which isn't too far a drive from our BnB. I had called a few hours' before to make a booking, and they will able to accommodate. As we have 2 dogs with us, we asked for a table in the bar area, and they placed us in the corner, however it was next to one of the main corridors where a lot of people walk in and out, so the dogs could not quite keep out of the way, whereas we saw that other tables in the corner had 2 people and a lot more space/privacy (perhaps that is because we had booked a bit later which may have been why we had that table given to us). The patrons were absolutely lovely and one in particular gave our dogs so much love and attention that they really loved it! Staff were very matter of factly, and not as friendly. The bar was super busy, and we had to order food at the table, but go up to the bar to order drinks. So after a bit of a wait at the bar, I finally got to order our drinks (a Malbec and a Guinness), which was good. We ordered starters of Brie Wedges and Thai fish cakes, which were £7 each plate, and consisted of really small pieces of food, but it was really tasty. For our mains, I ordered the Sirloin steak, while my husband ordered the reef and beef - steak was very well cooked to our liking, and there was a good size prawn for the reef. Good and tasty quality food, with slightly expensive starters for the size. Not so good for parking or if you have dogs, as it was very busy and we were placed at a table which was a bit small for our needs.

Me and my three buddies tipped up to this lovely pub on a Saturday night and we were treated like long lost friends.We had the special Rock Steak meal……the steak comes to your table sealed by the chef and you cook it yourself to your own liking…..what a fab idea. Sat by the fire and just enjoyed the ambiance of the place and the fun of cooking our steaks. The landlord was very approachable and spent time giving us a health and safety briefing so we didn’t burn ourselves on the 200 degree slab of rock👍👍No injuries,glad to say. If in Brecon,this lovely pub is a must to visit.

Maybe I picked a bad day, but I have to say the food was very substandard. I had chicken ham and leek pie with possibly the worst textured meat I’ve tasted in ages and the sauce with absolutely no consistency or flavour. It’s not the cheapest food so you do expect a standard. If I’m in the area, I will have a pint in there because I do like the atmosphere, but I certainly will never eat again Shame really cause the staff on the Landlord are all quite friendly. We just need to find a decent chef.

We always used to come to this pub the night before refereeing a local tournament. We returned again after a five year absence. Really friendly & helpful staff , nice reasonably priced food and a nice atmosphere. Maybe see you in another 5 years.

We had a group of eighteen of us needing somewhere to get a meal on a Saturday night. I found the Clarence on the internet a fortnight before and exchanged emails with Roger and got ourselves booked in. We were provided with a high quality meal for all served up in an organised and timely fashion. The most popular meal was the steak and ale pie, with a few people opting for lasagne. There was plenty of choice and the large group choices were fully covered with a wide menu. With vegetarian options, spicy bean burgers, Glamorgan sausages and butternut squash lasagne. We had pre-ordered and the meals came out altogether nice an hot so great organisation. The food was to a high standard which everyone happily tucked into. Some opted for desert afterwards which was again generous. Will definitely be back.

We decided to go to Ludlow for a few nights but stopped half way there, Brecon, and booked the Clarence due to other reviews. It’s not the most attractive from the outside but inside is a lovely, welcoming atmosphere. So glad we booked as it was full and there was a note on the door saying they were fully booked. We both had the lamb which was delicious, not fatty at all, it came with two huge roast potatoes and then served separately carrots, peas, cauliflower, broccoli, new potatoes and Swede. Lashing of gravy, in gravy boats. Huge portion, my husband finished mine! Highly recommend but book first.

After a long, wet walk in the Brecon's we were recommended the Clarence as a great place for lunch. We weren't disappointed! You have to call to reserve a table but they managed to squeeze is in just before they stopped taking orders at 2.30pm. We both had the lamb tagine which was warming and just what we needed on a windy wet day. We also shared the bread and butter pud which was deliciously light. Highly recommended place to eat.

Went for lunch today and we were really impressed with the set up. Although we are all trying to get used to a new way of eating out they had everything sorted. A very pleasant gentleman greeted us at the door and talked us through the new procedures. The food was amazing and the staff we really friendly. I wouldnt hesitate to go here again. My family and I had tea here. We thought it was very friendly, had tasty food (everything was nice and hot) and we were near a toasty log fire. Another plus is that it’s dog friendly, there was no shade whatsoever! My only improvement would be homemade chips, but the standard chips with the meal were still very nice. Overall, a wonderful evening!

The menu is good, with a wide range of meals and it caters for vegans. The service is very good and the food is tasty. There is a large garden if you want to sit out during the summer months. The Men's WC is the best I have seen of any pub in the UK. Recommended.

This is about the 5th time we have visited this Brecon Pub and Restaurant and have never been left disappointed. The staff and owner attended to all our needs (there were 19 of us for this New Years Day Family & Close friends get together). The Meals were really tasty and great value for money. This is definitely one of our favourite places and we’ll definitely be going back to expand our visit count. Thank you for looking after us so well Clarence Inn.
