The City Restaurant in Doncaster

Been a couple of times now, lovely food and nice friendly staff. We are usually on our way to the theatre so eating earlier than usual, which could explain why it is quiet.

We LOVE going to The City. We have never had a bad experience. Mark and the team are always attentive, and go out of their way to make sure that every guest has a memorable and delicious evening! I booked a table for 6 for my birthday, though I didn’t specify that it was for a birthday. The morning of the booking, I received an email asking if it was for a birthday and I said yes. On arrival, the table had been decorated with banners and a badge, they brought me out a complimentary dessert and took off the cost of my meal. I was so surprised and so touched by this gesture. The restaurant itself is cosy and homely. It’s comfortable and you’re always made to feel extremely welcome. We were brought a plate of bread, smalec and Brie to start, which always goes down a treat! We’ve tried to find smalec to enjoy at home but it’s never ever as good as what you get here! We had a couple of members of our party who are quite particular about their tastes, and so we do spend a lot of time studying menus ahead of time to make sure they can eat and enjoy as much as the rest of us, and neither of them had any issue here. I enjoy that the mains come without “traditional” sides like potatoes/veg, you instead have the option to order exactly what you want, or don’t want! I ordered my usual, the duck breast. It never fails to impress me and the taste is unreal, served with cooked apple slices. I shared fried new potatoes, and also some beetroot with another member of the party. The City is welcoming, friendly, and a bit of a hidden gem. I’m so happy to see more and more people discovering and enjoying it, but a little sad that our little secret is out there now! I cannot recommend The City highly enough, and I will never stop telling people to go and give it a try! I would pick to eat here again and again and again, and never get bored. 😀

Went for an early evening meal with work colleagues and the food and service were really excellent, with a wide range of menu choices.

If you like excellent food this is the place. The food really is unbelievable and the staff cannot do enough. We will definitely be back.

We went on a Friday evening, it was absolutely incredible. The service was excellent, and the food was out of this world, it was like being abroad. You even get complimentary bread and a Polish/Hungarian kind of dripping which is phenomenal. The drinks were reasonable and authentic, I had a couple of Polish lagers which were very good. The ambience is lovely, music just right so you can talk, the décor is traditional and tastefully done. For Doncaster, is probably more on the expensive side but you pay for quality, I've been eating out in Doncaster for 20 years and this is one of the best meals I've had. It's a nice treat and you won't be disappointed.

Me and my wife tried this place 27.1.2024, what a Delight it was too, only a small restaurant, we booked our table for 17.30... just before we went to see a play at the Cast... By 18.00 every table was taken, Our food was delicious, plus you could see what other people were having, all looked lovely... We are going Back...

We needed somewhere close to the theatre for a meal. I had been once before and was impressed. I am and so were my guests. The small front of the restaurant does not prepare you for a long interior. It is well furnished and thought out. The menu is east European with good variety. The service is personal, warm, unhurried and relaxed, you really are encouraged to be at ease, enjoy each others company and the food and drink. I do encourage the cook to give less food! the soup was in a deep bowl; the meat in my Goulash was enough for two. We could not have eaten dessert though we would have liked to. There is something truly homely and old world about the City restaurant and its gentle embrace makes for a super and reliable meal that is good value.

Had my daughters Christening for a party of 40 people for food and about 45 overall for included in drinks as well. The service was outstanding. Amazing starter platters, breads, dips, amazing drinks and lovely service. The hot mains were amazing. Everyone left full, well looked after and honestly would recommend to anyone and everyone. Amazing experience. Beautiful bar and restaurant honestly couldn’t of asked for more.

Hosted my friends babyshower here, perfect venue! Nothing was too much trouble for Marek, he was so accommodating and went above and beyond to ensure we were happy with the set up. The food was beautiful, highly recommend

Hosted a baby shower here and the service was amazing. The owner Marek was welcoming and friendly. He helped us with setting up the room ensuring we had everything we need and arranging the tables to make space for our sweets and cakes. The attention to detail in placing candles and flowers around the room was a lovely touch. We chose to have a buffet for food and it was so tasty and well presented. I will be going back to have a meal with friends as the menu looks amazing with lots to choose from. I would defiantely reccomend this place. Thank you Marek for making sure we had a lovely day.

Without a doubt the best restaurant in Doncaster. It hands down beats everywhere else. Truly, a hidden gem!

Came to The City restaurant for a friend's birthday with four other people. Never visited before despite living nearby. Upon getting sat down, I completely forgot I was in Doncaster, a combination of smooth Jazz and the brickwork decor transported me to a trendy European city in the 1920s - 1930s. Before we had even been given the starter, we were given a basket of sourdough bread, with brie, butter and dripping, we were told the dripping was homemade, and it was incredible! I could have just eaten bread and dripping all night and been perfectly happy! For starter I had the French Agen prunes wrapped in Black Forest Ham with a sherry sauce. I was really unsure how this would taste, but I was absolutely blown away, the prunes had a sort of wine taste that paired perfectly with the sweet ham. We were given extra bread during the starters and I used this to mop up the sweet, decadent sherry sauce. For main, I had the Polish Hunters Stew (aka Bigos). This is my favourite Polish dish, reminding me of childhood. The City's version did not disappoint. It was rich, and every piece of meat in it melted in my mouth like butter. The portion size was good, I had it with a side of fried baby potatoes which I couldn't finish despite being them being so buttery and crispy on the outside. We weren't rushed out, despite it being about 9:50 when we had finished our food. The service was incredible, the waiter was very attentive & polite, our food came quickly and steaming hot. Altogether my order came to £35.50, that included two pints of Peroni. There was an additional service charge that we were happy to pay, adding an extra £3.45 per person on top, totalling the amount spent to £38.95. It isn't the cheapest place to eat, but it was worth every penny. If you're on a budget, they have several offers on, including 20% off if you have a cinema or theatre ticket from the same day, definitely a great date night idea! On departure, we were given a complimentary shot each of their Warsaw Apple Pie cocktail, which tasted amazing! Definitely ordering a cocktail next time I go! Please note that the portion sizes for the pasta and soup were massive, my friends asked for a tupperware to take this home to enjoy it another day. Overall, I'd give The City a 10/10. There wasn't a bad thing to say about my experience. It could be cheaper HOWEVER you can tell they're using authentic produce that's cooked with love. It was an impeccable dining experience. I will definitely be visiting again.

We visited here on a recommendation from a local man at the market. I have visited many restaurants over the years, this food was amazing! The venison was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth! Highly recommended you give this place a try.

Wow where do we start about this horrible place. If i could give it no stars i would but unfortunately 1 star is the lowest. Two faced and one of the worst business owners I have come across. Service is the worst we have come across in a restaurant as you get abused. Organised to go for a 2 year olds birthday party and explained we are Dine members which give us 25% off, He didnt sound happy and said he would give 20%….. later got a call and said 25% is ok. Seems they have signed up to Dine but dont want to give you the discount. The Co-owner who pretends to only be the manager that thinks it’s acceptable to message you after the visit to call your kids pigs. Sounds like the owner is in the wrong field of work. When is it ever excepted to be messaged privately by a restaurant owner/manager and call you and your child horrible names?? Effectively calling you and your children stupid and not good enough to eat in a Doncaster restaurant hahaha. Well thats the City Restaurant Doncaster! What do you expect a group of 2 years old to eat like? We cleaned and sorted our own plates and even wiped the tables but got a message saying horrible things to us! Im speechless . If they dont want to accommodate children please just decline booking. Safe to say its the worst dining experience we have had and advise everyone on earth to avoid it at all costs. Terrible just terrible. They dont tell you that or explain anywhere thst if you come as a Dine member, everything on the menu doesn’t count like free kids meal? Surely any professional buisness would explain this when you call in advance to book for a 2year olds birthday? Shocking. Think some small print or an explanation of prices would be great but thats to difficult. Pictures of the messages we received from the manager/owner on our personal phone attached and you can check his number against the one on the website as its the same. Unforgivable and disgusting and this is totally unacceptable. p.s. we have had a call saying the “manager” has been fired for sending these messages! You mean the owner doesnt want to talk and now is lieing as i said i will expose the truth of the abusr. Avoid the City unless you want personal abuse sent to your private phone. Check the website “kids of all ages welcome” yes what a joke that place is.

A beautiful, hidden gem of a restaurant that never fails to impress! Tucked away in the Waterdale area of Doncaster city centre, the aptly and previously aspirationally-named City Restaurant is totally unassuming from the exterior. A “blink and you’ll miss it” frontage hides this gorgeous European dining room, with a cosy atmosphere and welcoming staff. Featuring a small bar at the front of the restaurant serving a good variety of domestic and continental drinks, the dining area extends deep into the building and opens up slightly to the rear. The menu offers an eclectic mix of modern and traditional European dishes, with a personal favourite being the delicious yet vast Schnitzel! Sides go beyond the standard “chips or salad”, though unadventurous diners choosing those basic options won’t be disappointed. Portions are generous and the price reflects this - it is a little higher than is typical for the city, but the quality on offer far surpasses what you would expect. This is literally a case of you get what you pay for! Certainly a venue for special occasions and celebrations, the restaurant even offers discounts for diners attending the local theatre who show a pre-purchased ticket, showing their favour for the local arts scene.

This restaurant never disappoints ! Been a couple of times already, whether it was with just my partner or with my family for a celebration meal and their customer service is exceptional ! Authentic food, cooked well and a variety of original drinks/cocktails to go with them. Decor of the restaurant and overall atmosphere couldn't be any better- nice and cosy, very welcoming and the place is usually quiet which is a shame because it deserves a booked-up night every night !

The decor in the restaurant is carefully thought out and very interesting and pleasing to look at. The food we ordered was excellently cooked and imaginatively presented. There were extras served such as a pre-started and a post meal liqueur that we had not expected. The service was pleasant and we enjoyed talking to those who served us.

Food was great, we all enjoyed it, however there was confusion when paying. I wouldn’t normally care about a service charge but we waited a little over an hour for food (table of 4) , so we ended up leaving a £17.20 service charge because she wasn’t sure if we could pay the bill without and then overcharged us on card.

*** City Restaurant*** Last night we visited City restaurant in Waterdale Doncaster. First time we’ve been and probably won’t go back! The restaurant was lovely and the food was nice although the menu was limited but they added £17.90 service charge which wasn’t optional, I wouldn’t leave a tip that big, there was only 4 of us. Our overall bill was £189, we paid £100 in cash then asked to put the rest on card, the waitress asked if we wanted £100 paying on card we said no just the remaining £89, checked banking this morning and she’d put £99 on the card. So that’s a £27.90 tip!!! I might sound a bit tight but I think that’s taking the p*ss! Service wasn’t even that good, the waitress started clearing plates away while I was still eating! Needless to say won’t be returning

I found this restaurant online yesterday looking for a dog friendly place to have dinner as we were visiting family and had our dog with us. Normally we would end up having to eat in a pub or cafe as most restaurants do not allow dogs but I found The City Restaurant online and was impressed by the menu and all the great reviews. This place was absolutely amazing. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. It was such a nice meal. If this place was in my neighbourhood, I’d eat there weekly. I’m even going to try to book my mother in law’s birthday meal there in august. I hope this restaurant is doing well enough to survive the pandemic and the constant rising of prices. It was honestly one of my best dining experiences since I’ve liked in England.

Had a lovely evening at the City Restaurant. Menu options are great, my partner and I both tried meats we'd not had before which the chef cooked to perfection. And the staff made us feel genuinely really welcome. Complimentary starter and digestive and discount for next visit. First time visiting and definitely not our last. We had beef and venison to start, creamy chicken pasta and duck for mains and were not disappointed …. Very nice meal. But most importantly, the service, Mark Paul who served us and the young blonde girl...
