The Chip Box in Ceredigion

Terrible pale hard chips and a fish as wide as a fish finger and as long as two coated in undercooked batter more like pancake batter, never again!!

This place has gone downhill since last year, very quiet, nobody in which was suspicious there used to be queues out the door. Smallest piece of fish ever no more than an inch wide and raw batter. Rang them up and complained was told to go back for refund, didn't bother, they were apologetic. No way will be going back there again or recommending to anyone it was distgusting

The smallest piece of fish I've ever had from a chippy. Just over an inch wide. More like a fish finger. I been going there for years, no more I'll go somewhere else. Waste of £10

Thought I'd give it a go after the usual chippy had closed for Xmas....huge mistake. Nothing more can be said than it was only fit for the bin which is exactly where it went! Chips that were mostly raw, stone cold beans (if you could find any the portion size was that small) and sausages that looked that anemic they could've been mistaken them for being boiled and not fried.

Normally not a bad fish and chips, but nothing special, the fish is always always on the small side, but today we both had fish and chips and the fish was the smallest we’ve had from there. Apart from it being small, it was as thin as you could possibly get it,… The fish with batter on has to fried crispy as you would expect, but in doing so the fish inside, because it was so thin, had literally gone as crispy as the outside batter, It really was that thin! And the price for this piece of fish was £5.50 each, plus your chips! It’s got to be an expensive game for a fish and chip takeaway and it makes you think twice as to whether to nip down the road to the local Morrisons where you are guaranteed to get a lovely fish and chips with peas for £7. What has happened to the price of a piece of fish has now gone beyond!

We came across this business totally off the beaten Track/ Road while visiting around Aberystwyth.. You do need to search for it because this particular business is just outside Aberystwyth itself.. The fish here is just genuinely excellent .. Soft, even layer of batter and a full piece of fish that just melts away.. Since finding it off of the roundabout, we've returned to it for fish& chips on a Friday when we've been back visiting the area around Aberystwyth.. Pictures hopefully show you what I describe here on this forum .. Many people arrive after placing phone orders, and so that says something to me personally ..

Absolutely the best fish and chips on the planet! Chunky white fish, perfectly cooked. Perfect chips. Friendly and efficient service. Reasonably priced, too. Can't recommend highly enough.

Used to be brilliant Now rubbish Is thisvdue to change in ownership.Fish Batter was soggy ,second time now.Chips can be improved.This establishment was brilliant,now unsure whether I will really visit

This used to be a good chippy but the chip portions are just silly… the box is only half full. This has happened twice now. It’s smaller than a kids portion! Staff are miserable too. Won’t be coming again!

I visit this Chip Shop often but as I have recently changed my diet I have found myself only ordering chips. The chips themselves are usually crisp and nice but I have found several pieces of batter mixed in. It concerns me that care is not taken to keep food separate or at least clearly labelled somewhere that they aren't vegetarian/vegan etc, as people with diet preferences or allergies may be affected by it.

Mini fish and chips well cooked tasted good battered sausage and chips also very tasty, our meals on the day ours were spot on. Served in a box easy to eat out of..what more can you say

scruffy waiting area(walls and windows covered in advertising ,that looked like they had been there forever) ordered fish and chips waited ages even though there was no queue.so called meal arrived looking uninviting the fish was about two inches wide,the batter was soggy suggesting it was microwaved.chips were horrible.binned it.

We were shocked to see a 1 food hygiene rating on the door now of this take away chip shop,the notice when it was 5 used to be in the window but since being a 1 has been put on the door low down so you don't see it especially if the door is open already when you walk in .We have always found the place clean and service from the staff is always extremely good but we have noticed that the opening times say 12 pm but food is usually ready sat in the hot boxes by the counter at 11 am and so if you go in at lunchtime the Chicken can be very dry and not pleasant to eat but we still love the fish ,but we are very surprised by the 1 rating .

So i wrote a review "lost its prime" but i decided to go again due to the fact i saw the staff had changes. When its the youngish lad who cooks the chips and fish its amazing and back to they way the shop used to be, fair portion sizes and not being stingy with the fish, but when the normal older guy is behind the counter its back to being rubbish again and not worth while, I really want to make this my local again as it was the best in aber but being going to the one down the road that used to be a pub but is now a chippy. I think if the older gentleman actually stepped down and keep on the other chap i would defo go back !!! bring back my childhood chips !!!!!

Yum yum , lovely chips lovely staff , what more could you want . Good prices too. The fish has perfect batter and the gravy is nice , the mushy peas are great , I’ve nothing bad too say!!

Good food, friendly staff. Very good prices you’ll find, compare this chippy to mill street chippy and youll see a massive difference! It is cash only, before you go. Order was quick and there’s always a que which says a lot about a place! Lovely, would recommend and would definitely visit again. 🍟

We didn't discover this until we moved slightly out of town. The chippys in town are not very good. For a seaside town you'd think fish & chips would be a staple. If you're craving the cheap chippy experience from home, get up to Penparcau, they're really really well priced, food is always hot and awesome. Oh, and they do savloys and might be the only place in Aberystwyth to do so.

Ive been coming here for the last 16 years, The chap that used to run this place always cooked the best FISH !! he was amazing it was always cut and battered to perfection and big nice portions, I was so sad when he left but he assured me the new owners would just be the same. And to be honest they were for a long time, but recently they guy cuts the fish into tiny portions where the fish is soggy and extremely thin !!!its almsot like he is trying to cut the fish into so many fillets to make a profit but the price stays the same !! in the end we kept trying them and the only thing thats nice about the shop is the chips, they are still the best in aber but the fish is a joke, so we were gutted when we decided to go to a new chip shop, and we are so glad we did !! so sad this was my highlight of the week when it was chippy night, So if u want a fair fish for the price dont waste your money, they havnt improved if anything it keeps getting worse each time, My whole family used to use this chippy for 16 odd years but now all have gone to this new one !!! such a shame Also the staff are always so bloody miserable lol this one girl with brown hair and earings dosnt even know how to smile I dont think lol, but the have always been miserable but the fish and chips used to be good so it was worth it but now... not worth it

Having recently moved into the area we have been in dissaray with all the unpacking and sorting out so the chip box has been a treat ,it is not too expensive and service is always very quick and the girl behind the counter is always very friendly and very efficient we can't fault the place it seems to be very popular too which is not surprising the food is cooked perfectly the chicken is so nice not over cooked it is moist and flavorsome and the meat comes away from the bone really nicely so there is very little waste ,we have tried the fish and the pies to on other visits and again all cooked wonderfully the chips are lovely too

Bought 2 small chips one large chips more chips in small than bloody large box. What the f that about

Lovely staff and lovely food. The chip box is right in the middle of the village and easily accessible. Although there is a step I have often seen staff go to the door to take less mobile customers their order. The cod is beautiful and everything very affordable

Checked out the reviews from previous people and thought we were onto a winner for our day trip to Aberystwyth. Found it easy, didn't want to judge a book by its cover but inside it was the dirtyest of places. Still could be great so we ordered 2 cod and small chips. Portions small for your money and thank goodness as the fish was vile not sure if it was the soggy batter or the fish but seemed tainted with something. Chips not good either even our dog wouldn't eat the fish.....! Very disappointed and didn't feel great after trying it. This is the one at Penparcau!

Popped in here to grab some lunch and we both had fish and chips which was cooked fresh, served in a box and very tasty.

A little dissapointed with todays fish and chips as usually they are great fish and chips and we look forward to them as a treat

Popped in on a busy Saturday lunchtime service and was greeted by a very friendly member of staff who took my £4.90 for a good portion of mini cod, beans and chips served in an environmentally friendly cardboard container. The mini fish was freshly cooked as were the chips. Everything as usual was pipping hot and the quality of the beans were great - thank you Team Chip Box. Mike Daniels' chip shop is most definitely worth giving a try if in the area and comes highly recommended.

Popped in on Saturday for the regular pie and chips on the way to watch a football game. The service was prompt and very friendly, with the chips nice and fresh. I paid five pounds for the meal plus a can of pop, which I feel is very good value - thank you Team Chip Box - I look forward to returning soon :0)

Got to go there .fish cooked to order beautiful crispy better gorgeous fish . Brilliant take away. 5 star
