Set in a very quiet remote village, The chequers is a hidden gem. First time here on a quiet Saturday afternoon we ordered a couple of drinks & snacks and relaxed in the garden. Bob and Wendy were very welcoming and we had a good chat which made us feel comfortable amongst the locals. We shall be along again for pizza next time!!

They have the best pizzas I have ever tasted and they are made fresh in the outside pizza oven. You get to choose your own toppings and you can have as many as you like. They also have the most beautiful hanging baskets I have ever seen.

Greta friendly pub. First went in over 40 years ago. My Dad became a legend by hitting double 10 in the dark. I have very fond memories of the original owners and glad it stayed in the family. So nice to visit in 2019 and hopefully will visit in 2021 if possible. To many good memories to write about S

This family run pub is a real gem, one of those where customers actually talk to each other ! Run by Bob, Wendy and Amy, the Chequers is a country pub, no frills, with open fires / wood burners in each of the 3 bars. Bob brews his own bitters and stouts in the micro brewery on the premises and has won more CAMRA awards than is decent! Due to Covid the weekly Friday fish n chip extravaganza is on hold however the new multi fuel pizza oven should be soon cooking crispy thin made to order fare. During shut down the whole pub had been cleaned, decorated and generally given s freshen up. All required Covid precautions are strictly upheld with social distancing, hand sanitizers etc . A newly refurbished out door area provides covered seating for those who wish to smoke or sit out when weather allows. I found it quite easy to pass by this pub first of all as it’s main entrance doesn’t face the road but is side on as you enter the large car park which is not particularly well lit however it’s well worth turning around and seeking it out

Small, friendly pub in a beautiful village. Quiet and clean inside with a large garden at the back including a covered patio. The food is not being served at the moment (due to the Covid situation) and the home-brewed ales were also not on. However there was a good range of local East Anglian ales, including two from Lacons. Nice place to visit if you are in the area or a walker or cyclist. A local business that is worth supporting.

We booked for fish and chips, the two who didn’t eat fish in our group asked for battered halloumi instead. The food was amazing everything freshly made on the premises. The fish/halloumi came with chips, salad, along with Bobs home made minted mushy peas, coleslaw and tartar sauce. All washed down with his Son of Sid award winning muck cart mild. Followed by gransden cock up ( better than Eton mess). Always a warm welcome from Bob and Wendy in the chequers with roaring open fires and three bars to choose from. Love this pub!

Bob Mitchell has a gem of a pub here. His "Son of Sid Brewery" turns out some lovely ales. Muck Cart Mild is proper. None of this Craft Ale with American Hops that tastes like a mix of Cillit Bang and TCP will be found here....

I wish this pub were closer to my home - it's fully 14km away - as, from 20 years' experience, this is the epitome of a good village pub, run by the Mitchell family for many decades. The cliche is that a pub is the heart of the community but, in this case, that certainly applies. It has a very simple unfussy interior where the layout and atmosphere in the first and middle bars encourages conversation with friends or complete strangers. There is a large car-park but sadly it is no longer on a bus route. Many people come here for the home-brewed beer, which is exemplary and Bob (the owner/brewer) is always trying new recipes - though the English Ale (a light bitter) and the Muckcart Mild are perennial favourites. Food is largely confined to Friday nights, when the focus is on fish and chips, though other dishes are available. You should book in advance (24 hours or more) as the fish is bought in specially and fresh. As well as being beautifully cooked with splendid batter and chips, the side dishes (salad, coleslaw and mushy peas) are excellent. Maybe the most out-of-the-ordinary aspect is the homemade tartare sauce which Bob learnt from attending courses with Rick Stein and which raises the whole meal to a higher level still. Bob & Wendy will cater for special events too, which gives them scope to provide other dishes. We hosted a big family party (100 people) there recently and the hog-roast and salmon were given rave reviews from our guests, as were the salads, vegetarian dishes and their selection of pork pies etc (the latter bought in from a local specialist supplier). There is no doubt in my mind that this pub is 5-star and I recommend it heartily.

There was a really nice feel about this pub. The Son of Sid beer was excellent and the other ones looked appealing. Apparently you need to pre order food which is meant to be very tasty. Even though we weren't locals everybody was friendly and welcoming.

Make sure to pre-order from this quaint local Free House in Little Gransden. The fish was the best I've ever had and the couple there are so delightful. We ordered take away and they send the meal home in serving platters that they request be returned within 24 hours. How charming! So glad my stay in Great Gransden included a meal from this tasty place. Will be an experience that I will always remember with joy

We called in for a pint having hear that it is the home of the Son of Sid Brewery and we were not disappointed. The beer was great, the service friendly and there was a pleasant relaxed atmosphere about the place. It is a bit overtly royalist for me with the picture of the queen on the England flag, and the themed royal beers, but I soon got over that when I tried my pint.

We booked supper at this amazing pub by mistake; I was confusing it with a place that no longer exists in the next village! I’m very glad I did though; the fish and chips (food only on Fridays, must book in advance) are incredible; beer made on site and really good. Staff are friendly and full of stories about the history of the village and the pub which they’ve run for over 50 years. Cash only though, be warned; but definitely do go!!

You can always be sure to get a superb pint of real ale here. The brewery is often experimenting with new brews and inventive names. They do always have a few favourites, like 'Muck Cart Mild', which is definitely worth a try.

The Chequers is a traditional village pub with a microbrewery attached, it has a really unique atmosphere so is worth a visit. Fish and chips at the Chequers is a wonderful night out for all the family, you do need to book in advance but it's worth it for the wonderful food. Word to the wise portions are huge so if you have someone with you with a smaller appetite or who wants to save room for a fantastic pudding I would suggest splitting one between two.
