Fantastic experience. The food was excellent, the special cocktails were delicious, and the service was second-to-none. Great atmosphere.

It needs a TierraAstur next to it to complete. Plus there is a Chinese man defecating

Location and food are really good, but the best part of the dinner has been the waitress Piera, such an amazing professional.

The tasting menu and wine pairing was fantastic and service was brilliant!

We went to this typical Scottish restaurant intrigued by the positive reviews, upon our arrival we found a very kind Italian waitress who helped us choose the dishes. The venison is delicious and the trout is also excellent, not to mention the desserts. Truly a positive experience. If you are in Edinburgh don't miss this place!

The restaurant is located in the basement, the wifi was good, and the food was quite delicious. However, the service was more of a habitual move, and it kept coming and going as if they were trying to quickly vacate my table. And it was too expensive compared to the quality of the food. The price was expensive, but there was also a (reasonable) service charge, so I was quite disappointed.

Table reserved for 6. Seated on a table of 4... we were stuck closely to the people seated behind us. The food is really basic and expensive for what it is...30€ a piece of meat for a small quantity.

Restaurant found by chance, but what joy! Excellent meal, everything was very well cooked and delicious. Perfect servers, fast, pleasant and smiling. A very nice address

Really excellent little place! We came for an early dinner with an 8-year-old. Food was great for grown-ups and kiddo. Special shout-out to the haggis parcel (which is parceled in a sort of crispy wonton shell - really nice.)

Nice staff and location, food so so. I asked for the beetroot salad and the rib eye, both of them were good, but nothing espectacular. Because of the lasts reviews we expected more.

I went to The Cellar Door on 09/12/2023 at 16:45, as our friend had booked a table for a Christmas meal. We arrived around 10 minutes early and could locate nobody on the first floor, however we did see a sign saying the restaurant was downstairs and to make our way there which we proceeded to do. We found nobody downstairs and then proceeded to go back upstairs, one thing we did note were the steel stairs were extremely slippy it was almost like an ice rink.. When coming back upstairs we were met by some staff who informed us that the steps had just been mopped and then proceeded to take us back downstairs, unfortunately on the way down I lost my footing on the steps due to how slippy they were and proceeded to fall on my back and shoulder down the last 5 steps. Whilst I was able to get back up, no effort was made to rectify the situation with the steps until I complained to a member of staff and advised them they should have dried them at which point a member of staff did this. Nobody checked on me afterwards, and whilst the meal was great and the service once we sat at the table was good the entire experience was spoiled by this accident which could have been avoided had considerable care been taken by the staff to dry the steel steps after they had been mopped. Unfortunately this also led me to miss my theatre trip as I've had to go to A&E!

Experiência a nunca mais repetir! Antes de sentar, já estavam a marcar hora para sairmos. O prato era literalmente, uma couve flor, mesmo só couve flor, inacreditável. Mesmo este ainda não ter sido servido recusaram trocar o prato. A quantidade de comida dos restantes pratos era miserável. Fujam deste restaurante!

What a fantastic restaurant. We had the taste of Scotland taster menu paired with wine and it was an absolute treat. Lovely friendly staff, lovely owner, who some how new loved limoncello. Very worth whole experience. It's not often you sit for. 2 hr meal and surprised it went that quick. Awesome, fabulous, going again.

The food on the menu didn't match Google, and the prices on the menu didn't match the bill (they charged us more). Ordered a drink and they only filled up the glass 2/3 way. Food tasted average and the service was bad. Would not recommend.

They did not have our reservation listed even though I booked through their preferred app. We were able to get a table anyway. Menu and pictures listed here on Google are not necessarily the menu that is offered. My wife was looking forward to a burger but that was not on the menu. Those menus and images should be taken down. Food was ok, but not worth the price for the portion sizes or quality. This should be listed here as a more expensive restaurant, as we were not expecting to spend that much. Our waitress was very odd and difficult to understand, and kept hovering over my wife's shoulder and making us uncomfortable. We sat on the platform under the arch and it was noticeably dirty. Would not recommend this place.

This restaurant was our first impression of Scottish culinary. And we were completely flabbergasted by that venue. Served by a friendly team we had absolutely great dishes. Can only recommend it and we'll surely remember that dinner at The Cellar Door.

We had the tasting menu and found it to be underwhelming, particularly for the price. The food was average, as an example, one of the dishes consisted of raw tomatoes with balsamic vinegar and some dip. The atmosphere was lacking and we were still hungry after the meal. However, no problems with the service, the waiting staff were attentive and friendly.

This restaurant is literally in a cellar, hence the name, and looks nothing like the photos. It's tiny, and the bathroom is practically in the room, which is awkward. The lighting was way too bright which made the atmosphere sterile. The food was ok, and they had several vegan options for me, but it was not good enough to make up for the lack of atmosphere. I would skip this place in the future and eat elsewhere.

Service was excellent. Atmosphere was a bit dungeon-like. Unfortunately, the steak and venison were both tough. Desserts were very good.

Last time I was in Edinburgh, I ended up eating in the Cellar Door by chance. I remembered it as a nice location with friendly staff and good food. This time we booked it in advance and it was better than I remember. The only issue was that an earlier table had arrived very late and so our table wasn't ready. I can't blame the restaurant for that and the staff handled it very well. I had a smoked salmon mousse starter, a venison main and sticky toffee pudding. The starter was good, but not exceptional. The venison was probably the best venison I have had anywhere and the pudding was close to perfect. To drink we had a bottle of Amarone, which was really good. I don't remember anything specific about the service, but I have a general impression of the staff being very helpful and everything appearing very inefficient. I really can't find anything to fault and I would happily recommend the cellar door to anyone.

The Cellar Door was a magnificent experience. From the friendly service, to the atmosphere, and the incredible food, I can not recommend this restaurant enough. My partner and I did the six course menu with wine pairings, he got the vegetarian menu and I got the regular menu (so we could share and try as much as we could).l (also, we forgot to take a picture of one course). It’s hard to pick a favorite dish because each one was delicious. I’ve had plenty of great dining experiences but this one easily ranks as one of the best (not just in Scotland—anywhere). I cannot recommend the Cellar Door enough. Make sure you check this spot out!

Loud dining room with loud noice of bottles from the bar. We ate the Scottish tasting menu with meat. The food was decent until the Tomato slad before the main course. That tomato salad had not much flavor with a simle sour cream sauce. The main course had no taste, salt and pepper needed to be added. None of the wine and drink pairings fit with the foods, but there were some that could have been switched up and would had fit better. Last comment (but first shock) … we were seated next to people’s feet… see picture…

My father and I walked past this place looking for somewhere to grab dinner at 8:00 on a Friday night with no reservation, an almost impossible task. Having found the original place we had our sights on rammed, we decided to give this place a try, in the end a much better outcome. Having turned up, we were given the literal last table available. Despite the business, the food was still great, venison haunch followed by sticky toffee pudding was well cooked and tasty. A lovely find.

Booked here for a pre-Tattoo show. Already did our homework before visit so knew we wanted the tasting menu with wine experience. We were really looking forward to the dishes. Initial Reception by staff was good. Friendly. We had been placed right in front of the bar and we were in the sweet spot for staff to see immediately the moment we had put our cutlery down and the slates would be immediately whipped away from under us. We were receiving next courses and wine before we had finished the last course wine. There was no break and it began to feel uncomfortable and we were also in the rat run for staff thundering past with other diners food. We asked to be moved. Which was better. The food was hugely disappointing. Looked ok, but just didn’t deliver on taste. The potato purée under the haggis parcel was cold…it could have well meant to be, but it was awful. The hot and cold smoked salmon mousse seemed nothing like a mousse and was very watery. The tomato dish was made to sound way more than it actually was. The biggest disappointment had to be the venison. Again looked great and may well have been if it had been at least warm. When we told the waitress we were told it was supposed to be like that…….the lemon posset was, well, lemon posset! Wines were ok although the dessert wine was undrinkable and was left. We just walked away feeling ripped off for £159. We did tell the staff during and after but they seemed completely non plussed. We had much much better for a lot less the following night, so would not recommend this establishment.

We saw this place when walking to another restaurant that turned out to be full. We doubled back and got the last table for two, and we’re delighted that we did. This is an intimate, atmospheric modern Scottish restaurant with a hard-working team serving well-known dishes with a Scottish twist. We both had the venison haunch, which was delicious, followed by one sticky toffee pudding and a lemon posset - both lovely. Serendipity is a wonderful thing.

Impeccable dining experience! The service was top notch, and we were even given a complimentary glass of Prosecco for a reservation mishap. Service was very efficient and friendly. They offer plenty of vegetarian options. The food was absolutely delicious!!

Нажаль були голодні , тому не сфотографували 😅Чудово поєдналось з крафтовим пивом . Дякуємо за атмосферу і завітаємо ще раз на комплексний обід з повним комплексом страв 🌎

Kinda cool ambiance but the food and service didn’t make up for it. Got the meat Taste of Scotland Prix Fixe menu. The stand-out was the crisp haggis (really well done with a combination of texture and rich flavors). The steak was bland, the heirloom tomatoes were acceptable. The service was the main detractor. Other tables came in after us but got their last courses before we had gotten our mains (and we had been waiting on the Heirloom tomatoes, which shouldn’t have taken a long time to cut…)

Excellent food! This was my favorite stop in Edinburgh and I feel lucky that we got to eat here. The bread was soft and the butter tasty, the tomatoes were the best and the fish I had was buttery soft! The servers were really attentive and polite. Definitely recommend and would come back.

The editors of the trade magazines who listed this restaurant among the best in Edinburgh are criminals. For the modest sum of £ 404.- for four people we ordered a tasting menu ( with added cheese) that is a joke in bad taste. Portions insignificant both qualitatively and quantitatively, pate miserable, salmon cream less than homemade ( served on pan cakes that looked like the galettes I ate during my military service), two badly cut tomatoes on top of a cheese mousse ( served in a glass bowl), the meat as well as the haggis were saved. The dessert was of tremendous acidity, where the lemon concentrate destroyed the balance of the cream. The room is noisy (forget quiet dining) the table was sticky and wobbly as well. The only positive notes were the ladies on duty and the wine, which while not renowned was good.

We decided to go here for a nice meal on the last night of our holiday. We decided to do the tasting menu, which wasn’t cheap, but as a treat. We were sat close by to the till for the staff members and entrance to the kitchen, which was absolutely fine until two of the members of staff began to argue, not very subtly, and more than once, which became very awkward to be facing them and at such a close proximity. Sitting here meant we were also subject to the apparent chaotic nature of the service. We were moved to a different table half way through the meal, which was not a problem at all as the waitress was very polite about it, and offered a free drink, and meant we were a bit further away from the chaos. When we received the bill, we were charged for the drink so I asked the other waitress if she could take it off the bill; this was met with hostility and quite an abrupt response from the other waitress. The food was brought out very slowly after we were about half way through, and when we were moved to a different table to accommodate for another table of 6, it felt like we had been forgotten about. When the dessert came out, it appeared and tasted to have melted and been left for a while. It appeared that some of the members of staff were aware of the poor experience, and one continued to apologise. This honesty and friendliness of two of the waitresses made our experience better. It was the abruptness of some of the members of staff, some of whom were arguing in front of us, disorganised atmosphere which meant it was difficult to relax for an expensive meal, and feeling you had been forgotten, that means that it was sadly not the most enjoyable meal. I would never want to leave a bad review for a company, and can only imagine how good it could be had we gone there on a good day, I think we were just unfortunate.

Very nice authentic Scottish restaurant. The service was perfect and the waitress was so sweet with our little baby. Even the owner stopped by our table for a wee chat. Everyone was very welcoming and the food was incredibly good!

Was pleasantly surprised how good the food was. We had the tasting menu and could not fault it. We have eaten at loads of restaurants including michelan starred ones and this was right up there. Cannot say anything bad about the dishes at all and the staff were lovely. Will def come back.

This was a miss for us. A charming website and branding had our hopes up for a nice date night, but sadly, this place was a miss for us. We both ordered starters, sharing plates, and main courses. The food was not prepared well and was very bland. There was a different person waiting our table each time something was brought out, and they never seemed to know where to bring the food or what was going on. A number of times, someone else's food was brought to our table. Perhaps an off night for staff and food.

Absolutely fantastic! Everything about this restaurant was 5*. All the staff were friendly, helpful and very efficient, even though the restaurant was busy, they still had time to answer questions about the menu. The menu was modern, quirky Scottish and utterly delicious. Everything my husband and I had was just a delight and we loved the whole experience. We would totally recommend you try this restaurant, it is an absolute gem.

Delightful fine dining restaurant in the centre of Edinburgh. The Haggis Parcel was delicious and we also had Venison, Steak and Trout. The servings aren’t massive but we did not have room for dessert after some starters and mains. Service was friendly and attentive.

Had a fantastic meal with a group of friends. The haggis parcel & venison were spectacular. As was the Primitivo, it went very well with the haggis. Then I think we had a Sancerre which made an ideal light wine.

Lieux agréables. Wifi disponible. Qualité de la nourriture très correcte : le faux filet de viande écossaise est excellent, le chevreuil est également très bon. Mais les quantités sont relativement désastreuses. 30€ pour un steak de 160gr (sans doute un peu moins je pense) avec des frites (une vingtaine de frites environ), c'est très cher payé. Idem pour le chevreuil avec quelques frites et trois brocolis qui se battent en duel avec une purée de choux rouges. Desserts : là encore très bon et du fait maison, mais très cher (glaces, pudding) Au final, il s'agit sans doute d'un restau gastronomique, au vue des quantités dans l'assiette et du prix payé. Bref, un peu déçu.

Dined here last night with friends - we all had the tasting menu - every dish was delicious, presentation, taste exceeded all expectations- literally the best meal we’ve had out in a very long time - if not ever! The most disgusting food ever this wasn’t ribeye. The food was expensive and only a child potion. Pepper sauce with no pepper. Just chips and steak. Went for my husbands birthday worst meal we had on our 10 day visit to Scotland

Not recommended. Would not extend a voucher I had with them by one week which I was not able to use due to being on holiday. Gave voucher to others to use who were automatically charged 10% service on the voucher, additions and drinks. Food was ok, the venison was the highlight (very good), but generally over priced.

Still hungry. The butternut squash gnocchi had only 3 gnocchi. I ate it in 4 bites. The trout was actually salmon. The venison was as hard as a hockey puck. Haggis starter and tomato soup starter were good. The meal took 45mins to come out and was more expensive than it was worth. The staff was nice though.
