The Catherine Wheel in West Berkshire

Just dropped in for a beer. Best selection of Belgian beer I've found in any British pub. Just had une beer before closing so can't really rate in detail but no complaints on any front at all.

Strange layout to the place. Long and narrow. Excellent choice of ales. In fact I think the best ales in Newbury. Not because of the choice, which is good, but they are served at a proper temperature. The drinks can actually be tasted, as opposed to other places where they are too cold.

Food good. Staff very friendly. Drinks cold.

Not visited The Catherine Wheel for several years but as they now boast real ales we had to give it a go. There was a very good selection but my penchant is for stout. The first I tried was definately off and the barman readily agreed saying it was near the end of the barrel. He immediately changed the barrel and gave me a fresh pint. It was from a different brewery but absolutely perfect. The Catherine Wheel will definately be on my list next time in Newbury.

What can I say. Love this pub. Stafff are always friendly and welcoming. Had a few ales from there excellent selection and then tried there new cocktail bar! Delicious. Try the chocolate orange negroni!

Visited this pub that I really rate for the first time in ages after on a busy Saturday. Ended up with friends on a table reserved for others at 6.30. Hassled at 6 10 when bookers arrived in the pub then basically kicked off at 6 20. Disappointed at the indifferent treatment by seemingly indifferent young staff valuing one set of customers over another. Bad taste left. I won't hurry back.

Mid week wind down? Go here..... Pies and pints are on point! But Chorizo skewers are a no

Small but lively pub in the heart of Newbury; the staff are attentive albeit a bit sparse and they've clearly grown faster than management can keep up with. Definitely worth a go at off peak times for a lesser-known beer or cider to try!

Best pub in Newbury in my opinion, I am a frequent visitor and I'm always impressed with food and beer options. Some may find it too busy at times but the atmosphere is great 👍

Great pies 🥧! I had the Moo with mash and mushy peas and my partner had the Mistle Moo with chips and peas. Both pies 🥧 were excellent. We also had a beer and a cider. If your ever in Newbury and fancy a pie this is the go to pub.

They have just opened a new cocktail bar and it’s absolutely amazing, the cocktails are incredible for the price. You should definitely check it out

Lovely beers, good prices and a fun food menu. Only issue is one particular staff member. Bald Head, Tall, Dungarees, Beard. Gives me dirty looks, has shouted at my face calling me rude when i’m hanging out with my friends and embarrassed me. I try not going into the Catherine Wheel due to his rude and unprofessional service that leaves me feeling uncomfortable!

We had an excellent Pieminster pie Sunday buffet here today and some great beer as usual. Well done to all the staff 👍

Very slow service, food is always 30-40 minutes late, terrible place.

Loved the Pie and help yourself to all the veggies. A great pub with an even better choice of drinks.

This place does great food and has lovely friendly staff. I would prefer a larger and warmer area inside, but the pie and chips will keep me coming back for more every time.

Friendly pub with a great selection of ciders and a good variety of ales. Good service and fair prices, My only criticism is that the chairs are not very comfortable if you intend staying for longer than an hour. Worth a visit, i will go back.

A great selection of ales to drink, very impressive. I was not so impressed by state of the toilets, utterly disgusting and no toilet paper either. I have never seen a pub with so many massive TV's crammed in to such a small space and this had a detrimental impact on the atmosphere.

We preordered food as we were a big group, staff here couldn’t have been more welcoming. The pies were very lovely and good portions, vegetarian moo-less pie was very tasty and I’d recommend the mushy mint peas, delicious!

Doesn't look so appealing from the outside, just like a regular pub so I'd not gone in previously but was told about their fantastic pie menu and decided to give it a try, glad I did. They have a selection of steak, chicken and vegan pies which should cater for everyone. Service is friendly and whilst it doesn't have a restaurant feel, the food is very good nonetheless. Very reasonably priced and generous portion sizes have tempted me to come here regularly. Who ate all the pies? That'll be me ☺️

2 recent visits show it wasn’t just a one off. Slow service. Cold chips and pies. Gravy so late we had finished our meal. I won’t be going again.

Stopped in to grab a pie chips and mushy peas before going to cinema along with a couple of pints of Madri , very welcoming and service was great. I don’t have to write about how good the pies were cos the picture says it all !

Fab pub. It's got great food, great real ales and is reasonably priced. The guest beer I had (King James - very good) was £4.70 but they said the on tap beers were cheaper. What I especially liked about the pub was the atmosphere. It has a kind of young quirky but cool 70's vibe. With mismatched chairs and tables and little nooks. The pies and other menu options have fun names (in the style of Ben and Jerry's ice-cream). It's a friendly fun pub

Great pub in a beautiful market town. We can not comment on food as have not eaten here 'yet'... although will look to when we return to Newbury. Great variety of drinks to choose from. The atmosphere was A* we were here in June and were lucky to watch/listen to #Dopamine perform.. utterly first class entertainment in the lean too/outside area. Totally recommend this place..

Top place in Newbury, definitely a go to! Huge choice of beers and IPAs, great food, including vegan pies. TVs with sports, people-watching window seats with view to the street. Excellent all over!

A brilliant selection of cans, bottles, cask and keg. Wish I'd found this place earlier, every time I come back to Newbury I'll make a beeline for this wonderful pub.

We chose from the express lunch menu..... pie, side dish with soft drink for £10. The pies were outstanding. The pub serves an impressive array of ales and ciders. There is an outside courtyard for when the sun is out.

If you are looking for a Dog friendly pub with live music and pies coming out your ears… this is the pub for you. Also it’s haunted… 👻 try the lilies cider. The staff are lovely :)

Visited for the first time today after a recommendation. We were not disappointed. Pies were amazing, service was superb. One of the bar staff even got me a mug to prop up my phone so we could watch the Ashes and the British Grand Prix at the same time. First Class.

Booked a table for 7 of us last week for Father’s Day. Had been here before and the pies were quite nice! However this time we waited almost an hour and a half for our food to arrive. The pub wasn’t busy and there was only one other big table ordering food. When the food had arrived a lot of the pies were still cold or lukewarm in the middle! Not great as we had waited so long to eat. If you don’t have the kitchen capacity to cook pies then close the kitchen instead of having hangry customers! Service was ok… could’ve been better! Real shame

Saw this pub on the local news recently so when we next visited Newbury we thought we’d give it a visit. Pint of larger and a pint of larger shandy was just shy of £12. Absolute ripoff. Won’t be going back.

Stumbled across the Catherine Wheel whilst trying to find a dog friendly outside place for lunch. Spotted the beer garden and went in. Menu looked good, ordered a cheese and coleslaw baked potato and a ploughman’s, had a zero alcohol IPA and a soft drink. Food was quick, huge portions and really really good. Staff friendly, attentive and helpful. Definitely would recommend.

Their speciality pies are excellent and well worth the visit. Relaxed atmosphere. Service was a little slow, but was not in a rush and the food was worth the wait. Would visit again.

Steak pie and hot buffet. Delicious. Took 12 minutes for Pie to come out then help yourself to buffet. Fresh roasted carrots cauli broccoli. Mash n cauli cheese. Roast potatoes

Best pub in Newbury for beer and cider choices, not even a question there! On top of that, for those that dabble in pork scratchins - it's comes out warm with apple sauce, hummana hummana hummana! Great outside area with screens, I was just watching footy with sunshine and a breeze, very nice!

Had a spare day; so took the train over to Newbury to investigate this pub, which had just been named West Berkshire Cider Pub of the Year. It was a Monday afternoon, and the pub, a traditional one in the town square with several indoor rooms and an outdoor yard, was extremely quiet. So I felt self-conscious as I settled down to try the many ciders listed on a blackboard; but, of course, that wore off the more I drank. In the end I'd drunk halves of all the ciders from the left-hand side of the board and two from the right, the ones on the right all being from Lilley's. I had a chat with the owner, a quiet, unassuming man who must be very talented to select and keep perfectly so many ciders (along with an interesting row of ales). Very few pubs even approach the Catherine Wheel's level of quality and variety. But they are modest about it. Also chatted to the barman who clocked on later, himself enthusiastic and well informed about the drinks. By this time, I felt comfortable and was really enjoying myself. This unplanned outing had clearly been worthwhile. Remarkably, there was no dud among the many ciders I drank. They included Tutts Clump, a lovely, still, golden cider made at Bradfield; Tutts Clump Reading Gold, hazier, less sweet, more apply, with almost a leafy dankness; Green Shed Just Dry, made round the corner in Newbury, with almost a Kingston Black taste to its appleness, dry without assaulting your tongue; 7 Trees Orchard Press, tacky on the tongue (in a good way), with a lemony top note; and Pulp Applecraft, the gentlest, sweetest, subtlest cider of the day. Plus a fair few others, but my note taking deteriorated after that and seems to have fizzled out. Also had my tea in the pub, a lush steak-and-ale pie made by Pieminister, plus an immense portion of chunky chips. Much love to the Catherine Wheel.

Been meaning to visit for the Sunday buffet for ages and we did today!. Absolutely amazing pie and the buffet was lovely! Plenty of choice and plenty of it. The staff were all friendly and attentive. Already planning our next visit 😁

The best pub for craft beer in Newbury. Possibly West Berkshire. And gin. It does have cider but who wants cider? The answer clearly is no...

Delicious Vegan Pie! This was my second visit to this pub & I was not disappointed. First visit I had the Mooless Moo & this time the Mock a doodle, both options were excellent. The vegan cauliflower cheese was also great. My parents aren’t vegan and we’re equally impressed with the Moo Blue and the Deer stalker pies. Definitely worth a visit.

I cant rate this place high enough absolutely superb lovely cozy relaxed atmosphere the staff were great the food was great to a bit niche mainly sell pies proper pies with a pastry top and bottom good selection I opted for the venison and to massive sides of beautiful cheeeeeesy mash and cauliflower cheese I like to think I bake a nice pie and I would have been happy if id have cooked this at home did I mention the cheeeeesy mash superb

Fantastic find after an afternoon of shopping. Loads of pie options and as it was Sunday there was a buffet spread of sides. All delicious and a great selection of beers as well.

Best pub in Newbury in my very humble opinion, great beers served by knowledgeable, friendly staff, CAMRA member discount. Food was brilliant too, it's known for its pies but we had the Ploughman's Lunch, delicious and plenty of it, highly recommended.

A good town pub, in Newbury. They have a wide selection of cask ales and ciders. There are also a lot of different gins available. The staff are friendly and there is a nice buzzing atmosphere.

Any pub that wins Cider pub of the year (not just once!) must be doing something right!

I've lived, on and off, in Newbury for 20 years and never been in the Catherine Wheel, despite admiring the pie and beer options. It didn't let me down. An excellent, friendly pub with good food and a great selection of beers, cider and gin.
