We visited the pub / restaurant for a Mother's Day meal and whilst I hadn't actually visited before, members of my family had and were very positive about the experience previously: great menu, nice atmosphere, good location etc. Unfortunately, on this occasion we found the experience rather disappointing for several reasons, so much so I felt inclined to write a review: - The pub was quiet so service should've been very straight forward - The sough-dough bread which was one of the starters was genuinely stale and incredibly dry. We decided best not to mention and move on but at £6.95 it was cheeky to serve this. - On two separate occasions drinks were ordered but they didn't arrive. Again, based on the pub not being busy this was disappointing - After being given menus, no one came to take our food order for 25 minutes until we went to the bar and asked if we could order. - The main courses were nice and came promptly after ordering in fairness - After finishing our mains, the plates remained on the table for another 20-25 minutes and the waiter clocked this but didn't bother taking the plates away. Whilst this didn't bother me a great deal, considering he wasn't serving another table it was bizarre. - Eventually when they were cleared, he passed us the dessert menu and, despite being ready to order, he continually walked by us several times. I wouldn't mind this but it just seemed a lackadaisical approach. After already asking to chase drinks that didn't arrive and to order a main at the bar, should we have to chase ordering a dessert too? - Lastly, my brother at this point had decided to complain, bearing in mind that this isn't a cheaper pub, and this is the main reason for my review: he wasn't rude but informed our waiter (not sure if he was the manager too) that we were disappointed by the service throughout the evening, not in a rude way but to the point. Rather than apologise, the waiter / manager incredibly had a go back at him! This went on for a few minutes... Regardless of whether he felt my brother was right or wrong to complain, that's absolutely not how you approach that kind of job. It's that bad service, it's laughable. I like to think he'd had a bad day and that's not his normal persona but that's irrelevant. - Lastly, rather than order dessert we felt best to leave (didn't want spit in a crumble!). We asked the man for the bill and we sat another ten minutes waiting. No bill arrived. We went to the bar to ask again and the gentleman hadn't even passed the message on... As you can imagine, when the bill was paid we asked the 12.5% service to be taken off. I would like to add that the 2 younger members of staff were courteous and nice throughout the evening, it's just the older gentleman serving us that left a very bitter taste.

Having had recent excellent meals here I thought it would be good for a family celebration meal. Never been so disappointed. Two fish dishes were virtually inedible (don't understand how plaice could be so badly cooked and presented), the risotto was tasteless and the steak "ok". We had scallops, steak, battered fish and apple crumble. All very delicious. Only reason for 4 star on the food is because I would have preferred fish not battered as a healthier option. Didn't see one on the menu. Maybe I didn't see it or I should have asked if that could be an option? The sauce that came with the scallops was very tasty but not sure it went well with the scallops and at that the price, more than 2 would have been good. We still ate them though as scallops were good. Service was excellent and really like the decor and atmosphere. We're local and The Carpenters Arms has always been our favourite local restaurant. Very happy that standards are great still, albeit a little excessive now. Sign of the times. Well done, though. We'll be back at some point.

Hi I used to visit your restaurant very often. Recently, I went with my family, had a lunch with family. The food portions are a lot of smaller than we used to have. My husband's onions on the sausages were all burnt. I ordered fish, it was very small piece with tiny cut bit potato. We found it very over prices too. The service was slow and the plates were oily and unclean. We are very disappointed. Hope you guys can improve the service and the chef. Best regards, wu

The nightmare before Christmas – pub version I wanted to celebrate Christmas between friends at the pub as the festive menu looked great. The problems started when we had to negotiate with the pub for 2 of us to pre-order from the festive menu (with a deposit) and my friend and her partner to order from the regular menu (everybody at the same table apparently HAD to order from the same menu??). We then asked for a 5th adult to be added, and the pub asked for my friend and her partner and the 5th person to pre-order from whatever menu. So the experience before the meal was already quite annoying. On the day, the staff couldn’t find our booking and table. It then turned out that no 5th adult was added. The manager (or someone who works with the manager) came to our table to understand what happened. It perspired also that my original festive menu pre-order (despite the deposit) had not been taken into account and that only my friend, her partner and the 5th person had their food ordered. Despite email proof for the 5th person to be added, and when trying to explain what we did to sort out the menus before the day, the person who “took care of us” rudely spoke over me, making it clear that she didn’t want to hear anything and would not accept the pub’s responsibility and admit their mishandling of the whole booking from the start. Not even an apology, but more of a “deal with it, tough” attitude. Lovely! My husband and I had to order from the regular menu, so my Christmas feast had a regular burger for main. On top of this, my little girl’s food arrived after 1 hour of ordering – she was starving and kept asking where her food was! I was so much looking forward to that Christmas meal. Instead, because of their incompetence, lack of communication, and poor, ridiculous management, the pub’s management team ruined my lunch and experience. Once fooled, not twice. We will not go back to this pub anymore, preferring to go to the other pub further down the road which doesn’t make things so complicated and prone to problems, and where clients are treated like clients, not idiots.

Used to be just in the bar area, but now in restaurant too? We had to listen to a very yappy dog throughout meal (owner should have taken it outside) and then a table next to us came in with two dogs, set up a smelly dog blanket right behind our seats… no I don’t want a pudding now thanks… and I have a dog myself (which was at home) so this isn’t coming from someone who doesn’t like dogs. You know the little tiny dish you get condiments in, that was the portion of peas, good job really, cold, tasteless and not mushed at all. The fish was not cooked, made me feel nauseous. Chips nice though. Pudding not worth a mention. As for the service, we walked into the pub to ask to be shown to our table, the woman just walked off, left us standing there, said she thought we was "with that other customer" I didn't make a fuss because my son and I were here on the anniversary of his dad, my husband's death, it was a pub we used to go to as a family.

Three out of the 4 meals were ok but not special. Unfortunately a number of the fish dishes included bacon. One of our guests was especially disappointed with his meal. The tagliatelle was described as including crab but it didn't. When he asked about about the omission he was told the taste was only meant to be in the sauce. This was not what he was told a few weeks previously when he had asked about the lack of crab. Then he was told the chef had forgotten to include it. Although the waiter went back and forwards to speak to the chef we were left with the impression that we were not taken seriously. It really needed someone more senior to come and discuss our concerns.

Following some negative reviews and reports we thought the best thing was to try out for ourselves as the "Carps"had always been good when a Brady pub. Pint of Harvey's, gin and ginger ale, bottle of merlot, 2 haddock and chips and then two desserts just shy of 90 quid. Very good food, nice wine but not the sort of expense we could afford on a regular basis with most "staple" dishes all around the £17.00 mark (even ham egg n chips). Will definitely return though. SECOND VISIT 08/07/23 Unfortunately our return visit didn't live up to the expectations following our first visit. Group of six this time, two of them having travelled down from Suffolk for a break........awful (Young's) sausages, ok burgers, passable fish and chips, 2 chipped water glasses and one cracked. From walking in the general feel was, for a Saturday evening, very quiet, alway used to be heaving and by nine-ish we got the feeling the staff were just wishing for the last diners to eat up and then call time. New owners aren’t always better. We are reasonably regular diners in The Carpenters and always enjoyed our visits. Closed for refurbishment and now reopened. The refurbishment is good and the bars and restaurant look lovely. A welcoming smile on arrival and shown to our table. Unfortunately there was food and napkins on the floor, but the food was soon cleared up. New menu and new drinks! But we had plenty of time to consider what we wanted as nobody seemed to want to take a drinks order. But when they did we found that not all the new spritzers were available as “we’ve been open for a few days and have sold out”. Why offer what you can’t deliver? The food offered seemed a little ‘ordinary’ compared to the previous options - maybe that will improve in time. The food was ok but the service continued to be slow. Hard to get someone to take a drinks order and hard to get the drinks to the table. Will we be back? Probably, but not with as much enthusiasm as previously.

Looking forward to a pleasant lunch with a friend, we felt quite disappointed. First the good points: The outdoor covered area is very well done and is a nice space to sit and eat; the young staff were friendly and efficient. What spoiled it for us was the food. My wife and her friend had the mushroom tagliatelle. The size of the helpings was incredible, both ladies felt daunted before they even started eating! There was too much sauce, quite watery on my wife’s plate, and it all tasted very bland. My wife managed to eat about 1/6 of hers and our friend 1/3. What a waste! I had the pulled pork wraps. The issue with this was that the exterior of the wraps was dry and hard, like cardboard. I had to scrape the filling out and could barely eat any of the bread. The pulled pork was OK, the chips were OK, and the salad was, well, a salad.... as I said, we were quite disappointed and will not be returning soon.

No wine glasses were bought out with the wine and when we asked for some they said they didn’t have any and we had to use champagne flutes. Two of us ordered steak which was ordered medium but was served raw. They recooked the same steaks but they came out 10 minutes later looking exactly the same and were before and were inedible. When we ordered dessert, one being ice cream. They brought out the wrong flavour and when we pointed this out to them they waiter shrugged his shoulders and was unhappy that he had to go back and bring the correct one. Cutlery took so long to arrive that the ice cream had melted. Coffees didn’t arrive and the waiters were blaming each other as to why. Drinks service was slow. It was a surreal experience.

The friendliest of staff, all so smartly attired, excellent food at most realistic prices.....we could not have asked for more. "Al fresco" dining but with overhead electric heaters ( if required ) just made the whole experience ACE !Thank you, Carpenters Arms, for a great lunch.

You must visit this lovely boutique hotel and restaurant/pub. We had a lovely day with staff that are genuinely pleased to see you. The atmosphere is great and the gardens are designed so that you are not seated so closed to each other. You feel safe with lots of hand gels placed around the garden and pub area. The menu is varied as is the drinks and a genuinely lovely pub to visit Tom and all his staff are a great asset to this pub and boutique hotel. A visit is a must. Be back soon.

Enjoyed our first visit here on a recent evening out, food was generally good although I’d have to slightly mark the curry down from a 4 to a 3 as it was just ok. However if you want a curry go to a curry house! The only reason we had curry is they had run out of steak which is what we really would have preferred. So overall I probably would have rated it 4.5 if the steak had been available and if it was good. Will give them another try later this year

Worst meal for a long time. Service awful and food just as bad when it finally turned up (circa 90 minutes after ordering). Actually regret not walking out before the main course arrived leaving a token donation for what we had already received. Will never go back!!!!

Visited with family today for lunch and had a wonderful time. A member of our party hadn’t been well and we requested a quiet table in the back garden which they were happy to accommodate. Food was beautifully presented and piping hot. Good service and warm weather too. Will definitely return!

We were just passing early evening mid week. The pub/ restaurant was not busy and we felt comfortable sitting inside, although there is extensive seating with cover outside for good weather. The restaurant was well ventilated by open doors. The tables and bar area were all clean and well maintained. I would recommend the chicken wings, burger and chocolate brownie- all yummy. Food was hot and well presented. Prices were reasonable. Service is functional, no pleasantries but at the same time not unfriendly. We got the impression the restaurant got busier in the evening as several couples/groups arrived as we left. I would recommend the bar/ restaurant and would return.

Went for an early dinner, just passing and as recently opened following COVID. Inside was nice. Good to see all door open and seemed very COVID aware. All orders are taken from table. Pleasant reasonable priced meal, good standard. Staff seemed functional, rather than friendly, however if you been closed for such a long time. Overall we will be back in due course.

The staff were not very friendly & welcoming, we had to wait ages for someone to take our order, the food actually arrived before our drinks! Disappointed the steak & ale pie didn’t come with chips or potatoes. Sorry, won’t be returning.

We were in the area and as we aren't allowed to stay with friends we booked into the Carpenter's Arms for one night. The room was good, very comfortable bed but it was the staff and the food that were the stand out elements. Every single member of staff was friendly and smiling making for a really great experience. The food is exceptionally good - not fussy but good quality and really well executed. Great value at £80 a night for the room. I made a mistake with the booking - wrong date - and was charged twice but my money was refunded with no fuss at all. Great service all round. We will definitely be back again.

This pub is a long time favourite of ours and we were excited to be able to return. We were surprised that the greeter and all the waiters were not wearing face masks.I know we were sat outside with plenty of fresh air and it’s fine that diners who are all distanced are not masked. However, when the people bringing your food have breathed over it all the way from the kitchen to your table it makes you feel more than a little uncomfortable.... and it makes you wonder what’s happening indoors. We shall not be returning until masks are not a necessity

Arrived a few minutes early for our 6pm booking. Outdoor dining looked amazing so we were really excited. Waited some time for someone to speak to us about being seated, we were ignored a few times. Finally sat down in a dark cold corner, we were told someone would bring us menus and take a drink order in a few minutes. Saw numerous staff pass us, but again we were ignored. We then saw another couple seated, and they were given a choice of where to sit, which we weren’t, they were also sat with menus. 15 minutes passed and still no attention from the waiting staff. Completely understand that it was the first Saturday after re-opening, however when we saw a member of staff go to a new table of people near us and ask if they needed drinks or orders taken, we had enough. We had been sat in a corner that is out of the way and clearly ignored by staff. We left at that point. Disappointed.

We booked a table here a week or so before when asking to park for a walk. Coincidentally we booked for the night that turned out to be the last night before Lockdown 2Apart from running out of some draught beers which was understandable our meal of crayfish salads, whole plaice, mushroom linguini was served well cooked and piping hot if not a little tardy for the main courses. Puds of brownie and salted caramel ice cream.Service from Ella was exemplary, friendly and efficient. A fair adjustment to the bill was offered to compensate for the main course delay and lack of ale issue. We will return when Boris allows us to.

On a recent 3-day mini break to Kent we discovered this little gem within minutes of our hotel. We had an early evening meal there on our second day and decided we need look no further for excellent food and service. Felt very safe with the social distancing and more than happy with the cleanliness. Allison and Becky and a few of the lads looked after us so well with professionalism and humour. Thanks to all the team.
