The Carpenters Arms in West Oxfordshire

Popped in for a meal one evening as we hadn't been for sometime. The menu hadn't changed since our last visit and the meal we had was average. We found the service slow and staff behind the bar were certainly not on the ball. Although the food may be good the cleanliness throughout leaves a lot to be desired and needs to be addressed. Cushions were stained, tables dirty with beer stains which hadn't been cleaned and dirty beer glasses left on the bar counter. Added to which the windows were really filthy.

A lovely cosy pub, nice for families with children. Food was exceptional, I recommend the stone bass & then the pannacotta for dessert! I went there with my 3 children all under 10 years of age; our waiter was very attentive & patient with my kids. I don’t know his name, but young lad with shoulder length hair, gave us superb service, even though he was the only FOH staff that evening. Highly recommend!!! Would go back again!

A lovely cosy traditional pub serving excellent food. The chef, Tom, should be commended along with the friendly staff whose service was first class. A great find, somewhere we will definitely be returning to.

Had a midweek meal here. Decent food, fantastic service, great landlord! Great range of beers, great pub quiz on Wednesdays. Nice to be in an independent non-chain authentic village pub. Wish we lived closer

1st visit here. Good location, just outside Burford centre. Plenty of parking. We arrived in the dark so can’t comment on the garden etc. staff very friendly and welcoming. Good menu, good range of drinks. Steak was very good as were all our meals. We sat near the log burner which was very welcome as we had been out all day in the cold. Would recommend to anyone seeking a decent meal and good service in the area.

A very traditional atmosphere in this pub. The food is good and they have a good variety of drinks. Dog friendly with treats on the bar and bowls of water. A cosy place to be in the winter with a log burner going and there always seems to be plenty of customers here. Certainly one of the better establishments in the vicinity. Could do with being re decorated is my only negative.

We had arranged to have lunch with some friends and decided to visit The Carpenter's Arms after a lovely meal a few months ago. Once again we’re very impressed by the food, ambience and friendliness of the staff. We will definitely be back again as the menu has many more options to try, but my favourite this time after a lovely roast was the Apple and Blackberry crumble - gorgeous!

We enjoyed going to this wonderful pub. Great, friendly waitresses. We went on a Thursday night which has a good fish menu. The fish was cooked to perfection and was a delicious meal. Thank you.

Firstly I must say the food was nice and was a fair price. I asked for a large glass of Merlot and was given a Sangiovese I was not advised of this, hence I was too happy with the wine. But did drink it. I did not realize until I read the bill after departure the wine error, at the time I just thought it was possibly a less expensive wine., £8 for a large glass. Very disappointed with the condition of the table and the cover of the window seat could do with a good wash or replacement.

We booked a table for 6 of us on Saturday evening as we were staying nearby for the weekend. The atmosphere, the food and the staff were all very good and a lovely evening was had by all! We all ordered different dishes and everyone was hot, tasty and served with a smile. I would definitely recommend the Carpenters and would happily return should we be in the area again.

Great food, beautiful pub and friendly staff. Unfortunately when the bill came we were charged £20 for what we thought was an £8 soup. We asked if we could have the soup on the starter menu as a main, and were advised to order bread separately. It was only when the bill came that we noticed that we were charged for double the amount of soups we had ordered. When we questioned this we were told that as we had upgraded the soup from the starter to a main they had doubled the price from £8 to £16 + £4 for the bread. £20 is very expensive for a bowl of soup and bread, especially given this is more expensive than the half chicken on the menu for £16 - feeling ripped off :( A shame as otherwise this could have been a lovely lunch.

Absolutely amazing food. We had the chargrilled sea bass and monk fish. My very fussy eater son had fish and chips but asked for baked beans too which they went out of their way to provide us with. The sticky toffee pudding was to die for. Staff was amazing. Definitely coming back

Very good food - fresh and made with care. Service spotty. Chairs super uncomfortable. Side conservatory room lacked ambiance and was awkward, probably nicer in the summer when the room is open to the terrace for dining. but I’d go again for the food.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal - the chicken croquettes were especially delicious. The staff made a big fuss of our dog which was really nice. Would highly recommend.

My wife and I spent a week in Burford and this absolute gem is well worth seeking out. It's about a 10 minute walk from the centre of Burford or a short drive with a sizeable car park. We enjoy fine dining and this compared very favourably with any Michelin experience we have had previously. The fish was superb, the ale is well kept and the suggested wine pairings for the desserts spot on. The staff were attentive and friendly and the prices very reasonable. We would certainly return

Staying in Burford and have been bit disappointed with the pubs on the high street expensive and poor beer. Walked up and had a drink at the carpenters. Lovely atmosphere and very friendly staff expected to pay a fortune for our drinks but cheaper than Burford high street and good beer. Went back for lunch for a sandwich it was excellent i had the steak baguette it was delicious and you got a side taster of cauliflower soup which was so tasty. We have booked to go for dinner would definitely recommend it is worth the 10 minute walk from Burford high street.

Booked a table for 4 online for a Saturday midday lunch. Greeted with a smile and were able to choose a table. Drinks brought to table. Good selection of food. Nice vegetarian options. Food served hot and all had different dishes. All good and reasonable prices.

We had some great meals in the Cotswolds during a recent stay but this one was so-so. Went on Thursday night for "grill night" but 4 of the menu items (all fish) were "unavailable due to the weather" (it was unseasonably warm but not sure what this had to do with anything). The food we ordered was not bad, just bland. Wait staff was very friendly and sitting outside in the tent was nice. We just had better meals elsewhere.

I want to rate far higher than 5*. Highly recommend. Absolutely splendid! We had a viewing at Asthall Manor On Form Sculpture Show and had a lunch booking at The Swan Inn in Swinbrook which was fortunately cancelled due to closure because of rain.We decided to book a lunch at The Carpenter's Arms and my gosh! What a treat!The food was fine dining without the price tag and the service was perfect. Accommodating and friendly with a beautiful covered and heated outdoor area.Most definitely one of the best pubs I have dined at in a long while.A massive thank you to the staff for being so lovely. We will be back soon!

Lovely meal after a country walk, we were there for “chargrill Thursday” and the menu choices were excellent as was the food and the staff. Highly recommended.

Wonderful afternoon! We had a great meal for 9 of us to celebrate my sister's birthday. The food was great, especially the fish and delicious puddings. Even the house wine was very good. The weather was horrible, but we are still not comfortable eating inside anywhere yet, so had a table in the garden. We were sheltered from the rain and wind, had patio heaters and blankets and had the best afternoon we have had in a year.The staff are welcoming, efficient and friendly. We were so lucky to get a table here at short notice, after a booking at a nearby hostelry was cancelled due to the weather! The Carpenters Arms is SUPERB - the service friendly and efficient, the food exquisite, and the surroundings comfortable and welcoming. We will definitely be back.

I took my boyfriend here for a birthday trip and we were excited to try this pub! We were not disappointed!! The staff are so lovely, and the menu was exactly what we were hoping for. We all know English weather can be unpredictable but don't worry, Ryan and the team literally have you covered with a gorgeous outside heated area! The food was exquisite, we can see why they are Burfords number one pub!! We cannot wait to return x

Booked in for a garden late lunch on a rainy bank holiday Monday, and very glad that we did. The large covered outside dining area, with heaters and blankets, was great for a 3 generation family visit. The food was from an upmarket bbq menu, which was tasty and filling. Good beer too, and all combined with friendly, attentive service. Will visit again if in the Cotswolds.

Visited The Carpenters Arms twice over a long weekend in April! The food was incredibly delicious and the drinks selection was great. There were plenty of heaters and blankets for the cooler evening. Would 100% recommend for lunch/dinner/drinks if you're in the area.

We went during COVID so had to sit outside! Provided blankets and lots of outdoor heaters so we had no trouble keeping warm outside!! The service was amazing and the staff were really friendly and helpful!! Very happy with the experience :)

Being discerning (some might say snobby, ahem) restaurant goers, my husband and I could not believe our luck when finding the Carpenters Arms. We’ve been 4 times so far and it’s always excellent. The food is like you’d find in a top london restaurant rather than a country pub. Service is friendly and spot on.

Great service, fabulous staff and the most amazing food. Cannot recommend highly enough. The vanilla panacotta was divine. This was our second visit in a few weeks and every aspect of both visits was excellent.

Having wandered around the Cotswold Wildlife park, just before the heavens opened, we thought we’d see if there was availability (given COVID and half term no guarantee). We got lucky, and had a fabulous meal and experience!!! We were cutting it very fine (with the kitchen closing at 1400) but the staff and chef accommodated us with no fuss. The service was very friendly, the food was very very good and the Halloween themed entertainment for the children (pumpkin carving combined with a charity donation) was inspired.We had fish and chips, sausage and mash, a burger (which was amazing), sticky toffee pudding, crumble (all the autumn fruits) and a panna cotta - portions were perfect and everything was polished off!!! In all, a great experience and somewhere I can’t recommend enough!!!

The pub quiz on a Tuesday night is great, and we had a delicious meal, and the quiz master is fab. I hope it continues occuring on this weekday, locals are banging.

Spent 5 nights in Burford ate out each evening, of all the places the Carpenters Arms was the best for food, Tom is very friendly and chatty made us very welcome and the food was excellent. Would defiantly recommend.

We have had a wonderful casual lunch with our dog sitting in the pretty beer garden. The staff are so welcoming and accommodating, and the food was great. Very Covid secure too. Thank you!

Me and my partner were staying locally and decided to book in at the Carpenters. We had 3 courses each which were all absolutely fantastic. Special mention to the salt and pepper squid with pork belly.... WOW. Ryan front of house was brilliant, attentive and friendly. Compliments to chef tom for such a great memorable meal! A must try!

Absolutely delicious 3 course dinner had by myself and partner. The staff were all really friendly, knowledgeable and generous with their time, when explaining courses and suggesting wines to us. I had the heritage tomatoes to start, followed by the special which was the mackerel, and coffee creme brûlée. My partner had the pigeon, venison and then the banana parfait. All the courses were really tasty and cooked to perfection. I highly recommend this place. We’d never been before, but went on the Tripadvisor reviews, they didn’t disappoint. We will definitely return.

Went for afternoon drinks and ended up staying for dinner.The service was excellent, all three members of staff who served us were really polite and friendly and just came across as genuinely nice people.We were both full up from our lunch at the Upton smokery so my fiancee had the salt and pepper squid and pork belly Asian salad starter and I had the cheese board for our mains. My fiancee said her salad was amazing and the four cheeses I had were a decent size and came with nice red onion chutney and some ok crackers (all the same type unfortunately) which was just what I needed. We both had wine (Sauv b and malbec) and they were a generous size and both really good quality.We will definitely be revisiting.

We happened upon the pub as we couldn’t park in Burford where we had arranged to meet family for lunch. How lucky were we! We were made very welcome and the food was sublime! I had the Sea bream which was absolutely lovely- really tasty . Others had lamb rump, fish and chips and the torched aubergine which they all loved. Sadly no room for dessert as I love sticky toffee pudding- next time!! Lovely experience thank you!

Lovely food. Great service. We were just expecting regular pub food. How wrong we were. Delicious and completely exceeded our expectations. Was more gourmet than regular pub food. Staff were fantastic and they were so welcoming to both us and our dog Archie. I could see the manager working with his staff in such a caring manner. So nice to see a good manager respecting his team and training them. Everyone including the chef wanted to know if we were happy with our food. Could not fault a thing. We went on Thursday which is their grill night. I had the swordfish and my husband had the plaice. We started with a lobster shrimp lasagna which was so yummy. Good portion sizes and just great all round. Thank you.

Booked a table here based on Tripadvisor reviews and we weren’t disappointed! Fantastic service, food and atmosphere. Highlights were the Bream, fillet steak and sticky toffee pudding (which is now number 1 in my son’s books, and he has tasted many!!!) wish we were staying here longer so we could come back again!

For £24 a steak I would expect more than just a steak a handfull of salad and 5 chunky chips that were very bland and undercooked.

The food was of very high quality, i would highly recommend. Both staff members were lovely and made us feel very welcome

Just had an evening meal at the Carpenters Arms in Fulbrook. As usual, the service was very attentive - Ryan especially is welcoming and great on advice as to choices. One of us had lobster, which was very tasty and the other torched aubergine, which was a great vegetarian option and good for something light in hot weather. Wine (rose) and beer were well chosen. Well run on the Covid 19 front - didn't feel at all insecure about that. All in all a great experience and highly recommended.

We found The Carpenters on TripAdvisor, reviews were brilliant so we thought we would try it out whilst visiting Burford. We arrived much earlier than our table time, but decided to have a drink 1st - We met Ryan at the bar who was great, he explained we might need to wait for a while as it was really busy for our food - which was no problem due to how early we had arrived. We were seated in the conservatory after he had helped us with a local gin and beer choice - and they they were excellent choices! He was very attentive throughout the service, keeping us informed and gave us another great English local sparkling wine choice - beautiful! Then the best bit - the food! We have rarely eaten such a good Sunday lunch - the beef was probably the best I’ve tasted on a pub menu - it was absolutely beautiful - the starters and Fish main dish were also amazing.As a previous recruiter, for a large pub company, the staff here were amongst the best I’ve encountered anywhere! They were all extremely friendly, polite and efficient - what a wonderful place to visit - we will 100% be back again very soon! Thank you for a lovely afternoon.

We have visited the Cotswolds this weekend with the family and visited the carpenters arms on a few occasions.We have been blown away by the incredible food we have had along with the most fantastic customer service from start to finish. We are a family of mixed ages and they have something to cater to for all, I have a 1 year old boy who absolutely loved the garden with all the toys on offer , it’s safe and child friendly, meaning the adults can relax and enjoy the gorgeous food and drink on offer. There is also a gorgeous kept beer garden where we ate on both occasions which has lovely furniture which is so welcoming and clean. What a absolute gem.All staff at the carpenters arms are brilliant, lovely and friendly and very helpful, Ryan who is front of house went above and beyond to ensure we had the best time from start to finish , catering to all our needs immediately, his lovely smiley face with 5star customer service made our experience wonderful.The food we have had over the weekend has been incredible, both times we visited we had 2 or 3 courses , ranging from delicious fresh salmon with homegrown herbs from the garden , burgers and a gorgeous Sunday dinner and many more dishes from the delicious menu they have on offer ! Everything we have had was incredible, fresh and so tasty. The food here is cooked fresh to such a high standard, gutted we don’t live closer as this would 100% become our favourite place to eat regularly!Thanks to all at the carpenters arms for making our Cotswolds weekend incredible what a absolute gem of a pub!

Booked in here after our 33mile Burford East cycle. Ryan and the team were very welcoming and we enjoyed a Cotswold gin and tonic in the garden followed by great starters and fish and chips at our table in inside. Great service, very friendly. Can highly recommend. Nice to be away from the crowds in Burford. Obviously popular with locals.

We have just enjoyed a fabulous lunch at The Carpenter’s Arms. The food, service and drinks were all 5*. I would certainly recommend a visit and we look forward to coming back sometime.

Stopped off on two occasions during a family holiday. Very welcoming with two kids aged 7 and 10yrs, seated outside quickly. Drinks and food orders taken efficiently at the table. The food menu whilst not cheap was outstanding. The confit salmon and braised octopus starters were presented nicely and were an absolute joy, fish n chips thoroughly enjoyed by the kids, no kids menu, but they're happy to do smaller portions. I stopped on two consecutive days, the small menu changed, telling me they have a high turnover of produce and specials, the fish in particular was wonderful. Lamb rump was cooked beautifully with seasonal veg and an outstanding gravy. The management and chef obviously love their craft and it shows, I would return without hesitation.

Lovely pub. Ryan and the gang made us feel very welcome and the food was probably the best I have eaten. The fillet steak was amazing - it melted in the mouth. Burgers were huge and very juicy. We had to have a game of cards before we could manage pudding because we were stuffed but judging by the main course we just had to have pud. The sticky toffee pudding and cheese board did not disappoint. Delicious. Lovely family garden both good for kids and dogs. Covid rules applied without fault . Well done guys. Will be going back soon.

Last night with some trepidation my friends and I walked from Burford to this place, not quite knowing what to expect. It turned out to be by far the best meal of our trip, in fact the best meal I've had this year! An easy walk - footpath all the way, and friendly welcome that made us feel instantly comfortable. The food and wine suggestions were all exceptional, I would go there again in a heartbeat. Highly recommended, thanks fir such a great evening.

We went here on the recommendations of Pete and Sally at Star Cottage B &B. It was so lovely the food was fantastic, the people running the pub were friendly and hospitable. My fiance works in the industry as a landlord and was incredibly impressed (and will be stealing lots of great ideas) of how wonderful our experience was. From the enthusiasm of the initial booking, the friendly and informative welcome on their Covid rules to their enthusiastic service and outright delicious food. It was totally worth the 1.5 hour journey and we have decided it will be our regular family meet up spot from now on.Thank you for making our first family get together since lockdown so special!

We went for Sunday lunch last weekend. We had a delicious meal in a cosy corner, beautifully cooked and served by knowledgeable staff. There was a huge amount of well cooked vegetable with the roast beef. The salmon was perfectly cooked. We both had dessert. The liquorice pannacota was superb, just a hint of the flavour on a bed of seasonal rhubarb.

We chose this pub because of a halfway location for a family get together. We were certainly very pleased with the choice . Great food and really welcoming service. Everything felt just right. The pub also had a good atmosphere which was helped by locals calling by. We'll certainly be back.

This historic pub/restaurant was taken over by new tenants last summer and this was the first time we had eaten there since they took over. The food was delicious, the service prompt and attentive and the prices reasonable. What more could you ask for?

12 of us inc 3 vegans. They made a menu with 2 choices for them. Great food and drink. Fully recommend.

We called in for dinner as stopping at a B & B in Fulbrook and The Carpenters Arms was recommended to us. We were not disappointed! Beautiful food, inventive and delicious and not ridiculously priced - lovely, friendly staff also.

I ate here for a late lunch, we had a beautiful plate of roe deer with red cabbage and dauphinois potatoes, and a curried monkfish with onion bhajis and charred cauliflower. Both were absolutely stunning dishes, the pub has a lovely family atmosphere and very dog and child friendly.

Wednesday grill nights are now a permanent fixture in our calendar. Beautiful fresh fish and meets grilled to perfection. Great wine list and quite frankly the best cauliflower cheese I have tasted. Warm friendly welcome.

If you want to taste Michelin star quality food then make sure you book yourself into the next feast night at the Carpenters arms. Five courses of gastronomic heaven. I have eaten at every feast night since they started and they never fail to impress. Choose the matched wine for a truly special evening. It can’t be long before these guys get their first rosette for their food. The last time I ate there one of our party who doesn’t drink wine had her own gin paring menu crafted for her to complement each course, wonderful. I can not recommend this restaurant highly enough.

This was our first visit to The Carpenter's Arms and it won't be our last! We arrived to a warm welcome from the staff, and enjoyed a fabulous meal. Some of us chose from the smaller, fixed price menu, and some from the a la carte menu - and none of us could fault the food.

Stopped of here on way back home for lunch. Wasn't quite sure of its location but it was outside Burford to avoid the chaos of town centre. The assistant (I think the owner) served our drinks and took our order for drinks and food. Food came relatively quickly and was cooked as i requested (duck = pink!). Very tasty as was my wife's

Dropped in for lunch to be met with an empty very cold pub, no fires on and heating barely taking the chill off, no music, no staff! Eventually someone came and gave us 2 dirty menus, (I would have left at this point but my wife suggested we stay and try the food that everyone raves about). We ordered a pint of the only ale they had on draught and a glass of white wine, both very sub standard! We ordered the burger and for £14.00 each I would have expected a little more than a few leaves of lettuce and a small saucer of thin fries, the burger had some onion relish underneath that had obviously been taken straight out of the fridge rendering the whole burger as cold as the room we were eating it in!!!

A large group of us had lunch at this pub and it was outstanding. The cosiest, warmest and most welcoming pub we have been to in ages. I just wanted to sit in front of the fire all day! £20 for a three course lunch which we could not fault. The new owners are a delight and their service is outstanding. We will definitely be returning!

We had a fantastic set lunch for 16 of us celebrating a special birthday. The pub is welcoming with two open fires, a lovely table was set up in the restaurant waiting for us and the meal was superb. Amazing value at £20 for 3 courses. We received fantastic service from all the team. The new owners are just lovely and cannot do enough for you. I watched the landlady carefully polish all the cutlery with real attention to detail. The chef is fantastic and took the time to speak to us about the menu. It's an enjoyable 10 minute stroll over the bridge from Burford. Don't miss this out if you are planning a visit to this beautiful area of the Cotswolds - very highly recommended to all

意外な場所に(田舎の町はずれにポツンと有るという意味)こんなオシャレなレストランが有るとは、嬉しい驚きでした。10月中旬に家内と2人で利用しました。レンタカーでコッツウォルズ周遊を始めた最初の夜、近所のB&B;にチェックイン後、近傍のレストランを検索し、こちらを選び予約を入れて行きました。暗い夜道の途中に明るい照明が現れすぐに判りました。英国の田舎の典型的なパブの佇まいです。レストラン部分はテーブル数５〜６程度のこじんまりした良い雰囲気の空間で、金曜日の19時過ぎでしたが、着いた時は我々だけで、その後、地元客と思われる2組が来訪。メニューの数は多くはないのですが、フィッシュ＆チップスとかローストビーフ、ハギスとかの所謂パブの定番メニューではなく、季節とか食材に応じて準備した(多分？)ちょっとしたフレンチレストランのそれでした。と言っても、サービスしてくれるのは普段着？の若い女性2人で、堅苦しさは全くありません。前菜はトリフ入ハムスと山羊のチーズのスフレを、メインは鹿の腰肉のステーキと鴨の胸肉のソテーを選び、デザート、コーヒーまで、全て美味しく大満足のディナーでした。パブの方は覗きませんでしたが、駐車場も広く、トイレも大きく綺麗です。コッツウォルズ方面へ出掛ける機会が有るなら、是非マークして下さい。お勧めです。

We have been in the UK for nearly ten weeks and have eaten in many hotels and pubs. This was one of the best meals we have had. The Chef even came and spoke to us enquiring about our meal and offering suggestions. My duck was delicious and other meals similarly well presented generous and delicious. This place deserves to do very well. I strongly encourage locals to support a chef who knows and loves good food.

Came here for dinner to avoid the busyness of Burford. Lovely pub with wooden beams and wood burning stoves and peaceful atmosphere. Menu was small but some lovely choices. I had pork loin. Partner had calamari and homemade bread with hummus, olives and homemade Greek yogurt butter. Everything tasted great and was nicely presented. Sadly the pub was a bit deserted though it was midweek. Definitely worth a visit if you want to get out of Burford’s tourist zone.

Beautiful, ye’oldie pub, good service, friendly, timely, appropriately attentive. Supper was tasty, presentation attractive, price reasonable. If I lived here I would definitely be back!

We met some friends at this lovely pub for Sunday Lunch. We are in the garden as the weather was fantastic for this late stage in the year. We all found our respective food delicious and very good value. The roast beef and rich gravy was just perfect.

We booked lunch for ourselves and family (5 plus dog!). The service was excellent but unobtrusive, the dog was welcomed and not just tolerated and most importantly the food was just great! We had checked to ensure that Gluten Free options were available for our daughter and she could have chosen 3 out of mains available on the day. Staff went out of their way to offer GF extras including yorkshire pudding, gravy and sweetmeats with our coffee, all without being prompted.

Seis de mis amigos y familiares se reunieron aquí durante el verano para comer y ponerse al día. No sabíamos qué esperar, pero todos estábamos asombrados por la deliciosa y bien presentada comida a precios increíblemente asequibles. El chef fue excepcionalmente amable e incluso compartió con nosotros cómo cocinó su cohete. Tienes que intentarlo. Está a las afueras de Burford con su propio estacionamiento, pero en realidad está a solo un corto paseo cruzando el puente.

A solo un corto paseo de nuestro be & be up, nos recibió un anfitrión increíblemente amable con una sonrisa de bienvenida. Un menú muy completo. Optamos por los especiales para empezar: langostinos a la parrilla, así como el rollo de salchicha. La comida era simplemente excelente. Una tarde brillante y me encantaría volver la próxima vez que exploremos los Cotswolds.
