The Carlton Inn in Hinckley and Bosworth

Just enjoyed a delicious dinner at this country pub. Looked forward to the Yorkshire pudding starter & it didn’t disappoint, delicious! We followed with the gammon & scampi which were very tasty & big portions. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Decent value for money.,

My partner and I have just returned from the Carlton Inn,a pub that we have visited on numerous occasions without having any problems at all and have always found the food and service to be fine on every occasion. Today the pub was busy when we visited at five o’clock but it would appear there were only two male members of staff who were looking after the bar,taking the orders, serving the meals and clearing up the tables afterwards.we ordered our meals one being a Roast chicken dinner and the other being Pork loin.The main meals arrived followed shortly after with “veg” and leeks in a cheese sauce. To be perfectly honest we were dumbstruck by the “veg”We were unable to decide whether it was fruit or veg!!! My partner thought it was plums and apricots cut up alongside something else.I thought it was cooked beetroot,parsnip and something else.We. could only determine this from actually eating it..We came to the conclusion that it was carrots,turnip and beetroot but we wouldn’t have bet on it.We ordered desserts being ice cream which was fine and Apple crumble with custard.I’m afraid to say the “hot”Apple crumble left a lot to be desired as it was cold .After having such enjoyable meals here in the past it has put doubts in our minds about any further visits.

Our regular go to Pub for the last few years, the last tenants decided to leave rather unexpectedly, however the original owners are now running the business. AlI I can say is what was always a very good meal, has only got better plus the addition of a specials board so more choice. We went on the 14th as they had a Valentine Sharing Platter on the menu for £35:00, photo below. It did not disappoint and was delicious and well presented , the place was busy, but service was excellent. The only negative comment my wife made was that her favourite Breaded Brie was no longer on the starter options but plenty of other choices. We shall be back.

Rarely do I write reviews , particularly for restaurants/ pub food as it's usually a negative experience and would take too much time, however, at 66 years of age this was one of the best Sunday lunches I've ever had. Cooked to perfection, homemade everything, beautifully presented veg served separately, lovely pub and excellent service, complimented by smartly dressed serving staff, a rarity nowadays. I just suggested that customers prefer to put their own gravy on. Other than that, faultless, if only the place wasn't over two hours away!!

We travel from Harrogate regularly to thoroughly enjoy Sunday lunch at The Carlton . Yesterday we had Christmas lunch, everything was exceptionally outstanding, menu ,food, presentation, service, atmosphere. Thank you to Catherine, James, Connie and the team. The best Christmas lunch we have ever experienced and hopefully will repeat in 2024.

My husband and I quite often visit the Carlton inn for Sunday lunch and enjoy it every time however this time they had out done themselves. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by a roaring fire and a welcoming warm atmosphere. I had roast beef and my husband had turkey both were perfectly cooked and the cauliflower cheese was to die for. Keep up the good work highly recommend.

We've been meaning to try this pub for a while and people speak highly of it however our experience sadly wasn't great. A lovely looking traditional pub inside and out. We went for dinner midweek and there were a handful of tables occupied. Nachos were good however the 'wood-fired cheesy garlic bread' was no such thing and when it arrived was clearly a very average frozen margarita pizza...I opted for the Lasagne with side salad and chips- the lasagne was soooo sweet and had little to no other flavour, the salad consisted of x2 very small baby gem lettuce leaves with some cucumber, raw onion however the chips were lovely. My other half had the pie- which was OK- the gravy let it down- again strange flavour and didn't look very home made. Sadly the drinks didn't make up for the lacking food as the signs outside suggested Theakstons might be present and the pump at the bar suggested it would be too but alas it wasn't on and the choice of other local beer was lacking. On the plus side staff were attentive and service efficient. All in all we weren't blown away as much as we strive to support local pubs we will not be returning sadly, not even for a drink.

We went to The Carlton Inn for lunch today and were really impressed. The food was all good quality, with large portions and good value for money. They had excellent gluten free options for all 3 courses and the gluten free sticky toffee pudding was fantastic. A large parking area at the rear of the pub made parking easy. The staff were friendly and helpful, and I'd recommend this Inn to anyone looking for an excellent Sunday lunch. Thank you.

The Carlton Inn is a gem. Friendly staff and a warm welcome. The food is restaurant standard served in relaxed surroundings. Plenty of room and suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Highly recommend.

fantastic place in a lovely village. booked a table with the dog and was made to feel at home straight away. plenty go locals in but all were friendly. staff were good, it was one persons first day and they did a great job. we happened to go on steak night and took advantage of this offer. and the steaks were brilliant, the quantity and attention to detail in the onion ring stack was a good touch. even had pudding and coffee which again was great value and quality. ended with a walk around the village. would highly recommend

Called in for lunch on a wet Saturday. The pub was empty when we arrived but we took notice of Tripadvisor reviews and took a table. We were not disappointed. The draft beer from Maxim Brewery was superb and the food was beyond expectations. Could not wish for a better quality of a pub lunch. More tables became occupied and the atmosphere was good with no music and people having conversations. Well worth a visit.

Popped in with my family on the off chance while staying at a local camp site, we received a warm welcome and were shown quickly to a table. We ordered a selection of mains and deserts all of which were excellent, homemade and plentiful, the beer battered haddock was super tasty! The children's meal were particularly good value, again all homemade with large portion sizes. The staff were attentive, friendly and efficient. I wouldn't hesitate in returning the next time we are in the area and highly reccomend it to others looking for good quality, home cooked food with excellent service.

We went last night for Thursday night steak night. Not for the first time. Lovely steaks with the usual trimmings. Friendly staff and lovely cold beer. Always exceptionally clean. Could not ask for anything more. Definitely worth a try.

Visited on Friday 2nd December at 7-15pm. Bar was packed, but we were shown to our table quickly and efficiently. Both the wife and I decided upon the turkey roast, which was absolutely brilliant! Huge portion and great value. Service was excellent and after a dreadful journey from 'down south' got our weekend off to a tremendous start. Highly recommended!

Wonderful pub and restaurant. We were camping nearby and booked a meal for our first night. Brilliant staff (especially Ethan). Enjoyed a great roast pork meal. Wine was good. Friendly and welcoming.

We always enjoy visiting the Carlton Inn, as we have never had a bad experience yet, so the wife’s birthday was an excellent excuse to go again. Opted for the Smoked Haddock Scotch Egg for a starter, cooked perfectly, see attached photo, extremely delicious but quite filling.For mains had the Ribeye, and again cooked to perfection with a beautiful peppercorn sauce.Although the sweet menu was tempting, had to pass this evening as no room.The only negative comment, which I think has been made before is the fact you have to fight your way through the local drinking contingent who insist on standing in the area you have to walk through, and who incidentally none of which were wearing masks, which in the current climate is a little disconcerting

Having very much enjoyed a Sunday roast here, some 18 months ago, we decided to dine here again. This time, it was for a midweek lunch, and it was very quiet - only one other table. Service was good. Decor is as I remember. Food was ok, but not as nice as last time. Others enjoyed their meals, so perhaps I was just unlucky with my choice, as the vegetarian pie was somewhat bland.

Don’t do it. The drinks were good and the waitresses were polite and efficient. The food however was disgusting. The garlic bread had no garlic on to start with and we sent both back - the replacements had raw garlic randomly distributed. The chips were horrible, the gammon had raw fat, the pie had no leeks or seasoning, the broccoli was raw, the carrots over cooked. Yuck, yuck, yuck! Don’t do it as anywhere else would be better.

We visited the Carlton for the first time last Sunday and had an absolutely superb lunch. The meals (including the best Yorkshire puddings I've ever had!) were perfectly cooked and simply delicious, and the desserts "to die for"! Service was friendly, polite and prompt: we shall certainly be coming back again!

Had an excellent steak pie with mash but my wife's fish and chips wasn't the best, batter a bit greasy and fish average. Nice interior and very pleasant staff and waitress. Good beer and gins. Probably wouldn't return to eat as there are better pubs in the area.

Looking for somewhere for Sunday lunch for four family members and me, I called The Carlton Inn as I couldn't see a vegan option for me on their website. They couldn't have been more accommodating....the lady, Cath, spoke to the chef and got some vegan options emailed to me. I chose the Wellington with butternut squash, beetroot and vegan cheese. It was served with butternut and orange puree, braised leeks and came with my own dish of steamed veg. I can honestly say it was the best vegan Sunday lunch I've ever had. Also had wonderful chocolate and salted caramel cheesecake with vegan coconut icecream. Cant recommend this lovely Inn enough.......

We returned to the Carlton on Wednesday evening after a very long absence, now under new ownership we cannot rate our experience high enough. The welcome was friendly, the food & ambience was lovely & the staff attentive. We’ll return again soon…..

We enjoyed a nice meal here last summer, on our last annual family trip to the area. They accomadated us last minute when availability was tight, post first lockdown. The meal was nice, pies a standout. We were therefore expecting the same again, unfortunately we experienced the worst meal of our current trip. Plates with well over half the food left tells the story. Burger was clearly frozen reheated. Potatoes were giant slabs of reheated leftovers. Chicken pie was good, however one was lukewarm. Service was very slow, over an hour for medicore food in a half empty pub. When it came to pay, we informed the staff of our dissatisfaction of the meal, we did get an apology. But nothing offered to come off the bill. And for the coupe de grace, the card machine didn't work so I had to leave my bank details with the staff for them to eventually take payment later that night. As our 14 year old commented, the best thing about the (not cheap) meal was the ketchup sachets. Avoid!

Old England is alive and well and residing in the Carlton Inn Carlton Husthwaite in North Yorkshire. I have just eaten the best steak and kidney pie I've ever had. Perfect gravy, steak and kidney wrapped in a melt in the mouth pastry crust. In this age of dumbing down to the lowest common denominator it's a risk to make a dish that precludes all those who don't eat offal and so you end up with a dish of beef stew topped with a pastry disc. This pie was so far removed from those dull enthusiasm sapping efforts that it was an inspiration. Come and get one whilst they are still on the specials menu. If we don't support such excellence we are part of the problem. At £13.95 it's the best value purchase you could ever make. I've left a big tip! The waitresses were all brilliant as well. We will be back for sure.

We sat outside of this lovely little pub for our meal. We had the fillet steak and steak pie both of which were delicious although the pie could have been a bit bigger! The service was excellent, definitely worth a visit.

Booked a pre - Christmas lunch having not visited this pub for at least 3 years.Sadly we were the only ones in the pub which was a real pity because the food was very good indeed.The staff were very friendly and courteous.All round a very enjoyable experience in spite of the awful weather.

Visited for lunch, even the car park is lovely! Set up respectfully for Covid, welcoming and kind staff. Had the special pate, it was excellent, only tiny thing I would say it was a little sad they'd picked to serve it with standard supermarket toast, the pate was homemade and beautiful and would've been perfect with thick granary toast to do it justice, lovely all the same.The lasgane!! This is the most warm, homely generous lasagne I've ever seen! Portion sizes brilliant, presentation A star. The chicken pie is outstanding. All round a really nice birthday lunch. We popped into the Carlton Inn, on the off chance of obtaining a lunchtime table for two. We’d been meaning to visit for almost a year, each time we had a break in Thirsk.Wish we’d visited earlier!The parking area is spacious, the outside seating area has fantastic views, the interior is cosy (but Covid compliant), the staff were welcoming and attentive and the food was awesome. The Beef Lasagne was gorgeous, the best I’ve eaten. My Wife had a Prawn Salad, which she considered equally tasty.We booked for Sunday Lunch, the following day, prior to leaving.We intend to make this gem of a Pub a regular destination, each time we are in the Thirsk area.Highly recommended!

Recommended by our favourite local farm shop (Tancred) through their family connection and they supply their excellent meat to the pub. We enjoyed a tasty homemade tomato soup and a lovely lamb kofta. The weather was kind and we were able to sit outside. Service was excellent.

A group of 10 of us stayed in a cottage near by and came across this pub. Wow!!! It was fantastic. The food was lovely and the staff friendly too. Children’s play park also on the back is a bonus and the seating area outside is beautiful. We would visit again if we were in the area. Thank you :).

Went for Sunday lunch with elderly relatives, hoping the Covid precautions would make us feel safe. Was not disappointed, all the right things were in place so we could relax and enjoy our wonderful food. The meat was juicy and tender , masses of vegetables and an enormous Yorkshire pudding with lots of tasty gravy. The puddings were lovely too, well presented and yummy

Went in on spec last week for an evening meal. Yes, as per previous reviews, the food was very good. HOWEVER, despite the surface dressing of sanitizer at the door, signs for a one way system / table service only, their adherence to the regulations in the current climate beggars believe. It wasn’t bad when we went in and we were in a corner table so distanced from the worst of it , otherwise we would have walked out in the middle of the meal. People getting served at bar, standing in groups and wandering willy-nilly around the bar area. I had to ask if they would like my contact details after we had paid. The staff member’s excuse was they thought we had pre-booked Unfortunately it was the same person who I had asked if they had a table free for our party. It was quite obvious that those just in for a drink were not being asked for their details. It is no excuse to say that these people are regulars as who is to say who was in the premises on a particular night, and at what time. Just waiting for my call from public health asking me and my family to self isolate and get tested.

Had a nice meal with the family and most of it was excellent. Normally I won't buy steak in a restaurant because its so expensive but I was in a good mood so decided to treat myself to a £30 20 oz Tomahawk steak without even knowing what it was. I was given something resembling a t-bone that was a 1/4 fat very tough and cooked medium not medium rare like I'd requested. I googled Tomahawk steak when I got home and every image I saw looked nothing like what I'd just been presented. The sea bass and lamb chops were awesome!

Visiting an old friend who took is tk this place just a short walk away. Great feeling of a local country family run pub. Food was amazing, highly recommend if yiur in the area.

We where very disappointed on our visit tonight,one of us had a dirty plate,food came to the table warm not hot,one member of staff walk passed the table at least 5 times and saw that we had finished but just ignored us. With the covid rules felt very uncomfortable with the gathering of older people stood at the bar because you could not get past them even to go to the toilet without having to touch them.

Visited for lunch today after reading reviews and confirming with owner that Covid 19 precautions in place as the well known restaurant at Asenby that we visited last week left much to be desired in this respect. There was a warm welcome and we could see straightaway that there was anti bac gel at the entrance and that tables were very well spaced. We had the deep fried brie and lamb cofta for starters followed by the best steak and ale pies that we have had in ages with good mash and veg. Made room for a sticky toffee pudding and a Carlton Mess. Had our coffee outside in the shade as it was 30C! All in all a really wonderful experience which we intend to repeat even when Boris is not chipping in with £10 each off! Had a drink each and thought that £40 was cheap for what we had. Deserves all the good reviews. Ignore anything more than a year ago as not under present ownership then.

Great tasting food at a reasonable price . Even better getting £20 through the government scheme. You would be daft not to at least give it a chance while the eat out promotion is on . Great staff , great atmosphere, great service . Seems to be a successfully run family business .

Visited the Carlton Inn this evening, the service was amazing and the food was even better! I had the Steak and Ale pie and it was certainly legendary! Tender meat and lovely pastry! The flavour was a real taste sensation. Cant wait to try the chicken one next time we visit! The specials board was definitely varied with slow braised mutton tagine being a hit with one of my family. Served in these beautiful cast iron dishes the meat was tender and theres not many places where mutton is on the menu and it was such a treat!Will definitely be back!

Great first impressions. Had a quality, individual gastro pub feel. As we sat down we both said that this was the sort of place we could come back to again and again. But I don't think we will... Best part was the service which was excellent - friendly, helpful and efficient. But the food just missed the mark. Nothing terrible but nothing to write home about either. We had a good selection of things from a "legendary pie" which didn't actually have a lot of flavour to scampi which had such thick and gooey batter that it was like those Chinese dishes you used to get in the 1970s. I feel terrible writing what seems like a poor review. It isn't - hence just scraping into 4 stars thanks to the service. Maybe we were just unlucky but nothing we ate had a wow factor. It really wasn't bad and we have friends who have eaten here and enjoyed it. We expected more... such a shame.

The Carlton Inn was recommended to us by the owners of our accommodation - we were staying nearby for the week - who said it was their favourite. Having booked ahead, we visited for Sunday lunch. The welcome was friendly and we were soon seated and orders placed. The roast was excellent - one of the best pub roasts I’ve had in a long while. I opted for the Brie & Mushroom Wellington, which was very tasty. Having sampled others’ meal, I can report that the beef was delicious. The side of veg was generous, and the cabbage a particular highlight. Also served with mashed potato, which was a most welcomed surprise. The apple crumble had the crumbliest topping I’ve ever had, though the filling and custard was a little bland. I’m told, the Sticky Toffee Pudding, and the Chocolate Brownie was very nice. Service was very friendly, though has room for improvement - after a lightning start, we were left with a table-full of finished dishes for a long time. Nice location in a pretty village.

Our second visit to this lovely Pub. This time for lunch and it did not disappoint. Fabulous, and I am not exaggerating as there is obviously a very talented chef in charge, of the kitchen. But of course you need the" same" front of house and Catherine certainly delivers excellent service. I wanted a low alcohol beer and she came up with OO 0.5% from Hambleton Brewery, which certainly hit the spot. To be honest, had I not known, I would have thought it was a very refreshing session bitter.The food was excellent and what I specially liked was the cold, slightly sour apple served with my Mackerel Timbale, a perfect combination, in my opinion of course. All for a very reasonable £55.00 and that was: Two Starters, Two Mains Large glass of wine, beer and Two Coffees. We will definitely be returning.

Just called in for a quick lunch , was first class , food was lovely and hot , taste lovely , value for money great . Young girl who served us was a little gem , so friendly and always a smile . Please keep hold of her .

We were greeted with smiley faces all round, and shown to our ‘ special room’. Being Sunday we had the 2 course option, mains and puddings. Drinks were brought to the table then the food arrived. Roast beef, pork and, of course, turkey. A couple of salmons rounded it off. The puddings were many and various and scrumptious. A good time was had by all. The waitresses couldn’t have been friendly and attentive. And to cap it all, tremendous value. Thank you all.

Sunday lunch for four. Booking ahead, we had to settle for a 12 noon table as all tables after this time were booked firm, and it certainly did get busy after we had got seated. There was a good selection on the menu. The beef and pork was well complimented by my companions and I opted for a vegetarian “Wellington” (I’m not a vegetarian but like to vary my meals) and found it very good. Yorkshire puddings were rather cardboard-like but edible and the roast potatoes were not the best we’ve had but there was plenty of everything. There was the option of one, two or three courses but we could only manage the main course. Reasonable value.

Looking for somewhere to eat in Thirsk and happened upon this through Trip Advisor - We dined on a Friday lunchtime and it was fairly quiet but the food was excellent food as was the service. It is a bit out of the way but if you are on the A19 its well worth a visit

We dined here last night after booking via the online booking form and were given a lovely little table for two just to the side of the bar overlooking the Main Street. There was a nice buzz in the bar from the usual local drinkers which to me is the sign of a good pub. The place was immaculately clean & tidy. We were offered a drink upon approaching the bar and afterwards were pointed to our table. The waitress then produced the menu. Great choice of dishes and specials to boot. When ordering I told the waitress about my allergy requirement and she soon came back to tell me that I couldn’t have the special starter so I chose something else (unfortunately something you have to deal with when you have allergies). The food was exceptional especially the venison from the specials. We declined puffs as we were too full and didn’t want to spoil an outstanding meal. The staff were fantastic and very attentive seeing to everyone’s needs as the place got busier through the evening. They let us leave our car in the car park so we could both have a drink. We will definitely be back and have already told friends who visit us frequently and they can’t wait to try it.

Pre-booked a Birthday meal for my wife and myself but had mixed feelings about going on a Sunday evening after their popular Sunday lunches. Everything went well. Although busy with the residue of the earlier lunches we were warmly greeted and seated and they’d reserved a nice corner table for us.

We had asked for and reserved a quiet table and they came up trumps. The drinks food and service were excellent. Met the lovely chef for the 1st time who was doing front of house . She refused to serve us the pate starter because it wasn't to standard,which we appreciated greatly .we will be back for sure .

Not been before, found the food at a la carte, top end, quality but with value for money prices. Judging by other reviews the change of management has not lessened the quality of food. The service was as good as any silver service hotel establishment. They will do well if this overall standard is maintained. The children's menu provides the kids with real healthy food choices rather than the usual fast food type offered elsewhere.

Family meal in the dining room. Fantastic food & service good value for money. Varied menu. Will definitely be back.

My friend and I have been meeting at this pub for a while and knew it had changed hands. Today we were delighted to find a friendly welcome from the smiley new front of house. The lunch was extremely good. I do hope old customers remain loyal as this welcome was warm and welcoming with equally good food. Their idea is to continue following the previous owner and to introduce ideas gradually. So good to feel if the wheel works no need to change it

Went with friends who had been before to find the Pub is under new management. Only found his out when the friendly staff told us of the young lady and the chef who have teamed up. They seem to be keeping up the excellent service and importantly not made vast changes to the excellent menu. My friends had the Pie which are excellent whilst I had Venison. Beautifully cooked and a little different. Would recommend if you are in the area

Visited 'The Carlton Inn' last night for the first time. Excellent food with a great menu choice! Fab service with very friendly staff. Highly recommend. Will definitely be back.

What a wonderful food experience had tonight. Spoilt for choice but what we had was well presented and full of flavour. Will definitely come again

Visited the Carlton Inn today for lunch to meet up with family, we received a warm welcome, food was excellent five different meals chosen all were well presented and enjoyed by all. We started our lunch with drinks outside in a lovely seating area with good views (good view of White Horse from the car park). This was our first visit and hopefully it won't be our last, lovely drive to the village of Carlton Husthwaite too.

We visit the Carlton, usually for lunch, and have never been disappointed by the food or the service

Had a meal recently where I chose the Carlton Special Burger....well it was anything but special, which was a shame as the pub is nice, the staff were lovely and the village very pretty. Maybe it was an off night. Chips were very nice and my fellow guest said the Hunters Chicken was not brilliant, the beer was good though. Can't say I would rush back when there are so many lovely pubs in the area.

3 out of 4 meals good. Meatloaf sang 2 out of 3 ain’t bad but the gammon was like shoe leather! Despite saying there was no response bar ‘I’ll tell chef’. Shame. Unlikely to return for a while. Oh an blood drawn on a mail sticking out of a chair

Sat outside with a drink in the evening sunshine choosing our meals, what could be better. Shown to our table and served lovely food. Great atmosphere, great service. Even a hiccup with one dish didn’t stop our enjoyment, it was all handled discreetly and quickly. Booking essential.

Absolutely love this place. Always on my list when we visit our friends nearby. Never had a poor dish and I cannot recommend highly enough. Had to force myself not to have the chicken pie for the third time running! I had haddock fishcakes and sea bass with salsa. Both perfect. Thank you to the kitchen team especially and foh.

Stuffed to the brim due to too many things on the menu I wanted to try. Our party of 4 all enjoyed our meals very much- 3 courses each. Particularly good Yorkies and gravy and chorizo scotch eggs to start, fabulous proper pies and elegant desserts. Comfy and welcoming dining room with spot on unobtrusive but friendly service. Will be back.

Dinner for 4- 3 courses. Couldn't resist chorizo scotch egg to start and determined to have the famed pie for mains> not disappointed. Pie was superb. Proper pie, not one of those stews topped with a frisbee of frozen puff pastry. Consequently, struggled to finish dessert of creme brulee.

Had the baked Brie as a starter then had the chicken and leek homemade pie for mains with an amazing chocolate desert! If in the area it’s a place you should go to. The outside area is perfect for summer.

We came for lunch on our way to Rudding Park and chose this pub based on Tripadvior reviews, we were not disappointed.

Third time I've been here now and each time it's excellent.. thoroughly attentive staff.. great beer and the most amazing homemade chicken pie.... I mean really good.. !!! Was the first time the wife and I had been out together following the birth of our youngest.. I can feel another trip out coming up soon.

I have eaten at the Carlton Inn many times over the past 10 years, and it never fails to please.

We booked the day before for 6 of us whilst staying in the area. Was recommended by our cottage owner. The good was great, the service was very good and good value for money Would use again if in the area. Thanks

What a lovely pub. Called in for a drink as was passing and it looked lovely. Will certainly be back- menu looked great, really attractive interior and a fantastic garden for the Summer. Good choice of well-kept beers- John Smiths and Theakstons- and Peroni on draft.
