I had poor food on my last visit but tonight’s decided to give them another chance.Imagine a chips shop that doesn’t have any chips! Yes, you read it right. The chips shop had no chips left. What a joke. Why would you even stay open if you didn’t have your mainproduct left?

Takeaway fish, chips and a portion of scampi… Awful.. Chips were greasy and hard, fish was pretty poor and scampi (what little there was if it) was mostly over cooked batter. Used to love this place, have had a lot of sit-in fish suppers there in the past.. Yesterday’s visit has put me off ever going back.

i have just bought 2 sausage suppers from here i am being true and honest i would not recommend the place, my wife and i drove from the Shankill Road Belfast down to there. Chips were all greasy swimming in grease in there tray the sausages were half cooked. I did try to contact the chippy direct but cannot find their website.

Was in today got a battered sausage supper and a scampi supper, the battered sausage supper was OK but the scampi was absolutely awful the worst I've ever had soggy and completely tastless but the chips were OK, I will not be back

I got terrible food about 2 years ago and stopped using Captains table. I decided to try again last year and have had several very good fish suppers & pasties, however, visited last Friday, tried to ring as usual to order but constantly engaged, eventually gave up and drove down, mentioned the phone issue and they admitted that they took it off the hook about an hour ago because they were busy, no logic whatsoever, it takes as long to take an order at the counter as it does on the phone, plus requires less people hanging about the shop for 15 mins during covid.Anyway onto the food, obviously with being so busy they decided to cut the fish in half, what we got was basically a large fish finger each, I would rather they just said they were out of fish and I would have got something else, shocking value for money.Now having said that, the quality of the fish, chips & pastie were all good and cooked just right, I just wish you would sort out your consistency with portion sizes, I know a lot of people now use the other chippy in town, as did I after my awful experience in Captains table 2 years ago, however, the other chippy in town does not have a patch on Captains Table for the quality & cooking of fish, chips, pasties etc, I just wish you would get it right all the time!!I'll try again next few days and hopefully it will be back to usual.

Food is pretty decent but a staff member made a point of being unfriendly to anyone not local. I appreciate tensions are high with covid restrictions but you can be mannerly while understanding that if your business is open then you need trade to survive.It's disappointing as the food is good but staff make up the brand. Unfortunately, I would not return.

This evening myself and my family visited this establishment as we would use your sister store in Glengormley. To say disappointed would be an understatement, as the portion sizes of an adult meal could have been compared to of a child's meal however the price did not reflect this! The size of the fish supper was more like a fish goujon. I would definitely think twice about visiting The Captain's Table again.

Two of us called into Captain's table in Donaghadee mid-week in August 2020 at exactly 8.20pm. Went to sit at a table and were told by the lady at the fryer that there is no table service as they close at 9pm!! Takeaway only!! As we live in Newtownards and didn't fancy eating in the street or in the car - we left and went to Miller's in Newtownards for a takeaway - it was delicious!!!

I normally drive out of my way to get to this chip shop and always enjoy the quality of the taste of the food on offer here. I don't know what oil is used to cook the food but the flavour and the crispyness of the chips and batter is a step above.

We took ourselves out for a chippy lunch. Arrived at the Captains Table! Their chips were great and high praise for their fish! We would recommend. Only issue might be the lack of sit-in space. I appreciate though it's likely down to Covid 19 safety. They are doing 'Eat Out To Help Out' deal. Good value

The fish and chips here, and all the food in fact, is second to none. Plus the portions would serve two people. Can't wait to call again

To die for OKed cod in batter chips lemon Fanta and a seat in Lemons' Wharf .the night was calm warm airy.the three boys were jumping into the harbour to swim.the fishermen had rods out as tide CE rushing in. An idillac place .seagulls and terns about waiting on cast away chips.chat was good craic was good captains table was clean and efficient.

My sister just ordered food today over the phone to be picked up, when they were told the price they were shocked but as it had been a while since ordering a chippie so they thought maybe the prices had gone up. They went down, paid, picked it up and left. Once home they realised that they had been given an extra kids meal (which they didn't want). When they looked at the receipt they realised they had been completely over charged, multiple orders which they hadn't ordered or received. We phoned to try and get it sorted hoping for a voucher or something. The guy on the phone was very rude, disrespectful, would not listen, would not accept any responsibility and very confrontational. We had to also explain it multiple times on the phone for 20minutes. We are very disappointed with the service and will definitely not be giving them any future service again.

Still terrible food awful and greasy fish very small portions not wort the money at all better going to Rainey’s far better food and portions r huge

called in today after a drive around ards peninsula with my wife, i asked her to get me a cod while I waited in the car. she returned about 10 min later and handed me the box with the cod, upon opening it i couldn't believe it you could have fitted at least 6 in the box for all the size it, the worst ever wont be back, this is my first time reviewing anything but feel strongly enough ,buyer beware I'm not sure if it was even cod

It's a chippy but the fish is fresh in that day and you can sit in or take out the staff are up them selves but the food is good

went for a bracing walk by the sea with hubby and decided to have fish & chips before making the journey home. We popped into the Captain's Table on the Sea Front and have a lovely warm welcome and yummy food. Please was spotlessly clean!!

Called in on the spare of the moment and wasn't disappointed. Although it doesn't look it, this place has a certain air of bygone times about it.

We visited here recently on a trip to Donaghadee and were extremely disappointed by the poor quality of the fish and the soggy, spongy batter. The chips weren’t much better and it was only as we were leaving we realised exactly why the food & interior was SO disappointing..out of a 5 star score ..the “scores on the doors” which relate to hygiene etc were a paltry 2Definitely will not be returning to this awful place.

Got taken over a few years ago apparently, new ownership has did a world of good. Really good chips, nice friendly staff, good seating area.

Great fish and chips and quick friendly service. Near the seaside. Always busy so that’s a good sign.

I’m a regular at Rainey’s, but as always, there was a long queue and I was in a hurry so why not give here another chance? Silly Boy... chips weren’t bad although a smallish portion, but my fish was a soggy thin piece of greyish stuff! As always, you don’t realise until you’re back home and opening up your meal, how poor it is. On reading previous reviews who rated this as “5 Star” I’m left scratching my head in wonderment ... either the “sit in” is much better than takeaway, or I’m too fussy. Either way, I’m DEFINITELY not going back.

Great spot right on the seafront with lovely views - staff are so good even when rushed off their feet they just get everything just right. Great range of items on the menu and particularly favourite is the cod supper - bread and butter and tea - it is delicious. Both take away and sit in - always a long line of people anxious to enjoy one of the best wee chippies ever!! Also do a delicious range of ice creams for the wee ones

Visited here for the first time tonight and the food was delicious.

This is the first time to visit the Captain's Table and what a treat to excellent scampi and chips. Portion was just right and was not greasy at all. My friend had cod and chips which too was good. The staff were very pleasant and efficient. We were served quickly. We will eat here again.

Overpriced, undersized portions. Granted not as greasey as Raineys but everything way too expensive. Owner can't take constructive criticism. Not for me. Restaurant prices, greasy spoon fare

Upon entering the restaurant it was very quiet. We waited for a couple of minutes to be seated despite the numerous staff on shift having a laugh and talking about who's turn it was for a smoke break next.

We went here with our young children after being at a party. We were meet at the door by a man asking us to leave our prams at the door, as the kids stood at the ice cream stand the man asked "are we getting ice cream or food" and I said both. He was rude and obviously didn't want us there. He said our children ran "amok" as one of them stood up to leave the inside table. This is not acceptable in this day and age. Needless to say the children were very upset.awful experience.

I visited this chippy as my children and friends were visiting the town and called into the chippy for ice cream and some chips on a Sunday afternoon. We had 2 newborn babies in 2 Prams. As soon as we went in the owner came over and said you can’t bring them prams in. I was very shocked and replied excuse me!!! They are 2 new born babies there is plenty of space for the prams and I am not lifting them out or leaving the babies in a corner. Some of our other children were up looking at what ice cream they wanted and again this was a huge issue as the children were touching the ice cream glass pointing to the ice cream they wanted. And the owner mustn’t have like finger prints on the glass but they are Children and that’s what they do. The owner constantly kept telling us to move tables and asked what were we in for and I replied some children want ice cream and others that were hungry were goin to get chips and nuggets etc. Again I got a very blunt and cheeky reply saying there’s no space for yous all here as I have my regulars coming here in 10 mins!!! I was shocked again in front of other customers and said sorry is our money not good enough we are goin to be spending plenty of money and we are visitors to the town and showing a very bad image for this town. I said fine we are leaving and we all left and I informed him

We ordered a chicken fillet burger with chips and a battered sausage supper. the chicken fillet burger was awful and when we were asked how everything was we told them it wasn’t very nice. the person appeared offended and their customer service left a lot to be desired. won’t be back.....i’ve been put off chicken burgers for life.

this is one of the worst chippys i have ever had the mispleasure of going to. Both myself and partners portions were measley and upon going up to speak to staff at front (table not even checked) was basically informed that it was tough with no help or discussion with myself. Owner is extremely rude I really hope this place sorts itself out soon - worst service I have had in years.

To be fair, the chips aren't as bad as Raineys but the portion sizes are so small they wouldn't fill a tiny 3 year old (and that's ordering a large chip). Owner needs to realise that when people pay good money they want good portion sizes. Again, prices a bit steep. I think he imagines this is a Michelin star restaurant instead of a greasy spoon. People wouldn't complain except he is so mean with the portions and so greedy with the pricing. Wouldn't even dare ask how much he charges for a cone!!!! Never again. And by the way- one imagines the 5 star reviews are written by the owner - its the only reasonable explanation.

Had a meal here and it was disgusting. The fish was soggy, found 3 hairs all together within the 4 meals I had. Through the food in the bin, wouldn’t have ever bothered bringing it back to the rude, unmannered owner. Went and reorder my food at Rainey’s where it was nearly half the price, the staff were so lovely and and polite. For the amount my order was I received two portions of onion rings for free, where in this horror box of a chippy I never got a thanks. To say I will never be back is a definite statement and I will be making sure to spread the message far! You would be better closing your door the amount of bad reviews you have or simple; change your attitude!

A random trip to Donaghadee took us to the Captains table. Fish and chips with tea bread and butter x two. We ordered one smoked cod and one normal. The staff very kindly divided them before cooking so we ended up with 2 delicious pieces of fish each. Both cooked in light crispy batter. I highly recommend the smoked cod it was cooked fresh and just flaked apart. Great food excellent service with definitely be back.

Was in donaghadee for a kids birthday party with a group of friends and children, we called in here after party and by god the staff were so unwelcoming, it was that bad we left, Not child friendly would never step foot in here again

Who writes reviews of a chippy? I never thought I’d be the one, but last week we decided on a carry out and the queue at Rainey’s was out the door so I called in here since it looked empty!! No wonder.. the fish was an 1/8 inch thick surrounded by thick batter and the chips were pale and soggy. You don’t realise this until you’re home and then it’s too late. For the price I paid I’d higher expectations, but you live and learn. MOST definitely won’t be back!

I remember going here on many an occasions when my daughter was young the atmosphere was always warm and friendly the food was good and well priced.

Well it is a tale of 2 contrasts. At 1st glance all looked good. I could feel the batter on the cod crisp under my fork. Unfortunately I dived into the chips and I was sorely disappointed as they tasted of cardboard. They definitely weren’t up to my past experience of this place. That being said the fish was one of the best I have had in a long long time. The batter was fresh with all the crunch you would expect. Had the chips been of this quality it would have been the best fish super I ever had.

Very average food for a chippy and boy bring your wallet very very expensive I’m afraid I won’t be back to expensive for what you get

This is a brilliant chippy/sit in cafe. I've been a few times (sitting in) and the quality of food/views and service have all been excellent! I'll be back. PS: The ice creams they serve look amazing.

A great chip shop I have been going to for years. Best one in Donaghadee and the only one in the Dee I use.

A beautiful little chip shop overlooking the harbour in Donaghadee. The staff are so friendly and helpful and the restaurant clean and bright. My husband and son both and burgers which they loved. I had cod and chips, fish was cooked perfectly and the batter light and crisp. All washed down with a lovely pot of tea. Yum !

With some Chippys closed on Christmas Eve my partner decided to take a run out to the nearest Chippy (4miles from home) He ordered two Cods costing a total of £9.60. Upon opening the box we were astounded to find this ridiculous size of cod in the box. Half of a fish!!! Never in my life have I received a portion of this miniture size! I have bought Cod elsewhere and have always received a full fish for the same price! It wasn’t anything special either, I’ve eaten fish from costal establishments and the fish has been much more superior. Disgusted and disappointed about the price and size.

Worth a call for chippy food. Friendly staff, great service. Nice seating area if you want to sit in.

Called in here yesterday with my husband when we were out for a wee drive.

Went in to get a meal with my partner and seen the portion sizes and just walked straight back out. As I made my way up to a chippy up the street I then seen one of the young girls who works in the captains table at that chip shop, that says enough

Had lunch service amazing food beautiful no faults great spot for lunch or tea. Excellent for children to eat out in as well.

Second visit in recent weeks & each time enjoyed the generous portions of fish & chips. Very tasty & we thought it was excellent value for money. Best fish & chips in town. Now looking forward to a timely enjoyment of the breakfast baps :-)

First time here today drivin past with family of 7 and got a table right away, staff so friendly and couldn’t do enough, best fish and chips we have had for a while and mushy peas to die for, not sure if the man was the owner but so friendly when we were leavin with the kids and ourselves with our ice cream

Called in to get sausage and chips. Chips were white and soggy and tasted of dirty chip fat. The girl serving gave the imoression everything was too much hassle and was so unfriendly. Really disappointed. Won't be back.

Good size fish and excellent chips. Service was very quick and the young girls are on the ball in keeping your order accurate. I’ve had food here several times and always a good decent meal was served by pleasant staff.

In today and got a large chip just to see if things have improved. Still skimping on portion sizes I see, as other reviewers have testified.... Large chip wasn't even equivalent to small chip portion in other establishments, chips were hard and discoloured also, seemingly reheated? Other people still saying same,and not just people with zero reviews as the owner has previously suggested.

Called in for a fish supper, asked for a well done fish, as my last experience here was a soggy battered fish. Unfortunately the same experience as before.. soggy, poor quality battered fish, and small. Chips were OK, although a few were obviously reheated as they were darker and hard.. Not a great experience, which is a pity as the cafe is quirky and eye catching right on the sea front.

Stopped of here today whilst out a family drive. Firstly we found it hard to figure out we’re to que as shelves were blocking the view. Secondly we got served by the owner who proceeded to tap his hand on the counter and tell us we’re to stand to wait on the order . The order was not to long being cooked, but when we opened the food the portions were so small and the chips were rock hard and burnt . Was a total waste of time and money

Was in donaghadee and decided we wanted a fish supper we picked this place for its clean freshly painted appearance ordered a pastie and a fish supper .The pasty was bland and greasy the fish looked nice until you picked it up and it was soaked in grease obviously placed straight into the box from fryer and not allowed to rest the chips where hard and dry and inedible if your going to charge the prices you charge you seriously need to up your game i wouldn't return.

I used to come here all the time with family when I was younger and always remember it being very popular and the food was great, so my boyfriend and I decided to return yesterday, both of us having not been in years. Safe to say this was not a good decision .. the management must have changed as the service was terrible!!!

We Use this chip shop quite a lot , But today we were disappointed which is a real shame :( our food wasn’t the nicest one of our burgers had a sauce scrapped of the burger bap ( which was clearly but on by mistake which is easily done but not the nicest especially when you don’t like that particular sauce but again an easy mistake to make but easy to fix be replacing the bap might sound small or silly to some people but when it’s for a child who doesn’t like the sauce it’s not the nicest thing for them to bite into )

Waited 10 minutes to be seated, to then be crammed into the smallest space. Waited 40 minutes and eventually gave up and left. No apology, nor told we may have a bit of a wait!

In the Donaghadee area yesterday and sought out a chippy and found the Captain’s Table. It had a sit in area but ordered takeaway as my husband wanted to sit in the car and listen to the Isle of Man TT on the radio. When we opened our boxed fish suppers we each agreed it was the smallest portion of fish we have ever received from a chippy. At £7.20 per fish supper it was in our opinion overpriced. We did enjoy the fish and chips but would have liked the fish portion to have been bigger.

I've noticed lots of complaints and it seems the owner blames the reviewers rather than the fact that his food is vastly overpriced. Unprovoked, a friend recently told me she took the grandkids out and they were all starving afterwards, yet their bill was huge. I have also found it a very expensive place and was really hungry after my meal. I wonder would the owner be happy if he was served such minuscule portions whilst eating out. His replies on here beggar belief - I think he thinks they are funny - but they just indicate someone who doesn't take constructive criticism. It would be so nice for the Captains Table to be lovely as the scenery is so pretty - but instead it has fallen into the hands of someone who charges Michelin Star prices!!! Please do make adjustments - larger portions, smaller prices and we will all be happy. Even fill our plates out with more chips - but don't allow us to walk away starving.... it just makes for hungry, angry reviewers.

Visited yesterday as I was in the area, and after my last review (which I maintain was very fair, main criticism being portion size), me and the owner seem to have got into a trip advisor sparring match. Nevertheless, he did state quite clearly that sit in customers are routinely offered a "top up" of chips and he was suprised I hadn't been offered more. Decided to give it another go, and can only say,if anything portion sizes are worse still absolutely shocking, as so many people have already stated on here. Why don't you address this Murray? Instead of getting nasty with the pros who ultimately keep your business afloat, why don't you give a fair and honest portion instead of spouting crap on here? On both occasions now I've left hungry and felt cheated tbh, whether u reckon so or not, believe me when I say, eventually people won't tolerate the way you're doing things no more, people with vote with their feet also against the way you speak to and treat people.Donaghadee is too small a wee place to be falling out with everyone, you would do well to remember that, you're running out of people to insult.

Ordered 2 large chips and they were the smallest portions I've ever seen anywhere. Rough estimate 20 chips in each "large" portion, absolute disgrace. Majority of these chips had black bits on them. Scampi portion I received 9 small bits of scampi. And a portion of sausages all at a cost over over £14. Could have got a bigger feed in McDonald's for half the price lol Been here a good few times and it's safe to say we won't be back anymore after todays travesty. Come here if your on a diet/trynna lose weight.

Portion sizes beyond small. You've heard the saying, Cheap as Chips - but obviously this chip shop hasn't as you'd think each chip was £1!!!!

Went here for an evening and has some lovely fish and chips. The fish tasted very good and the chips were just right. Desserts are a selection of sundaes or ice creams. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

The staff where very friendly and they got you seated as quick as they could there food is very good and they have plenty to offer for kids and adults

Always worth a visit . Th fish id fluffy and well battered and cooked. On a fine day there are benches opposite where you can share left overs with visiting gulls.

The fish was really lovely but some of the chips were very discoloured. It's a very clean café and the staff are very friendly. There is also a takeaway counter.....if the weather is good I would just get a takeaway and sit on the walk across the road and enjoy it. It would be cheaper than sitting in. xx

We used to go out of our way to go to the Captains Table in Donaghadee. The fish seems to be frozen now, not fresh as it used to be - which is a great shame as being beside the sea there is no excuse, bar cutting costs. It's still OK but just not as good as it used to be. On the positive side, the staff were friendly and service was quick. We would just like to see fresh fish back on the menu - you can definitely tell the difference in quality.

We were staying with our friends in Bangor, and on Monday we found ourselves in Donaghadee. The smell of fish and chips lured us in. 3 of us had the “ Special “ as it stated the portion would be smaller, glad we did as the portion was of some sizes I would dread the size of a normal meal. Our 4th member opted for a burger, she said it was delicious, asked if she wanted a portion of chips she declined, so thought it was a lovely touch that a few chips had been put on the side. We were very pleased with our fish and chips. The chips were lovely and the batter on the fish was crisp and not soggy The fish was very nice and meaty. Staff very attentive but not in your face. We live in North Yorkshire and go a lot to Scarborough where we go to the same place for our Fish and Chips which are superb, let me say The Captains Table comes a very close second. .

Get in for a fish super !! Huge portions of chips with the fish. Very clean establishment. Would highly recommend . We drove for miles to go and was well worth it !!

Had a takeaway from here this evening. I was shocked at the size of the fish and the amount of chips in a fish supper at a cost of £7.20. OK quality but cold. A very disappointing meal and my husband and still left hungry (and I don’t big portions so that’s saying something!)

Absolutely the tiniest amount of food they could get away with giving you. Better value to be had in so many other places in millisle and Bangor. One to be missed especially if you're starving

Firstly,I'm an honest person so have given it a fair rating of 3/5, proving from the outset that I'm not just having a moan, and writing a genuine review. Visited last week with my young family, was served by a pleasant waitress. Food served rather promptly which was great, but unfortunately portion size was akin to "kiddies corner". No doubt my criticism will be met with the usual caustic and facetious response, reading through other replies to reviews, I'm actually surprised people support a business who clearly has such blatantly dismissive disregard for genuine customer concerns,it certainly leaves a poor taste in the mouth. Food quality was ok I must admit, (again honesty) but left still quite hungry. I personally am happy to pay a premium for good food, service and all the other attractions of the place (caprioni ice cream is gorgeous) and the captain's does real coffee which is always a bonus, but portion sizes are frankly ridiculous. The business owner would do well to remember that customers are the lifeblood of any business, and without us,you have no business! Slagging off people's constructive criticism and genuine concerns will only be detrimental to business. Attitude adjustment urgently required, and a few extra chips ✔️

The Captains Table does great fish and chips but also is a first class restaurant when it comes to service and surroundings. It has recently been renovated but the food is still first class and very reasonably priced.

Hungry ?...yes we were. Passing through Donaghadee we seen this place that did look inviting from outside.

Went in earlier ordered a fish n chip ect..staff very friendly but unfortunately me and my partner walked out with wrong order due to no fault of our own bit embarrassed but went back owner and staff where amazing even gave us a free chip n gravy deffo will be back lovely customer service also my son is fussy with his food and he didn't complain once was absolutely perfect thanks ☺

I had been quite a few times b4 ut the first time in a long while never had a bad fish supper ever and it did not disappoint the chips and fish are cooked in beef dripping like it should always be great taste

My son is a fussy eater, but he loves The Captain's Table, so when asked what he wanted to do for his 5th birthday, it was no surprise when he said he wanted dinner at the restaurant.

Went here with my kids and partner after a great time in the park and some great scenes if the sea. Fair to say the manager is a complete idiot. Hasn't a clue how to run a business. Cheeky to customers and all he thinks about is his regulars. Fish was stinking and over cooked. My kids were being kids and told them they would need to be a bit quieter as he had a full restaurant. Wouldn't like to to see it full as was waiting 30 minutes on my meal and place had 5 tables in it. Asked 3 times how long and told it was in the fryer 3 times no wonder was overcooked. Been too David's chippy around the corner and couldn't be nicer but wanted to give this chippy a try but will stick to what I know. And I know the manager is a c**t.

My 75 year old Mummy walked from Millisle as a treat with our 6 year old daughter with her pram. When they went in, the place was empty but you asked her to leave her pram ( a silver cross pram worth £350) out of sight!! They left we definitely won't be back

Really good Fish N Chips and great customer service. Lots of choices my wife only likes cod , but i like to have haddock and they had both. The people were really friendly. We got our meals to go and ate while walking along the waterfront.

Called last night to collect food for a late tea. I had scampi and chips, my wife had chips with chicken breast. Both tasted beautiful and we were so pleased with the way we were served. The staff could not have been more helpful or efficient.

Since the new owners have taken over the captains table and renovated the eating area it’s a very nice place to nip in for a quick bite. Number one the staff are very pleasant number two the food is excellent plenty of choice. I gave them a tripAdvisor reviewed sticker as it’s well worth it. We would call in at least once to twice a month

Went yesterday staff very friendly food ok but 9.90 for a cod supper and a glass bottle of coke overpriced not worth it to be honest I won’t be going back

Not a very nice place at all. Over-priced with tiny, minuscule portions more suited to young kids. Large chip is a handful of chips that wouldn't fill a toddler, fish is tiny and everything way too expensive. Owner doesn't seem to take constructive criticism too well either.

Delicious fish and chips served by friendly staff. What more could you ask for? Oh, and the ice cream is an additional bonus. Yummy!!

I stopped here for take away cod and chips Saturday night. Polite and hospital owner offered me a free coke and a seat while he cooked the meal fresh.

I had fish & chips with Tea really enjoyed them. 1st time we have sat in from it was took over. Big improvements from the last owner.

Ordered well done fish & small portion of chips to take away. Really looked the part, large fish & plenty of chips, which were lovely and bone dry. Unfortunately the batter on the fish wasn’t crispy and it fell apart whilst eating it. Also quite a bit of liquid dripped from the fish onto the chips. It wasn’t oil, seemed more like a watery substance. A real shame as the quality & size of the fish was excellent. If the batter had been crispy I would have rated it a five.
