The best place for food and vibes in Plymouth, and one of the best shisha places I've ever been. The food is amazing and affordable. The shisha is amazing even for frequent shisha smokers (try anything with mint if you're not sure - strawberry and mint or grape and mint) . The staff are welcoming and friendly. The atmosphere is second to none and amazing for groups, solos and couples. Highly recommended all year round, especially if you're in the south west and missing the vibes of your culture.

As a keen lover of Middle Eastern food, i was utterly dissapointed by Camel, Its possibly the worst middle eastern food I've ever sampled. The lamb was over cooked, the flat breads was just shop bought, and not the fresh homemade baked nan you come to expect from a middle eastern restaurant. The chicken was boiled, and tough, and had no spices. Baba ganouj was also shop bought and not homemade, I could tell this due to the strong artificial taste of preservatives. I don't know how you can get this so wrong. Lacked good quality ingredients, and knowledge of middle eastern food. The only redeeming factor was the shisha lounge which was very pleasant, however the whole experience was a dissapointment. The lack of music and lighting in the restaurant made for a dismal culinary experience.

This is a good example of this genre which is now becoming competitive and more available in Plymouth. We use Nawroz in Stonehouse and have been once to Mesopotamia on Western Approavh. Afro Caribbean Pot in the pannier market is a good snack bar. Have enjoyed the Camel three times with friends including a Lebanese mate who teaches in Plymouth. I like the tasty range of food here, the service and the increasingly relaxed space where we can linger before and after the meal. If you feel tempted then get a group together. It's difficult to describe but culturally it's very different from most places in Plymouth and although I would not feel at any risk I think that the Camel, as with Nawroz is somewhere an single female would fit in better if with friends.

Excellent tasty food. Take a look at the new website. I went with North African friends from the university. All very hospitable but I was the only female present and wondered whether culturally women just don't use this kind of restaurant. Come here semi-regularly with my family when they're in the area. Food is fantastic, probably among the best I've ever had, and that includes food cooked by friends of the family who've lived in Jordan for years!Service is fast, friendly and polite, but don't expect the usual attentive western service - the staff are usually found watching the football and smoking shisha! They will however welcome you in and seat you. Once one of the staff overheard us talking about baklava, realised he had none, and walked to the local world food shop to buy us some, which he gave us after the meal at no charge! Needless to say we left a large tip.The food is standard middle eastern fare, lots of lamb, chicken and spices. Expect huge portions, if you have a small appetite a wrap would be a good idea, or perhaps share a main with someone else. Fantastic flavours, better than much of the food I've eaten on two holidays to Istanbul, and reasonable value as well. No alcohol is served, but there's a large selection of UK and foreign soft drinks. I recommend the fruit/malt drinks ('Barbican apple' is a favourite) and mint tea with a little sugar. The Turkish coffee with cardamom is also phenomenal and the best I've ever had, and I know how to make it at home to my tastes!Atmosphere is variable. Lunch can feel a little dead, usually with few or no other customers. Dinner is usually accompanied by a full house in the covered shisha area and a handful of diners, things are light hearted and sometimes a little noisy, especially with groups of inebriated students walking past later in the evening. One thing to try if you're so inclined is the Shisha. Shredded tobacco, fruit and molasses mixed together and set in a bowl, then vapourised by hot coals and drawn through water. An interesting and somewhat tasty experience. Probably a good idea not to mix with the coffee due to the potency of both.Opening hours are 12pm-12am last I checked, which makes it a good last-stop before a night out, or pit-stop for coffee and baklava on the way home from a concert or the theatre.

This is different from most places in Plymouth apart maybe from Nawroz in Stonehouse. This is more open operates more like a western restaurant, although the ambience and spirit is very North African and Middle Eastern. You can see the look of the place as you walk or drive by. It is close to the heart of Studentland on the ground floor of what looks to be an accommodation block. Outside is a largish area under cover where there are larger or smaller groups of men sit playing cards and smoking from the Shisha pipes. You can eat out there, but probably not at this time of year. We went inside early evening in a group of eight with a mate who had spent a year in Jordan and another four in Lebanon. He was able to take us through the large menu and explain how things were cooked and what combinations went together. Without him we would probably have been lost and not known what we would like. Maybe half of the food was well outside my experience. We had a good meal and enjoyed it. Probably came to about £22 a head. Would go back, but best with mates, didn't feel right for a couple or singles.

Came once to the previous business on this site. One good experience and one poor. The place has been completely revamped and the feel of the business is very different. Quite a few middle eastern patrons inside the dining room and outside under cover where the Shisha pipes are mostly used. As to the food, there is a good range of both hot and cold starters and mains. We enjoyed the shawarma and fattoush followed by tashreeb and kafta. While we were eating a group of students called to collect a mixed selection of sandwiches and wraps. We also saw on the menu that for £150 and two days notice you can have a whole sheep with rice and nuts! We had baglawa and ice cream deserts. We had a good time but when we go back we will try to get up a group of six or more. We came here without much knowledge but had a good evening. If you have doubts and are close by you might want to pick up a menu. You will see the competitive prices. There seems to be no website yet. Maybe the management could do something about that and perhaps they or the regulars could put some photos on this listing?
