The Cambridge Chop House in Cambridge

Popular city centre restaurant with an interesting menu. We had the rather more restricted pre-theatre option, but that was served quickly and very adequate.

First visit here, had the chophouse burger, it was delicious. There were 4 of us all having something different, the verdict from all was excellent. The staff are amazing, will definitely visit again.

Excellent food. A bit different to the norm which was a pleasant surprise. A bit noisy for me but others in our group were OK.

Location and interior are very nice, downstairs feels cosy and warm. The staff were lovely and attentive without being over the top. I ordered the vegetarian option (cauliflower steak). The cauliflower steak was the only thing I was somewhat disappointed with. I wasn't entirely surprised considering it is a place mainly focused on meat dishes but feel that the cauliflower steak itself could've been something more than just a wedge of cauliflower grilled on 2 sides. Even just some spices to make it a little more interesting. The potatoes and yorkshire were tasty, as were the greens. Overall I am still glad I went.

A lovely place, wonderful staff and delicious food. Don't hesitate and come and enjoy.

Sunday Roast: Chicken dry, Roast Beef taste great but small portions. Flat deflated Yorkshire. under cooked parsnip. Potatoes taste undercooked and old. What happened to the nice crisp duck fat potatoes. Over crowded with overcooked greens and barely any gravy. Just give us a gravy boat.

Really nice food, the place is beautiful, the attention isn’t very nice, the italian waitress is quite rude. Get someone else to attend you :)

Avoid this place is a total. Unprofessional place I come inside today for a buissness lunch … 5 table empty and dirty with dirty place … I ask for a tabe for 5 they say if the table is dirty they can’t clean than they say the place was full and busy …. Please not waste your time here ….: they need change employees here total unprofessional and arrogant people ….

We had a really nice meal to celebrate a birthday. Marcia, our waitress, was excellent, I cannot commend her highly enough for looking after us during our meal here. The food was also excellent.

Just adding this review (as I can't leave a separate one) to acknowledge the amazing service when my parents celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary by taking their grandson to lunch at this restaurant yesterday. They were wonderfully looked after and thoroughly enjoyed their lunch. My son said his steak was wonderful and my father loved the sticky toffee pudding. An excellent choice for lunch in Cambridge - our starters of haggis and beef cheek were delicious and prettily presented, and we all enjoyed our generous and tasty butler steaks. Sadly no room for pudding but the looked very good too. Good service and a special thank you to whoever took note of the request in the booking form :-)

The food isn't bad (slightly overpriced), but for both of the courses I ordered I did not get what I ordered. Ambient is very nice, though.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Chop House in Cambridge, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. Update: now a vegetarian, I wasn't expecting to find much here. They have some options but as expected this wouldn't be a place to visit for vegetarian food. The booking was for mother's day and I was happy to try their non-meat options. The staff were lovely. It's the little touches like given a flower when greeted. The waiters and waitresses were attentive but not overbearing. Toilets for the most part we're fairly clean (I must have visited a cubicle after a child) but I've been before and they're fine. For Sunday lunch, I had the vegetarian option, a cauliflower steak, but it didn't look like one I've had before. It was a chunk of cauliflower, but I find it hard to believe it was worth £17.50. The potatoes were stale compared to the meat eaters (probably cooked in a different oil, partner tasted and confirmed it was different). Yorkshire pudding, might have just been coincidence, also burnt around the edges, dry on the inside. Vegetables (greens, carrots, parsnips) were lovely, gravy was okay. Overall the food was nice and I'd probably try something else if we were to go again. I didn't complain mainly because we had a lovely time, they treated us well, and I could not have expected more from a place that serves predominantly meat. I'm glad they were able to seat us on Mother's Day and all the meat eaters enjoyed their meals. Note for accessibility (if this helps): There is a step leading up to the entrance. We were seated downstairs. I would recommend letting the staff know when booking if you're requesting a seat on the ground floor as seating there is quite limited. The ladies toilets were downstairs right at the end of the seating area, there are a few steps on the lower level to get there. I didn't see a bathroom on the ground floor so apologies if I missed that. Original review: Really nice food, a starter platter to share, probably quite a lot for two people but there was a variety of things which was ideal as we weren't sure what to expect. The main courses were quite heavy in top of the sharing platter we had to start with. Quite pricey (even for Cambridge) but good quality food. Staff were friendly and had good knowledge about the food being served.

Amazing. Dined in the cellar/crypt, served Badger's Nadgers by a wonderful lady who kept us entertained all evening, ate some amazing, well cooked steak. What a night. There were six of us and we would all highly recommend to any fans of red meat or just having a good time.

Delicious modern British food and the best place for steak in Cambridge. The service is always exceptional and I love the atmosphere downstairs, especially in the side room with vaulted ceilings. A little on the pricy side of course but definitely worth it. Portions are big and there are some cheaper dishes available too. Haven't tried the Sunday roast yet but looking forward to it!

Don’t come here the food is horrible! The mashed potatoes tasted like it was cooked from the day before, the pork had like those spines as you can see in the picture….its one of those place where you don’t eat the true traditional dishes!!! A place made just for tourists to be fooled

Book a table and go. Jose was both knowledgeable about all the dishes and attentive though all staff were pleasant. If I lived closer I'd visit regularly to eat my way through the menu

Fillet was cooked to perfection, Sticky Toffee Pudding was delicious. Highly recommend for a good meal out and excellent service.

I suspose i should have known by the prices that this place would be a theatre resturant. Although the food tasted exellent there wasnt much of it..it did look good arranged in a small area in the middle of the plate. I'm not a cheap skate as i earn plenty as a solicitor....but had to stop off at macdonalds on way home to bury st edmunds for a big mac meal to fill myself up.,This reminded me of my younger days when me and my girlfriend..now my wife used to use the drivethru...it wasnt a bad experience...great petting in the car waiting for the order..lol. Im not putting this place down but if you have a large appitite then better eat something before or after your meal here.

We have been there several times and we went there for Valentine's day today. As always everything was amazing, the food was outstanding and the service even more so. We were served by very nice Portuguese-speaking waiter and waitress, who were extremely helpful and promptly resolved the slight starter mix-up. It was truly a pleasure, this is definitely a place to keep coming back to for our special occasions.

What can I say what a wonderful restaurant I had the Steak pie and roasted root vegetables it was sublime. Big thanks to Marcia the waitress and all the staff for making us feel so welcome!

Called in for Sunday lunch. Ordered the beef which was fine, however the roast potatoes were previously cooked either in the morning or another day and had been warmed up. They were quite hard on the outside and virtually dry in the middle, not the nicest of tastes, so didn’t eat them all. Also I do like my vegetables al dente but the carrots were undercooked and even though I had a steak knife they were very hard to cut! Wouldn’t go back for Sunday lunch as we’ve enjoyed nicer lunches in other places in Cambridge.

It's right in the middle of tourist central but it's neither a rip off nor terribly cutting corners. We had a good meal with good service and nice drinks.

First visit to The Chop House and it will definitely not be our last. Upon arrival we were shown to our table by our waiter who was attentive yet unobtrusive through the evening. I would highly recommend the Black Angus 180’day grain fed T Bone steak. It was the BEST steak I have ever eaten. Succulent, tender and full of flavour. Everything was absolutely perfect. My new favourite restaurant in Cambridge.

Quality food and service and great atmosphere

The place looked great, the winter berry cocktail was delicious, but the food was a massive let down for us! We had the cracking pork starter which was impossible to even eat if you didn’t want to break your teeth and the smell was really strong & the prawn cocktail which was okay at best. The mains which were two ribeye steaks would have been really good, if they weren’t served cold. It was just a let down, considering the price

I love the venue, I've eaten here once before and what I appreciate about this Chophouse is the consistent high service as well as the food. The staff are fab, absolutely know their business and they're kind and friendly. Wonderful place, the food is excellent and the professionalism of the team is exceptional.

Booked a table for 2 on Saturday evening. On arriving was informed rather off-handedly that our table wasn't ready. We said we would have a drink and wait but we're told there was no room (there was) and to go to the pub next door for a drink and come back. I also mentioned I had specifically booked a table upstairs. I was then told, rudely, that that wouldn't be possible. Absolutely disgraceful! We left and ate elsewhere. I went back later to complain to the manager. He said the man we had seen had gone and he would speak to him the next day and then contact me with an explanation. Guess what - haven't heard a thing... they may cook a good steak but why a restaurant would want a reputation for employing rude, arrogant staff is beyond me....

Lovely restaurant immediately opposite Kings College. The atmosphere is cosy and relaxed with hearty food. The burgers here are outstanding. One of our guest’s meat dishes wasn’t great (tough) but the staff were very responsive and replaced it as quickly as they could. Impressive. I can highly recommend the chocolate tart dessert which came with an incredible tangy berry compote - perfect!

This place is more hype than substance. The steak was too hard and the waitress grumpy.

Loved this place. Had a beautifully cooked fillet steak. Mash and mushroom sauce also lovely. Whole table really enjoyed their meals. Got the sharing platter to start, some interesting takes on classic British food such as haggis fritters! Staff were very friendly and attentive. Would recommend booking in advance and getting a table upstairs. Sticker toffee pudding perhaps a tad too sweet

It was a cold windy day out, and we were snug inside enjoying a celebratory lunch. From the second we stepped in we had a great time. Warm, hospitable, lovely atmosphere, delicious menu, and floor to ceiling windows with views onto beautiful architecture and big sky. A big thank you for making our time there memorable. What a gem of a place! The service was amazing, really attentive staff, food was mouthwatering, great representation and just cooked perfectly! The whole place was decorated for Xmas and it really made the atmosphere. I can’t wait to be back and try more dishes!

Very good food, a little pricey.

I have to say I was disappointed. I wanted to come to this place since the first day I arrived at Cambridge. However the quality and service didn’t meet my expectation. The appetiser were good, but the porterhouse we ordered was burnt. So I asked for solution when my server came to ask, and the manager told us there is no way to get this fixed cuz the fillet part supposed to be thinner. So a chophouse can’t serve proper classic steak? Eventually we were convinced to change our order to a regular fillet, it was fine. The venison was also over cooked, the meat was dry and hard. The overall experience made me dissatisfied, the quality of steak is under expectation.

Very good restaurant situated in a beautiful part of Cambridge. We shared a big piece of meat (kind of tomahawk, I can't remember the name) with chips. The meat was very tasty and the chips were crispy and not oily. The atmosphere is warm and you can enjoy a nice view on a beautiful street while you're eating. They also have a good wine selection. The service was excellent. I definitely recommend.

We had a brilliant dinner here the other night - they were able to accomodate our large party last minute and it seemed to pose them no issue - all the food came out at once, it was very well handled. The service was excellent, the food delicious, the place clean; it feels like you're being treated to a special meal despite the reasonable prices. Will definitely be back again!

Venue and servers very good. Food was a big let down - do not order the burger as it tastes like a frozen patty and a stale bun with average topics (save the bacon which was good). Trout was also ordered which was of good quality and no complaints with that dish. Out of our group we left the burgers they were that bad. Very nice staff and hospitable, so top marks there just kitchen let them down.

We made a reservation for Sunday at 12.30 lunch time to try their roast dinner. We arrived ahead of schedule, around 12.10. Despite this, the host was very welcoming and quickly showed us to our table. Once seated, we ordered two soft drinks (rhubarb lemonade and a ginger beer) and two roast dinners - pork belly and chicken. The drinks were brought first and then after another 5 minutes, the roasts came. Once we started eating, my partner told me that her chicken was very dry, and she asked the waiter to bring some extra gravy. My dish had a bit too much fat for my liking, although the taste was ok. I ate everything apart from the extra fat, as the picture shows. We did not receive a check-back whilst eating. However when we were getting ready to pay for the bill, we gave our feedback to the host. At this point, Vito - our host, was very professional and offered his apologies for the weak points of the dishes and from the original bill he deducted the chicken roast. We were very pleasantly surprised by this and whenever we'll be back around the area, we'll try one of their other dishes. I had originally planned to give 3 ⭐, however Vito has gone above and beyond, so just for him I'll give 4 ⭐

I need to give it another try. Menu a little limiting but if you are a big meat eater then this is the place for you.

We went there for Sunday roast and both beef roast and pork roast were really nice. Also tried haggis bites with beetroot mayo and that was tasty too. Service was a bit slow though.

Visited last Friday in the evening; overall excellent food and great service. Huge shoutout to Alexa for looking after us! We had the Dedham Vale Tomahawk and it was wonderful, the fat basically melted in my mouth, totally worth the price. Drinks also great. If I had to nitpick a bit I’d point out that the staff didn’t smile much and that the gent who welcomed us in remarked about us being late, which I felt was a little unnecessary (we phoned to say we’d be about 15 minutes late and it was vague as to whether they needed the table back). Thanks so much guys!

Das Ambiente ist schön jedoch oben ein wenig kalt aber geht gut. Der Service war schnell und sehr angenehm. Wir hatten die Ente sowie den Burger. Die Ente war OK, leider war das Mouse kalt und die Ente auch nur knapp 40°C. Der Burger war total durch gebraten und wir wurden nicht gefragt wie das Fleisch sein soll. Der Geschmack des Burger patty war sehr gut aber halt tot gebraten. Wir würden für die hohen Preise nicht mehr hier her kommen und finden andere Restaurants besser.

Unfortunately, my party and I were not even given the opportunity to dine in this establishment. After politely asking for a menu, the waiter pointed to the menu board outside in the down pour of rain. He then reluctantly handed over a menu after seeing my shocked face of disgust. My party proceeded to enter into the restaurant as the menu was handed to me. The waiter then asked if we had a reservation? After I said 'no' he then replied and said 'there is no availablilty'. This stunned me as there was only one table of this two storey restaurant dining. After I said 'thank you' and left peacefully, I decided to call the restaurant to ask for a table. The lady on the phone was very polite and confirmed there was availability. Clearly, our faces did not fit this restaurant. So please be aware, if you are a party of four, middle Eastern men, made up of 3 doctors and an equity partner for a reputable law firm, then you may struggle to eat here. Such ashame in 2023 that there is clear discrimination in a multi cultural city of a world renowned university! 21/10/2023 at 15:55

This place is a little pricey, but it is worth it. I have been in England for over 3 years and have eaten in all corners of the country. The Chophouse burger with fries was easily the best meal I have eaten throughout my time here. I also had an espresso martini and a lemon & mint martini, both of which were BEAUTIFULLY crafted. The staff who were on shift were also lovely! They had a blast interacting with. The young one in our company, and were charismatic and friendly. It is a shame I only discovered this restaurant right as I am move out of the country!

Disappointing. Everything was good except the main event...the meat! Good fries, nicely cooked veg (spinach less so than broc), excellent starters, but the pork was either precooked and then reheated, or just stupidly overcooked - was chewing and dried out like shoe leather. another in the party was equally unimpressed by the meat. great atmosphere, perfectly good service. Wont go back if you cant get your main reason for existing right.

Was lucky to get a table on a Sunday lunchtime due to a no-show and had a great lunch. Good food, good service and a lovely space. Would recommend to anyone.

[3 Oct 2023] 20-25 odd pound set menu, quite worth it tomato soup - 7/10. ok soup but great sourdough. butler steak - 8/10, pretty damn good. had the garlic butter and red wine sauce, try peppercorn next time. fantastic chips as well.

Great food, the pork crackling taster was particularly special. Lots more space than you might think downstairs and friendly and efficient service.

Great place. We were down in the bowels of the building which was interesting but too hot in the end: needed some ventilation. The food was nice and service fine too. I would definitely go back if I wanted a meat based meal.

Great food (Sunday roast - absolutely marvellous), good selection of wine and the most fabulous service from lovely Hungarian waitress which made the whole experience delightful. What a gem she is. A lively atmosphere and three courses with wine for under £100 for the two of us. We’ll definitely be back, and we’ll bring the family next time.

Really great steak experience! food was really delicious and the drinks were nice too. Service was kind and very nice! Just one little thing: the plates weren't warmed, so the steaks can get could in no time. Beside that: Recommendation!
