The Bull And Dog in St. Helens

Waiter come over took our order partner asked 'can you get chicken burger with the free pint included' waiter informed yes you can.. when the food arrive he had a beef burger with the pint, my partner will not eat a beef burger. I told what I thought was the manager which was intact the land lady to be told 'we can swap it but he will have to pay for the beef burger aswell as a chicken' why when he ordered a chicken? This land lady called her own worker 'Slow' meaning doesn't know how to do his job basically.. We told the land lady to leave it as he wasn't paying extra when they're the ones who got it wrong.. my partner had half of my food so I still fell hungry.. onion rings was undercooked also. Also when it came to paying for the food she was stood in the back with the lad who took our order clearly slating us off giving bad looks.

Samantha, wonderful member of staff, always works hard. Ps drinks alright always someone to talk too, quite relaxed environment.

Ordered the curry , complained to waitress telling her the chicken was tough ,spoiled the meal . She said the chicken is cooked the day before , was shocked to here this. It's put me off ordering the curry again now. Even the chef should know that chicken should be cooked on the day !

Lovely food, tip top service from waiter! So welcoming the staff worked so hard for my family on Sunday we were placed in the VIP room for Sunday lunch! The waiter couldn’t do enough for us! We will be returning very soon

Came here for lunch with work colleagues. Food was disappointing. Had butternut squash wellington which had no taste and was very bland. The cheesecake for dessert was also lacking in flavour. Starter was small and nothing special. One of the most disappointing meals I’ve had in a long time so won’t return.

I was in on Saturday in the bar being served by the lovely lad behind the bar who is so witty! Me and my friends were honestly in hysterics with him! For me and my friends the bull and dog is the place to be! Live Sport, Amazing Dj and also the best burgers in town! It’s a little gem that Iv been coming to for years with my friends and family and cannot fault any of the staff

Great location, when I have had food previously it’s always been spot on, waiters / waitresses never had an issue. The biggest flaw in the bull and dog is the landlady. Looks like she’s chewing a wasp. Serves like she’s chewing a nest of wasps. Ordered a drink at the bar, served by landlady and no please, no thanks no eye contact just absolute rudeness ! Will I drink here again ? Yes, it’s very local ! Does the landlady deserve my money? Hell no ! Would I drink here more often if the land lady was even a jot more hospitable? Prob most evenings for a couple of pints ! Overall, it’s a decent pub. More than decent food, decent pint. Spoiled by service !!!! I’m a polite guy, I’d go out of my way to avoid confrontation, one day I may bite back, but one day I hope to be barred just so I don’t spend anymore of my hard earned money in this landlady’s pub

This pub is outstanding best service and the food i visted the pub with my wife i had the burger it was the best burger in my life and my wife had the sweet-chilli chicken which she said she had loved our first time visiting and we are planning on coming back definitely worth a visit x

Flat lemonade, dry burger. The menus limited and the tables full of cheap packet sauces won’t be coming again good bye..

The food here is absolutely amazing! Everything tastes so fresh! We had the fish fryday deal! The fish is actually better than the chippy! Service and atmosphere was brilliant too! We will be returning keep it up!

Went today for a Sunday roast and was sceptical after reading some of the reviews on here but I needn't have been. The food was amazing so tasty and so much. We left feeling very full. The waffles for dessert looked amazing but I was too full to even attempt one. Will definitely be back.

Always lovely. Always homemade. Proper pub lunch and home made chips. Had the roast here aswell and was really good. Definitely worth the visit

Lovely staff and really nice food at a very reasonable price, we all really enjoyed our meals which were served very quickly.

Steak Pie had very little pastry but plenty of meat which was nice but the other 2 meals were just ok ,The sauce on the NY chicken was more like tomato ketchup

Called in on spec and due to the nice weather we sat outside on one of the many tables available. Table Service was offered and was effortless as was contactless payment. We went for the baguettes with side salad and were not disappointed. All in all a positive all round experience, oh and the beer was good as well!.

Dined here today as a family when they brought the drinks they forgot the wife’s coke. When the mains ( I was second to order) came the other 8 diners got there’s, when my lasagne did not appear the waitress said she would chase it and came back to say it won’t be long to which I asked how long and she said she would find out for me. This never happened and my meal appeared as the others were finishing. The waitress said my meal was not on the order that she had written down at which point I informed her that I no longer required itIn future I suggest that they should read the order back to the diners which would ensure that everyone gets what they order.Very disappointed with the service when celebrating a family member’s birthday

Came on Tuesday for lunch with my wife, it was fantastic, presentation on food was amazing, pub still spotless as usual and very safe for me and my family to come and enjoy it. The manager was on shift on this day and could not do enough for us! So thankful for the return!

Came with my sister and dog, what an amazing little place this is ... fantastic food, brilliant service, just an amazing little pub. 100% coming back. Plus they also have a fab little play area for kids.

We went here on saturday and can I just say the difference is amazing. We ate here couple years back and promised ourselves we wouldnt return. We have been following the pub on facebook and decided to go again as the outdoor park has dragged us back for the kids and the renovation to the garden looked beautiful. Upon arrival we met the new owner he was lovely very welcoming sat us down and he recommended some dishes of the menu. The food was excellent, the taste and presentation. It was very busy due to the weather and volume the beer garden holds but the service was good everyone working hard, and can I just thank the lovely lady who served us as she she did not stop all day and her presence was lovely and welcoming at all times. We Would definatly recommend and definatly be returning. The food is worth the wait. The staff all seem lovely, the food and my pornstar martini was lovely. Well done to the new owners for making the garden such a lovely place to sit and we can't wait for our next visit very soon.

Another amazing Sunday lunch at the bull an dog the dinners seem to get better every time we go.the mixed meat dinner was the best ever the meat is so tender just melts in ur mouth complements to the chefs.the staff are fantastic can't do enough for you especially in these hards times well done x

Just moved to Sutton Heath on Friday from Liverpool and found the Bull and Dog on my travels .. what a find.. spoke to the same lady over the phone twice .. sorry forgot your name .. very helpful and friendly .. picked up a menu earlier today Sunday 27th September and collected my order about 4.30 pm .. well impressed .. roast lamb Sunday lunch .. no complaints whatsoever. I’ve previously been here and it was excellent - this is my first post covid visit there is NO screening or signing in required and there has been a child coughing for the full hour we have been here. The food was mediocre at best quite tasteless the couple on the next table only got half their order and waited 30 mins for the rest. Need to improve the social hygiene practice majorly

Came on Saturday, just before the entertainment. With my partner and twin girls. It was the most calmest meal I've had in a while. No rushing no mithering! The waitress was lovely. She got everything we needed and was so polite! And understanding when it comes to having kiddies at the table. Felt like it was our local! The food was delicious steak for me, and ribs for the other half! Kids portions are good too! Canny wait to be back again very soon.

Ok so I've reviewed this pub previously and to say the least not impressed. HANG ON HILD THE PRESS. Well attended for my my mums birthday today and decided to give it a go again. Well, well, well whats happened, the food was good, actually very good. I know I had a reply from the owner on my last review but I hope you took note and made the changes. We all had something different including my wife who is vegetarian. Ok the staff couldn't be more helpful. I didn't expect less to be honest this is a local i always use. The food arrived with a reasonable time and was lovely and hot. The food was tasty and enough for all of us. Now so why not 5, right await reply from owner. Vegetables were limited and maybe some butter carrots and a little colour on the plate. Yes I love cauliflower and broccoli but it looked presentation wise a little dull. Let's get to 5 i am coming back next week with my parents as they enjoyed it and so did i. 5 star review hopefully on the way.

A nice warm welcome back, brand new And fresh seatings in restaurant area, walls have been modernised, looks sparkling clean and smells amazing! 1m stickers and posters are in place to keep us all safe and hand sanitizer stations are available across the pub. Waitress had taken me and my family to a clean table and ordered the most amazing Sunday lunches that seem to get nicer every time! Superb service, Tasty Food and Clean! Thank you to the Bull and Dog owners and Staff for making me and my family feel safe!

Went in Saturday afternoon food was amazing as always.great to sit down as we been having takeaway Sunday lunches through lock down. Inside the pub looks fabulous modern fresh and clean.they have a one way system all the guidelines are in place and we'll managed.well done Sarah an Mike x

Being a regular customer for food I realised that the bull and dog were doing takeaways during this time! I ordered over the phone for a Lamb Dinner, it was absolutely delicious as usual! When I picked up my meal you were instantly welcomed in by the nice clean smell in the pub! Could tell that they had kept on top of the cleaning while it had been closed! Compliments to the Chef at the bull and dog!

Just had 2 lamb roast dinners . everything is homemade the meat just melts in ur mouth the roasties are the best I've ever had the gravy Is amazing u must try.thank you bull an dog during these hard times keep up the fab work

Had a Sunday dinner from the bull & dog today, food was absolutely delicious! Everything was red hot and cooked to perfection! Meat was lovely and juicy and cooked perfectly! We went in to the restaurant and it was empty .my friend ordered fish chips mushy peas I ordered chicken chips our chips were suppose to be home made but looked like frozen they were rock hard inedible my friend complained and we got 2 pound each back and a free drink certainly won't be going there again

I love this place. We have been a few times on a Sunday and it has been a really pleasant experience. The food is lovely, all homecooked. The staff are amazing nothibg us too much trouble. we took our grandsons today and they were brilliant with them. They really do cater for children. Thanks we will certainly be coming again.

Wow.... Took my 82 year old mum for her Sunday dinner, this lady can cook and can be very critical of restaurants! Lol she was more than impressed, stated the lamb was beautiful, I had the steak that was to die for! Prices are more than reasonable, fab atmosphere, staff can't do enough for you, work really hard, and made to feel welcome! Thats my sunday ruined ( usually out with the girlfriends) mum wants to dine out in the bull & dog every Sunday! ;( lol xx

Definitely gone downhill since Dave & Joanne left. I know the chef is the same, but the portions have definitely gotten smaller and what was delicious one week, tastes completely different the next. The landlady serving food in her denim jacket is off putting and they certainly need more staff behind the bar - Saturday tea time when football is on and only 2 people behind the bar. The menu has supposedly changed but only to decrease the options - a sandwich menu would be very much welcomed!

Make sure you are ready to munch, the food was lovely and very well presented. The staff were attentive and friendly Only had 2 drinks couldn't manage another. Thanks again Joe and enid

Christmas dinner was brilliant the atmosphere was great everyone was friendly the only thing was a customer came in asking us to leave cos they was supposed to be in the room I found out later he was booked in a hour after we gone the only thing that spoilt it good work to everyone

We had the Christmas menu, the food was wonderful just like a proper home cooked Christmas dinner . The service was outstanding our main waitress was Sian and she couldn’t do enough to help. Fantastic service. After we’d eaten, a singer was on and he was fabulous too. Great night .

Visited a few times over the last few weeks after hearing it’s under new management. You can’t half tell. (It’s a lot cleaner) New &Friendly; staff. Dogs welcome and the food was second to none! The Sunday lunch is 11/10.... highly recommended! Well done Mike and Sara keep up all the hard work!

I went in the other day after hearing a new couple had taken over. Noticed the pub was significantly cleaner, can smell the difference as soon as you walk in! Lovely couple and friendly staff! Food remains remarkable as always!

Visited an hour ago to be told we couldn't take the dog in the pub as bar is being painted. So we left.

Visited with friends. I had driven past many times but never went in. Today went in with friends. Although it looks tired it has a great vibe. The food is very good indeed. The curry was lovely. The chips were home made which is rare these days. I noticed they often show sport on the tv. Tonight it was the football. Portions very large indeed. I noticed they sold a good selection of gins behind the bar.

my friend and I visited today, 9.7.19 at 5.30pm. we were told the nearby wheatsheaf pub was very good for meals, so we first went there, we couldn't wait to get out!! smell was awful. I suggested the bull and dog, we were greeted by a lovely young girl who seated us and went out of her way with the service. excellent fish and chips and the gammon was delicious. as was the free {tues a starter or sweet is free} apple pie and custard and ice cream sundae. will be back very soon with my hubby. well done and thank you, kath o'neill.

Visited today with family after a recommendation from a neighbour. Got told about the sunday dinners. So thats what we went for. First and foremost the servers were lovely. Helpful and informative.

We've been to the Bull & Dog a few times recently for Sunday Lunch, you can also choose from the extended menu.

We've been having a kitchen refurb so we have been coming here every sunday for our roast dinner fix. The small sunday roast is usually enough for us because we have to leave space for the Nutella waffles. Well priced and a really decent amount of meat. We went for fathers day, they had ran out of horseradish which was disappointing to have my beef without and they had forgot the roast potatoes but when I asked the waitress, she brought over a big bowl and apologised :)

Lovely food been here a few times recently. The pub is just a local and could do with a tidy up but the food is Lovely and the chips are fantastic. We have been and had a roast too it was great. The only thing I’d suggest is that you have the lunch menu on a Saturday as-well as in the week sometimes you don’t want a big meal at lunch time. However all the food we have had has been lovely and a nice little play areas for the kids.

The food was awful, not up to its usual standard of typical pub lunch. It's steadily been "going downhill" for the past couple of months. Won't be going again. We have returned to give this pub the chance to improve. Shame really. It used to be a lovely pub

Some nice meals here. But been disappointed a few times. Meals are expensive here for the amount you get. The chips are very nice but you are not given many. Salad amount is very poor. Burger buns must be the cheapest buns they order, the buns just fall apart as your trying to eat a burger and not a nice tasting bun.. Baked potato was cold had to send it back,must of been cooked hours before then warmed up slightly. A combo for 2 people should be 4 of everything and not 3 of everything ( which should be equally shared between 2 ). Pots of tea not very hot at all Good little play area for kids.

First class service and food. At least 20 of us were served quickly and food was great. Waitresses efficient and explained that food would served table to table to lessen risk of delay, would recommend eating here.

Met with three friends for lunch. The food is really good. We had a range from main meals to wraps. I had Brie and bacon jacket potato which was excellent. All very fresh and well presented. Added to this...excellent friendly service. Definitely returning to The Bull and Dog.

I’m in bull and dog every weekend I can totally recommend the curry and an superb Sunday lunch. Staff are always excellent can’t do enough for you. And always a lovely pint of John smiths wash it down lovely Jubbly .

Really not happy the bull & Dog St. Helens comes across as a family pub with a kids play area outside, after spending over £200 on food & drink, at 9pm we were told by the landlady that we needed to remove my kids out of the pub, so we told kids to play in play area outside until train arrived 30 mins later when the landlady appeared to tell us that we need to remove my kids off site because they’ve had complaints that kids are to load in play area outside, I have two well behaved kids, I’m very disappointed for the way weave been treated, will not be going there again

We went to the Bull and dog for food on our way into Manchester as it is ideally located at the side of Lea Green railway station. The pub was busy however we were attended almost immediately by a very pleasant young waitress who took our order.

Came here a couple of days ago as had an hour wait for a train at the station just opposite.

We went as a family of six on a Friday evening for a meal with a pre booked menu (3 courses for £23.95). We waited a while for the starter & main, however I think it was the landlady came over & explained that they were very busy & we were next to be served so that was fair enough. No complaints about the starters and five out of a party of six had turkey dinner as a main which were fine; nothing spectacular but nothing to complain about either. My dad had the lamb for his main & when asked by the waitress if everything was ok with the meals, he explained that the meat on his meal was very fatty to which she smirked, giggled & continued to collect plates. I think she was just nervous & only young so my dad then also informed the older lady that had apologised for our wait earlier who shrugged her shoulders & replied “that’s the cut of meat”. She was so rude, the meat was inedible & left on the plate in front of her with the lumps of white fat visible. I will never return to this pub to eat or drink specifically because of her attitude. He spent a lot of money taking our family out for a meal together & it really put a downer on the evening.

Visited for tea the other night , i had the Bacon + Cheese burger with hand cut chips , one of the best burgers i have in a long long time , not cremated like most places , the Chips were to die for , thick and cooked perfectly . The wife had Turkey Burger with Sweet potato chips , she was well pleased. Service good although it was quiet , very attentive young waitress.Have booked for the xmas menu with friends , if as good as our last visit was , we will be happy bunnies.

Tonight, we sat outside near the children’s playground so my son could watch the trains and play on the swing (which he loves to do!) we ordered drinks & food. service was fast and friendly (even though the bar was chokka with old men just sat/stood having their drinks at the bar)

After a disastrous start to a weekend away, a cancelled flight to Amsterdam and then a cancelled train to York, we asked the landlady of this lovely pub could we wait inside out of the rain. What a marvelous host. She was in no way expecting 20 people from the station to descend on her but she served us with smile and made us feel very welcome. Thank You!

Visited for a meal to celebrate a birthday. Service was friendly and efficient. Drinks are sensibly priced. My wife wasn’t happy with her meal but she was immediately offered a replacement or a different meal altogether. She chose a different meal and was very happy with it so no complaints from us. They also have sports on TV if that’s your thing

My Fiancé and I visited here on whim after viewing some houses locally and we were waiting for our train at Lea Green - which is next door.

Been here several times this year & have found the food to be very good at every visit. Wide menu & have tried several different meals. All have been of great quality & value. Specials board changes often. Would recommend this place and we will be back on a regular basis

We decided to take a drive out and find somewhere different for food and spotted this place and thought why not? As the title suggests it was one of the best spur of the moment decisions we've made. Full waitress service, by a really pleasant young lady, was provided as soon as we walked in. The have different offers every night and on Tuesday it was get a free starter with anything off the grill or fish menu. We both opted for the 10oz Gannon and prawn cocktail starter. The starter was presented on a slate and was absolutely delicious then the main meal came out and wow how fabulous did that look and taste? There were hand cut chunky chips which were almost roast potatoes ( cooked to perfection), whole mushrooms, tomato, hand made onion rings and the perfectly cooked very keen gammon steak was topped with a pineapple ring and an egg (50p extra). The whole meal including drinks for the 2 of us was just £28. The desserts sounded amazing but we just didn't have room to try them.....maybe next time as there will definitely be a next time.

Food is lovely and the staff are really friendly. You won't be disappointed, there is ample parking spaces and a little kiddies play area. They have all types of sports on and good selections of real ales.
