In the midst of all this doom and gloom, my wife and I enjoyed a special anniversary meal at the Bucks Head just days before the latest shutdown of hospitality here. Another memorable, mouth watering meal in one of our favourite restaurants with the best of fine food and wine served in relaxed and comfortable surroundings.A wide ranging three course a la carte menu for just over £30 is exceptional value and we could not have been happier with our various choices, including the cheese and onion tartlet for starters, the melt in the mouth main of delicious Dromara beef followed by a chocolate and cherry fondant to die for - all washed down with a wonderful Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Thanks to Alan and Leiontia for their warm welcome and hospitality .... can't wait for our next visit!

Fabulous meal in one of our favourite restaurants. The Bucks Head in Dundrum always delivers. We’ve eaten here many times and never been disappointed tonight was no exception. After a drink in the sunny courtyard garden at the rear of the pub we enjoyed Oysters and seafood in the cosy restaurant. The meal was superb and we would highly recommend it on a trip to the Mournes

Both times food and service were excellent, 1st time was with my wife and three of the family, 2 of whom are Vegans and the Staff were very accommodating. We shared Breads and Oils and I enjoyed the Rib of Beef, would definitely recommend it. 2and time, just my wife and myself, this time it was the Garlic cheesy Doda Bread and the Chicken Pasta, again both enjoyable and the portions were just right for me. My wife had the Dromara Beef and champ, with hindsight, she wishes she had not ordered a dessert . Will definitely be back next time.

We had a brilliant Sunday lunch out at the Buck's Head in early Sept. Our first since lockdown and not eating out since mid March. And it really was a treat with a very professional team as regrads service. Food excellent value for three courses at £24.50. Tables very well spaced out and staff very visible keeping tables etc clean. All very civilised. No one hanging around the bar area and very much aimed at those coming in for a proper meal

We had a good friend visiting and thought it would be nice to take her out for dinner at the Buck's Head for her birthday .... Mistake! Bottom line, only 5 out of 7 starters came out and when we asked about the other 2 the waitress was so rude, she accused us of being wrong, she rolled her eyes and just walked away! Customer service at it's worst! Can't beleive she is allowed front of house!!! I have never seen anything like it! I was so upset I had to leave. I also couldn't beleive they weren't wearing face masks as all other eateries we have been to are wearing them. WILL NEVER RETURN!

Booked for a special birthday occasion. Nice person took the booking (though she threw in the odd swear word throughout the conversation) she suggested a ‘birthday plate’ would be brought out at the dessert. She took note.Arrived, nice welcome, but that’s a good as it gets. Staff were friendly but random in who looked after the table. Very, very slow service and delays in all the mains coming out. Some had clearly been sitting prepped for a while. No children’s meal options. Basic pasta options for them given when pushed. Food that was once the envy of other restaurants, was something that a local pub would serve better. Dessert sponge was hard in the middle, sorbet was just served as 3 scoops - plate wasn’t dressed - the presentation wasn’t there- the least you would expect for the price. No birthday plate ever came. Very overpriced for what it was in terms of the quality of what we got. It will be a long time before I consider it again, especially for what was to be a special meal out.

Dropped in on Sunday afternoon after a long coastal walk and were delighted they were able to give us a table in the bar. We had fish and chips in mind and, despite not being an option on the lunch menu, the chef kindly accommodated. Good beer selection - good Guinness. Lovely decor and artwork in restaurant/bar. Excellent fish, chips, tartare sauce, peas - delicious light batter, meaty cod and super chunky chips. Delicious desserts. Creme brûlée amazing. Only thing I would say is crumble on apple and pear crumble a bit too hard and chunky - you could lose a filling! And more creme anglais needed! Extra bonus points for Fairtrade earl grey tea! Please can the ladies toilets be given a good clean! The dust on the cubicles is noticeable! And the cobwebbed skylight! And the watered down hand wash! It’s a shame to have the loos let down an otherwise smashing restaurant!Compliments to the excellent chef!

We were on holiday in Dundrum and visited on a personal recommendation. On a cold November evening, the pub felt warm and inviting. Where do I start? We booked a table for two on a Tuesday evening, the place was busy even early in the week so booking is recommended. The food was amazing. I had duck which was cooked to perfection. My partner had braised beef which was delicious. Unfortunately we were too full for dessert but the little pieces of fudge which were served with tea at the end of the meal were divine. They do a set price 2 or 3 courses which was great value considering the high quality of the ingredients and cooking. Wine list was good. I've nothing to fault about this place, other than it's not local to me! When we are back in northern Ireland we will definitely be returning! The only thing on the service front was that the Male waiter seemed a little heavy handed and put my plate down in front of me in such a way dinner nearly ended up in my lap. Female staff very attentive however. Highly recommended restaurant which will go down as one of the best meals I've ever had.

Went on Saturday night with my husband & surprisingly it wasn’t busy. We were greeted & shown to our table by a very nice young dark haired girl who also took our drinks order. There was a different story however with the older blonde haired woman we found her rather sharp & rude on several occasions throughout our meal. Starters were pate which was good but the seafood chowder was disappointing, plenty of fish but no real flavour & the breads we got as a wee appetiser before were ok but a few of them were almost a bit stale. Mains were lovely duck was cooked well & my slow cooked beef with red wine jus was lovely however when it came to the bill I got charged extra £3.50 for a small portion of chips even though I had asked for them instead of everything else it was supposed to come with! Not good & we tried for 10 minutes to get attention from any of the waitresses to suggest it should be removed but in the end gave up! We won’t be in a rush back, service means a lot when your paying that bit more!

The chowder was good, as was the mussels and Brie. Two fishes for mains, a steak and a slow cook beef were perfect! Unfortunately the chips had been refried, we understand that this is common now but normally at the same time, they must have been left over night because you can taste when potatoes are reheated after time and this just took the shine off what was a lovely meal. We enjoyed a delicious meal here last week. So much so, we booked again for the last night of our holiday. What a disappointment second time around. My sis and I ordered a gluten-free version of crispy cod with minted peas and chips. Got oven-baked cod, mange tout and other greens, plus mash. It was flavourless, unseasoned, and bland. It felt like no effort had been made whatsoever. Very disappointing indeed. On the bill, we were then charged for a beer we'd already paid for, and a salad we never received. After I said I hadn't enjoyed my food, it felt like the staff avoided us, when the service before had been warm and friendly. I see this restaurant has amazing reviews, including from Michelin. This was a Sunday night. It felt like tonight was perhaps a different chef from last Wednesday, when the food had been so flavoursome. So, which do I trust? My meal full of delight last Wednesday, or my meal full of disappointment tonight?

Nice decor/ furnishings, the music created a nice ambience and there was a clean smell as we passed by the bar into the dining area. The main waitress seemed agitated, there was a lack of warmth in her service and this left me feeling as though we were an inconvenience. I had asked to see the vegan menu as I was thoroughly interested to see what was on offer. Northern Ireland restaurants aren't well known for their vegan friendly approach to menu options. However I love tapenade and ordered the bread selection. The breads lacked freshness and were all bland but one, the wheaten bread was especially tasty - congratulations. My friend ordered a cup of potato and leek soup, not the type of soup Northern Irish restaurants should be getting wrong, but wrong is the only word to describe the dish water consistency of this cup-a-soup with lots of pepper. My friend was home from LA,while home he takes the opportunity to order fish'n'chips wherever we go. Mushy peas should be as the name dictates, mushy, not dried up and crumbly again another very basic food that Northern Irish restaurants really shouldn't be getting wrong. My friend who is old-school and politely eats everything that is placed in front of him kept saying "at least the fish is good" my reply having grown up with an uncle from Annalong who was a fisherman "it should be good Kilkeel's only 20 minutes up the road!". For anyone who doesn't know you would really worry if this part of Northern Ireland wasn't serving good quality fish, it's basically on the waters edge! I ordered the Hake special, the fish was the only redeeming factor to the dish, the butter beans were dry, there were miniscule potato cubes the size of babies finger nails dotted around the plate which did nothing for the presentation. The staff are fortunate that any type of tip was left, as I was not impressed at all. And to add insult to injury it would be no exaggeration to tell you, the waitresses mother had parked behind my car so I couldn't leave, mean while the chef and kitchen staff made a hasty exit from the restaurant. Clearly as the last table in we had kept them from getting on with their afternoon. Having driven from Comber, as far as birthday lunches go it was disastrous. I can not recommend the Buck's Head on Tuesdays and best of luck to all who try it any other day of the week. Having worked in hospitality for ten years or more I understand waiting on the public can be demanding and at times thankless. This hospitality team struck me as tired, they lacked luster which is unfortunate as I know locally this restaurant can be popular. I highly recommend Ballo House.

Go here if you want a very good meal. Staff are pleasant and the food excellent. Not the cheapest in terms of price for food and drinks but nevertheless well worth a visit. Seems wheelchair friendly and accessible to everywhere either in the bar area or the dining room which could be a little draughty in winter.

This place doesn't look like much from the outside but inside it's smart, warm and modern. We had great service and drinks. I had the Salmon which was absolutely fantastic. All of our group enjoyed their food and we had a great time. The food and drink is on the expensive side but it's not super expensive and you definitely get the quality you expect for the price.

Called here yesterday for lunch on way to Newcastle. Food and service were both great. Quality of food was excellent. staff were friendly. However, big surprise on the bill was Prosecco was £10 a glass with no strawberry!! I'd a pint of Magners which was priced as you'd expect.

A romantic meal out with my partner on a wintry night and what a spot it was. The food was simply delicious and the staff were very attentive. The wee free extras are always a hit with me.

Booked here for a Sat night meal. Having never been before I was expecting a better than average bar food. Wrong. It was top notch restaurant standard. Service was super and I could have eaten everything on the menu. Presentation of each dish was excellent and tasted great. the chocolate fondant pudding was one of the best puds I've ever had.

I dined here in the recent past with my mum for lunch. We had been at Murlough beach and often pass this restaurant so decided to try it out. The most notable part of the experience is how cosy and homely the atmosphere is. The Bistro area was recently refurbished and truly has superb character.

Stopped in at the Bucks Head after a long walk along the beach at Murlough on a very cold but dry winters day. I've been popping in here for over the past 15 years when down walking the beach. It's always been a reliable wateringhole with excellent service. On this occasion we were a bit late in - around 2.30 - but were able to get a couple of bowls of soup to warm us up. Chowder for me and broth for my wife. Served with lovely freshly made breads. The soups were very tasty and the bread rolls and wheaten excellent. Service as usual was quick and efficient. It's a great place to stop at if you're in the area - it's a bit far away from us to be a local but always a good reason to go for a bracing walk by the sea!

We went with friends as this place had been recommended. The food was good but not great. We had the crispy chicken and Thai mussels to start and the pork and 24 hour braised beef for mains. I had the beef and it was delicious and only let down by the advertised caramelised shallots consisting of two thin pieces of cooked but far from caramelised pieces of shallot which seems both misleading and mean.Service was OK but a bit slow and a request for more water was apparently forgotten by one of the waitresses. Atmosphere was fairly old fashioned.

Brought out by family to celebrate my 60th birthday.Found the dining area a bit up market canteen like and tables were "rocking" on the floor.Service was fine and all meals came promptly. None of our party had any complaints.Menu was a bit sparse of choice 2 and 3 course option £30 for the later.Several steaks all cooked as ordered. Please try the braised beef which according to my better half was to die for.Wine list ok but as usual a bit expensive.Overall not a bad night and reasonlby priced.

After listening to so many people recommending The Bucks Head we decided to call in on our way home from Newcastle. First impressions were good, the place is clean and the staff were friendly. We scanned the menu and ordered or meals and waited eagerly for them to arrive. The kids scampi arrived with around 4 pieces of scampi on a plate with some chips and the other kids meal was supposed to be penne pasta with cheese, but a bowl with under cooked pasta sitting in some oily substance arrived. My partners sea food chowder arrived (apparently they are famous for this offering) and I can only describe the grey coloured liquid with lumps tasted like puréed celery with chives. As for my cheeseburger, I've had better from burger vans parked at the side of the road. One saving grace was when I pointed out the issues to our server my partner was offered an alternative dish and the kids were brought chips. However, my partner ordered a cheeseburger and this came loaded with burnt cheese. There were other diners expressing their concerns with the standards on offer on Sunday evening, with one couple walking out, so we weren't being difficult, there really seems to be a issue that needs attention. To be fair our server adjusted the bill to reflect our situation. It's a shame to have to post such a negative review, especially since the staff were so nice but if experiences like this aren't highlighted then they can't be addressed.

Staff were attentive, polite and efficient...Give it a try...you won't regret it.

For Pub food it doesn't get much better, when we first turned up it looked like it was closed but once you enter it has large lounge dining area and a garden bar. The food was very good across all 7 mains we had with the whole family, well worth the stop off if your traveling in the area.

We have visited this restaurant several times before, the service is always great, the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, diners range from singletons to family parties. We were really looking forward to having the seafood chowder but sadly we were very disappointed. The chowder was very ordinary, they had not used any smoked fish and there wasn't enough fish in the chowder, in fact very little, we were very disappointed. However, the special was a beautiful baked cod with a Parmesan crust served with champ potato and the scampi was delicious. This establishment does punch above it's weight with most dishes, such a shame about the chowder.

This is my local pub, but no longer. They support Fox Hunting. In 2024 who on earth still goes out killing wildlife for fun? I think it’s important people are aware who they give their money to.
