Stayed in the rooms at the back of the pub it was very clean and modern purpose built building with all things needed, towels, mini soaps, kettle, tea coffee cups. Had our evening meal at pub very nice. Lovely place to stay over and explore the area. Breakfast lovely too, ( typical all Full English) pre order what you want night before, there were other choices but not interested in them

My best firend and I decided to have lunch at this pub. We had a couple of drinks and some food. As it was my treat I just paid the bill and left.I was absolutly disgusted when I checked the bill and saw that even though I had purchased a vodka and bottle of orange which was £2.30 I had been charged an additional 60p for a dash of soda. How can this be justified when it is carbonated waterand out of a gun. I know for a fact that this does not cost anything and I have never experienced this in any other pub I have been in over the years

I entered the pub and asked if there was a table outside in the shade, I was told “I dont know have a look”.Great, thanks.I then sat outside for 10 minutes, wasn’t greeted or approached by the “waiter” who passed by twice to clear up the table next to me.Went inside, asked for a beer and some food and I was told that kitchen had closed at 14:00.It was 14:01.I told them that I was sitting outside for 10mins and nobody came, to which the lady answered “we don’t do table service and you didn’t tell us you wanted food”, right after I had seen her go out from the kitchen to serve a table their food.Need to say more?

Have been cycling past this pub during lockdown and watched them getting ready to reopen with a lovely big garden and outside area. Visited for the first time on the Monday evening a week after they reopened with my wife and grown up daughter. Sat inside as it was raining. The food was exactly what I like about a country pub. Good, honest food with freshly cooked vegetables. Good portion size too (important for me!). Will definitely becoming back especially when the weather is dry to sit in their huge garden! The waitress was lovely too, very friendly, helpful and attentive.

Out for Sunday Roast (my personal favourite meal!). First time at this pub and was told that it was warm and cosy, Yes it was downstairs but our pre-booed table was upstairs in a cold room!!! Our aim was to have a traditional Sunday Roast but the only roast available was beef. OK came eventually and I will admit at first glance there seemed to be plenty of thickly cut beef. However it was very rare and unfortunately hubby is not a great beef fan and I think this has turned him off even more!! In addition the vegetables which where on the menu as seasonal veg turned out to be chunks of swede, turnip with an odd smattering of carrot, plus a dull stir fry with shredded bacon. Most bizarre. NOT the traditional roast that we were looking for, so greatly disappointed. On a good note the waiter`was very helpful with all our requirements.

We had a family get-together of 20 people for an early Christmas lunch on the Saturday before. We were given the upstairs room to ourselves as there were a number of small children who could then run around and play without disturbing other guests. everything was beautifully managed: the food was really excellent; staff were sympathetic and accommodating; prices very reasonable indeed. If we ever hold another such joint party the British queen will be first on our list.

We've always known the pub for it's great hospitality and food, and used their B&B facilities before Christmas for the first time, for a couple of elderly relatives who were visiting from overseas. The rooms were lovely, modern and comfortable. They also enjoyed the option of having a lovely pub meal, just a few steps away from their accommodation. The staff as usual were brilliant, and always took time with them, despite it being a busy pub, and I would like to thank them for looking after them so well.

Visited Sunday for Birthday lunch. Hadn't booked but friendly staff found a table downstairs as I have mobility issues but there is an upstairs too. Took a walk around nearby nature reserve before eating which has a private path leading to the pub. Good range of beers and interesting menu if you want something a little different. Husband had the pigeon starter which he enjoyed. I loved the Sea bass main with orange segments and the chocolate bread and butter pudding was amazing. We will probably visit again in the summer as this was a nice alternative to our usual haunts in North Herts. Thank you.

Had a Sunday meal here and although it was decent it could have been better. The staff are good, very friendly, attentitive and interactive. The menu is stacked with the usual pub grub and a traditional Sunday lunch. Mrs W had the lamb, which was a surprise to me! and she didn't really enjoy it, said it could have been cooked a bit longer. I went for the staek and ale pie which was nice but the pastry was a bit thick and the portion a bit small, but I guess for the price was pretty good value. We had deserts, a bit pricey again £5-50 for ice-cream. We enjoyed it mostly but just feel it could offer that little bit more.

The fishcake was huge and amazing couldn't eat it all. Staff were happy to box up what was left fishcake and some veggies. Desert was a trio of ice cream again they split it into 3 different bowls. I popped into the pub on Sunday afternoon for an impromptu drink with my wife. It soon became apparent lots of others had had the same idea and the pub was incredibly busy. Not letting that deter us we headed inside to the bar for some drinks and this is where the problems began. We were completely ignored by bar staff who blatantly served other more familiar customers before us despite us being there first. When we did eventually get served the barmaid was abrupt to the point of rudeness. Nevertheless we enjoyed our drinks in the lovely garden area and thought no more about it. That is until the experience was repeated when I returned to the bar for a refill. I stood there waiting whilst bar staff chatted to 3 other familiar customers and prioritised their service despite me being their first. This happening once can be forgiven as mistakes like this can easily happen at busy times, but for this to happen 2 out of 2 visits to a bar by the same member of staff is poor customer service. My advice to the British Queen would be to sort out your customer service, your facilities are excellent but it’s poor practice when your bar staff prioritise socialising at the bar over serving new customers who are left waiting. Needless to say we won’t be returning.

We stopped here after being turned away from another local pub as we had our dog with us. It was far too cold a day to sit outside. We received a lovely friendly welcome at The British Queen but missed lunch by 5 mins. We couldn't even get a sandwich. This is acceptable as these village establishments have to have their cut off times and book their chefs/cooks for set times. We had a good local beer and a crisp dry white wine. Plus a couple of bags of crisps and peanuts which was fine. We sat on a comfy sofa by a large fireplace and everything was pleasantly decorated. Would go again.

We had a relaxed meal with four people and a dog for a birthday supper at this local pub in Meldreth. We reserved a table and checked they were happy that we bring our dog and they said yes as long as we ate in the bar area. We were seated next to a real log fire, and ordered from their concise menu and received good advice on portion size and specials. The food is good quality and pleasingly straight forward with a selection of starters and mains and specials. And the desserts were exceptional. The table service was exceptional too, and one of the best I have had in a pub and made this clear to Sue. Our dog was made a fuss of by several of the customers and staff, which he enjoyed immensely. If you want a cheerful family and dog friendly night out at a pub with tasty food the British Queen really will fit the bill.

We dined here for the first time recently and although we did enjoy our evening the food was .....okishIt would not tempt us back again. It was not 'special' and to tempt diners out these days you need to be offering a bit above what we found here. Pleasant service.

The old adage 'use or lose' should be in forefront of your mind when considering dining at a village pub; so many are closing for lack of use. One that deserves your patronage is the delightful 'The British Queen' in the village of Meldreth (4 miles north of Royston, off the A10). Our group of five arrived at this carefully and tastefully restored historic building and were greeted by two friendly barmen (of a certain age), one of them showed us to our table in the attractive separate dining room. There was a distant buzz from locals drinking in the bar. Our drinks order, selected from a range of real ales, came swiftly and we then placed our food order, all choosing to select a main, possibly leaving room for a desert later (ginger sponge pudding?) We had heard good reports of the pies - short-crust pastry top and bottom - and two went for steak and ale and another two for the chicken, leek and mushroom. The fifth member of our group had the chicken breast stuffed with ricotta & spinach and wrapped in Parma ham. All dishes came with a variety of fresh vegetables and all were enjoyed, the generous portions resulting in each having a coffee to round off their meal as no room was left for a 'pud'!We can certainly recommend a short detour off the A10 for a meal here; in fact, we would recommend that you aim your car specifically here for an enjoyable experience and certainly a satisfying meal.

I had a lovely meal on Saturday night in the restaurant at The British Queen with friends. This is one of my favourite places in the area to come for dinner and drinks; the food is always fantastic and the staff are always friendly and welcoming, plus the prices are very reasonable. There was a nice atmosphere in the restaurant and in the bar area afterwards which made for a very enjoyable evening. I would definitely recommend this pub and they do a fantastic sunday roast as well.

Despite living only 5 miles from this pub restaurant we had not used it until this week.We were recommended to it by our daughter and she was proved right.Yes the bar area is still a pub at heart but it is very welcoming as was the manager who could not have been more friendly or helpful.AS well as the bar area where we ate the restaurant looks very nice and relaxed.MENU-Not too extensive but varied and interesting.Quality of food was excellent and could not be faulted. We plan to use this place regularly both for Dinner and Lunch

Nice enough pub but avoid the lasagne! Possibly the worst reheated meal ever served. People seem nice though.

Great little pub in the heart of Meldreth with roaring log fire and a choice of Adnams Ghost Ship, Woodfordes Werry, Greene King IPA and Doombar ales plus a good choice of wines etc. Good start then. Ebullient and welcoming host serving a busy restaurant. Food cooked to order so don't expect it in 5min. Worth the wait - venison stew was sublime, big serving with dumplings, winter veg, ciabatta (or mash), piping hot and delicious to the last mouthful. Sea bream was served with orange and tarragon plus veg and was considered 'absolutely delicious' by someone who is not a huge 'fish' fan but was clearly converted! Ham, egg & chips also a generous portion and nicely cooked. Puds? They'd almost run out but sticky toffee and custard did not disappoint. Looking forward to going back.

This is a great little village pub that has a fine choice of wines and beers. The food, although not haute cuisine, is good quality pub fare with a good menu. Advise you book as the dining room is not the largest! The decor is in good shape and there is a very large garden. This is a true pub with locals at the bar but you're always made welcome and service is quick and polite.Give it a shot......it'll surprise you!

This pub was recommended to us by the owners of the nearby b&b where we were staying. They phoned to book a table for us & although the restaurant was full a table was reserved for us in the bar. On arrival we found that the place was heaving both inside and out, even though it was only 6.30pm. A smiling barmaid showed us to our table and quickly returned to take our order. From a fairly extensive menu we both chose the lasagne, which came with plentiful garlic bread and salad. It arrived promptly and was really delicious, and that combined with the lovely atmosphere made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
