Good range of drinks and reasonable prices for the area. Not just front of pub but rear garden rare for the area

Nice sized saloon bar and garden. Famed for decent pies. Toilets are old style. Loads of gin. Beer selection not too hot but a few ales. Have a quiz night. Nice enough place for an area lacking good options.

A good old classic no nonsense pub with great beers and even better pies! Beer garden was cute during the evening with fairy lights and the local community seemed very welcoming

If you like gin, this is a good place to be! There must be 30-odd gins here! If you want a good pie, this is also the place for you. Basically, this is a pub that knows how to please. Good beer garden out the back, easy going staff, good food, great drinks selection too! This may well become my local!

Looking to watch the rugby so thought I'd give the British Oak a try, I'm fairly new to the area and have passed this attractive looking pub many times but never ventured in. On entering it's obviously a locals local where everyone knows each other but not in a way that's exclusive and the atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed. Beer was good and well priced. Toilets spotless. Totally different atmosphere to the nearby Royal Standard (also a very good pub but serving a different need) Will definitely be back during this six nations and most probably beyond.

Spent New Years Eve here after many years avoiding the rip off of some establishments. No tickets and no entry cost and live music - What a joy! The staff were jolly and helped get the drinks out to all. The live band CHAIN were superb and the pub was full of customers yet everyone was friendly and we all saw the new year in with a bang. Had an absolute top night here. Totally recommend this local London pub.

Most pubs are now glorified restaurants or theme bard. This is a proper local pub with local regulars. The landlord has won prizes for how he keeps and serves his ale and these are well deserved. There is an amazing selection of gin too along with a real etched glass gin palace. The other good available is pies - but they are delicious and come in a variety of flavours. Folk night is one of the most musical I have attended. The rest of the week the pub is great for conversation. The small pub garden is a plus in the summer. Not aimed at tourists but like also which makes it a south London gem.

"If I ran a pub I'd.." How many times have you phrased that question? Well the truth seems to be that most publicans don't get to make the rules, they just get to apologize for them.Large chains seem to be run by canny marketeers and shrewd accountants (witness different pricing on otherwise identical menus within chains - set according to the local demographic, as just one example). On the flipside - canny and shrewd are not exactly synonymous with a warm welcome, and sometimes nor is the ‘local’ in local pubs. Not so with the British Oak – its owned and run by a bloke not a committee, and the way it is is the way it should be - the way you would want your pub to be run. It serves well-kept (i.e. frequently drunk) real ales, Pie Minister pies for a fiver, TVs are silent if on at all (except when there is rugby, as Blackheath Rugby Club is close by) - all straightforward decisions, but there are subtle aspects that make a huge difference. The toilets don’t smell for starters. The floors and surfaces are not tacky and there isn’t that acrid scent of spoilt beer in the air. It’s warm. The seats are comfortable. The staff are genuinely friendly and long-serving (low staff turnover should be a KPI for those shrewd accounts to measure). And the locals are friendly (that last part can be a bit like lion-taming sometimes I should imagine).Dogs are allowed (else I’d say it was missing a cat) and the two bars are separated by a substantial and doorless brick wall, with families invariably choosing the larger half, and children are expected to behave (i.e. remain seated). As someone who runs a London childfree singles meet up group, the last part is a big draw for me, so I’m going back. Tomorrow in fact, with my mate Charlie.(Parking is free too!)

Always a friendly welcome and a peaceful environment at this quality local. Decent beer, charming garden (with scraggly hens!) and host to the folk nights. Perfect.

Some really good friends whose local this is invited us to join them early last Saturday evening (the night of the Blackheath fireworks display) at the British Oak for a couple of pints and what has just started being served there, pie and mash! Later in the night when we returned it was far more lively and there was a band playing but when we were there (about 6.15), it was quieter so we had a table to ourselves and enjoyed one of the 6 varieties of pie with mash and mushy peas. All very delicious. The pub as others have commented is not dripping with machines or piped music and very traditional decor. We liked it all. Would recommend.

A friendly local pub currently under some minor refurb. Saturday night was music night group Bruise were excellent. Not seen before but will go again. Shame no longer serve Sunday lunch. This is a real ale pub serving a decent pint. Often 4 or more ales available.Has a quiz night once a month and Blackheath Folk Club meet there weekly (tuesdays) with an open mic policy.

Well, we've seen the Oak change hands a few times. Some of the previous landlords were interesting, some less so. For the last year or two, the charming staff have made this into a perfect local. Good beer, reasonably priced, plenty of seating, a quaint beer garden (now complete with hens), monthly folk club (which is a revelation). We always go on Christmas Day, when it's positively heaving. Great old-fashioned pub for drinking and chatting. No TV or other nonsense in the main bar. The bartenders are both fast and lovely. Wait. That sounded wrong. They work fast, and are extremely friendly and professional. That's better. Go. Try the Mad Goose. See you there.

Few frills, no piped music, large beer garden and regular music and quizes. Only decent boozer for miles as the surrounding housing estates were built by quakers and the few others that do exist are pretty rough.
