Being a local I did not stay at the hotel but I thought I'd try the food as eating out in Newport is limited to say the least (unless you like pizza/pasta, there are at least 4 of these). I fancied traditional pub food which today is a scarce as all the pubs seem to be in the Gordon Ramsey mode, posh food, very little of it and expensive. The Wheatsheaf’s menu included real pub classics including Steak and Ale pie, Pork Belly, Steak and Chips, Lamb Shank to name a few. For starter’s I opted for the chilli prawns, a generous portion, cooked perfect and presented shell off which saves all that peeling and messy fingers! Starters are all priced at £5.00. I followed this with a perfectly cooked 8oz sirloin steak (med-rare) with lovely crispy chips and a blue cheese sauce accompanied by a nice crisp fresh salad, (which was not just a bowl of leaves like in most places). Although the chips were frozen they were crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, perfect, I almost mistook them for the latest fad (3 times cooked chips). The chef must have a trick up his sleeve. The steak was cooked perfect. A field mushroom would have been a nice touch. Here's the good bit, all main dishes are only £10, if you fancy steak you do pay a £4.00 supplement which is fair. Even though I was stuffed I could not resist the homemade Rhubarb Crumble with cream. I managed to eat ¾ of it. Again, all the desserts were priced at £5.00. All I can say is although this pub has had a bad reputation for food in the past this is certainly not the case now, it’s really worth giving it a try.

Pickle & Dill Delicatessenlocation-icon51 Union StreetFrench

Pickle and Dill is fantastic! Service is always friendly, food is delicious. Breakfast choices are not run of the mill, for example sourdough toast topped with smashed avocado, tomatoes and feta made amazing by a superb dressing. Their lunchtime toasted sourdough sandwiches are the best I’ve ever tried. To finish off the cake selection is varied, unusual and changes with the seasons.

So Yummy Cafe & Creperielocation-icon159 High StreetFrench

I decided to visit for the first time in search of a late lunch after reading the recent review by Matt & Cat & I wasn’t disappointed. At 3pm on a Saturday, I was well last peak trade but I was welcomed & able to sit where I wanted. An afternoon tea of sandwich, cake & tea was advertised as part of a scheme to encourage shoppers to spend £5 in their local high street & was the perfect treat. The ham sandwich was simple but very fresh & made with real butter which was a bonus (why do cafes insist on slathering on thick layers of marg?) & garnished with a small dressed salad. I chose coffee & walnut cake & received a generous slab with plenty of walnuts & a thick layer of butter cream. The tea was hot, plenty for more than two cups & accompanied by a rich tea finger & mini bottle of milk. The loo was clean & fresh & the whole place felt very covid secure. The customers leaving as I arrived were equally complimentary about their lunch. I’ll definitely be back!

This was a real find for us on our first night on the island. Think it may have ruined us for anywhere else. The service was friendly and respectful and the food.... Tremendous! Enticing presentation and truly delicious flavours. As vegetarians we always appreciate chefs who make us feel included in the culinary experience. Thank you.
