The Braided Fig in Aberdeen City

Waked in with a booking and was seated at a table in a tight corner when other tables were empty as there was only two couples in the place. It felt like we were put n the naughty corner. We booked a table after looking at the menu on the restaurant website.we were handed a menu and were told that a couple of things were not available from the menu as they are in the process of changing the menu. On looking at the menu we noticed that the things that were on the online menu that drew us into booking were missing ie fish, scampi, duck breast pretty staple dishes in any Aberdeen restaurant. At this point we decided that there was nothing on the menu that appealed to us. The waitress arrived at our table with the drinks order and we questioned her about the menu and were told that the online menu is just a sample menu. Well it is one of the most varied sample menus I have seen. We told her that there was nothing that appealed to us and that we would be leaving. As we got up to leave she stepped across my wife as if to block her and rather rudely said “well Madam you will have to pay for the drinks ordered” to which my wife told her the drinks were ordered on the pretence of having food and we were not going to sit there and drink with no food. My wife had to squeeze past her to leave. On the way out I noticed that they have a big board at the entrance displaying the very menu that we were looking at the night before. Surely this is getting customers to come in to the restaurant under false pretences. If you are going to change a menu then you need to withdraw the old one first. First time we have been there and it will be the last. Not a good experience 1 star awarded only because it won’t allow me to post with none!!!!!

It was very quiet for a Saturday night, but Union Street was also quiet. The food and service was spectacular. First time I had eaten here and was pleasantly surprised. The presentation to the variety on the menu was what you would expect in a top restaurant. Each plate that the food was served on was picked for the food that was laid on it. The menu choice was varied and catered for everyone. Fully recommended 👌.

One of the best meals I've had in ages! Highly recommend 👌 Relaxed atmosphere too, with friendly & helpful, but unobtrusive staff.

The vegan aubergine dish was salty and not as tender as I would have liked, but the katsu curry sauce was amazing.

Had the Persian Lamb. Mountains of mushy "stuff" most of which I left. I think it was meant to be couscous and cauliflower but it was just an insurmountable mountain of gloop. Quantity prioritised over quality. Yuk!

Nice food and interesting interior. Worth a visit.

This was my first visit and I was delighted that they served one of my favourites, scallops. I would have liked them more caramelized and a tad warmer but I enjoyed them none the less. My sea bass main was lovely and very enjoyable. I am always disappointed with the sweet menu nowadays, as they always seem to have the same, brownies, sorbets etc. The staff although young were excellent, attentive without being intrusive. I wasn't very happy with our table as we seemed to stick out parallel with the front door and I was quite cold. My companions really liked the coeliac and vegetarian menus. I would go back again, maybe.

Food wasn't as good as it was a few years ago, there were errors in the order and everyone at the table was cold. Staff were friendly though and offered to fix the mistakes but we just wanted to eat and go somewhere warmer.

Great menu and drinks available. Food was top notch, as always. Our only slight feedback would be the speed of service, specially our appetizer came out at the same time as our starters. Other than that, great experience and would recommend.

Staff took us in without a reservation after a short wait at the bar which was excellent. Really enjoyed the food, it was slightly pricy so good for a treat

We had a dinner there great service food was very good and tasty only complaint was it took ages for them to serve it must have been lack of chefs in the kitchen don't know as we weren't in a hurry it didn't matter hopefully it will improve CHEERS!!

Food was great, we opted for a langoustine scampi and pulled turkey burger. Chips were fab and all very fresh and tasty. Service was good, polite and welcoming. Definitely recommend.

The food was absolutely delicious

We went down for restaurant month, and was giving a choice 3 course £25 or 5 course for £30. The 5 course contains alcohol without alternative. There timing we're all over the place, mostly waiting 25mins between courses. We arrived at 7:30pm and left at 9:30pm. They put a Service Charge on the bill of 10% which is frowned upon in Aberdeen. Normally you would give a tip if you think the service is good or not. The men's toilet was broken and I had to used the disabled toilets instead. This looked like it was used for storage and didn't feel like they used this toilet seriously. Food: Starters Bread with chicken butter Crab on toasted bread The choice to use sour dough bread twice felt like eating half a loaf of bread, I would consider this poor choice. The Crab paste used was too little Main roast chicken The roast chicken was consider well cooked and would consider this a 4/5 for tastiness unfortunately the presentation was lacking. Intermediate The gin sorbet Can't comment, was driving afterwards and contains alcohol, there was no alternative. Desert Lemon tart The lemon zesty was correct,but unfortunately the amount given was far less than acceptable for a Desert. Overall I was left hungry, annoyed, and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone until they change there attitude of this restaurant.

Attentive staff, good options on the menu. Opted for the soup of the day and chilli brisket; both tasty and plentiful.

A bit pricey .no Gordon's gin which I like had to pay for the fancy stuff. Apart from that not bad

First time here. The service was excellent and the food fantastic. I had the Black Mac, macaroni cheese with black pudding and bacon, is to die for and finished with apple crumble which I was unable to finish. Would I go back, most definitely

Mixed experience of dining here at Sunday lunchtime (1pm). Arrived to a very quiet restaurant , and seated very close to another table despite there only being 3 tables full in the restaurant at the time. No background music so atmosphere was very quiet and intense, until someone remembered to put the music on! Pros: •Food was amazing. Couldn’t fault it. As good as photos show and more! •Service was very good. Friendly, attentive staff Cons: •Menu not what is shown on website, which for someone who likes to plan their food ahead, was disappointing. •No drinks menu … at all! Had to ask what options were for soft drinks and got listed the usual coke, Diet Coke, lemonade etc… but would prefer a drinks menu to consult •Food took about 20-25 mins to come out, which given there were only 1/2 other tables waiting for food at the same time, seems a little lengthy to me All in all a good experience, but could be improved!

Decided to book for an evening meal on a recent trip to Aberdeen. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff are professional and attentive. Our main courses were both of high quality and freshness. The waitress allowed me to swap bacon for black pudding on my burger, which was appreciated. Our desserts were equally good, which rounded off a great evening. Highly recommended.

Oh dear! I went here with friends for my birthday and the food was lovely so I decided to book a big family meal here for November. The booking was problematic from the start as they wouldn't give us a 7pm or 7:30pm time as group bookings can't be taken then due to the kitchen being busy! I called back to secure a later time, despite the fact that this was more difficult for us, and was then told they couldn't necessarily seat us together as it would depend on how they decided to lay out the restaurant on the day!! I requested that we were seated together regardless of where in the restaurant that might be but they wouldn't guarantee that. Clearly business must be booming there if they can put so many hurdles in the way of a 15 person booking. I wanted to support local...obviously The Braided Fig don't need it! Update to reply below A prompt response albeit mostly inaccurate. I could have posted the reservation confirmation but why bother? Ultimately, this reply says everything potential customers need to know about the experience on offer. When requesting a 7pm slot and asking that my family are seated together for a birthday celebration makes me a difficult person and becomes "not getting my own way" I think it's fair to say that customer experience is not a priority here.

Excellent food, very attentive service .

Walked into the restaurant at 8pm on the 3rd of September to have some food, states clearly on the website last orders at 8.30pm, there was people eating but the young waitress said sorry the kitchen is closed! If you state a time on your website you should honour that time, this was the last night of our stay here in Aberdeen and when we return we will take our business elsewhere. Thanks for nothing.

Nice place for a night out and great meal.

Food was good but expensive for what it was. Service was way below par, staff were attentive when entering and leaving but when ordering our meal and between was not good. Around a 45min wait for starter which was focaccia (shared). Then another 20min wait for our main. Overall disappointing for a meal that we were looking forward to.

We were visiting this restaurant based on a referral and we were not disappointed at all! This is a really nice and cute restaurant in the heart of Aberdeen offering a large variety of great, also Scottish, dishes. The staff was very likable and attentive and the setting of the restaurant is very cozy and great for couples but also for groups. We will certainly come back if we have the chance!

Always liked this place, simple tasty menus. First time back since Covid, the style is the same, we were told that service might be slow as they were short of staff on the kitchen, as we were there to catch up with friends this wasn't an issue. We had a great meal out, although my panko Scampi (langoustine tail) was too dry - perhaps held in the warmer while the other meals were prepared? The others were delighted with their meals. We didn't think the service was slow but then we were there for the conversation. Only 3 or 4 other tables that night. I'd recommend this place, Enjoy.

I have dined at The Braided Fig several times over the years however hadn’t been for a few years. I chose to dine here on my birthday with friends as it has consistently been a nice place for a drink with good food and a nice atmosphere. However on this occasion I was left very disappointed with both the food and the service. We were a table of 11 people with a booking for 6pm - all of us were seated and awaiting one individual who hadn’t yet arrived at 6:10. We were approached by staff who asked where the other person was and they were assured the individual was on their way and would arrive in the next couple of minutes. This staff member proceeded to state that I should tell them to “hurry up” as if they weren’t there within the next 5 minutes then we would risk losing our table and not being served due to “clashing with other tables” (…there were no other occupied tables in the restaurant at the time). I was aware of this 15 minute rule which was presented to me after I had booked the table within their “terms and conditions”, and I can appreciate the need to have these in place to ensure a business can run smoothly. However, the way in which it was approached and the tone we were spoken to in was not, in my opinion, acceptable - especially given it was only one person we were waiting for, and we were a large group willing to provide them our custom. I have dined in most restaurants in Aberdeen and a variety of restaurants throughout my life and I have never been presented with such a bizarre requirement. The experience overall after that was pleasant enough, we were served by a selection of the waiting staff who were friendly and had good customer service. We did however wait a particularly long time for our food - which was quite ironic given we were told to hurry up at the beginning - and made even more damning by the fact that all our food was overcooked. I ordered the lamb and while the presentation and dish itself was nice, it was let down by the severely overcooked lamb which ruined the dish. The starter (bruschetta) was just ok. The best part of my meal was the wine. At the end of our meal, my friend actually had to approach the bar staff to ask for the bill which again was quite odd given we were essentially told to hurry up and order from the get go when we first sat down. This experience definitely tarnished my views of The Braided Fig and I won’t be returning. It is unfortunate that one member of staff approached our table in the way she did. This is clearly detrimental to the custom this restaurant will receive in future given all 11 of our table would not return! Hugely disappointing for a once much-loved local restaurant.

Food was great when it eventually came but the service let it down. We (a table of 3) waited more than an hour between starter and main. We'd clearly been forgotten about as we watched tables come in after us and be served. And when we asked, we were fobbed off with "we're really busy" (they weren't). Own up to mistakes and don't patronise your customers.

Went in with my colleague for Lunch about 1pm, the atmosphere was colorful, nice and quiet. But unfortunately most of the things in the menu wasn't available. Its quite sad as you would think the Manager or Chef would know what is and isn't available before one makes an order and hoping the food comes, only to be told apologies 😀 We just had drinks and left.

This was the best meal we had during our visit to Aberdeen. The ambience was lovely, the service perfect, and the food delicious!

Lovely place. We arrived just after opening & settled in a comfy chair for a coffee & a perusal of the menu. The kitchen opens at 12, so a nice coffee to take the chill off on a dreich Aberdeen morning was just the ticket. Lunch was lovely. Our dishes were Black Mac & Langoustine Scampi. If I'm honest, I'm not sure the addition of the black pudding added anything to the delicious macaroni cheese, but the pancetta was nice with it. My husbands only complaint was that his meal was served in little baskets on a wooden board! His exclamation of Oh no, it's on a board! was met very politely by our waiter immediately offering to put the meal on a plate. With a, now, happy husband, the meal was eaten without further delay. He loved the tartar sauce & the lemon in a muslin bag. My only real complaint (its not a biggie either) was that the only decaf coffee they had was instant, so a bit of a shame, but hopefully they can look into that & next time it won't be. All in All a nice experience. We will definitely be back.

Had to wait 20 minutes for our table despite arriving at our booked time and didn't order starters and it was a full hour after our booking time that we got our food. Meal was nice but very expensive prosecco - £28 😮

The Korean chicken was wonderful lived up to what I thought it would be , Menu was very limited and not much to choose from for picky eaters, didn't enjoy the main course chicken parm too much as it was fairly bland.

Please update your closing times before getting mad at customers for not ordering fast enough. Website says kitchen closes at 8.30pm but we were being rushed and it was about 7.20pm? We ended up not ordering because we felt unwelcomed and uncomfortable. We went to Vovem for dinner and although we were a walk-in, the customer service was great.

Nice wee place in the heart of the city. Great vegan options, friendly staff. It was quite noisy but otherwise a lovely meal. Would return for sure!

On my tour of your beautiful country I found myself in Aberdeen. I dined at The Braided Fig as their website said an exceptional dining experience and I wanted to try: it didn't disappoint. More a 4.5*. Lovely restaurant, it looks classy but very relaxed, the food is excellent and staff and service great It uses a palette of pale greens and purple hues with different materials nicely contrasting with the light wooden tables. The bar area looks upmarket, almost like a coctail bar. There is also a tree iluminated with lights, dead but so large that it forms a canopy over the drinks area with lower tables and armchairs. Beautiful. My starter of warm confit duck leg salad was very good. As a main, the special market fish of the day pan seared cod with potatoes, brocolly, petit pois and pea pure was superb. Mint choc chip dessert a delicious ending to a very good meal. The chef is clearly very accomplished. In brief, high quality ingredients, with dishes very well executed and presented, and excellent service. All in a beautiful setting. Very highly recommended.

Cannot recommend this fabulous restaurant enough for making my daughters graduation meal very special. The food was excellent with the most amazing vegan options to choose from, the staff were so kind and helpful they even conjured up a magnificent tropical mocktail for her 🍹. Didn't had the chance to try the food or drinks as we were turned down by a waitress on Wednesday evening. She said that due to lot of people coming in recently they won't be able to accommodate us. Which is odd, given that there seemed to be approx. 4 tables taken, there were 2 waitresses working and some of the people already had their food. We would have waited and had some drinks first if that was the issue, but the waitress didn't even offer that, just turned us down. Probably won't be returning back as the service wasn't what I expected.

Friendly staff, nice setting, food OK, nothing to write home about .

Had the set menu - starters and mains were decent overall, veal was a bit overdone but nothing bad. Service was very slow meaning we had to postpone a booking for another venue. After asking if desserts were almost ready we were repeatedly told '10 more minutes' but eventually had to say we were leaving once almost reaching 3 hours mealtime, and to just get the bill. The desserts were charged onto the bill and when we asked why they said they were ready to go but we were leaving. So we asked for them to be brought out since we had to pay, but were told they were now in the bin and that it was our own fault. Strange experience and bad attitude from what turned out to be the manager.

Visited this Saturday with a group of friends , food was absolutely amazing , but night was ruined by the service, food took forever to arrive , no apologies or anything.

The food was amazing but 2 hours in and we hadn't even been asked if we wanted desserts, staff rarely ever came past to ask how the food was or if we needed more drinks. 2 and a half hours for a meal is ridiculous, that was only a main and dessert. had 2 drinks in 2 and a half hours.....

I loved the food and wine, lovely stuff and not expensive, for plate of food paid just £14, tasty and looking beautiful.

Went here for ARW. The food and cocktails were beautiful. Particular favourite was the Korean cauliflower bites and special glitterball cocktail. My only gripe would be that one of our guests has a few dietary problems and we all had to order off the same menu.

Lucy was a good host. The food was beautifully presented. My dessert (chocolate & cherries) was fantastic. I would recommend visiting if you're looking to treat yourself.

The only reason for some stars is that the food is very good. We booked in as a group for the Christmas fixed menu, and had to pay a deposit to secure booking (which is fine) but then are also charged the meals in full if someone cannot attend (this was due to COVID contact). This makes the deposit a bit meaningless if the full meal needs to be paid anyways - it would have been okay if takeaway was doable but we were informed it was not. Service was also not great. We’d asked for more gravy and given one small jug and informed that was all we could get. Food is great but management and service could do with much improvement.

Food was okay, the waitress who was serving us was actually quite snoot Also, you pay £20pp deposit for the Xmas meal, which is understandable. One person cancelled and you not only lose the deposit but also are required to pay the full £34, which again could be understandable. BUT they don't even give you the food for that person we paid for even though we asked. Utter joke.

I have always had a wonderful experience here. The food is fresh and locally sourced and tastes amazing. Portion sizings are decent too. Definitely getting what you pay for.

Fantastic food and exellant staff

First day in Aberdeen and was trying to find a place to have late lunch as hotel is not ready for check in. Found this gem the city centre. Very cosy restaurant with ample outside seating in a quiet and not busy area. The fig tree as you go inside is phenomenal! Ideally placed where the bar is and reception. Burger is amazing as well as the rest of the food. Covid rules apply. Mask is required. Price is affordable. Very highly recommended when you are in Aberdeen!

We booked a table at the Braided Fig on Saturday night for my twin daughters birthday celebration. The food was delicious with vegan and vegetarian options that were really lovely and the portion sizes were really good. The staff were all friendly and attentive. We'll definitely be back soon.

Crowd-pleasing menu with a top layer of ambition. Results are excellent and were devoured with orgiastic moaning. Portions generous, service friendly. Would happily go back, even the same day.

We booked the braided fig quite late today there was only one family when we got there having Sunday lunch. The menu was varied but we knew we would have the roast as it has always been a favourite. Having said that we have had a lot of different things on the menu in the past vegetarian and fish dishes also burgers with black pudding which my husband loves. As I was driving I asked for a non alchaholic cocktail and I had a lovely raspberry pineapple gingerbeer concoction which was very refreshing and no problem for them to make. The service was ideal and plenty time to digest and have coffee and wine for my husband. Thank you for a lovely Sunday lunch.

Nice and original place. We had coffee on the terrace as the weather was great, but there was plenty of space inside.

Had a delicious meal here with wife and friends. I had the mussels starter and halibut main. Both superb. Will defenitly be back in the near future
