Popped in for a quick bite to eat around lunchtime. Seated at a table right next to the toilet which was *really* unpleasant- around 10 people in the space of the 30 mins we were there got up and used the toilet and when you are eating….. it’s quite off putting to smell and see the toilet. The door opens in the direction of the table so any smells unfortunately are quite obvious. We asked to move tables as one became free whilst we were there - only to be told that they had a reservation for that table in 30 mins time (we would’ve been gone by then). I understand they want to squeeze as many tables into a tiny space but I really think they should ditch the table by the toilet or ideally move the toilet completely. Food OK although I asked for a banana crepe and got strawberries instead. Won’t return.

Lovely little place. Nicely surprised by the galettes quality. Quite nice (being French, i have quite some to compare to). The sandwiches were tasty, but the plate presentation was very modest. Nothing else was given, just the sandwich cut in half. No side salad or tomatoes. I had a salad bowl which was quite nice. Price/quality was good.

Beautiful views- but that’s all. The food was atrocious, very expensive (£21.00) for a lamb dish, (£17) for fish and chips. Lentil soup (£6.50). These prices are absolutely justified for the setting, IF the food was fresh and homemade. All I can say is that ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING was out of the freezer. Rolls with soup were the par baked ones- nothing wrong with that if it was a cheaper offering. Onion rings frozen, fish, chicken burger, all dishes served with limp and sad skinny fries- well, just mush fries shapes… Also, all drinks served in pint size plastic cups. Please think twice.

We tried to go here on a Sunday. Food looked nice on the menu but when we entered, the waitress completely ignored us, then we we went to sit she was quite rude telling us to wait. We waited, then another group walked past us and sat down. When we sat down our table wasn't cleaned properly and no one spoke to us. We ended up leaving before ordering.

Discovered this place whilst walking behind the high Street and we're thrilled we did! We had the 'specials menu' brie and bacon gallete which was absolutely delicious. We arrived to an almost empty restaurant, “greeted” by a young woman who boredly handed me the menus and told us to sit where we wanted. The server seemed rushed off his feet, despite the lack of customers. Two of us had fish and chips and one had a chicken kebab. The grilled chicken was tasty, the battered haddock was… adequate. The chips were pretty terrible. There is a great view. I wont be back.

So disappointed. Came here a long time ago and it was a sweet little cafe with good food and lovely service. Unfortunately it has gone so far downhill that I feel the need to warn others about it. Firstly staff on their phones constantly and absolutely no atmosphere to the restaurant. The main issue is the food. Daylight robbery it should be called. £15 for a McDonald’s standard burger, in fact McDonald’s is fresher! The smallest bit of cheese is thrown on the super flat and frozen patty that tastes like it’s been at the bottom of the packet for a long time. Fish was okay for a frozen slab but like the burger, it was just thrown on the cheap looking plate. I hardly ever leave bad reviews but I’m just so shocked at how awful this place has become. The “spectacular view” that is their claim to fame will not lesson the blow of getting your bill or lesson the foul taste left by the food. Staff training and a competent chef team is needed. It’s a good job they serve mints on exit.

It’s located down a charming path to the lock ness. It was clean and the food very good for a tourist area. I had the chicken and steak kabobs with great rice and a fresh salad. My friends had nicely grilled salmon over fresh vegetables. They really take pride in their establishment. It took some time to get waited on so order everything from drinks to food at once to help speed things along.

As we were waiting for a boat trip thought it a good idea to call at the boathouse to enjoy a snack and cuppa, the place itself is in a prime location right on the edge if the loch and TBH is the best thing going for it. As we were limited for time I just ordered soup of the day, Lentil with a roll and a plate of chips plus tea for two, the soup did not taste homemade as advertised, bland with no seasoning £6.95 , the roll appeared to have been nuked in the microwave as it was so hot, the chips £4.95 was a very small bowl of frozen scragg ends & not homemade as you would have expected, the tea was wet and warm and actually arrived 10 mins after the food very disappointing. Seeing some of the meals coming from the kitchen and presented to tourists for the price did not look inviting at all, definitely will not visit again as plenty of eateries very close by and wished we would have gone elsewhere. Total cost for food and tea £17.95.

The location is really great on the Loch Ness: pic-nic tables outside are certainly the best choice here, if weather enables. The place is obviously owned by a group of Turkish people, some of them struggling with speaking English. The staff is not particularly kind, but they care about what customers say. The food is rather good, and they really tried to Scottish-ize their menu (I believe they had no choice, as most of the customers are tourists looking for local food).

Booked the restaurant for family of 4 adults and one child, but did not realise that it really was more of a Turkish menu with some Scottish favourites thrown in. Service was not particularly good, we had to ask for drinks and waiter said , yes when I've finished cleaning a table? Also had to ask for the bill at the end. No atmosphere and staff were bit "stilted" and not sure if they really understood us? It was more of a refectory type dining and not great ambience. Limited views out onto the loch because of the small boat house type windows, but better than no windows as bits of the views were great. You would be lucky to get a table with one of the long windows but you can't have everything? The location is just amazing with pic nic tables outside. Not a lot of choice on the menu and I settled for the lamb casserole which was good but not a lot of it. This came with tzatziki, flat bread and rice, which I enjoyed it all. Others had the mixed and chicken kebabs and the meat to me looked totally dried up, so glad I didn't order them? My Granddaughter got the cheesy macaroni and it looked and tasted the best! My husband ended up with an upset tummy and said that it was something on the salad or one of the sauces, so it was not good for him? Totally over priced and would only come back here for the location and have a coffee?

Popped in for an early lunch on the basis that it got good reviews for GF options, which it did. I settled on lentil soup with a side of chips (my OH had the same) and our son had a burger and chips. I didn’t notice a price for the soup as it was on the specials boards but how much could soup be? What arrived was the thinnest, wateriest soup I have ever had, which had very little texture or flavour. Really disappointing. Along with a glass of tap water and two teas, our bill came to £55! We stopped off for a quick lunch stop walking the bike trail from Exmouth to Exeter. We ordered some baguettes which when at the table were tiny and the bread was quite over cooked and not nice to eat, but most of all the salmon creme cheese and dill didn't even contain Dill, which for 7 pounds I was a bit unhappy about as it wasn't a complicated sandwich. I thought overall they could offer a free salad with dressing etc, it seemed a bit mean on the presentation basically. I thought they could work on that as other cafes locally do offer more for the money. We had milkshakes too which were delicious and in nice glass mugs so. But I do think the cafe has lovely decor.

MORE AT Google

We booked The Boathouse following a trip on the cruise boat to see Loch Ness. Booking was easy over FB messenger. Arrived at the empty restaurant, and the guy behind the bar just pointed over to a table, hardly muttering two words to us. After sitting, we looked over the menu to realise it was ridiculously priced but put it down to The Boathouse having the monopoly in the area and having such amazing views over the lake. So, we ordered. The menu didn't have a child's choice so we asked to be told a choice of pasta, sausages or fish. We chose sausages for my 5yr old, along with cheeseburger, fish and chips, and The Boathouse chicken. When the meals arrived, my sons meal was wrong (they sent a child's fish and chips), and the others looked dried up on the plate. No one checked on us during our meal and the waiter went for his break leaving the waitress to serve 4 other tables, taking orders, making drinks, and bringing food out. The food was nothing short of packet food. My cheeseburger was thin with a slice of rubber cheese on, oven chips, and a limp salad (£11.50); The Boathouse chicken (£15.95) and haggis was smaller than your hand, showing more plate than food and the mash we asked for looked dry. Given the mistake when bringing my son the wrong meal, he ate much later than us. No apology that the meal was late. His sausages were clearly Richmond's finest except we were charged enough that they should have been gold encrusted! They were gristly and he spat a mouthful out thinking that he had broken his tooth. My son didn't finish his meal, feeling rushed that the other 3 plates had been cleared away when empty and it felt like he was the only one eating that day. When we asked for the bill, we still weren't asked if the food was alright and a bill for nearly £60 was put in front of us!! I could have cried. We left hungry and grossly disappointed. We are on holiday so unlikely to be returning but would hate for anyone else to have such a disappointment too!! My advice would be to go to the chippy across the way and eat it in your car... you'll enjoy it much better.

Great location but same can’t be said for our experience. Pleasant young staff trying their best but without any apparent guidance. Carrot and coriander soup was thin, oily and tasteless and halloumi starter was pale and rubbery with wilted lettuce. Lamb Guvec was actually very nice and tasty but the salmon dish appeared to have been prepared some time in advance and very dry. People had long unnecessary waits to place orders, receive drinks, food and to pay. Those seated outside due to Covid were told to wait to be served but no one was going out to them. They may be there till the next ice age.

Casi no había carne en el plato con poco sabor y el pan era la mitad de una chapata pequeña.Mi esposa tenía el salmón, que era una porción decente de pescado, pero le faltaba sabor y presentación.La tarta de queso del día de postre para los dos. Unfortunately after booking a table for 7.30pm tonight made via telephone call on 1st August and confirmed at the time there was no table available for us on our arrival. Staff made excuses of bookings being made online but these had not been put in the diary. We were also informed bookings had been taken on the day. We could see our booking in the diary for 7.30pm under my forename which was what was taken during the call. There were at least 6 people waiting to be seated and several parties behind us waiting to be seated having made bookings for around the same time as us. Every table was full at this point with people still eating. We asked how long it would be before we could be accommodated and were told a table would not be available In the next hour to hour and a half. We decided to leave and try to find food elsewhere. Having messaged to make our complaint known we were offered explanations of being short staffed, to us needing to be more patient due to the current situation with COVID-19. (This being the exact reason we booked in advance) the owners wife, after a stream of messages back and forward did offer to give us a free meal if we returned to the restaurant but by that point staff at Tbe Lock Inn had gone out of their way to squeeze us in, having tried several other places. I would have preferred to post a positive review and was looking forward to sampling the varied menu, but unfortunately this was taken out of our hands.

Couldn’t fault the location, definitely the best view in Fort Augustus. However, the food was absolutely terrible. The soup was watery and the halloumi was served with some soggy shredded lettuce and a slice of cucumber. Not restaurant standard at all and definitely not worth the money. A better menu and some nicer furnishings inside and this place could be incredible, but we were sadly disappointed.

Great location with great views up Loch Ness. We managed to get a table at short notice. The food was first class as usual. the mixed kebab is very tasty and at 18.49 may seem expensive, the portion size is big and it's very tasty.

The Boathouse has so many good reviews that I was really surprised our experience was so disappointing - I assume that the COVID-19 pandemic has made the operating conditions very difficult, which has had knock-on effects on the ambiance and customer experience. The staff seemed rather stretched, it took a long time for them to acknowledge our presence when we arrived. We waited for them to serve drinks to tables and answer two phone calls before they took us to our table, which was jammed up against the wall with no possibility of enjoying any of the lovely views. The menu had plenty of things to tempt us - we ordered Halloumi and Sucuk sausages, but were served alarmingly quickly some Halloumi and split pea soup. When we pointed out this mistake we were told there were no sausages left, leaving us feeling we had little choice but to eat the soup. Both dishes were adequate, but uninspiring. We’d both chosen the Kuzu Guvec, a Turkish stew of lamb, tomatoes, peppers and mushrooms. The stew tasted ok, but was mostly sauce with sparse meat and vegetables. We paid £56 for 1x soup, 1x halloumi, 2x stew/rice/flatbread/yogurt and two pints of bitter. We did not find this good value for money for the quantity and quality of food that we received.

Sad! Food is nothing like the photos on the billboard outside!!! It showed prawns and a fabulous steak. Then menu has neither. I had the Boathouse chicken which was mediocre. The penne was OK, the sirloin was served with oven chips, but the salmon was nice, according to my daughter. It felt like a ‘ c-list celebrity chef was doing a menu for the village hall’. I asked for a good whisky so was served a ‘Tomatin’ as a local whisky only to be told later that it was ‘mass produced’ and the nearest one to Fort Augustus. If you are after an OK meal with great view then this is a good place. The staff were really nice, very attentive and very polite.

The location was the best part. Right next to Loch Ness where you could see the horizon from afar. The food? Painfully average. I have no idea what the other people writing down a review ate, but what my family and I had for dinner on our evening out was nothing but lazy poorly prepared plates of slop. The Tomato soup seems like it was straight out of the can with a little added pepper...oh and it was cold too. The salad was horrendous. To sum the food up, it was comparable to an average kebab shop. It was not restaurant level and disappointment is what we all felt after our food.

Place is nicer in person than it looks in the pictures on TA. The food was fine but nothing special. Wonderful views. Good COVID safety.

We enjoyed a very tasty meal here. The view was lovely over Loch Ness. More could have been done with the interior decor. COVID measures all in place and taken seriously.

We visited the Boathouse after a recommendation and were not disappointed. Although a limited ment due to Covid there was plenty of choice. I had the special which was sea bass, king prawn and spinach mash which was dynamite. Lovely to meet the owner at the end of our evening who showed us great hospitality

This should have been a 5* review but it was a little bit of a let down. No atmosphere, plastic/paper table Cloths and staff that were just inexperienced rather than rude. So much could be done to improve this place. Food was ok.

We imagined stumbling upon the Boathouse to be akin to finding a hidden gem, and for the location, stunning views of the loch and beautiful high beams it certainly delivers. Unfortunately, the experience turned out to be closer to walking into a abandoned echoing warehouse. As we walked in we noticed the sign reading 'booking only for food,' we had walked a couple of miles already so thought it was still worth an ask if they could fit us in without a booking. Upon enquiring the waiter at the bar drearily confirmed this with 'yes' and so we were about to leave, but thought to make our point clear that we wished to eat now (around 4pm) not later, at which point we were given the all clear with a further 'yes' and shown to a table. Hence the sign outside should perhaps be changed if bookings are not required? Service then switched to a waitress who also seemed to be rather dazed and didn't really engage us in friendly conversation. The atmosphere seemed to match the zombie-esque state of the staff perfectly; ourselves and a couple other tables were left to dine in stone cold silence - where was the music? In a place where you could hear a pin bounce off the floorboards the air needs to be filled with a little melody that puts diners at ease. I realised amusingly that I had been whispering for most of the time, feeling it was simply too quiet to raise my voice any higher. If you are wondering why then I have appointed four stars, this is almost all for the food. The Turkish meals were perfectly cooked with plenty of flavour, my personal choice of mains was the kuzu guvec which I can highly recommend. Well done, Chef.Just hit play on the stereo system, add a dash of staff enthusiasm and the Boathouse will be a hit.

Online menu is totally different to the menu in the restaurant. Very small menu and extremely over priced. Told the staff how different the menu was and got told ‘ it’s out of date ‘ suggested they change this online. Did not stay. Very poor atmosphere and staff showed no interest to the menu situation. Would not recommend. Cheapest thing on menu was around £17.

Given the quality of the accommodation at The Highland Club, I had high hopes for the food at the Boathouse. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to expectations. Very limited choice of drinks and the food was mediocre. The staff however were exceptionally helpful and attentive throughout our visit and the setting was beautiful.

The Boathouse. Read the reviews and gave it benefit of the doubt. Shouldn’t have. No atmosphere, staff distant and food poor. Started with garlic bread and grilled halloumi. Disaster. Dried out bland bread and two pieces of dried out pathetic cheese on curly lettuce that a starving mouse would have turned its nose up at.Onto the mains and just ok.This menu is designed so that the ingredients serve all dishes just with a different baste. Had mixed kebabs and chicken kebabs.Bland, bland and bland. Chicken with haggis. Same chicken strips as kebab with a slab of greasy haggis. Bland. In summary overpriced, and bland, No atmosphere and managed like. Covid 19 nuclear zone.
