The Black Swan in Amber Valley

We went in on the spur of the moment, early Saturday night, and we're found a table very quickly. The friendly team were most helpful. Tapas recommendations were made and they were all superb. Good portions, tasty, fresh and well presented.

Absolutely fab, staff very friendly and helpful, food was delicious and I loved that it comes up from 'below stairs' - the chef was definately putting the 'um' back in umami tonight....my Black Swan Sloppy Burger was soooooo tasty and the homemade fries were super yummy

Wow! Last minute date night with my other half and it was amazing, tapas was beautiful and very filling, main course was so nice too just couldn’t finish as tapas filled us up! Keep doing what your doing guys 😊

After being open a fair few years this place does not disappoint. The staff are very friendly, it's always busy yet always clean. The food.... AMAZING! The best calamari I've ever had in the UK. The portions are still a decent size and always come up very hot. Twenty years as a restaurant manager and I'd recommend this place to anyone.

Absolutely love the food at the black swan. It's so tasty and the tapas is excellent! Lots of choice, food is fresh and tasty. Other options on the menu are equally as delicious but I haven't found anywhere that does tapas anywhere near as good as the black swan. The staff are always welcoming and helpful. Highly recommended.

Visited whilst staying in Belper, a cheaper alternative to make day trips into the Peak District. Fab tapas and cocktails, great value for money and a hidden gem for those looking for great tasting food at affordable prices. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, especially the manager/owner(didn’t catch her name but a lovely lady who squeezed us in on our 2nd visit even though we hadn’t booked). Thank God they aren’t any closer to home as we would be skint and a +40” waist!

Lunch with my daughter, really lovely tapas, daughter is vegetarian and found plenty to choose from.Excellent tzatziki. Really lovely staff, went out of their way to direct us to a nearby carpark as the fair was on in the Coppice carpark nearby for a couple of days. Staff even switched on the heating as we were trying to find a warm spot to sit ( bright but chilly day ). Couldn't fault it for excellent food and attentive friendly service. Will definitely return.

Amazing tapas - a wide range of small plates on the menu. Between two couples we had ten tapas dishes and a bowl of fries. All the dishes arrived together, the food was hot, beautifully cooked and totally delicious. The serving staff were friendly and efficient. All in all, an excellent experience that we can recommend without reservation.

Amazing tapas restaurant/bar All the food we ordered (which included 5 tapas dishes, loaded fries and a desert) were all perfect, could not recommend highly enough. The location is brilliant next to a free car park and the staff is lovely.

Neil and his team did us a superb hot tapas buffet, delivered to our party in a village hall. Every dish was wonderful, and everyone loved it, still talking about it a week later!! Neil took account of all our requests and carefully labelled everything to show which was vegetarian, vegan, gluten free etc, which was really appreciated. It absolutely made our party, and was so easy to arrange. We can't thank them enough. Recommend to everyone to have their food, whether a party or in the pub

We have been coming here for nearly 10 years and by far the best place we have been to for tapas. Amazing dishes (try the katsu fries) and have a wide range of drinks including ales that change. Most importantly the people who work there and who own the place are so lovely, friendly and attentive. We are always welcomed warmly and treated like family.

Just stayed at The Swan Inn for the night as we were attending a family celebration. We booked two rooms and they were both excellent recently decorated to a high standard beds extremely comfortable and super shower. Little details made it feel extra special including fans as this weather was exceptionally warm! Thank you did your hospitality great value for money and hope to stay again.

Tonight we ordered takeaway tapas and ventured in for a drink whilst we collected. The sangria was missed and my partner said the Estrella was the best pint he has had, Neil looks after the lines and makes sure the lager is top quality. The food was ammmaaazzinggg!!!! Called in at The Black Swan today after checking out restaurants in Belper with a decent review. The Black Swan looked a great bet so we thought we'd give it a try. We're really glad we did and will certainly return as we had a lovely meal. We initially went for the tapas but there weren't as many meat dishes as we hoped so opted for something off the lunch and main menu. The aranchini was delicious and the fajita baguette was great. The homemade chips were the best, just like my mum used to make.We will certainly return. Yummy, homemade food, friendly staff and great service

The Black Swan on Market Square, Belper, is a good real ale pub of the more "modern" kind - a brighter interior in terms of both furniture and light floating in from outside, and general layout. A friendly place overall, and that also applies to the staff. A small selection of changing mains (1/2 of them burgers) is available. We found the cask ale selection to be a limited though, but those offered were non-standard beers by smaller breweries, which of course is commendable. A good option on a pub crawl in Belper, a tiny town blessed with an alarmingly high number of good pubs (traditional, craft & micro).

Falafel was awesome. A quick pub lunch, friendly staff and a varied menu. Nice to find a falafel and tasty salad in a pub. Staff couldn’t do enough, friendly and fast. Great place for lunch.

Outstanding home cooked food and friendly service. On top of a pretty standard pub menu they’ve got a delicious tapas menu, too, which is all freshly cooked and of a very high standard. Second visit for me and consistent both times, so would definitely recommend.

Lovely Sunday roast all homemade and the roast beef was cooked to perfection, atmosphere was warm and welcoming.

Before heading home stopped here for a pint as the car is parked in the free car park nearby, we had just visited the Memorial gardens nearby, a pleasant Sunday afternoon atmosphere, quick serviced and excellent choices of alcohol, well worth a drink.

We called in mid week, we got the last table for 4 for the 2 of us so had plenty of room. The service was quick, the food arrived promptly and was excellent with proper chips! We had a couple of people ask if our food was ok, clear the tables etc and we really couldn’t fault it, much improved on our last visit.

We arrived spontaneously on a Thursday after drinks at monk bar. They didn’t have any tables but accommodated us perfectly. Food was fantastic, the landlady is lovely and friendly and really helpful. We had lots of different plates of tapas. Couldn’t fault the place to be honest. A nice atmosphere we were in a side room so it’s wasn’t too noisy. Chorizo style dip with flatbread was particularly yummy. All the food and drinks were faultless. We will be back.

We were cooling down after a day out in the heat and decided to check this pub out. An extensive menu to suit all appetites. I had a Greek salad and it was delicious. Service was warm and friendly. Enjoyed our short visit.

Been here a few times, It’s always lovely food, the Sunday roast is so tasty, and so is the ham egg and chips, The staff are very friendly and helpful. Nice varied menu .

We have visited many times as a couple for lunch and always enjoyed the food, the beer is ok just not much choice. We visited again with family expecting to have lunch and we were turned away because children under 10 and babies are not allowed. I could understand this policy in an evening but not on a mid -week lunchtime. That’s 7 adults they turned away, and it was not busy. Sorry but we won’t be visiting again.

We called in just after 7pm unaware that there was 5 til 7pm deal on so it was very busy. We asked if there was a table and we were seated and advised they’d be over to take the order. The menu is on the wall, behind an unfortunate diner which was awkward and when after 30mins our order was finally taken I enquired how much longer we’d be waiting only to be told the kitchen had caught up, the food arrived 20 mins later. The food was nice, nothing out of the ordinary but perfectly acceptable, I think had it been a quicker service then my review would have been 4 stars.

I’ve been to many restaurants with my 7 year old son. He, like his parents, love food. However, The Black Swan does not allow children under the age of 10! What an odd choice to make for a village pub and a great shame. Not all families want to go to McDonalds or Pizza Hut. Shame, but will take our business and family to somewhere less snobby.

The food was excellent we order 10 tapas dishes and some wings all were cooked well and very tasty. Nice ambiance in the pub, good range of drinks and some great offers on several different gins. Worth a visit for lunch or dinner we will be back.

Quesadilla .. with guacamol, salad and the usual trimmings .. all good .. in fact really really good 😀 I will be back !

Consistently Great Food served by lovely staff . Good varied menu . Good vegetarian choices and helpful with allergies. Delicious Tapas menu and specials board. Sunday lunches very busy with a very good nut roast. Good guest beers including Oakhams Citra and Hobgoblin Gold . Very Good and cheap lunches . Improvements? Not many. Could include Spanish Tortilla and Tahini sauce for the falafels. Would also be good to have steamed vegetables as a side option. Overall very good value and an uplifting atmosphere after a hard days work.

Quite often drop in here to get a few drinks on a Sunday evening. Parking is free on the market place.not had any food here . Gets busy on a Friday and Saturday night.

Visited during December to this one of the best pubs in Belper, excellent atmosphere, great staff, good choices ot drink and well worth a pint or two, might try a snack next time.

After a film at the Ritz its only a short walk to this excellent pub at the market place in Belper, served by excellent staff with afine choice of alcohol, well worth a pint and parking nearby.

I had three little plates along with my friends ordering tapas too and we waited at least 20 minutes and when they came out I was like.... Where's the rest of the food? I had tworked meatballs in bland unseasoned sauce , chorizo drenched in oil and a few slices of peppers and macaroni croquettes that were cold and soggy

Well we did not actually eat here this time, ( very good when we did) but Tom the manager saved our bacon and let their lovely Suite upstairs for a night. What beautiful accommodation!!

Good beer, nice atmosphere. I like this pub! The bar staff are professional and nice. The beer is well kept, with a nice selection. And the outside patio area is great on a hot day.

Popped into the pub with the wife for a pint and decided to have the little plates/tapas I had the meatballs, squid, and piri piri chicken while my good lady had the vegetarian options food was great good sized portions staff were polite we will be going back.

Dropped in on spec. There was 6 of us altogether. Even though the Sunday lunch looked amazing we went for the little plates. These were like tapas. Halloumi was to die for. My 4 friends and myself visit the Black Swan several time a year. We dont all live in Belper but if we did we would eat here loads more often.

We have wanted to get food here for a while after seeing the menu whilst we have been there for a drink. We visited early lunch time on a Thursday, there is a good selection of food and drinks on the menu, including vegetarian options, and they offer ‘small plates’ which are similar to tapas.

Five of us for early evening meal,well looked after having ordered the beers and started drinking them the landlord came over and told us they weren’t to the required standard( barrel needed changing)took them back and replaced them ,a good start .

We ate here when staying at a nearby caravan site. The service was great and the food was excellent value. I had the half Cajun spiced chicken with rice and peas. Very tasty and good value at £9 for the portion.

Booked a table for Sunday lunch and had a lovely meal. Couldn't fault anything - friendly staff, good selection of drinks, something to suit everyone on the menu. Three of us had a small Sunday roast - a choice of three meats or nut roast for the veggies, we each had something different and we were all satisfied with what we had. The meal came with two types of potato and five other veg and was piping hot. Followed it with puddings and coffee which were also excellent. No hesitation in recommending it - I was only surprised there weren't more people there, word obviously hasn't got around yet! We'll definitely be going back.

Great pub at the top of the town centre, great place to get a pint before or after a visit to the Ritz which was the reason we visited and very glad we tried the great alcohol on offer, atmosphere and style of the pub is very charming with great staff as well, well worth a pint or two.

9 of us went for an early evening meal offer before 7pm . Food was very god value 2for £14 . Everybody enjoyed their meal and their was a good variety of meals had. Drinks were reasonably priced and a very pleasant night had by everybody

Came here as we often do at weekend.was really full of people eating ..no where to sit stand etc.i understand the downstairs has been closed now but on a sat night when everyones out for a drink theres no where for the drinkers! Personally would not want to hav a meal surrounded by groups of people being loud an enjoying themselves..has put me off coming here at the weekend now...sorry.need to decide if this is a pub or restaurant!!! Shame as it used to be a favorite of ours

Still great food and drink venue in week. Weekends now neither as spoilt by moving food to upstairs. Can't get anywhere to sit for a drink and new tables crammed in near bar so can't even get round or near the bar. So so loud. Not pleasant noise level.Get some carpets in. Or open downstairs for drinking if not doing food down there. Needs a rethink....

Popped in on spec after briefly looking at the website. Very pleasantly surprised. Huge menu range - we opted for tapas and nachos. Good value (proper main courses two for £14 mid week) washed down with real ale.

We went on a Monday, early evening for a bite to eat. I had phoned beforehand to ask about gluten free options. We opted for tapas as we weren't in the mood for a big plate, surprisingly decent selection of gf tapas, large portions, we ordered 6 between 2 and couldn't finish them.

This is the worse tapas I have ever been to. The meatballs and chicken were dry. The best part was the crusty bread. Definitely wouldn’t go again.

The food and service is wonderful. We went for the 10 tapas dishes for £30. The portion sizes are really good. The squid was absolutely beautiful. I would definitely recommend this place. It has a lovely atmosphere.

Popped into town on a bank holiday Monday, the sun was shining so sat outside. I had home baked ham, egg and chips which was lovely. I've been to this pub on numerous occasions, the food is always of excellent standard, atmosphere is lovely and the varied menu of either tapas or main meal is good. Sunday lunch is rather special too.

I go to the Black Swan regularly and it has the best tapas in and around Belper for sure! The food is always delicious and it's in a really relaxing atmosphere. Always does a good job on the Market Place at the food festivals too - can't fault it!

What can we say, amazing again. We went on the 8th August for a birthday meal, our small group was four adults, and the food was brilliant. We had different starters which were truly delicious, for the main we had a couple of the same dish and a couple of different ones, and again the food was hot and beautiful. We have never yet had a bad meal here, and we would definitely recommend giving this place a go. We tell all our friends and family about it, friendly staff and great food what more could you ask.

Visited this pub during lunchtime break on business trip to belper and what a find. Buzzing atmosphere and warm friendly feel. Extensive menus to cater for all tastes. I may pop back this evening for z meal as I didn't have time lunchtime. I love pubs that are rustic and this certainly is in a great way . Fully recommend s visit

Myself and 18 friends attended a private function here in July 2017.The buffet was awesome at £10 a head and even catered for 1 gluten free individual.The bar staff was amazing and helpful as it was a class school reunion and we took our own music from the 1970's and nothing was to much trouble for them in playing for us.Would use them again and recommend to family and friends.

Called here with a friend on a day out to visit Belper pubs with a view to lunch. I had looked for the online menu but they don't do one though the pictures looked interesting. My surprise was what they call Little bites [tapas?] selection of over 20 items which during the week have special deals. For two of us I ordered 5 items from the selection for £16] and it proved plenty for a lunch time. The cask beer was good with a couple of unusual labels. On top of that the staff were helpful and friendly. Great! We sat outside in the sunshine so I can't comment of the internal atmosphere. Can't wait to go back and try.

We didn't know this pub at all as we had never been to Belper before. But we met friends there for Sunday lunch. Lovely, friendly staff and excellent Sunday roast. Highly recommended!

My husband and I met up with two friends for a catch-up over a leisurely lunch. As always as we are not local to the area, I checked on Trip Advisor for suggestions and liked the sound of The Black Swan. It certainly didn't disappoint from the 'meet and greet' by the pub dog through to a good selection of beers and very reasonably priced menu. The food was freshly cooked and we all thoughoughly enjoyed our choices. We spent a very leisurely two hours there and would certainly return.

Visited Monday night, we was just to late for the 7 o'clock meal deal so went for the tapas menu again. Glad we did, food was spot on and so was the service. The women who serves us is always pleasant.

Met up with a friend for a once in a while catch up. The Black Swan ws an excellent find. We found a cosy corner, were extremely well looked after, never felt hurried. Choices excellent especially good value early evening. Food was delicious - so we just had to have dessert and coffee. Great atmosphere and convenient parking

We had a lovely meal here, had a few tapas dishes to start, really really nice, followed by scampi and ham eggs chips, the mains was really nice pub food, not massive portions but nice, will def return soon, friendly staff too

Ideal for pre cinema snacking, the Tapas menu is great value for money. Our group sampled quite a few of the dishes, all of which were very generous portions. I personally loved the halloumi with sweet chilli sauce and the homemade hummus with pitta. The jalapeño fondue was a little too hot for us, so I'd only suggest ordering it if you love your food hot, hot, hot!Certainly worth a try next time you are in Belper.

Love this little local pub. The staff are friendly. The Ham ,egg, and chips are amazing . They do tapas , but we haven't tried that yet, will have to return to do that .All in all a lovely place with great food.
