The Black Swan in Eden

Had the pleasure of eating here 3 times in a week when staying close to the village. When you walk through the door, it was like walking into the most perfect English pub you could imagine. I liken it to the pub in "the holiday" film. So cosy & welcoming. My favourite pint of the week was an Old Smithy Porter at 4.7%. Our first meal blew me away. Lamb with minted peas, a wee lamb pie, some fancy potatoes & gravy. My wife was very happy with the sea bream & a big crab cake. Desert was a chocolate torte large enough to share the guilt. Complements to the chef & staff. Try the specials as he likes to try new meals to test the lucky guests. The cheese suffle was ridiculously good as a starter. Book a table early if you don't want to miss out & enjoy. We had all our meals in the dog friendly bar.

Stayed here for my partners birthday, from start to finish it was an amazing experience! Sharmain was our main point of contact throughout our stay and she is a credit to the hotel and to the industry in general, very warm approachable with great customer service. All front of house staff were excellent! Room was lovely with four poster bed, open fire with a huge bathroom, all very warm and cosy. The ambience in the bar and dining areas is perfect, very homely and cosy. Food was first class, we had booked a dinner bed and breakfast package, evening meal we had the cheese soufflé and steak tartar,both beautiful, for main the duck and pork dishes, again both amazing, rounded off with cheese and biscuits and a nice glass of port. Breakfast the next morning simply a taste sensation, loved the treacle bread that came with my salmon, avocado and poached eggs. An absolute 10/10 experience. Sharmain is an asset to the business. We will be back

Fancy a hike in quiet, unspoilt hills away from the crowds in the lakes? Then put your feet up by the fire in the black Swan. This place is a hidden gem off the main track- excellent ales, a warm welcome and put your feet up by a roaring fire!

First time visiting and won't be the last. All staff where amazing which complimented the fantastic food. We enjoyed it so much we booked the last room available for new years eve. As we only live in Kendal we will be visiting regularly, you wont be disappointed here.

Beautiful little gem in a lovely secluded spot. Our second visit here & once again it was superb from start to finish. Nothing was too much trouble & our host for dinner (Charmaine) was simply charming. Our room (15) was stunning. 4 poster bed, massive bathroom & a beautiful open fire, just perfect ♥️ Couldn’t recommend this place more highly!!

Visited on a Sunday evening. The service was impeccable, attentive but not intrusive. Gravadlax starter was excellent and my wife’s pate was superb. Our mains were a pork loin special with a black pudding sausage roll. Absolutely delicious. I forced myself to indulge in the chocolate and raspberry dessert and I wasn’t disappointed.

I would like to summarise this review in three ways. Firstly we had food that was absolutely fantastic, it was really well presented and tasted amazingly. The menu was big enough to give choice and the quality was the highlight. Secondly we were disturbed by a large amount of flies that spoilt the atmosphere maybe it was the humid weather but it appeared nothing was in place to deal with them. Thirdly the craft beer on sale seemed to have no body at all, you may say we should have chosen wine to compliment the food but I like a good pint of beer and I was disappointed with the choice. I have given 5 stars because it was all about the food which was above and beyond.

Did not live up to recommendations. The menu was very limited, no lighter lunch options, and overpriced. Some menu options required ordering a side dish of potatoes as extra, only chips available at £6 per portion. Pesto and cauliflower mac n cheese was particularly tasteless and disappointing at £19! Basic steak and chips came at £32 with only a couple of onion rings and a sprinkling of watercress as garnish and was very average. There are much better places for lunch in the area so we won't be returning.

Lovely staff friendly and professional. Starter was lovely a scotch egg made of rice with a curry sauce. Friends had southern fried mushrooms. Very different and very lovely. My main was a let down. Sea bream . Beautifully cooked but completely overwhelmed by a soup of tandoori sauce. Desserts had way too much gelatine in them. You could have bounced the pannacotta off the wall

The breakfasts were as close to perfect as you can get! We do a lot of long-distance walking and have experienced many B&B breakfasts - this was one of the best! Excellent porridge and very well cooked variations on the full-English, all served by a friendly and helpful housekeeper. (we also had supper here one night, and this was excellent as well)

We booked for lunch and the meal was excellent and well presented. The ambience and service was very friendly and accommodating. Would highly recommend a visit

Lovely dinner with a great atmosphere, customer service.. Roast beef was cooked to perfection cabbage was tasty as was the carrot mash. Wonderful day seven of us eat with out being rushed out of the door.. ohh and the rice pudding with blackcurrant and almonds .. all I can say is well done 👍 to all at the black Swann will definitely be back.

This was our third visit and second stay. Staff are exemplary as is food. Great to see local beer at the bar. Lovely fresh bedding and gorgeous Arran toiletries. And to top it all there are great walks on the doorstep

Professional and friendly staff. We only had a snack and drinks but the food was good value, well presented and served promptly. Would definitely recommend and visit again next time we are in the area for a more substantial meal. Excellent Covid precautions also.

Visited at short notice tonight with 3 family members and the welcome and food were 5 star. We all ordered different meals so we could try each others dishes and every mouthfull was delicious. Went to see the head chef after the meal and let him know how much we all enjoyed the food and the setting. They all pull together as a team and this is conveyed through a fantastic dining experience, will be back !

Just beautiful food, delicious, cooked with thought and consideration, and by people who really know what they are doing.Lancashire cheese soufflé with leeks followed by shoulder of lamb with mash, broccoli and crispy onions. Chicken liver parfait with treacle bread before chicken Kiev made with wild garlic and celeriac remoulade. A chocolate, honeycomb and orange dessert and you’re well and truly fed. Staff were all great, there when you need them but discreet at other times.We ate in the dining rooms but can only assume the meals in the bar are just as delicious. Lovely decor to match the great food, well thought out and executed.Can’t believe I’ve never been before but we shall definitely return and recommend The Black Swan to anyone. Go there - you will definitely not be disappointed.

Been here many times with my partner and our dog Bella. We always sit in the beer garden by the river. The service is always good. I always order a pot of herbal tea. The choice is very good and it always comes with a piece of delicious fudge. My partner usually has one of the draught ales. Always a fantastic way to spend a couple of hours relaxing.

We had a fantastic meal during our overnight stay at the black swan. The pub/bar area is extremely dog friendly and very accommodating. We had cocktails, drinks and 3 courses and everything we received was excellent. I can see why they have their 2 rosettes. The staff were very friendly and the service was just as good as the food. Will definitely be back again soon.

I've just spent 2 nights at this wonderful Inn as a post lockdown treat - and what a treat it was! The food was fabulous, the chef is clearly very talented. All the staff were lovely and welcoming and the bedroom was very comfortable. Will certainly return.

A real pre Christmas treat during all the restrictions. Suite stunning and very comfortable, food amazing (a very talented young chef), staff very friendly and so nice to enjoy some luxury as well as being situated in a stunning part of Cumbria with scenic walks. Thank you.

De principio a fin, cada plato se preparó con amor y se hizo a la perfección. La decoración rezumaba daño y sencillez del norte y la comida era exquisita pero no pretenciosa. Pedí la sopa de hongos y superó por completo mis expectativas. El pan era increíble por decir lo menos. Y el besugo también estaba bien hecho, pero mi favorito era la sopa de champiñones para ser justos. Definitivamente regresaré.

Estábamos volviendo a visitar este lugar después de tener una gran estadía allí el año pasado, así que nos decepcionó un poco ver que parecían tener nada más que un servicio de labios para los regs de covid: el personal no usaba máscaras y la yurta en la que nos alojamos estaba llena de cojines mullidos y bits y bobs que posiblemente no todos hayan visto desinfectados entre los clientes. Cuando mencioné mis preocupaciones sobre el hecho de que el personal del restaurante no usara máscaras y la necesidad de que se inclinen sobre los clientes para dejar platos calientes, las chicas dijeron '¿es la primera vez que sales desde COVID? Espero que no haya entendido lo condescendiente que era, pero creo que sí. . . . . la yurta era preciosa, pero no me suscribí a la ducha al aire libre y al apestoso retrete de compost rodeado de maleza crujiente y arrastrada. También agregaría que el menú era mucho más peatonal que el año pasado y solo puedo esperar que esta sea una situación temporal.

Comimos aquí hace unas noches en una escala en la caminata C 2 C. Lo recomendó la casera de nuestro be & be. Guau, comida excepcional. No he probado comida tan buena en mucho tiempo. Mi esposa y yo tuvimos 3 campos y cada uno fue fantástico. Nuestra primera cena desde el cierre y valió la pena la espera. El personal es muy atento tan pronto como entras, desinfectante en todas partes, sistema unidireccional en su lugar, mesas de comedor bien espaciadas, nos sentimos muy seguros y cómodos todo el tiempo. La comida era excelente, recomiendo el plato de paté de pollo vivo y el cordero. No pude manejar el postre: grandes porciones. Toda la experiencia fue un festín para las papilas gustativas, diferentes sabores que complementaban cada bocado, ¡Tan delicioso, bellamente presentado y me gustaría poder cocinar así! Tenemos mucha suerte de ser bastante locales, así que volveremos pronto para probar el resto del menú. Un gran agradecimiento a todo el personal y al chef, por supuesto. ¡No puedo recomendarlo lo suficiente!

Comimos aquí recientemente de camino al Lake District y no nos decepcionó. El servicio, la comida y la bienvenida fue genial. Nos sentamos afuera y había mucho espacio en el jardín de la cerveza para que la gente se distanciara socialmente. Nuestra comida fue deliciosa y sin duda volveremos de nuevo en nuestro próximo viaje a los lagos.

Llegamos a cenar temprano el domingo por la noche, servida con prontitud, comida fabulosa (mousse de cangrejo, besugo, mousse de lavanda y melocotón). Una pequeña falla, después de haber pedido inicialmente que la salsa tandouri se proporcionara 'al lado', me dijeron que estaría 'alrededor del borde del plato que acepté' siempre que mi comida no estuviera nadando en salsa '. Cuando llegó la comida, la salsa se había vertido como si fuera una salsa, lo que significaba que no podía limitar la cantidad que tenía. Decepcionado, pero no tanto como para pedir otra comida.

Nos quedamos a pasar la noche en el cisne negro y teníamos una mesa reservada para la cena. Tomamos unas copas antes de cenar junto al río donde tienen algunas yurtas como parte del hotel. Después de tomar nuestra mesa a la luz de las velas en la ventana, revisamos el menú pequeño, pero armaremos el menú. Nuestros entrantes fueron paté de hígado de pollo y tarta de queso de cabra con ensalada de tomate tradicional marinado. Como platos principales elegimos cordero con coliflor asada y aderezo de pasas y piñones y cerdo glaseado con mostaza con col con puré de mantequilla y morcilla. Todos los platos estaban deliciosos y bien presentados. No tuvimos postres y, en retrospectiva, solo hubiéramos tenido los platos principales ya que las raciones son generosas. El personal fue excelente durante toda nuestra estancia. Lo único que podríamos cambiar fue comer en el encantador bar en lugar del restaurante, que también era muy agradable.

Cenamos en el Black Swan el miércoles por la noche, aprovechando el plan de "comer fuera" del gobierno. Viviendo bastante localmente, hemos cenado allí muchas veces antes y siempre hemos disfrutado de la comida y el ambiente.Tuvimos que esperar en la puerta de entrada antes de que nos llevaran a nuestra mesa en el restaurante, después de habernos desinfectado las manos. Mirando hacia el área de la 'barra trasera', parecía muy concurrida con clientes, visitantes y perros. Nos alarmamos y nos decepcionó que la disponibilidad de asientos en el restaurante (que no es demasiado grande) no parecía haberse reducido y, por lo tanto, nos encontramos sentados a menos de un metro de los demás en mesas contiguas. La mayoría de los lugares donde hemos cenado en las últimas semanas han reducido drásticamente la cantidad de mesas de comedor para permitir mucho espacio entre los grupos de clientes.Teniendo en cuenta que la mayoría de los comensales esa noche eran residentes y visitantes de otras partes del país (y de hecho quizás del extranjero), era algo preocupante estar tan cerca de extraños durante un par de horas.En otros establecimientos de comida que hemos visitado desde que se alivió el cierre, el personal de servicio ha tenido que cubrirse la cara. Esto no estaba en vigor en el Black Swan.Los lunes a miércoles, naturalmente, estarán muy ocupados durante agosto mientras continúe el programa. Aunque disfrutamos de nuestra comida y el servicio fue bueno, debemos informar que nos sentimos muy incómodos el miércoles por la noche y que no querremos regresar hasta que regresen días mejores.

Comí aquí con otras 3 personas el miércoles por la noche. Nuestra comida fue bastante decepcionante. El besugo a la parrilla con hinojo era encantador pero una salsa tandoori lo arruinó. Uno de mis amigos comió un buen trozo de cordero, pero nuevamente los sabores que lo acompañaban simplemente no funcionaron. El servicio comenzó bien, pero disminuyó. Lástima que la última vez que comí aquí (Navidad de 2019) la comida era mucho mejor.

Whilst staying in the area we managed to book for a table of 14 for a family celebration. We where seated in a lovely separate room (great as we are a rather loud bunch). Everyone absolutely loved thier meals. Especially the cheese scones! Service was brilliant, they even arranged the decorations and a cake for us. We would recommend this place to anyone going to the area and we will be back ourselves! Thank you for looking after us.

Food was fantastic! Scott’s doing a great job, however service was a little lacklustre, waiting staff didn’t seem to have much personality about them, just the basic “how was everything” when clearing the table. No check back on our main course and weren’t offered any extra drinks either. But the lady behind the bar was lovely, chatty and just friendly to be honest! Expected better service to accompany the rosette standard food. Would return though!

This is a place to go for a fine dining experience. The portions are not large, but they are well presented, and have a lovely combination of tastes. Service was good and well informed,and the atmosphere was relaxed,

There was only one place we were going to go for our first meal out post lock down, The Black Swan. Amazing menu, food cooked to perfection, great staff and on the whole another lovely night out with friends.

Just spent a couple of nights at the Black Swan post lockdown and it could not have gone better . Very friendly, great accommodation and food and all relaxed given the post lockdown situation we all find ourselves in . Also 100% dog friendly too , so all in all a great place for a few nights away

Had a delicious meal on Sat 4th July, the first night restaurants and pubs were open after lockdown. Food was fantastic, wine lovely and chilled and staff were exceptional in their service. Lots of hand sanitiser around and social distancing strictly kept to. Would really recommend for a date night or a holiday on the outskirts of the Lake District.

This was another very pleasant couple of nights, stopping on the way to Scotland and back. The Black Swan is a refuge, decorated attractively, nicely warm, and a welcome oasis of individuality. The staff are all friendly, helpful and efficient, and the chef a real gem. We loved our two nights' stay, with a treat of a dinner each evening and a great breakfast each morning. On the first night we enjoyed the Chicken Liver Paté, the Celeriac Rosti and the cheese board; on the second evening we had the Double-baked Souffle, the Lamb and the Fish Pie and the Chocolate Slice. Delightful dishes!We loved it and we'll be back.

Una excelente selección de cereales, buffet frío y casi cualquier combinación de un desayuno tradicional cumbriano que pueda pedir.Louise Dinnes y todo su personal fueron amables y serviciales, lamentamos quedarnos solo una noche. Our annual visit was so good we came back the next day. Good beers from the Region - recommend Ennerdale Blond. Service good and very friendly. The food is exceptionally well done. The pub deserves all the accolades it has received and the chef deserves a huge mention. All the meals we had were perfection, the puddings to die for. Well done - congratulations.

We had a really excellent meal last weekend, the service was great and the food was fantastic, it is no doubt towards the top end of pricing but it is more than worth it. We ate in the restaurant, it was a little quiet but it was a wet sunday evening, the pub/ bar may be preferable to some but either way its worth visiting.The haddock scotch egg, venison tartae, Vension and Guinea fowl mains were highlights - the deserts were equally brilliant. On a par with some michelin star restaurant we have been too.Excellent

Many times have we passed the signs for Ravenstonedale on the A685 between Kirby Stephen and the M6 junction at Tebay. Last week, on the way to a short break in the Lake District, we decided to go and have a look, and in the middle of the village discovered the Black Swan. It didn't look open, but the sign proclaimed that food was served all day, so in we went, to join diners already eating. A few small bar areas and a couple of dining rooms, all very cozy and welcoming. There are several menus available, none extensive, so you can assume that the food isn't straight out of the freezer. And what surprising food! My cod was served on a bed of crushed artichoke, and my apple crumble came as a perfect souffle, all very inventive and extremely tasty. Washed down with a couple of pints of Black Sheep bitter, the ideal lunch.

I visited the Black Swan while staying in Ravenstonedale for the weekend with five friends.

We visited The Black Swan on a Sunday evening. We have known the pub for many years and, although not frequent visitors, it is one of our favourites, especially as we live only 20 minutes away!

We were recommended to The Black Swan both by the owner of the cottage in Castle Brough in which we were staying and by friends who live locally. It may not be the least inexpensive restaurant but worth the price for quality of food, service and atmosphere.

A lovely elegant bar with fantastic food. Very dog friendly, and equally good customer service for us two humans. The menu is a delight to read, let alone eat. I had cauliflower soup with chorizo and seared sweetcorn. It was divine. My husband enjoyed his sandwich of smoked haddock (think kedgerie style) topped with poached egg on ciabatta. We will return to eat dinner!!

Stoped to have a look at the menu at 5.15 as we were staying nearby in another wee hotel . The menu looked lovely and they started serving at 5.30 so decided to stay. The food was fantastic and very interesting , I love to cook but would never have thought of putting what was in my dinner together seafood sauce to die for ( by the way it was the seabream ) my husband mentioned that it was my birthday and they came out with a plate with happy birthday done in chocolate sauce and a candle, So lovely thank you the black swan. Pricy but so worth it

Visited with 2 dogs & were made very welcome with a nice table in the bar.

We stayed at the Black Swan for two nights. The food is great and well priced, but the room was very tired and needs updating to reflect the price. The walls and doors are very thin and you can easily hear your neighbours. We mentioned this to the hotel manager, but did not receive an apology - only a comment that the rooms are due to be redecorated soon and our thoughts would be passed onto the owners. We didn’t hear anything else. So in summary - definitely worth stopping by for food, but I wouldn’t stay overnight until the redecoration works are carried out.

Walked here from a campsite about a mile away. The beer was good as were the pork pies and cheese from the bar. A gem of a place.

A gem of an inn, that you just dream of finding, and once found you want to visit again! Great food!

We dined here on the recommendation of our hotel and were delighted with the experience. It's extremely popular and there were not many time slots available when we called up to book (on the day) but we were very glad that we shifted our schedule around a bit to squeeze in a dinner. I think it's advisable to book in advance, especially over the summer months.

Paid a brief visit for Lunch and was pleased with the result. Friendly and efficient service with quality food that was reasonably priced and well presented. Enjoyed our brief visit.

Really good customer service, made to feel very welcome. Dined in the bar area as we had our dog with us - she was made to feel very welcome too.

The service was lovely,staff were welcoming and very accommodating,going out of their way for us. Sadly in our opinion the food was substandard. I had the cod with prawns,orzo,samphire and smoked red pepper. It was lacking in taste and I found it very bland. My husband opted for the rib eye steak which he asked to be cooked as well done. When it was presented it was not well done so my husband very politely and discreetly mentioned to the waiter. The waiter took it away and later returned it (same steak) but it was still not well done,clearly pink still. When asked if my meal was ok I said in very sorry but I'm finding it bland,but was told well you've eaten some of it and it's usually a very popular dish. I was told that because I'd eaten the majority of it (NB the cod us the size of a chocolate brownie with 3 prawns on top) this would not be taken off the bill (I hadn't asked for it to be ) . When the bill arrived , despite my husband not being able to eat his meal and it having been sent back twice,this was charged for at the full price. Our children had the adult fish and chips which they are without complaint as they didn't want to ruin the evening,but that they later advised tasted like cardboard. Such a shame, especially as when we'd booked we had said we were really looking forward to it,as it was a treat to celebrate our Silver Wedding Anniversary and my husband's 50th. I then advised I would pay £7 for the cod which is all I thought it worth (taking into account the lack of taste and the inconvenience,not to mention the rude comment about my having eaten the majority) More than happy to pay for a decent meal,but sadly in our opinion,this wasn't of that calibre.

Talented chefs producing amazing food backed up by great serving staff in an idyllic location. Best meal I’ve had since I can remember. The menu changes seasonally but on this night we ate the soufflé and pate started then duck and pork belly mains followed by two very rich desserts. So pleased we came here, recommend you try it too.

Called in on spec for lunch on our way home. Gem of a place serving fantastic lunchtime menu. Went for the lamb hotdog which was massive and tasted amazing.

Visited for lunch on the recommendation of friends and we weren't disappointed.

We always have dinner here when visiting Ravenstonedale. We enjoyed our meal and staff pleasant but think it has gone up market with prices since last year.

This is rearly well prepared food with top class presentation and efficient service. Had to visit twice on our 4 day trip to the area. Fully recommended.
