The Black Orchid @ The John Baird in Haringey

This place gets a big thumbs up from me - finely balanced and authentic thai food and one of the best in the area. Good service and reasonable prices too.

It's now at the Furlong Pub, at 89 Colney Hatch Lane, N10 1LR, so a bus ride away from where it used to be. Just as good though, friendly, good food and reasonable prices.

El primer sábado del mes es un concierto de jazz gratuito en este pub. Como está en el jardín hay muchos fumadores, así que si no te gusta esto, ten cuidado. Sin amplificación, por lo que es mejor acercarse si desea escuchar la música por encima de la clientela que habla.La cerveza Black Sheep Brewery es muy buena, mucho mejor que la Courage mejor amarga.Buena noche fuera, volveremos.

Apareció en The John Baird (estúpidamente caro, no durará mucho), pero resulta interesante que sea propiedad de las mismas personas que The Furlong en Conyhatch Lane, I. E. Punch Inns. Nice pub and garden with good Thai food. I always go for the weeping tiger and jasmine rice, but the pad Thai and curry is also pretty good.

The service is very poor. And the prices for the prices are VERY expensive. But the food is very good and tasty. Although I did miss tofu in the vegetable options.

I have been here for food many times before and it’s always been great, but unfortunately on this visit the service was really poor. We waited 50 minutes for our main meal to arrive. At about 30 minutes we asked about where our meal was and kept being promised it was just coming. No one apologised and no compensation was given. The food was delicious as usual, but felt really disappointed by the service. It’s such a shame as I love this place and love coming here, but feel really let down in this occasion. I had brought my partners parents here especially for a nice meal, and just feel like we could have had an apology, especially as we seemed quite upset at the time.

I popped in for a pint and chat with my friend and found that there was a blue grass band on. It had a great sound that I’d expect from Louisiana . A good selection of ales and beers added to my evening entertainment

En todos mis viajes a Londres no había visto todavía un partido de fútbol en un pub. Fuimos al John Baird. Nos llevó un amigo local y la experiencia fue muy buena. Tiene varias pantallas de televisión por lo que lo vimos sin problemas a pesar de que estaba muy concurrido. Había un ambiente muy bueno y respetuoso. Además el pub está muy bien para tomar una pinta (o varias) y comer algo.

This is a restaurant at back with a great traditional pub at front in a relatively affluent area of london which meant locals and staff were very friendly. Drinks well priced for London and lots of screen to watch epl on.

We didn't eat - but we will soon as the restaurant looked great. Nice to see that the restaurant hasn't taken over the pub. Those needing to nurse a swift pint of well kept ale can find ample space to relax and take in the atmosphere - of which there is no shortage.

Este era mi favorito pub local cuando vivía en Londres. Vine aquí para bebidas y excelente comida tailandesa, mi marido y yo todavía recuerdo 2 años desde que cambiamos de Londres. Espero Keith el director está haciendo bien y que el negocio está en auge. Después de mi casi 19 años en Londres, me pueden encontrar la cara B de un pretencioso milla, y este pub era un lugar acogedor, casi como en casa. Su vino vine en los meses fríos del invierno yo estaba empacando mis cosas y contemplando el gran cambio en la vida y en las tardes tranquilas son mis mejores recuerdos de mi antigua casa en Muswell Hill.

No nonsense pub, nice outdoor area in the old walled back yard with heaters and a smoking area. Not too pricey, bearing in mind it's central London.

This is a non-pretentious restaurant serving fresh and fragrant food. Thai food and Asian-inspired dishes. I have eaten here multiple times in a row and tried out a different dishes, every time the food was very fresh and made to order. The fish I ordered once and was overcooked. The staff is friendly and helpful. The Pub attached is lovely with big chairs to hang out at the end of the day. If you decide for dinner at 'Black Orchid', you won't be disappointed.

Excellent prices, nice intimate area to eat. Staff are very friendly and food comes in a reasonable time. They do a great lunch time special which is excellent price. My favorite restaurant and I’ve tried many Thai places.

Fue una noche fría y triste sábado. . . Francamente estaba muy atractiva, pero de los que fuimos. . Nada reservado y Muswell Hill en su mayoría ocupados. Nos quedamos con la Orquídea Negra en el John Baird. Buen pollo al curry verde tailandés con arroz. Veo comentarios en precio, pero en esta zona de £8 por un curry y 3 libras por arroz, además de bebidas del bar es razonable cuando una hamburguesa es normalmente al norte de 10 libras. La comida fue perfecto en una noche fría. . . y luego sin tener que desafiar el tiempo entramos al pub por una pinta. . . Disfrutamos de una. opción local. Personal muy amable y servicial, volveré y diversificar en el menú. La comida alrededor de £17 parecía merece la pena ir.

Me encantó todo lo que caliente la comida rápida estaba buenísimo. Genial poder sentarse fuera. Sólo una pequeña queja encontramos algunas de las salsas para sumergirse con los campos de sólo un poco de aguado (dulce frío) volveremos pronto.

Más de 16 libras por una ronda de 3 bebidas, sé que estaban en Muswell Hill, pero incluso eso me sorprendió. Interior bonito, y pantallas de bueno para el deporte.

Si te apetece un poco de sabor a la hora del almuerzo, este es el lugar para ir. Aunque yo estoy bastante seguro de la comida es buena en cualquier momento del día, pero para mí un tiempo almuerzo especial es justo lo que necesitas. Me prepara para el resto del día.

Was slightly apprehensive about Restaurant being in a Pub but was very pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was very well presented with nice decor. The food was very good, wine was acceptable and the price was reasonable. The staff could have been a little more attentive though as the restaurant was only half full and it was quite difficult to attract their attention for service.

Really really good Thai food here, very authentic. Unpretentious, good value and full of flavour. Masamun and jungle curries are recommended. As is the green Thai curry and Tom Yum soup. Have had most of the dishes here and only one that was disappointing was the papaya salad. Stick with stir fry or curry and u can't go wrong.

This Thai restaurant is part of the John Baird pub, serving delicious, authentic food.It should be better known as it is the only one of it's kind in Muswell Hill, at a very reasonable price and a menu with a range of dishes to chose from.

I really enjoy eating in here, good atmosphere, service has always been great and you can sit in the pub or the more serene restaurant environment, definetley recommended.

Went there for lunch today. Food was good but service was poor. We had finished our meal and the plates were still sitting on our table for over 15 mins. I eventually couldn't look at them any longer so moved them to the empty table next to us. There were only 2 of us eating and there were no more than 10 people in the pub so there was no excuse for not clearing the table. I think the restaurant staff all left at 4pm do the clearing up was left to the bar staff.

We have been so many times here and we fins this is the beat thai right after Thailand. We pick a random dish every time and we are so glad that every single dish is as delicious as what we remember last time. The curries are excellent. The weeping tiger, the papaya salad and the tamarind duck are our favourite. Excellent service, excellent food

A simple, we will be closing the kitchen in 5 minutes so please have your orders ready would have been nice. 3 of us for food, gave us 1 menu and stood there the entire time while we we browsed the menu. Needless to say I didn't order anything because I was being rushed and I'm writing this review while my friends are eating. I won't be back

My boyfriend and I have visited this place twice now and have not been let down. I'm shocked to see the bad comments as I can't fault the place. Yes, the staff are a little odd but not rude. They give good portion sizes and good value for money. Will be returning.

This is one of the few pubs that do Thai food that I have been disappointed with. I had the chefs special steamed cod, which was served tepid. My partner had the jungle curry which she said had too much salt, and not much heat in the curry. We ate in the pub as opposed to the restaurant, and received the full table treatment which I think was a bit over the top, each meal was served on a separate serving dish, which did'nt help keep the food hot.The main reason I'm not returning is the price, you have to order your rice seperately, which at main courses at £9 to £12, the rice at £2.50 makes the whole meal very expensive.

Came here with my mum on a Saturday evening. We were taken straight to our table and given a menu, we could choose where we wanted to sit. It was a little warm so would have been nice to have some windows open as it was such a lovely evening. We started with the prawn and pork dumplings which were lovely and than my mum chose the green curry and I went for chicken stir fry with Thai basil and chilli which was very nice, we shared a steamed rice and vegetables in oyster sauce. The portions are good. You can also have the set menus if there are a lot of you. The staff are friendly and attentive.

Avoid this restaurant and spend your money elsewhere. Been a few times, never been overly impressed but on last visit they got the order completely wrong. Rude staff and a complete nonchalant attitude. It's not the best of atmosphere's in there. Plus it's v pricey. There's much better Thai's in the area like Nid Ting in Archway

Selama saya main di Inggris selama 17 hari saya 3 kali mampir di resto ini hehehe...rada banyak memang. Tom yum nya enak dan bikin nagih, lalu karena saya orang Indonesia pengennya makan nasi, spicy Thai fried rice nya di sini recommend banget. Pad thai nya juga enak, green curry nya juga enak. Pelayanannya ok, yang punya sepertinya orang Thailand asli, begitu juga waiternya. Next visit ke sini lagi pastinya...

Food was very nice and served quickly. It's best to order alcohol as it's much better value, if you order drinks like lemonade you will get a glass full of ice with just a small squirt of lemonade and they will charge £3.25 for this, works out to more than £10 a pint!

If you go down to the john Baird beer garden today your in for a big surprise, your nice bright dress or light blue jeans will be black as a boot, when staff are told they don't give a hoot. Me blood was boiling, as the staff were smiling, "ah sure its the road works outside", sure if they knew, a mop and bucket would do, but no, customer's back sides will clean the place, its there saving grace. The beer was chilled but I was not thrilled, customer service my posteria, the place is a farce. Simple " oh sorry would do" but seems they have no clue. We won't be back, a dirty back side is no craic. Thanks for nothing, dry cleaning bill to follow. Shocking.

I visit here about once a month with my friend who has a guide dog. We always get a nice welcome and good service & the food is good value for money. We eat in the comfortable bar and enjoy the interesting real ales available as well.

Urgently needs a refurb. Slot machines compete with several tv's to see which can make most noise. Poor wine selection. Zombie like staff. Better off going somewhere else in M Hill

Loved the refurb...good atmosphere. Firat time there Ordered duck but was very disappointed and sent it back. Lovely girl brought us another dish on the house which was great plus chilli squid best ever. They turned a bad experience into good. Fab customer service and we def will be back. But wont order duck!

Last night we had dinner here, again... and will be back again.We love to go out during the week when it is a bit calmer and you can pick your own table but I know this little gem fills up very nicely during the weekend. I had my favourite starter, the dumplings, followed by the duck red curry with coconut rice. Plenty, yummie and good value for money.The walk home was just perfect to let it all digest a bit but we both had a very nice dinner again.

Lovely basic restaurant attached to the pub but you can also order and eat food in the pub area. Really good food but some dishes can be on the salty side. Service good and very polite.

just got home from visiting this place and have to say it was AWFUL. I started with the sesame prawn toast and no prawn paste,....not inside or on top...just toasted bread, no flavour whatsoever, i followed this with the papaya salad....shredded carrots,lettuce white cabbage and a horrible vinegar sauce.I had the beef massumum for mains with coconut rice, well actually rice with sweetcorn no coconut to be seenor tasted. The mussumum sauce was tired tasteless and inedible. My partner had the young green thai peppercorn stir fry, sound delicious, however it looked like a sunday dinner leftover! a liitle bit of broccoli, onions and carrots....and salt, loads and loads of salt! Not as advertised as green thai peppercorns,spicy thai chilli paste,garlic,red and green peppers. We both failed to finish our dinners and just paid and left. It seems this restaurant has not heard of sweet thai basil, lemongrass and all the great aromatic ingredients that make thai food so fragrant and refreshing, instead we were serve leftover sunday lunch staples mixed with shop bought sauces,fust full of salt and additives.

Dropped in here on a Sunday night, got to say well worth a visit. Quality of food excellent, very friendly staff and fantastic ambiance. Really enjoyable evening will definitely be back.

Yesterday evening we went for a meal at the Black Orchid - we have been there previously on a number of occasions for both lunch and dinner - but I I wonder if they have changed their staff or perhaps have taken on staff who was not able to understand. We ordered four starters and main dishes - sadly the main dishes came in first! One bowl of rice between four people (we ordered two) The restaurant was not that particularly busy It also was difficult for the waiter to know what a Bitter Lemon drink was (but he got it right in the end). The food was so-so - not the usual we have enjoyed in the past. So, it will be a long time before we go there again.

I happened to have dinner there yesterday totally by chance. I was looking for a thai restaurant in the area with a friend and we had barely noticed The black orchid when passing by. The place is welcoming and clean, it was not busy at all. Service was decent and had a good timing. We had spring rolls for starter and they were alright, maybe portions a bit too small, but the mains where outstanding, my friend had the duck and kept telling me how good that was, while I had vegetarian noodles, good as well. Portions were big and the price fair, really good value for what we had. I highly reccomend it.

We visited The John Baird for a drink and then ate at The Black Orchid. The ambience and service were great, the food delicious and the company (my sister and elder son visiting from Sheffield) excellent. We shared a mixed starter for 2 and a portion of spareribs and then enjoyed Thai green chicken curry, a Thai duck dish with Chinese leaves in a delicious sauce and a Thai Chicken with Jasmine rice and a Papaya salad. It arrived promptly and we all enjoyed it. Portion size was just right.

Friendly, clean, great food, nice atmosphere...... What more could you want?? This restaurant is really a hidden gem (The papaya salad is the best i've tasted!!)

Service and food were average- tasted shop bought! The wine was nice until the bar fly that had joined us for our meal drowned in it.The restaurant and pub, to which it is attached, and felt like it needed a good clean and some love.

On collecting order told total price was more than calculated off Menu price list on the restaurant website menu.Mentioned this and was given printed Menu with "correct" prices.THEY REFUSED TO HONOUR THE WEBSITE PRICE LIST.Because the Thai food was specifically wanted by my sister in law I paid the price.Ordinarily I would have rejected the increased price and left without it and gone elsewhere.On a pleasing note - my sister in law enjoyed the food.

It's got a nice eating area attached to the pub. The food isn't bad but a little over priced. There are better thai places. Best to stick to the pub

Me and my friend visited this restaurant/pub on a Sunday night as it was recommended to her by ex work colleagues who worked down the road. The service was very friendly and attentive however when we went it was empty. We had booked but it became apparent that it was not necessary. There was a large selection of food and lots to chose from. We ordered the Malbec wine and it went really well with our food. Will visit again

I've been to The Black Orchid for lunch on Saturday. The place was busy with a nice buzzing atmosphere. The service was fast and attentive (I like the costumes waitresses were wearing, although looks a bit weird in the pub, but suits the restaurant). The food was yummy! We had a special duck and steamed king prawns with glass noodles.... Nicely presented, good portion sizes and tasted great! after lunch we stayed for a bit longer in the pub, which boys were busy watching and discussing football i've occupied myself with a girls mag :) Planning to go back for sure!

Came on a saturday with friends .Let down by rude and unhelpful bar staff who didnt seem to care or know what was going on.

Muswell Hill is packed with places to eat. from Mediterranean Cafe type places, (too many & packed with yuppie types) to traditional eateries of Standard type to be found in London.Actual Pub types are few & far between. and although the John Baird has the TV & Sport environment, "as desired by the many regulars" it also has a fine rear Patio area and a more quiet side section of bar that also houses the Restaurant.Good Beer selection of Real Ales and the Thai Food is Exceptional ! My Mild Curry was the Best I have experienced for many a long time. & a Good size serving.three of us eat at a Saturday mid-afternoon for under £30 for the three of us. Drinks extra.and compared to the "Salad & Humus" with a small amount of Meat or Feta, that's offered along the street in many eateries, The John Baird is almost impossible to Beat for the eclectic mix of Eating & Good Drink.If you are the sort that desires a "Rabbit size salad & glass of Water" or "Fruit Tea" this may not be for you.I would not hesitate to return when in area & Hungry & Thirsty for a Good Pint.Alas Parking can be an issue but that's not the Establishments fault. and one can usually find a place within a short walk away. at Weekends & evenings.

I was happy to revisit this place, after coming here for years. The Thai food was great, with an excellent menu. Very tasty. The tap selection is also pretty good, while the staff were friendly. The John Baird has been dressed up; a very nice atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

NIce place, welcoming, but totally let down by lack of attention and long waits... If youre with a group then this would be a place to go.

Went for a late lunch. There was only one other table just finishing their meal and yet the service was appalling. Virtually ignored us. The staff were more interested in having their own lunch and chatting together than serving us. Unfortunately we were there when there was a sports event on and there was a very loud group of drinkers near the restaurant so it was not an enjoyable experience. Shame as the food was very enjoyable.

This is my third visit to this restaurant and being knowledgeable about Thai food it goes without saying that I wouldn't have returned if the food hadn't been very good.Our latest visit was marred by the fact that the service was just awful. I've been to Thailand many many times and put up with bad service due to the language problem there but didn't expect it in London.Our bottle of white wine wasn't cold. We asked for ice and a bit came in a bucket. We asked for more and eventually it arrived. In the end I went to the bar and asked for ice for our glasses myself.The waitress didn't seem to know what to do. She half cleared the table and then wandered away. I had to ask for the rest to be cleared.Service of the food was slow but when it came it was delicious and the prices are reasonable.When we asked for the bill that was a while coming and wasn't an explanatory one with itemised dishes etc. we waited for the credit card machine but it also took a while that in the end paid in cash.The Thai staff need to be given more training.

4 stars are for the food which is really good. I could have been 5 stars if it wasn't essentially an English pub.

Visited John Baird again 22.4.14. for lunch, again the food was out of this world as well as 2 or 3 pints of lovely real ales. The staff were great, friendly and welcoming, and the prices not too bad. On 23.4.14 visited again with my elderly parents for a drink, Keith and his staff could not be more welcoming, the garden is spotless and the hospitality superlative. My parents are stating they need to look no further for a lovely meal and a afternoon drink.

Thai cuisine is one of my favourites, and when you see a pub advertising Thai food I normally roll my eyes. The Black Orchid could open up a chain - its THAT good. I've been in some Thai restaurants that don't measure up. Beautifully presented dishes, (favourite is the drunken noodle) great service and good ales at the bar. Been a few times now and would recommend to anyone. Reasonable prices too.

Visited this restaurant on my husband's birthday as he is a big fan of thai food. The restaurant was nicely decorated and had a lovely atmosphere. The menu was quite extensive. Both my husband and I ordered stir fry dishes and the food was served very, very quickly. Both our dishes were absolutely delicious and exactly how we had asked for it to be. The staff at the restaurant were extremely pleasant and attentive. Couldn't have chosen a better place to eat on a special day!!

Not sure what happened aa this place was great first time I visited. Starters arrived 15 minutes apart and the same thing happened with rice for the mains so one of our party was unable to start eating. No apology from the staff, who just looked surprised when we questioned what was taking so long. A waitress knocked a half full glass of wine into my meal - granted this was an accident but neither the meal or wine was replaced or taken off the bill.Shoddy service, not a word or smile from the staff and the bill eventually chucked in front of us. We were there for over 3 hours for two courses and coffee!A real shame as the food was lovely but this was a family birthday and the whole thing was just embarrassing.

What a gem of a restaurant, tucked away. Great local place in the hill with a good selection of British ale, beer, wine from the bar. Service is fantastic, food is amazing and high quality we regularly dine here since finding this place a few months ago. Our friends and family also enjoy!

The Thai food is very good. We went in a party of four and everyone ordered something different, and we were all happy with the food. I've even plenty of Thai food (including in Thailand itself), and this is as good as anywhere else I have eaten, and probably more traditional Thai than many places in London.

this venue is a must if in the North London area, the food is out of this world, staff more than welcoming and reasonably priced. The beef was extremely succulent and the chicken satay out of this world. The pub is also clean excellent selection of real ales and not too pricey. Will certainly go back.

I love Thai food, have travelled extensively in Thailand and eaten at some great restaurants. Moved to London fairly recently and after visiting a large number of poor/average Thai restaurants in Muswell Hill, Crouch End and central thought I would give this place a go following good reviews on trip advisor. Have to say I was sceptical given that it is in the back of a pub. I was proved completely wrong, authentic great Thai food, the best red Thai curry I have had in London by a long way and a very well made pad Thai. You also get a decent drinks list because its part of a pub. Never been to a Thai restaurant in the back of a pub before and it was a bit of an odd set up in that regard but if you are a genuine lover of Thai food this place is a must visit. Service was prompt.

Have eaten takeaway from here a couple of times. Always ready when they say it will be and the food is delicious even if the portions are on the small side.

We were staying in Muswell Hill for a couple of days and walking around looking for somewhere to eat when we came across the John Baird pub. Both being big fans of Thai food we decided to give it a try and oh! are we so glad that we did! Totally delicious food, exceptionally presented - the sea bass will be long remembered and the classic stir fry with thai basil was oh so tasty! The wide range of real ales and quality ciders must also be mentioned. We sat in the pub side to enjoy our meal which was just as nice as if we had sat in the restaurant. Excellent quality, excellent value for money, highly recommended!

A lot of pubs in London have Thai on the menu, but this one is a bit special. Great pad thai and curries. You can eat in the pub, the dining room or there is an outdoor space as well. It was a nice day and aren't partial to watching football, so sat outside in the sunshine. Great service and reasonably priced.

The John Baird is a great pub, with a great and ever-changing selection of ales, and the Black Orchid is the Thai restaurant that shares the space. But if you are drinking in the pub, the restaurant does proper table service with the same quality food. It is reasonably priced and the quality is always good (we've eaten there plenty of times) - faultless.

this place has 2 sections. either you sit down at the restaurant or at the pub and order. during foot ball season they have 2 large screens, tvs going on. well located, friendly service, nice food, not very expensive. will go when we want Thai food.

One of the best thai meal I ever had. Relaxing atmosphore and very attentive staff which brings over the authentic Thai flavours. The taste is awesome and the price quite reasonable. Take away available and strongly recommended a walk around Muswell Hill after dinner.

Went here last week for the first time. I visited with my Thai family. This is the first time I have tasted Thai food in the UK that really tastes like the Thai food we eat all the time when in Thailand. The salads were really good. Nice atmosphere and extensive menu. Obviously popular, we didn't book but were lucky to get a table for 3 plus a baby. My only complaint is the price - as usual with Thai food in UK, it is a bit pricey. Very tasty though!

If you ever venture up to N10 which is North London, Muswell Hill to be precise I would certainly recommend The Black Orchid Thai Restaurant.It's in the John Baird pub, which has a super wide selection of beers and wines and is also very nice.The restaurant has its own dining room which is tastefully decorated and has some lovely photographic images of Thailand on the walls.The menu caters for all tastes and really is very good. I travel to Thailand often and rate the chefs skills!Perhaps not the cheapest, but it's worth it!

I never expected to find such good quality food at a pub. I've paid much more for much less. There's lots of choice and the food was well presented and most importantly very tasty. I had the Black Orchid special rice which was sweet and savoury, very robust. I ordered a sauce which I didn't need and the satay sauce and chilli oil I asked for remained untouched. The portions are generous and though I didn't think I would manage, I did clean my plate. Also the setting is comfortable. Recommend and will definitely go back.

I was told to go here many times and i always pushed it to the side, how wrong i was. This is a great little find and i've now been here many times as it's right on my door step. Food is fantastic, staff are great and very helpful. I hope you enjoy just like i have.

I have eaten in The Black Orchid at the John Baird maybe 20 times and can honestly say that I never been disappointed....The menu is extensive and the food delicious....The staff are absolutely charming and efficient... I really can't recommend this place highly enough! Only minor criticism would be that the deserts are a little on the mundane but, then again, I rarely have room for one. This has got to be one of the best Thai restaurants in North London!

This is hidden away inside the John Baird but if you want good Thai food at a reasonable price then it's worth a visit. Eaten here a few times and never been disappointed, the food is fab!

Thought I would give this a try as I had been in there the previous day for a pint and the food smelt good. A very ordinary meal and the beef dish was very chewey and over cooked. There is a thai restaurant a few doors down which beats hit hands down. It is more expensive but worth every penny.

for me the real restaurant experience is tasting food that is intriguing yet familiar and nearly impossible to replicate. surely this restaurant delivers a well tasting traditional yet intriguing tasting food , i will definitely recommend to all and also encourage people to try the more exotic items on the menu , having tried the tamarind duck really left a good taste on my memory. brilliant

Came here for the first time recently so that I could eat some Thai food and my husband could watch the football in the ajoining John Baird pub. I wasn't expecting as good a meal as I got. The service was great - they seated us so hubby could watch the football and eat in the restaurant without any trouble. The food was just so tasty and authentic. Great menu variety too. Will definitely be returning!
