Wow. First visit to this beautiful pub. The food was amazing. It's the best steak I have ever eaten. Compliments to the chef. Louise who served us is just lovely. Down to earth and nothing was to much trouble for her. We will be back !!! Thanks again.

Have visited this lovely place three times now, and it has been superb each time. Over the visits, between us and our companions, we have managed to sample the pies, burgers, cod mornay, venison casserole, and a variety of desserts. All have been wonderful, including the perfectly cooked accompaniments, including seasonal veg, chips, and parmesan mash. All enjoyed in the relaxing atmosphere of the charming rustic rooms and cosy fire. In addition, we have had perfect service, from Zoe, and the manageress. Intend to revisit frequently!

Four of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals last night. We chose three different meals ( 2 had fish and chips, one Black Lion burger, and one steak pie and chips) and each were cooked perfectly and tasted very nice. The staff were lovely and very helpful. It’s only the second time we’ve been but we’ll certainly be back.

Been out for food tonight, was really looking forward to it as heard good things. The starters were average. The mains, we had the chicken burger and the Barnsley chop. The Barnsley chop was extremely salty and all we could taste. With the burger, I took one bite and all that I could smell and taste was cinnamon. I queried why it was so strong in cinnamon as it isn’t mentioned on the menu and was told the chef uses ‘mixed spices’ not sure what spices I would want on a chicken and cheese burger but was certainly not cinnamon. I was offered a new main however at this point we were ready to leave due to the poor service. Not being offered any drinks throughout the meal or having anyone check on our food the whole time we were eating. (I had to go and find someone to ask about the burger) Paid for all meals despite the complaint, will definitely not be returning and for anyone going in the future, don’t bother with the burger.

Had a two course Sunday lunch, and my lamb was succulent.... the missus had beef. Both with yorkshire pud and veg, lovely staff and a good selection of ales and wine. Highley recommend.

We dined at The Black Lion for the first time on a Sunday. The service was excellent and the food was delectable. We are certainly looking forward to our next visit.

Nice place and staff, just a shame that all 6 of us had cold food, apart from the macaroni cheese which was hotter than the sun.

We have just enjoyed a superbly cooked meal at The Black Lion Inn. We will definitely be returning and no hesitation recommending the food and beer. Great service and reasonably priced.

Really expensive for the average quality of food. Beer is kept very well. Staff are very attentive, albeit quite stressed running around, extra team member would definitely help. It's a lovely venue. Do watch for the 10% service charge on the bill.

Visited this pub on a Sunday when there was 6 of us for Sunday lunch. It was £22.95 for 2 courses. I had a Sunday roast with lamb and the chocolate brownie for dessert. The roast was very average, the lamb was sliced wafer thin and not overly tasty. There was 6 of us having a roast main and we got a small to medium sized dish of vegetables to share that went with the mains, so just a taster each. The brownie dessert was OK but I've had better brownies from a Betty crocker packet mix. If I hadn't had a dessert I wouldn't have been full. Also there's a compulsory service charge, which I find extremely cheeky. Not worth the money.

It's a really lovely place to enjoy traditional surroundings and ambiance coupled with great food and service.

We went here on a whim for our anniversary afternoon tea as we had heard good things about it. As we walked in I was instantly hit with the vibe. And what a vibe it is. Very cottage like and warm. Very farmer esc is the best way I can describe it with beautiful and nostalgic furnishings throughout, pictures of local wildlife and the history of the place really pull you in straight away. We were greeted by a lovely lady called Zoey and she was instantly helpful and you could tell she wanted us to have the best experience. We sat in the cubby area which was a bit more secluded and lovely and warm. The food itself was incredible. I make a point of trying afternoon teas as I love them and I promise this one is brilliant. You get a selection of sandwiches, home made (huge) sausage roll section and pork,chicken pie. Along with this you get a selection of cakes and possibly the nicest scones I've ever eaten. Plenty of tea aswell. Whilst I was there I took a look at the toilets, nothing to special and a bit outdated now but did the trick I couldn't see and wheelchair access but on this occasion I didn't look around the whole place, they may have some around the side but don't quote me there. Parking is attached for punters aswell as some over the road, not loads so be wary of you come at a busier time. Service was brilliant, Zoey truly is a gem, she really put alot of effort into providing the best experience and was happy and bubbly throughout, truly made us feel welcome. Really easy to book aswell on their website and they are active on social media if you have questions The price for the two afternoon teas with tea came to £43 so not too bad for what we got Overall we had the best time here and will be returning/telling people about it 5/5

Lovely lunch. Chose from the lunchtime menu, which is a bit cheaper and smaller portions, but the food was still great. Highly recommend.

Absolutely fabulous place. Been going 25 years and the food is always delicious and the ale selection spot on. The staff are always super friendly, helpful and the place is gorgeous and cozy.

After waiting a full hour our meal finally arrived ok good fresh food it certainly was. However !!!! My partner went to pay for the meal& gave a £10 tip why am i so disgusted because they took the tip plus £13 + service charge and never mentioned the service charge once ..... pure greed in this day and age of osterity going out for dinner you don't expect money grabbing no matter how good the food /staff/atmosphere was

Fantastic meals and service. The best steak pie I’ve eaten in a long time. Staff couldn’t do enough for us . They even apologised for our food taking a long time. As I told them ‘them good things are worth waiting for’ and it was. Everything is home cooked. We will be back ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Great beer selection. Cask and keg. Food was great. Lovely place. The staff were friendly but apologetic as it took her over 5 minutes to take our order. Not her fault. She was run off her feet. We'll give it another go. Hopefully more bar staff next time. I do appreciate pubs have had a hard time lately, and it's Monday afyernoon. But surely one of the other staff could have helped her. Again, the young lady who served us was faultless.

We visited last night. The staff were knowledgeable, helpful and very friendly. A nice welcoming atmosphere. We had Salad Nicoise which we felt was expensive for what it was. The tuna steak was a little dry. The accompaniments were very sparse. One egg cut in half, two pieces of potato, a bit of gem lettuce and six olives. No presentation. A Salad Nicoise usually has green beans and anchovies on. We had Key Lime Pie for desert which was awful. The tartlets were half filled with runny tasteless custardy type filling. It should be of a mousse like consistency. One of mine was only half full. The icecream was nice. Really disappointing. I don't think we'll risk it again.

Seems to be underused . We got a friendly welcome from the bar staff and lunch was quite good. The place is roomy and clean . I hope it stays viable.

Called on spec the pub was quite busy for a Tuesday, good choice of wine by the glass we had a merlot and Sauvignon. For starters we shared salt an pepper calamari which was excellent. I had steak pie, perfect pie crust, and steak filling, veg wasn’t overcooked and the mash was creamy. My wife had the pea and asparagus risotto which was again beautifully cooked. Couldn’t find room for deserts, however, we will be back.

My Fiancée & I wanted to finish our long weekend together with a meal out & she suggested we eat here, So we booked a table for 7.30 & arrived 10 minutes late……! This wasn’t a problem & we were made to feel very welcome immediately, we given the choir tables as well. The staff were polite & very friendly, the service swift but not hurried - the food was cooked to perfection & we had a wonderful evening. I’m happy to say we will be returning in the near future to sample much more of their menu, but steak night is definitely beckoning. Thank you for making our evening a very enjoyable one & we will see you again soon.

Nice little hidden gem that is fast becoming my go-to pub when home. Whether you want to go for a quick drink or a nice hearty pub meal, The Black Lion is the 1st choice. Dog friendly, great staff, great food and a pleasant atmosphere. What more could you ask for?!

I can't believe how rude that the landlord was to reply to a previous comment of 'WE'RE NOT TOBY CAVERY' just because as a customer a comment was made. To tell you the truth I like Toby carvery at least you get more food for the price which is only £11. Also you don't have other party members eating from the same bowl of vegetables for 3 people. Also outrageous that we should be charged a £5 service charge on top of our expensive meal which was not great. Surely you have to let customers aware somewhere on the premise that this is applied to the final bill of 10%.

Very expensive Sunday dinner of £17. The veg that accompanied the dinner did not come out individually, one bowl was sent out for 3 persons. For the amount you spend you would expect to have a separate bowl of vegetables for each person.

First time visit last night. Great location, friendly, helpful staff and their pie is the best I've ever had.

WORST Restaurant ever ! If I could give it 0 stars I would …nightmare to be seen …had to find our own table …agers for someone serve …had to get drinks myself from bar …. had to get up to get second drink red wine was like it had come out of a freezer …food had been on table going cold ten minuets…mushrooms were like bullets …main food came pie was like old boots and mash like it had been left on the side days …had to get up to another drink …. Returned food told 15 minutes wait on another choice so I declined ..person I was with felt the experience was poor ..so wouldn’t carry on eating went to bar to be seen by some “fat scruffy looking woman who was patronising and rude “ I hope this wasn’t a example of management ! WORST Experience ever ..wouldn’t deduct the main because she said it was our choice to leave if ! Sort your staff out !

Food was good as was beer. Service a little slow and prices a little high, hence four stars rather than five.

Booked for a valentines night, nothing at the venue indicated it was valentines night. Staff were brilliant and attentive. Menu very limited. Starters not the best, cauliflower so hard it couldn't be cut, was told to would better off the bill, but wasn't. Pork belly starter soft and not appertising. Mains were acceptable but nothing special. Overall disappointed 😞

Pre-booked a table for 2 on Saturday evening & was pleased to see the tables were well spaced apart. The staff were all friendly, polite & accommodating. The menu showed a wide selection for me & a good number of gluten free options for my partner. For starter, I chose 'Pork trio' (a selection of homemade sausages, sausage rolls and breaded black pudding balls on a bed of mustard mayonnaise)...my partner chose 'Ham hock terrine with gf bread'. Both starters were tasty & plentiful. For main, I chose homemade 'Steak & ale pie', which was served with thick cut chips, a bowl of seasonal vegetables and a pot of thick gravy (the pie was full of thick chunks of tender beef)...my partner chose 'Cod loin wrapped in pancetta', which was served on a bed of pea & cheese risotto. Again, both meals were tasty (one of the best pies I've had) & plentiful - I had to leave some of my chips. We were both too full to have dessert...maybe next time, as we will definitely return!

Went with family for a birthday meal. The pub has a lovely open fire and a nice ambience. Food was good, but I was a little disappointed that they didn't have any vegan ice cream/cream etc., to accompany deserts. Most places these days seem to cater for food intolerances, so to not have a non dairy option seems a bit strange. It wouldn't hurt to keep some vegan ice cream in the freezer!.

Brilliant pub, great fresh food and very welcoming, friendly staff

Went for dinner at The Black Lion. The food was delicious. We had the beef pie and seasonal vegetables. The pie was a proper stand alone pie (not a dish of cheap meat with some pre-prepared pastry lid sat on it), it was chock full of lovely beef chunks in a rich gravy. The vegetables we beautifully cooked with just a little crunch left in them. You can choose between mash or chips we had one of each and shared, both were lovely. All in all a great meal. Even our dog was made to feel just as welcome as we were, getting her own bowl of water to drink while she watched the welcoming log fire. All in all a lovely evening.

Had a meal tonight seemed alright until a few hours later I've had severe stomach, irritable bowels, feeling rather unwell, tables are really sticky and very over priced plus a service charge

Visited Thur. 17th November very disappointed meal was very substandard for Black Lion Reputation Bar extremely noisy with uncalled for language. Extremely short staffed wont return.

It was not the best meal. I ordered Halloumi fries with tomato chutney sorry no chutney. Two of us had coffee brought to us were told no teaspoons so brought desert spoons Only small things but they were wrong.

I have taken some time to write this review as my Mother and myself visited earlier this year. The issue still grates with me as I think we weren't treated fairly. We had a pleasant enough meal there, albeit expensive. We decided to leave a tip for the waiting person. When we went to pay we weren't given a break down of the bill, just a PDQ machine passed to us to pay by card. On receipt of the paper bill I realised we had paid a service charge, unbeknown to us. The woman did not explain this up front so we ultimately paid 2 service charges. Not been there since.

Just returned from a fabulous meal sat outside at the Black Lion. My posh finger sandwich was delicious, as were my sons and husbands meals. The women’s toilets were spotless! We will definitely be back!

Lovely food... steak and ale pie was amazing.. great service too!

Sticky tables. The first thing we noticed, all the tables said reserved on, yet there was only one occupied table. The server said we could sit anywhere. A Good choice of beers and lagers. The table was sticky with hairs stuck to it. I mentioned to the server. She gave it a wipe, but the hairs remained, I picked them off and dropped delicately to the floor. The duck liver parfait for starter wasn’t homemade, which I was expecting, it wasn’t smooth, rich, pink and silky and not great for nearly £8. It tasted really porky, was coarse and the chutney was poor, the rocket not dressed, just slightly wilted and drizzled with a really sweet artificial balsamic glaze. The brioche was toasted nicely. But not very buttery or rich, just slightly bland and dry. The Lamb shoulder main course (approx £18) was disappointing. With a pea and mint risotto. The risotto was lacking mint, seasoning and terribly over cooked, like really over cooked. The portion of lamb was big and healthy. But again unseasoned. Even when eaten with the feta garnish, it was still found to be lacking. There was a very generous serving of a poor quality olive oil poured over the meal. Hopefully the other 3 main courses served with a variation of risotto or the veggie risotto main fair better. I passed on dessert and the Elizabeth Shaw chocolate mint that was offered with the bill. Oh what a throw back to the 90’s. A little homemade fudge or chocolate would of been lovely… but oh well. It’s a shame the toilets with the old school urinal were filthy. Cob webs hanging from the ceiling. Hopefully the kitchen is cleaner. It’s a lovely little pub and would go back for a drink. But pass on the food. If you are charging top money, you need to back it up with top food. It was alright, but alright isn’t good enough. I can’t even offer a an extra star for trying. Maybe that’s why it was so quiet.

Great service and lovely food in this pub which is full of character in a pretty village setting. The pub has a cosy atmosphere, is dog friendly and also has an outdoor seating area. Unfortunately there is no disabled toilet at present which is disappointing 😕

Overpriced!! Lovely pub but they can’t half charge! £8.40 for two soft drinks - that’s just crazy! The food is decent but again, you can’t get anything for under £20. Such a shame that this is getting so expensive locals won’t be able to nip in for a quick drink soon.
