The Black Horse in Norwich

An excellent lunch despite the weather. We started with meat sharing board followed by burgers, fish and chips, salt and pepper squid and crab linguini. All the meals were excellent as was the service. Thoroughly recommended.

Great time at this pub. Staff were all a credit from the host to the waitress. Food was outstanding, one of the best meals we’ve had in the past year and a half! The queue to get in says a lot about this place

We have had many roasts before lockdown but today thought we would try a takeaway roast, I was expecting it to be slightly less amazing ad it was a takeaway. However thus was not the case it was just as amazing and we couldn't be happier. We only wish it wasn't as expensive as it is. But for once jna while it is such a beautiful treat. Try their roasts!!!!

Well, that was lovely. And almost too easy. Best local lockdown takeaway so far. Excellent service. Friendly people. Bloody delicious food. Just what we needed on this cold, dark, lockdown Saturday indoors!

Have eaten here many times and it never fails to deliver. First trip out for a meal with my parents in several months (we all know why) and as per normal great roasts all round and a good selection of sides. Staff as always superb, nothing to much trouble. Hope your back soon x

Another great experience today and arguably serving the best Sunday roast in Norwich. Service was fast, efficient and attentive at all times. From the greeting and drinks in a very comfortable waiting area to the excellent lunch, we really couldn’t have been happier. Such a nice experience, would highly recommend! Special thanks to Sam for looking after us so well.

Has to be a five out of five from me. If you’ve not had the food but left a review you are scum in my eyes. Pubs and restaurants are doing their best in these times and Black Horse has it just right, plus the new marquee is awesome. Recently we’ve come for a few lunches as wife does a 4 to 8 shift on Mondays. Mostly always have the chicken burger which is wow. Wife has tried various mains. Always great. Very Covid friendly. The NHS covid app is now in use, perhaps the previous one was a bit fiddly. Can’t wait for our next visit.

Lovely pub to have a decent pub meal & catch up with a friend. The staff were super friendly & helpful at every point, working so hard during these odd times to keep everyone safe. Had a beef burger which was great, loaded fries too - also great. Would definitely recommend a visit if you’re in Norwich.

Recently visited for a Sunday Roast with my Wife and Mother. WOW the food was exceptional, super tasty and the vegetables are to die for. Although the pub was busy we were allocated a table really quickly and the table service was very friendly and engaging.The COVID procedures for the whole pub seemed very well thought through, and balanced making the whole experience really enjoyable.Will definitely be back soon

On a short visit to Norwich we happened upon The Black Horse which was so well run that we came for a second night. The food was excellent and Sam Jarvis, who I think is the maitre de, was so accommodating and helpful that I would employ him any time. The COVID rules were followed meticulously and he and his staff (pretty, I think,even behind the masks!) could not have done a better job. Well done to you all!

Usually excellent but the staff seemed to have changed and come across surly and disengaged.Food still consistently very good and the place takes Covid measures seriously so still worth a visit- If you sit within the new marquee outside try and avoid the table near the back wall with the loud generator.

Sistema de reserva absolutamente impactante, intenté reservar para el almuerzo del domingo (no puede hacer esto hasta el lunes anterior, es justo), pero cuando suena (si puede comunicarse), no puede hacer una reserva antes de las 12 pm ( aparentemente el sistema de reservas no lo permite). Después de varios intentos de llamar después de las 12 p. M., Finalmente llego justo después de las 3 p. M. Para que me digan que vuelva a llamar después de las 4 p. El personal es extremadamente inútil y, francamente, una pérdida de tiempo. Llevaré mi negocio a otra parte. ¡No vayas a este establecimiento, ve a algún lugar que apreciará tu negocio!

Awful service. The staff were rude and had an attitude. They was not accommodating at all and they were obnoxious. I never had food, but the beeF looked disgusting and they couldn’t even cut it up as it was very rubbery and fatty. I am appalled that staff get away with the way they talk to the people that keep them in a job! If they don’t like working there or struggle being polite and nice then maybe look for a different career path. I certainly won’t be going back and the owner I suggest takes the staff for an overhaul in customer service training.

I feel compelled to tell you what a great pub the Black Horse is! Norwich has always been known as great place to enjoy a pint. It was once said that Norwich had enough pubs that you could drink in a different pub every day for a year boosting over 365 pubs. I have drank in all the 365 and the black horse is my favourite. With all that choice and wondering where to go? Head to the Black Horse for food, drink and a giggle. The staff are great, I’m really pleased to see Dave is now managing there with all his experience of working at the best pubs in Norwich, you can feel relaxed that you will be taken care of. Rosie has done an amazing job of turning around a lost pub in the Mecca of the golden triangle. If you don’t go your missing out!

I have visited The Black Horse three time’s this fortnight for food! Every time it has been spot on. Firstly, a friend and I went for Sunday Roast, it was amazing. I have done a tour of roasts around the city and this is by far, one of the best. I then visited the next day with my sister to enjoy their extended Eat Out to Help Out scheme in Sept. I was expecting it to be a smaller, less considered meal as the restaurant are having to foot the discount themselves, but it wasn’t at all. The pork was gorgeous, gravy delicious. Our dishes were missing the crackling so the waitress bought out a giant bowl full in apology! Then yesterday my husband and I went to take advantage of the extended, extended scheme and we both had the steak. Oh my goodness, I’m salivating just thinking about it now. It was amazing, cooked to perfection, succulent and plentiful. Was mega impressed and definitely be back. The ambience and decor is lovely (although I miss the massive bookshelf in the middle!) and all the staff are polite, friendly and really trying amidst all these Covid rules. I think you’re doing a superb job and I have been raving about you guys to anyone who will listen!

upon arrival and approaching the land lady to discuss my booking (outside) instead of a warm friendly greeting I was given a turse directive to go back and wait by the sign... not a great start. Was then told i couldn't share an outside table with 2 friends because i was meeting others for lunch.Was stopped from speaking to a friend who was passing on way to the loo even though she was a metre away. the waitresses had the same grumpy cold demeanour as the land lady. After lunch we requested to move to an empty outside table in the sun,were told we couldn't have 7 at a table outside even though we had 7 at a table inside and the rule of six hadn't come in yet. We became a six, so complied with their rules, were then told they would "give us" half an hr at the outside table.... as if they were doing us some kind of favour... even though the outside tables weren't booked. we were made to feel unwelcome and like an inconvenience by all the awful staff from the landlady down... to the point we just wanted to leave and not stay for drinks. A nice pub and potentially reasonable food ( beef was tough as old boots ) let down by unnecessarily rude,authoritative personalities running it. We will not go again on principle...

We had a Sunday roast which was presented nicely and tasted very good all washed down with a bottle of reasonably priced merlot. The service was attentive and the prices reasonable (£15) for the quality and quantity of food. We will return

Went to the Black Horse for Sunday Roast lunch. Five of us all had different roast and all were excellent. The Veggie one stood out as being the best Veg roast my guest has eaten in a long time. Service was very good too.

Mi marido tenía la carne. Todo bien. Se sentía muy seguro y espacioso en estos tiempos de Covid. Went in yesterday for the first Sunday Roast sitting of the year. All protocol was being followed, staff were cleaning tables, encouraging people to follow the rules etc.The roast was banging, presented well but certainly not style of substance! We even saw a couple who were dining invite another couple over to their table (the staff had to stop this from happening), could have easily peed the customers off but well done to staff for enforcing the rules.

Todos dieron en el clavo: hummus con pan plano caliente; calamares a la sal y pimienta; ternera crujiente con chili y ensalada verde.El personal explicó el proceso para registrarse para rastrear y rastrear claramente las prohibiciones nos cuidaron bien. ¡Grandes pulgares arriba en todos lados!

The Food was faultless and very tasty, what ruined our visit was the bad attitude of pretty much all of the staff, especially the female manager. We won’t be returning due to the lack of customer service and rudeness. I certainly would not accept my staff to act in this way. Training required!

Managed to book here late in the day for a Saturday evening but did accommodate us. Tables spaced out and one way system in place for the Covid rules, even staff all wearing masks which is reassuring when serving food.. Food didn't take long to come out and was delicious- Hubby had the fish and chips and I had the pulled pork tagliatelle- both really tasty.

Went this afternoon. Was sat in a seat in the sun and not allowed to move to the shade. Waited 30 mins and, despite asking to order 3 times left without being served. Will never go again.

Great food, plenty of room, fantastic staff! 10/10, would recommend! Gluten free option on food is also amazing!

Paramos aquí para almorzar el domingo. Esta fue nuestra primera visita y todo fue fabuloso. Nos sentamos en el agradable jardín que tenía un ambiente agradable. Todo el personal fue amable, el servicio rápido y eficiente y la comida era deliciosa. I visited today (23rd July) for lunch with my girlfriend. Kellie served us and her service was fantastic!!! The food was absolutely incredible also. I’ll certainly be a regular visitor to this pub.

This was our first venture out to have a meal and drink since the restrictions were eased. Although we understand we need to keep safe we also need to support local businesses. We were looked after excellently from the moment we arrived. Polite staff and really lovely food.

was on earlham to go to another place (the earlham norwich) but found that the place had changed hands and name so stopped here for a drink to see what it was like and ended up having lunch. very excellent ordered a large fish platter to share and wish i had ordered the small but asked to take the bread and olives home as couldnt finish the food. couldnt fault the food and the breakfasts looked very appetising as well from what we saw.

Probably some of the best roast in Norwich. The vegan roast was excellent. Fish cakes were delightful. They open until late so happy days.

Came here with my husband for a birthday meal but wasn't what we expected. The eating area was very small and the place seemed it was used more as a local pub, so very noisey and crowded,we could hardly move and had to wait 15mins for someone to seat us. Server seemed very short and miserable, like she didn't want to be there.Food was amazing so no complaints there. Will definitely come back again just not on a Friday evening.

Manchmal überrascht einen die Welt positiv. Dieser Pub sieht nett aus, die Leute sind nett, das Bier war kalt und das Essen war super. Was will man mehr, Weitergehen lohnt nicht. Ich habe eine Norwicher Wurst mit Kartoffelbrei und Trüffelöl gegessen, wie sehr sehr lecker war - nicht nur für britische Verhältnisse.

Avery good evening meal ,two of us had the wild mushroom stroganoff ,absolutely delicious. Friendly ,helpful service,good beer and wines - my red was organic . Gluten free no problem.

Very busy, not always possible to book a table. Limited parking. Friendly staff. Large plates of good food for Sunday roast. Looks as if it would be a good place in Summer weather.

One of the best roast dinners I have had, excellent service from Sam who waited on our table, just the right amount of time between courses not rushed. Great pub with a lovely warm welcoming atmosphere, can highly recommend and we will be returning again very soon.

Just been here for an evening meal .The service was good ,and they were able to cater for a large group which in other establishments we have found them not able to achieve this . The food was delicious and the atmosphere warm and friendly . Give it a try you won’t be disappointed !

Myself and my girlfriend popped in here for a Sunday eve roast, I have just moved to Norwich and my GF was keen to show off our local. It did not disappoint, the roast was amazing! Great value and such a friendly environment, the staff were friendly and not overly attentive, rather totally upfront, honest and really helpful. We were served by Sam who was a great lad, even giving me recommendations for good spots to visit in Norwich. Overall a really brilliant pub, great food and genuine friendly welcome. Top marks guys!

The Black Horse is a fantastic pub with fantastic service. The roast is unparalleled and the cauliflower cheese is a must have. Excellent service from Ezra, Sam and Karl. Topped off with a lovely atmosphere, it’s the best place to spend an evening.

Prebooked a party of 10 and a dog. We were made to feel very welcome. The food was brilliant and served very quickly. They even do a small roast for the dog free of charge. Will be back for sure.

My husband and I went to The Black Horse pub for lunch on a Sunday. We had a great roast which was very filling and beautifully cooked.

We go here occasionally and the food is always good, but pricey.

Its a real shame the Black Horse was becoming a regular for us. Unfortunatly the last two visits have put us off. We were in on wednesday and we all ordered the same thing but unfortunatly the food came out cold and we had to wait ages for drinks. Ok, so we can all have an off day and it was really busy. We returned for sunday dinner the same week and this time the beef was cold and was like rubber and was slimey to taste. I dont know if the chef has changed or they are becoming a victim of their own success and standards are startng to slip? Finally, i know its a dog friendly pub and thats fine but i do object to dogs sitting on tables and then having to eat food where its arse once was. sort it out black horse please.

Popped in with a classmate after a lecture with a desperate need for a half pint and a fancy snack, and oh boy, did they deliver! I had some kind of magical battered egg on a bed of veggies and hollandaise, died and went promptly to heaven. We got great service from Sam. I'm looking forward to a return trip to sample more of the menu!

Absolutely love the black horse, first found this place a couple of summers ago and now eat out at least once per month. The menu is updated on a regular basis, the Sunday lunch is great and the beer choice is very good. Staff are always friendly and welcoming.

4 of us went here for Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed. The manager Adam is a delight and really makes this place he goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is happy. Our server Alex was also fab and on hand with recommendations on the wine even though we chose a different one ( sorry Alex our friends happen to like Portuguese wine ). Now onto the food well it didn’t disappoint either 4 happy customers ....we had beef and pork both gorgeous....we even managed to fit in a dessert which I must say were delicious....salted caramel Creme brûlée and Bakewell Tart. We will definitely be back thanks guys.

Had a meal with a group of 11 last night. Firstly there were some shortcomings in the service mostly I think through misunderstandings. However the Manager clearly went the extra mile to make sure everyone was happy. Things go wrong in the service industry and the proof of the pudding is in how a company responds. Here - perfectly.

We are lucky enough that The Black Horse is our local. Little did we expect when we walked through the unassuming door a couple of years ago that we were about to sample the best pub grub for miles. Whether it be breakfast, dinner or Sunday lunch the quality of the food and service is spot on. On the off chance that it ever hasn't been, it is always addressed quickly! We will continue to return far more often than our purses and our waistbands would like.

Best Sunday roast I have had except yours mum, my 32 yr old daughter exclaimed after eating here. I must admit it was pretty dam good. For a Busy Sunday before Christmas service was also great and a lovely atmosphere at the bar before we were seated. We were a little late and the table not quite ready but mulled wine and speciality beers while we waited a short while got us in the mood for our roasts. 2 of us had chicken and 2 beef. Beautifully presented topped with a Yorkshire. We also had a portion of cauliflower cheese which was gorgeous. 2 puddings were shared, both brownies with an sumptuous chocolate sauce. We will be back!

Service was very good considering it looked liked they were operating at maximum capacity with large Christmas party bookings, small groups and couples. The only issue was a drinks order that was incorrectly take but Sam remedied this swiftly. Our party of 4 had two steaks, one fish and one pork and all arrived together and each of us was impressed, we then stuck around after dinner and sampled the cocktail menu too. Overall very good. ✅VG

Reserved a table for 10 people for 4pm on a Saturday. They put us in the worst corner of the pub where the tables were dark, cramped and dingy. We requested 3 times to move to a recently renovated area, but were denied. The entire duration of our stay the other tables were vacant without reservation signed. The main menu for this time was a ONLY burger and chipped, vegetarian or meat. Had to re order our drink three times for two of our guests as they were forgotten. Disappointing onion rings included (all batter).

Greta & Sam gave brilliant service, the food and beer were great. Highly recommended! Lovely setting & staff. Great value!

Delightful little eatery but twas busy as twas full for Christmas service. We were kept waiting for 4.5 minutes. Got a table that wasn't round so my elbows were exposed to the vicious corners (I had forgotten my be-elbow patched jacket so was less protected than usual). The food was serviceable although asked for my usual lasagne and was disappointed that this pub doesnt serve that Italian dish, crushing. In which case I asked for a spag bol and twas swiftly declined. The drab, wearisome British stodge that I twas served was very tasty but I wanted Italian food. I did not vote leave for this.

I went here for the first time with friends ,from my evening class , for the end of term

Had the pleasure of having my Sunday roast here whilst visiting family in Norwich and it was fantastic. My son did mention that it's the best roast in Norwich as he's a regular but I have to say it was the best roast I've had to date and a very friendly and quick service too. 5 star all round.

Went to celebrate a birthday, the roast was excellent and the staff were on the ball and attentive, couldn’t ask for more.

Great roast and service every time without fail! Strongly recommend the melt-in-your-mouth roast sirloin of beef, personal favourite but it's all really delicious. My other half is celiac and vegan and there is always plenty of choice for her on the menu, which doesn't happen very often elsewhere, and the staff are really accommodating of any dietary requirements and go out of their way to make a gluten-free vegan feel welcome.

Very rude member of staff. Shame as this ruined what would have been a very good meal. Great food and lovely waitress. However, it only took the bad attitude of one to spoil the whole experience.

Visited to take lunch to celebrate my sons birthday. Excellent fish and chips in pleasant surroundings with warming log fire.

This place is great for all occasions all year round. It is very popular so best to book to avoid disappointment. 6 of us had Sunday Roasts which tasted lovely and came in good time but sadly they were all luke warm and went cold quickly. We informed the staff and they kindly gave us a 10% discount off the bill. For the money, £12-15, we had hoped for a bigger serving of vegetables though and the option for more gravy.

I've never been here before and the inside of the pub was lovely, cosy and homey. A gorgeous log fire was warming and beautiful! The staff is very welcoming and friendly. I chose the beef, being told I could have it on the rare side, and although it didn't seem very pink to me, it was tasty, but not as tender as I'd prefer. Roast carrot was gorgeous, parsnips were tasty, but overcooked and some bits inedible. Potatoes were too hard rather than crispy on the outside, but the insides were fluffy and tasty. Red cabbage was very tasty, just disappointed in the tiny quanity of butternut squash puree! I gave my Yorkshire pudding away, but reports were that they were great. I was sad for the dairy free lady who's Yorkshire was taken off her plate as it had dairy. The person who had the chicken said it was superb, and a lady ordered the vegetarian mushroom, red pepper, pinto beans and red onion polenta loaf and said it was lovely and such a nice change from the usual nut roast. Unfortunately all 6 of us received lukewarm food, but our waiter discounted the meal after being told!

We have lived in Norwich for 30 years and it was only 4 weeks ago that we made our first visit! We had lunch from a limited menu but it was delicious and reasonably priced. This pub is very well presented with plenty of dining/drinking areas, sofas if you just want a coffee and read the papers (provided), and friendly, efficient staff. We returned a week later for breakfast with friends and we all agreed it was an enjoyable experience. I’ve booked to come again in a couple of weeks with a group of ladies to check out the evening menu.

I’ve been in for the first time today and will absolutely be going back. The pub was lovely, really cosy but with a modern feel.

Literally just arrived home from a meal and couldn’t write a review quick enough! The selection of spirits, wine and drinks on tap was vast and reasonably priced. They managed to squeeze us in on a table for a Sunday roast and we are so glad they did. With my partner being gluten-free, we have grown used to, unfortunately, sub-par gluten-free roast dinners, but this was AMAZING! Would recommend to anyone. Pork was great, gluten-free brownie excellent too. The main waiter, who I assume is the manager, was excellent and is great at his job. Can’t wait for our next roast!

Best veggie burger meal I’ve had for years, fish n chips very tasty (for others on table), busy but four of us got a table

This pub does a roaring trade in Sunday roasts so you really need to book. Food is hearty rather than fancy and portions are large, but it all seemed fresh . We went with a party including vegetarians and a vegan. All were catered for ,though there was one only one dish of each, so no choice.The service is friendly and efficient and dogs are welcome, which makes a change. The desserts were scrummy!

Up visiting our daughter at uni with the dog so needed a dog friendly eatery, this is definitely that! We hadn’t booked and it was a Sunday, we were welcomed and the dog was even offered a roast for the dog!! Was a lovely atmosphere, service was super fast and we left totally full. Highly recommended, would certainly come back !

This is a lovely pub with good atmosphere and attentive staff. We found the menu somewhat strange and did struggle to find a sandwich that was acceptable. I guess we were expecting a more pub grub menu, however having said that what we had was very nicely cooked and tasty. So it comes down to our taste rather than the food.

The Black Horse on Earlham Road is not a pub I often think to visit because I live in Norwich city centre and I enjoy an abundance of choice for food and drink, however, my group of friends were allocated this pub for the dessert element of our recent annual 'Moveable Feast' charity event.

The service was great, the pub was busy and catered to all without a hitch, it was cosy without feeling overcrowded, and the food was fantastic. It was probably the best roast dinner I've had whilst eating out. I'm usually let down by one aspect or more whilst having a restaurant roast, but every bit of the plate was fantastic.

Fui hoy para un almuerzo de domingo y fue tan bueno! Tuve el pollo asado y mi amigo tenía el rosbif. Ambos estaban deliciosos, el repollo rojo fue increíble! Un poco caro a los 15 para un asado, pero vale la pena cada centavo y un regalo de cumpleaños encantador. Tuve que pedir un poco de salsa extra que estaban dispuestos a proporcionar. Luego ambos tomamos pan de banoffee y budín de mantequilla para el postre, que también era muy sabroso :)

We come here often and service and food is always amazing. Today was our first roast dinner of the year and was superb as usual!

Acabo de llegar a casa después de pasar unas maravillosas dos horas en The Black Horse en Earlham Road. Mi esposa y yo conocimos a dos de nuestros muy buenos amigos y todos tuvimos una cena asada cada uno. Dos ternera, pollo y panceta de cerdo. Cada plato que salió parecía increíble y tenía el gusto de respaldarlo. Tantos elementos para cada plato, pero todos perfectamente ejecutados por mi dinero. Me siento extremadamente satisfecho y es sin duda uno de los mejores asados que he probado.

Had Sunday lunch - food was good but service was inefficient and bordering on rude. Had to call them 4 times just to book, as apparently only the manager is allowed to take bookings. Told table 1200 to order by 1215 as they needed the table back by 1345. By 1206 our friends were being hassled to order (we had got stuck in traffic and arrived by 1210), and were told “you might not have time for dessert”! We ordered at 1210, had good food (although nothing spectacular) and below average desserts. Then they had an issue with their till which caused a delay in bringing our bill... then as we were in the process of paying were told “we need the table now as the next group have arrived” - this was at 1335. Not the right way to interact with paying customers. We might go back, but the service was a serious let down.

Before I rate our Sunday roast, I have to start by saying the service were great.
