The Black Horse in Test Valley

A beautiful, traditional pub with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We arrived early on a Friday evening for a bite to eat. The pub itself is very typically traditional, in keeping with the area and very charming. The land lady whom greeted us, showed us around and directed us to available tables is an absolute delight, she was happy to engage in conversation and we felt really comfortable there. We ordered, starters of mozzarella sticks and tempura prawns and then Pie and Mash (steak and ale) and the 1/2lb burger, just what was needed on a cold and wet dreary evening. It was comforting and delicious. Very good value for money and really enjoyed, it is what you would describe as traditional pub fayre. Lots to choose from on the menu, it's not overly large however specials and children's options available. Really enjoyed the whole evening.

A lovely, cosy pub in a perfect quintessentially English village. The Rare Breed is a great drop, the Guinness is well kept and perfectly served and the burger is delicious. Great pub grub in a warm, friendly atmosphere.

The landlady went above and beyond to make our group feel welcome in this homely pub ... she even offered to do four shuttle trips to take us all back to the accommodation we were staying at for the weekend, as she was concerned about the foggy conditions for our walk back.

We had a great meal and the landlady was so accommodating, as my brother was late!

Incredible all over , can not fault this place and the lady that owns it is extremely hard working ! Plus the dog Tilly is the best 🐶 we came across it after doing a local Geocaching loop! I read a review stating that the building was a little "tired" in which I had to laugh the building is over 400 years old 😂 Personally I thought the building was beautiful and very well maintained , they even have the added bonus of a skittle alley out the back. Definitely worth a visit if in the area!

The BEST charming, old school traditional English pub. We ate the giant Yorkshire pudding with homemade sausage and an incredible homemade pie with roast beef inside and amazing chips and gravy. What a lovely experience for our first night in this lovely little hamlet!

Really nice food, pork belly was delicious and the rhubarb crumble excellent.

Lovely food. Roasts are very good quality, tasty and good size. (Be even better if there was a plant based option). Vegan Mushroom Bouginon was nice also. Went with a group of friends. Would recommend for Sunday lunch.

We had a lovely welcome and dinner at the Black Horse yesterday evening. Thoroughly recommend the pie and chips, last night the pie was steak and ale, it's been a long time since I've had a pie as tasty. Also want to thank the owner for her sterling efforts to reunite with my bag, I hadn't even realised it was missing! Thank you again.

Great welcome in this lovely pub. 5 adults and 5 children spent a great few hours here using the skittle alley and having a great family lunch for a birthday. Good food and service. We hope to do it again in the future.

Had a light lunch with my Dad here after a walk from Broughton, lovely staff and great lunch.

My partner and I had a lovely visit to The Black Horse whilst on a trip to West Tytherley. We stopped in for dinner and a drink. Staff were friendly and helpful and were very accommodating when I asked to substitute a menu item for a vegetarian alternative. We both thoroughly enjoyed our dinners! It was a cosy atmosphere and we enjoyed our time there. I would recommend for some nice pub grub if you are in the area.

This is a great pub, lovely historic building with character, situated in the most beautiful village. The staff are great, and Lynn goes the extra mile to provide lovely home cooked meals. I can recommend the fish & chips, superb!.... and the pies!

Fantastic community feel village kind of pub. Lynn was absolutely lovely, and the barman was very friendly. Really good atmosphere. I'm GF DF and Lynn was really helpful with the menu. I'd love for that to be my local! They even had a cribbage board! (I won)

We were so disappointed with The Black Horse, we had booked a table - we walked in, no one greeted us, the barman didn’t even acknowledge us! We then found and introduced ourselves to the land lady who said we could sit anywhere. We found the restaurant area and waited for 10 minutes to be brought menus or be offered a drink and no one came! We left and no one even commented!

The staff was lovely but the food was not very average and the pub was not the cleanest place. We asked for a highchair and they kindly gave us one but it was full of cobwebs The giant Yorkshire pudding with sausages was nice but the rest,nothing to repeat

Lovely burgers eaten in the garden one June lunchtime. Friendly landlady and good service. No frills, but we didn't want any. Good food, good price, in a relaxed and friendly setting. Just what a village pub should be

Three of us turned up at the Black Horse on a day of walking and finding wonderful wildlife a few minutes after they had finished serving lunch - completely our fault, we lost track of time and certainly hadn't thought to book ahead! The wonderful landlady took one look at us and offered to make us lunch if we made our choices quickly - which we willingly did. As a result we sat in the sunshine in the delightful courtyard, consumed a couple of pints each and enjoyed freshly prepared and excellent pub food. The chips were perfect! It was such a kind and happy experience, and quite made our day!

Nice pub. Didn't try the food. The barman was friendly, but laughably slow. I'd hate to be waiting for drinks when it's busy.

Visited with a large group, very friendly welcome plenty of choice beers and cider and a very tasty curry. Skittle alley is in excellent condition.

We had lunch after a 6 mile walk around East & West Tytherley. The beer was excellent, well kept. The menu was extensive and included a good selection of favourite pub food. I had the spiced chicken and tempura king prawn which was great. Others had various dishes, all of which were well received. A perfect way to end an enjoyable walk in the Hampshire countryside.

Hostile atmosphere and not worth the price from what we saw. Only went in to check the menu, then the owner pulled in and started having a go at our family for loitering.

Food was beautiful! The cajun chicken is so good..love this place for food.

We called in last Sunday afternoonon the off chance that they might be doing food, as many pubs in the area stop food after 4pm on a Sunday ( I have no idea why!). Initially, they sadly had to say no, but just as we were in the car thinking about where to try next, they ran to let us know that they could accomodate us, which was excellent. The menu is not large (a very good thing), and all is home made. The beef burger is stunning. Obviously home made, almost no fat or filler, just good meat, served with the best chips I have had in ages. Crisp, light and piping hot. My partners spicy chichen burger should have simply said 'a full breast of chicken, well spiced and cooked to perfection and served as a burger' as that is what it was, Add great ales and lovely people, and you are on a winner.

All good, lovely pitchers of Exmoor Gold ale, nice chunky chips, effective if somewhat Kurt service at times from Ken!!

The heaters worked brilliantly! The beer was even better.

While this great trad village local is closed to visits because of COVID, Lin and Ken are doing excellent take-away meals. We had a steak and a burger, both excellent. They phone up just the right amount of time before it's ready to collect, so you arrive to chips and onion rings as hot, crisp and fresh as if they'd been served in the pub. Great job under the circumstances, although we're really looking forward to the time we can eat in!

Village Pub offering a large choice of takeaway food. We elected for Fish & Chips, mushy peas & coleslaw. We rang the order through, then Ken (landlord) rang us to say when it was ready. Easy to pay contactless - outside the pub (sadly!), food piping hot and delicious. Nice treat and change from home cooking on a freezing evening. Reasonably priced, well cooked and maybe lockdown not so bad after all....

Our local pub is hard to beat: open fire, friendly locals, delicious food, ales and wine and internet connection despite the rural location. You might even get a wolf whistle from Alfie the parrot. Covid secure with distanced tables and waitress service. Dogs welcome and wellies too.

Came to The Black Horse on a recommendation. It is a lovely local pub with a brilliant atmosphere and lots of lovely dogs to pet. I ordered a pie and it did not disappoint. Was a great pub meal and the staff were very attentive 🙂 would recommend this to anyone in the area!

Another fabulous night at The Black Horse. Vibrant and welcoming atmosphere and great to see all the proper precautions for Covid19. Felt safe and relaxed. Add to that the Cajun Chicken and Tempura Prawns were amazing although the fish and chips is always a winner too.

One of the best Sunday roasts we’ve eaten and fantastic, friendly service. Will definitely return again soon!

Friendly homemade food! Couldn’t recommend this pub more. Service was incredibly welcoming and the food was fresh, quality, homemade food and very accommodating. From the tikka masala to the pie of the day It did not disappoint.

We order a takeaway from the Black Horse (our local) for the family at least once a week, now that lock down has stopped any meals out for so long. It has been a very welcome change to have someone provide for us, especially as we have no access to supermarket delivery slots! Good variety, plenty for the vegetarians and the steak is delicious. Highly recommend.

Knowing that it was my birthday recently, the owners of the pub let me choose what I would like them to cook for my husband and myself which made me feel very special. The food was beautifully cooked, from the seabass to the steak. The puddings were tasty and I blew out the candle they had put in my pud and made a wish that we would soon be able to eat actually in their lovely pub.The reason for only 4 stars is simply that we had a take away meal rather than one in the pub, but I am sure that when we can go and eat in, I will be able to give the top rating.Thank you

We arrived after a very muddy walk. Welcomed by very friendly staff who forgave us for our muddy boots!The selection of ales is great. Ex or Gold, yums.Claasic Sunday roast, well cooked and presented and served by very lovely staff.Such a change from chain pubs.

Despite being a quiet time we were assured that food was available and it was! Well cooked and presented food. The menu is quite short (which is a good thing!) and there were specials (Chicken and asparagus pie and 2 sorts of curry). There was a good range of well-kept beer too. A great way to end a busy day!

We had just attended a funeral in the village and needed a warm up and a place to gather thoughts before travelling home. We were welcomed warmly from the moment we walked in. The other people in the pub were also keen to talk to us and extend the welcome. Nothing was too much trouble and they even stayed open for us to finish up drinks. Warm welcome, very accommodating, quintessential old English pub with a delightful old fireplace with a hot real fire. Just what we needed. Thank you

I recently visited this lovely pub for a skittles night with some friends. We had an excellent evening with some great food and an even better host. If your looking for something different to do i would highly recommend

My wife and I regularly go to pubs for an evening meal, usually on a Thursday or Friday. One of our ways of deciding if we will come back is to try their steak and chips, with salad or tomatoes, onions etc. We both enjoy a nice steak cooked as we have ordered it - a little less than medium. And are more interested in quality than quantity - a 170 grams/6 ounces is fine for us. Equally importantly we like hot and crispy chips that have been properly cooked. I am v pleased to report that we had our steak and chips a week or so ago at The Black Horse in West Tytherley and the streak was v good - tender, juicy, well cooked. The chips were outstanding - the best we have tasted in the UK in a long while, so 10 out of 10 for the lady who runs the pub with her husband and cooked the meal! We would thoroughly recommend that you make the trip out to West Tytherley to the Black Horse - particularly if you enjoy steak and chips!

We visited The Black Horse a couple of times while on holiday nearby. We found everybody friendly and welcoming towards us and our two large dogs. We didn't eat there but the food did look good. We have booked the same holiday next year, so we'll be back.

The Black Horse has always been a great local pub, and one of the reasons we came to live in this village. With Ken and Linda, the new managers, it’s in great hands: I’ve just had a great rump steak for lunch, and as ever, a great atmosphere in our lovely local. Recommended.

In short a very hostile atmosphere from the ‘regulars’, all old white men. If you are brown or black i would suggest going to another pub somewhere else.

Staying at Downs View Dairy, so a short 1.5m walk. Good selection of classic pub food and managed to fit in 4 adults and 5 kids. Overall a nice lunch.

Found the Black Horse by chance after driving through the New Forest on the way home from Bournemouth. We stopped for food and they were serving lunch at the time. They had a good choice on the menu and some great looking options on the specials board. We had our dog with us and as it was a nice day, decided to sit in the garden. The pub was bustling on Sunday and we were made to feel very welcome. The dog was also welcome inside but we wanted some fresh air.

Went for Sunday Lunch. 6 adults , we all had different meals and all had clean plates and there was good servings aswell . The service was excellent . Deffinatly worth a visit.

We turned up at 2 and luckily they were still serving food. Friendly pub with plenty of choice on the menu and quite a few specials. Me and hubby both had pie, game pie and a chicken pie. Both were very tasty and the portion was a good size.

Friday evening walk to the pub. Smashing meal! Great atmosphere and very friendly staff. Food was also delicious and prompt. With trivial pursuit cards on each of the tables there is great entertainment for all the family to join in on! Finally and most importantly, there is a good range of beers and ciders on tap

Quaint pub, rural location, very quiet place and friendly staff

West Tytherley is a secluded and pretty little village but the Jewell in the crown is the Black Horse. Vanessa and Nathaniel are the most accommodating and friendly landlords you could ever wish to meet. Nothing is too much trouble and their warm welcome is second to none. The food is always cooked to perfection and excellent value for money and will even do baked beans with the scampi when you have a fussy daughter They are kid friendly and dog friendly and all are very welcome. This is a great pub and you won’t be disappointed!!!

I phoned and booked a table a few days in advance. It ready and waiting for us when we arrived. Normally we go to our local The Silver Plough in Pitton. This was a wonderful alternative and we plan to go back very soon. We were warmly welcomed into the lovely bar area. The atmosphere was friendly and we enjoyed watching the logs burn in fire...nice and cosey!

Great food. Very welcoming pub for kids and dogs if you have either or both. Still has the feel of a traditional pub. Great ales and customers expect a bit of village quirky. Ladies toilets could definitely be improved. Can't comment on the men's.

Great little boozer out in the sticks with a good selection of ales and European lagers. Friendly staff, an open fire and a delicious game pie. Food is hearty and really tasty rather than fancy.

Turned up with out a booking on a Thursday night , it's a lovely full of character pub with a secluded restaurant area if you like the quieter life, but chose to eat in the bar , with the chat of the locals and the friendly staff,

Me he dado una clasificación de 3, porque según nuestra experiencia es normalito. Pub el edificio es muy bonito, está viejo y mucho de lo que cabe esperar de un pub del pueblo. Personal/propietarios eran amables y acogedores, lo que esperas. El menú estaba bien, con los típicos pub clásicos y algunos otros platos. La comida estaba bien preparada (teníamos la gambas y una hamburguesa) patatas fritas no eran caseras y la ensalada con la hamburguesa estaba cubierto de vinagre balsámico, que para mí fue extremadamente decepcionante, porque no me gusta y no había ninguna referencia a una ensalada vestidos en el menú. Decía que era una noche agradable y si vas con expectativas de que no te decepcionará.

En este pub nos últimos dos veces al día y decidimos vivir en un año después de pueblo cercano, para pagar una visita este pub para el almuerzo.

Amigos se reunieron en el pub village bien para comer el domingo. Comimos en una larga mesa de pino fregado en la atractiva zona de bar y elegimos nuestra comida de un menú apetecible que incluía asados. También hay una zona de restaurante si prefiere un ambiente más formal. Disfrutamos de la comida, bebidas y servicio amable y recomiendo este pub incondicionalmente.
