The service from staff was excellent and how they delt with the awfull comments of discrimination to disabilities to children with needs,as I was sat with my neice who’s brother is serverly disabled we felt intimidated by it.one other of the customers jumped up and said something to him trying to escalate it I feel the staff was very atentive and shut the situation down pretty well many thanks to them

Thought this would be a little gem that served home made old fashioned good food. Only absolutely nothing was home made.plus the food was greasy and tasteless.not cheap either. Never again.

Served by a very friendly woman who made you feel extremely welcome from the moment you walked in. Had the Sunday roast which was very tasty. The veg was even good which often goes amiss on a Sunday roast!

Lovely little pub with really laid back vibe, my second time here now and i enjoyed both times. Today I got a lovely fresh made omelette with salad and a refreshing pint of soft drink on tap for under a tenner which felt like a bargain tbh. The garden is lovely to sit in with your dog with lots of tucked away tables and beautiful flowers. Also a small play area for kids.

Excellent family meal. The ‘Black Horse’ burger was to die for. The Curry smelt amazing and they serve the best perfect chips. Compliments to the Chef, Well Played!

We came on a Sunday for some good honest pub grub sitting outside in the garden before the match. We had Scampi, chips and mushy peas and a chicken burger with chips. Both were absolutely delicious, perfect chips, well cooked scampi, massive slices of succulent chicken breast and a little side crisp salad with coleslaw. Simple pub food but done absolutely excellently. The service was friendly and efficient, Debbie was welcoming and friendly as always.

I like this place for a beer and meal in the evening. The (many) real ales appear aimed at the ‘Camra crowd’, nothing wrong with that, although my interest is in the condition and quality of the beer which ends up in the glass, not quite the same thing. Happily, this was good. Why the rating? Well, it would have been even lower were it not for the quality of the beer and general friendliness of the staff. The food was poor. Chicken Curry (lacked proper flavour and on the dry side) served on a cold plate with an ‘imported’ Garlic Naan (the menu just said naan, and I don’t like the garlic ones) and a portion of seriously undercooked rice which also managed to be watery and unseasoned. They do know how to cook here; I’ve had good pies etc here and I’m amazed that a dish as poor as this came from the same kitchen. I hope it’s just an off-day; if not, they’d be well advised to go back to the drawing board with the curry.

At the end of a walk along the Lea Navigation from Rye House to Hertford, we headed for The Black Horse since it appears regularly in the Camra Good Beer Guide. We were greeted by a friendly welcome and a fine range of real ales. We'd already decided to have a meal in the pub - I opted for their mixed grill while my wife had one of their pies - both being excellent to say the very least!

Spend Saturday afternoon in the pub. Needed somewhere with footy and a place for the kids. This pub has it all. Service was great, food was superb and the feel of the place was excellent. Chef was really chatty and never fazed even though he had a barbecue to organise and cook less than 20 mins after he’d cooked our meals (6 adults, 4 kids).Drove past it many times. Won’t drive past any more!

Having recently arrived in Hertford I was looking out for a friendly Pub where you could go in either for a beer or two or a meal and being a ‘solo’ looking for somewhere you didn’t stick out! I found it here some of the best Ales I’ve drunk in many years - six ales - rotating all the time so always a different choice... An excellent menu where you can ensure you don’t eat the same thing time and time again... It’s become my new ‘local’ and much much more - I recommend this place to all Singles Couples Groups Families etc...

Great pub. Its rare these days you come across gems like this and we'll be back. I aint into those 'Weatherspoons' theme pubs or whatever they are. Individuality is the name of the game - having said that I'm not sure if this is a chain or not. Few beers, good company who knows! The Beer was good, the food lovely. Staff were great - this is the stuff pubs are made off.

Just been back for our second visit this week, a beautiful traditional pub, lovely staff and amazing home cooked meals which really are a credit to the chef. We both had Ploughman’s on the first visit and just had home made quiche, new potatoes and salad (brilliant for a warm summer day) and gammon, eggs and chips. Lots of choices of ales and everything you could wish for. A very hospitable hostelry.

Great Community conscious pub, great selection of ales and friendly atmosphere a careful balance of food, families, sport and occasional music, I ran a folk club there for many years and it is the perfect place for us to have a drink after the Hertford Town football match which is situated close by. It also has its own rugby team.

This generally, is not the type of pub l go to but, if you want atmosphere and you love Rugby..... pop in here with a few friends on Rugby day and you are guaranteed to have an absolutely fantastic time....[depending if England win of course ] if you look at the photos submitted [3]..this will say all......its not grand in any way ...it is what it is.... l do not wish to undermine this establishment in the slightest, l have a soft spot for The Black Horse because of the many times l have been here. They serve great beers and they are kept well and all beverages are served with a smile, Great credit to this pub, its slightly out from the town.... [good thing...bad thing.? ] All said and done, it is a dog friendly pub, and summer time in the garden is just perfect, l have had plenty of good ale in the garden with friends after a dog walking session, so l have a long connection with this pub...They are always accommodating and make you very welcome indeed.. ITS A GREAT CLASSIC PUB.... .BLACK HORSE YOU HAVE MY SUPPORT.....5 STAR.

We went for lunch before a show at the Hertford Theatre. There were five adults, one child, one toddler and a dog. We were all made very welcome by the staff and a high chair was provided for the toddler very quickly. The menu is typical pub grub with extras such as game pie. The childrens menu is very good. All food is home cooked.Three of us had home made burgers the other adult dishes were an omelette and the soup of the day. The child had fish goujons. All food was very tasty and very well presented. The toddler's food, which we had brought with us, was warmed up for him in the kitchen. Very much appreciated. There is a good range of real ales plus major brands. The ales we sampled were very good. Highly recommended.
