Just had a very tasty Beef Sunday roast here and I couldn’t fault anything about it. Everything was cooked to perfection and the gravy was so tasty too. Had a strawberry cheesecake for desert which was also delicious. The service was excellent and everyone was really friendly. Think this is my new favourite place for a Sunday roast 🤤. Highly recommended!

Lovely cosy pub with a funny name

Booked in a large group for my Mothers birthday, nice food and great service, staff were very helpful.

first off mothers day menu changed without warning which shouldnt be allowed the roast was bland turkey was bland and tasted watered down brisket tasted over cooked and watered down like these 2 meats was left ages and moisture to them the chicken was dry and bland only the was nice and had flavour was the chicken skin, carrots, roasties and gravy and best thing was dessert also diapointed that no normal coke on tap only over priced bottles so ended up paying over priced for a bottle of cider at £5.05 i was shocked when i seen that price on bill also hair was on 1 on the cheese cakes which they replaced and gave it for free last time tub to take food home was greasy and dirty it had like dirty water or something in them

Popped in here with our little lab puppy after a nice forest walk - most loveliest pub I have ever been to! Everyone was so welcoming, service was incredible and the food was really nice. We are definitely coming back again!!

Absolutely lush, me and my boyfriend visited castle coch and had lunch/early dinner at the inn after, we had the haddock/chips and chicken/cranberry burger followed by cheesecake and the best sticky toffee pudding ever. They were very busy but worked as a great team and their manager could not do enough for us or the people around us. Great beer, great service, great food and atmosphere. They even gave us a free beer from another customer changing their mind! 10/10 would recomend.

Wonderful dinner on Sunday. The mashed swede and cabbage are gorgeous and the meat was cooked to perfection. I hadn't had a Sunday lunch here for years before Covid. I will be returning very soon. Staff were fab considering how busy it was. I would recommend booking 😉

We booked for 3pm for a Sunday roast. The dinner was fantastic especially the veg we had mashed swede and cabbage which is my absolute favorite also peas and carrots(note to staff,please keep the swede and cabbage it's gorgeous)I had mixed meats and all the meats were cooked to perfection. Beautiful gravy. We will definitely be back ❤

Lovely pub, stopped at after a good walk. The food was great and the beer.

We were passing a couple of weekends ago and decided to call in for drinks. The pub was very busy with most tables occupied by diners. Firstly, having ordered my drink, the barman nearly dropped my pint all over me, catching the top of a tap when handing it to me, some of which did land on my coat. Whilst he did apologise, for some reason he also found it slightly amusing... Secondly, we managed to find a large table close by the entrance door and sat down to enjoy our drinks. Some 15 minutes later a waitress approached us to say the table was reserved and asked us to move. There was nothing on the table to say the table was reserved and our only option was to sit by the empty fireplace, sitting upon seats that had been climbed upon by a couple of little darlings, whose parents did absolutely nothing to stop them, neither did any of the staff. The people occupying our table were embarrassed and apologised for us having to move but it wasn't heir fault, staff should have reserved the table in the normal way. We drank up and left, this being the second poor experience we have had at this pub. The owner behaves as if she is doing you the favour by serving you. The staff are rushed-off their feet catering to eaters and, frankly, if you just want drinks you are treated almost like lepers! This used to be a traditional pub, in which you had a friendly greeting, a welcoming fire after a walk, walkers with well-behaved dogs and a great selection of ales in a convivial atmosphere. However, this has been replaced by a surly attitude, cold uninviting atmosphere, little room to enjoy a traditional pint and kids treating the area as a playground with parents allowing them to run amok. Far too many pubs are going this way and concentrating more on the dining side rather than what a pub should be known for. There are nicer places to drink in and I think some of the replies from the owner mirror this. Won't be affording them the benefit of the doubt next time and will take our custom elsewhere, two poor experiences is more than enough.

Decent pub meal and draught Guinness to die for.

Absolutely delicious Sunday roast and a great dessert. Super dog friendly pub which is a great spot to stop on a Sunday dog walk. Will be returning soon.

If you haven’t tried it then you should! It’s a comfortable country pub setting. The Sunday lunch here is stunning. A great selection of freshly cooked vegetables, tasty freshly roasted meat and equally tasty roast parsnip and crispy roast potatoes. Comes with a generous helping of meat gravy, home made Yorkshire pudding and meat stuffing. The cauliflower cheese dish is well worth it too. The service is lovely, staff are friendly and very helpful. We had the grandchildren with us and nothing was too much trouble. Children’s menu and other dishes available if you want them. Good variety of drinks and real ale. Dogs are welcome in the bar area. Well worth a visit, certainly one of our favourites, book in advance to ensure you get in!

Lovely friendly staff and very welcoming. It was also nice and warm on a cold evening trying to find somewhere new to eat. Dishes were substantial however the menu is quite limited.

Up a narrow mountain road on Caerphilly Mountain through damp dreary weather to this popular JL pub, lucky that we booked ahead! The curry of the day (chicken), was excellent, butcher' faggots properly meaty, and the beer and wine top notch. Service was pleasant and efficient, value for money good,and the manager remembered our hosts, who had only visited a couple of times inthe last two years. Certainly on this occasion, top marks!

Hi I never write reviews but the food was absolutely lovely even if it was American burger x2 ,probably the best I’ve had .Also the staff were fantastic as well 👍👍

I had the lamb shank with mash, peas and beef dripping gravey, Mam had scampi and chips while my wife had festive burger. All the food was cooked to perfection and the service impeccable. Highly recommended pub for great service, atmosphere and food.

Don’t bother. Every time we have attempted to eat here we have had to deal with surly staff. No deviating from a set menu even for dietary requirements, waiting ages for bog standard food, no understanding if booking numbers alter, even after paying deposit… Never again.

Great food, 10 person party all enjoyed the meal when it eventually arrived busy day I guess so 45 minute wait after ordering, food was fresh, tasty and good portions, super pint of beer also 😊 Will definitely visit again next time I'm in Cardiff 👍🏻

Lovely country pub with lovely food

Glad we booked as the pub was full when we arrived at 2.30pm. 1, 2 or 3 course lunches were available. Very tasty Sunday roast dinner. Staff were friendly.

Had a very nice meal here earlier today. Only noticed the ribs on the specials board when going up to order food. They were very nice, the only downside was they could have done with a steak knife and bigger plate.

Never been here before but I will definitely go again. Popped in with my husband and our friend hoping to get a warm bowl of soup. We were served a bowl of the best soup I've had in a long time. It was absolutely delicious and served with a good chunk of warm and crusty bread. The service was fast and friendly and the pub was lovely and warm. I highly recommend this pub.

We arrived at the Black Cock Inn, my girlfriend and I , at midday. We never booked a table so just turned up which was no problem, we just got shown to a table. My girlfriend ordered the lasagne and I ordered the curry of the day. We did not wait long for our meals to arrive. The portions were perfect, not too small and not too big. We both enjoyed the meal which were tasty, and did feel like they were freshly cooked. Gina our waitress who was also serving behind the bar, was exceptional very friendly and helpful. She always checked we were ok with the meal and made sure we were happy. We were so happy with the service, we did leave a tip, and would return again. Thank you.

Haven't been there for a few years we had Sunday roast. 2 brisket beef 2 turkey all 4 absolutely beautiful, yorkies spot on. Our 2 teenagers had desert, waffle and sticky toffee pudding both said was lovely. 10 out of 10 won't be leaving it a few years again!!!

Food was stunning I recommend the Korean chicken burger. I had chocolate fudge cake for dessert it was a massive slice. Lovely place friendly staff I can't wait to go back

Absolutely fabulous Sunday lunch and very friendly staff. Loved it 10/10. My daughter and I booked a table in the bar as the restaurant was fully booked. Surpassed expectations with food and service. I had a king drive afterwards and was happy to have had a great meal out, relatively cheaply, before returning home to West Wales. Highly recommended. Thank you Black Cock Inn

Never disappointed with this place. Roast dinners are so popular and there's a reason for that - absolutely delicious. Service friendly and efficient, excellent value for money. Would recommend.

Spent a pleasant evening with family here last Saturday, food was ok but nothing special. When leaving we were accused of not paying our bill and made to feel dishonest. Staff were rude, and unwilling to apologise once receipts were shown for our paid bills. Side orders and sauces were paid for, but not served to the table. No refund offered. The whole situation was completely embarrassing and uncomfortable! Will not be returning, or recommending this place to anyone.

Excellent pub and easy to get to , lovely old country pub what more could you wish for. Staff even came outside to offer my dogs biscuits "I was left out" .

Walked in with no reservation, fully booked inside but made some room for us outside. Their hot chips are the best.

Definitely wouldn't recommend on a Sunday (we have been previously a while back and it was fine but today was terrible). We booked a table for 3pm on a Sunday, arrived just before 3-it was busy but there were seemingly a fair few staff and we were seated fairly quickly after a bit of table cleaning. We waited until around 3.20 before we had to prompt them to give us a menu. They eventually took our order around 3.45 and it didn't arrive until well gone 4.30. Basically 1.5 hours from arriving to getting food! If we hadn't put our card against the booking we would have left. To top it off, instead of serving me my ordered potato and leek soup, they served me up a bacon and cheese sauce in a soup dish- I refused it as I'm vegetarian. To be fair to them they comped our starters and one of the main courses but there was zero apology or acknowledgement of the their service being well below par. People were seated after us and ate two courses before we had even had our food! Terrible.

Decent home cooked food. Never had a bad meal. Best Sunday dinner I’ve had and I’ve had a few! Service can be a bit slow sometimes (due to busyness) but always pleasant staff.

We were seated immediately with no fuss and had our drinks quickly thereafter. The food was also beautiful and served quickly. There was an incident where two rowdy males tried to ignite a situation with me and another guest with me. We didn't even need to complain, before we were even able to, the problem was handled and the rowdy guys were asked to drink up and leave. It was the first time anywhere that the staff stepped in without being asked to. It was really comforting. Also got to cuddle a staff members sausage dogs so that was great. 10/10 staff and service.

An incredible pub. Though I strongly recommend you book a table in advance. Dogs are welcomed. The food is wonderful. Beef brisket we had.. superb. Staff attentive, be warned busy, so be patient and politeness to the Staff doesn't cost anything!!!

Great country pub with nice food

We stopped here as 2 couples, 2 babies and 2 dogs after a long walk in the forest. We couldn’t wait to have some food as last time we visited we ordered a bunch of starters which we enjoyed. Our friends went in and were able to order chips, when we went in we were told we couldn’t order any starters for outside and it was ‘Only what’s on the blackboard’ I couldn’t understand what the difference was considering inside diners were allowed to order anything they liked, the meals on the blackboard were far bigger than the 1 or 2 starters we were hoping for. Also chips were not on the blackboard on their own and our friends had managed to order them? The reaction from one of the staff members was unnecessary, one woman in particular with blonde hair in her 40-50’s came across incredibly rude and had a really bad attitude. The way she speaks to people is really quite poor. Don’t forget we’re paying customers and speaking to your customers poorly leaves poor reviews like this. This isn’t the first time we picked this up and picked up on the attitude last time however we thought we’d let it go. After this time I decided if she couldn’t speak to us nicely I didn’t want to pay a penny more. I wouldn’t be interested in coming back unless some manners were achieved and basic training on how to speak to customers was completed. I look forward to seeing the response, as I’ve read other reviews and noticed the venue do not take criticism well and usually reply insulting the reviewer. Which proves my point.

Sadly, we didn’t enjoy lunch here. I was initially put off by the 3 star hygiene rating but my husband convinced me it was lovely the last time he ate here. We walked in via the bar and there was a cat walking across the tables! We’re animal lovers, we have a dog & often take him to dog friendly venues. The cat was beautiful but I think it’s inappropriate for an animal to be walking across tables where people are eating. My husband could tell I felt uncomfortable and asked if I wanted to go somewhere else but I decided to stay and hope my 1st impression was wrong. We ordered from the 2 course lunch menu. The starters were nice but the main meal was terrible. Our chips were only just cooked with some still hard. I ordered chicken which was tough and dry. I barely touched this course and was grateful I enjoyed my starter. My husband ordered a chicken baguette with blue cheese (according to the menu) but it came out with a cheese slice! The presentation was awful and he left half of the meal, something he never does! The waiter (a young man) was really lovely. The only positive to our trip. We paid £48 for this lunch which was a waste. Sadly, we won’t return.

Very dissatisfied with service and food choices 50th birthday ruined telephoned and not happy with the response will never come to this pub again 3 out 9 had upset stomach food inedible due to not being cooked thoroughly 0 out of 10 for service and manager needs to work on her customer service skills !! My family and I visited her last Sunday. Isn’t staff dress code a thing here? There was a member of staff who was dressed in a skimpily short, spotty play suit and every time she bent down to clear tables we did not know where to look 🙈 Also, our Sunday beef roasts were to die for as always but when we questioned a member of staff as to where the roast parsnips were (as this is our fave part of our dish, apart from my hubby’s) we were told that the chef had put them on our plates and that they were little round things? We know what parsnips look like so were left feeling humiliated!!! Had they been on our plates my hubby would have given me his as hates them. They were definitely not there so we asked if we could order some and pay extra even though we were lied to but were told that they had run out of them. So, all in all the waiting staff made out that we were lying but they were lying as they had none. Totally unacceptable on all levels. Also, when we made our reservation over the phone we chose the restaurant with no dogs as the bar area has dogs and one member of our family has allergies to dogs. There were two elderly ladies with a chitzu dog sitting at the table at the top of the stairs in the restaurant. This is wrong on all levels. Why offer us a table in the restaurant area with no dogs when there are dogs? What was once our favourite place to eat for a Sunday lunch is now our least favourite form our last visit here.

Our favourite local pub ❤️ the best food and staff!

Had a lovely Sunday lunch at this pub earlier in the year and on the back of that we returned for another family Sunday lunch gathering. Again we were not disappointed as the food was plentiful and excellent quality. The staff were friendly and efficient and we all had an excellent Sunday family meal.

Visited on July 2nd and been meaning to write a review. We were let down by another restaurant and came there to see if they could squeeze us in. Initially they said no so we left and understood it's a busy Sunday lunchtime. They ran out after us to the car park and said they could fit us in which as it was my mam's 70th we were thrilled with. The staff were super efficient and the food was amazing and served so quickly. We will definitely be back. Thanks for a great meal and great service.

Myself, my partner and our two large size dogs (Husky & German Shepherd) visited recently. We didn’t have a booking- regardless, we received a warm welcome and we’re offered a seat in the dog friendly area inside. Unfortunately, my dog isn’t always dog friendly. When I shared my concern, I was fully expecting to sit outside, and even a bit weary that I’ll be asked to leave with a larger dog that is temperamental towards other dogs. We were seated by a window with enough space to keep my dog away from other dogs. Our food was amazing, we both had the burger and home made chips and a pint Guinness. Everything was fresh, everything was delicious 🤤. The dogs were spoiled with complimentary dog treats. The staff were all friendly, all helpful, never stoping but always making time to be courteous, or fuss the furry friends that were around. Wonderful experience from start to finish.

This was possibly the worst meal I’ve had in a long time . The chips were inedible , brown soggy cold . The fish was acceptable but not great . You had to queue to give your order in a very small space that was near the opening so a lot a shuffling about . Glad to leave

Dined here as 5 adults and 2 children on a Saturday night recently. Overall, a nice looking pub, nice outdoor play area for the children and friendly staff. However, I found the food to be very average, I opted for goats cheese starter which was lovely, then the hake for main which was very dry and over cooked. I’m sorry to say this but on this occasion, I felt as though I could get better food in a chain restaurant such as Brewer’s Fayre. It was a very busy evening though and perhaps this is why. Would return for a second try. The cat coming in to the restaurant was a highlight for us and my little niece loved that but I don’t think that happens on the regular!

Unfortunately food was not good. We had soggy chips, greasy batter on the fish , inedible gammon, no garlic bread or chocolate ice cream. Very disappointing.

Whilst ordering food at the bar with other customers around and eating, there was a big noise from kitchen as if something had been dropped a member of staff in the kitchen shouted on her top of her voice "Oh my f**king god" certainly not what you expect while out for a meal.

Had to wait 10 mins to be served yet I was the only customer in the bar?

Very disappointed today food was far too salty and potatoes black . Table booke for 2 pm left at 4.30 we were not prepared to wait another 2 hours for dessert we waited nearly 2 hours for our main meal Ruined my birthday

Not a bad little pub. First impressions reasonably clean but when we took menus out of the menu holder on the table quite a few spiders ran for the hills! Food OK. Fishcake deep fried to oblivion but the gammon steak was nice even if the chips were soggy and oily. Cheesecake was lovely because it was shop bought. Service very slow but felt sorry for the staff as one was learning and the other trying to manage both bars and the food service. They were both lovely girls and were coping well under pressure. Whilst waiting to pay had a good view of the kitchen. Rubbish and food all over the floor, dirty dishes and a filthy broom! And as we were standing there the hygiene inspector was attempting to get access to the kitchen. All in all not bad for the price but probably wont be going back.

Met up with an old friend and enjoyed a deliciously cooked meal in a quiet area of the bar where we chatted for 3 hours! Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere.

The only issue was my chicken burger, the meat was solid and quite rubbery which put me off eating most of it, the accompaniments were nice as well as the salad and sauce. I think the burger was a one off so will try something else next time. Reasonably priced.

Nestled amonst gorgeous ancient woodland, this pub is a bit of a gem. Certainly could do with getting more local beers in (the closest was Cornwall!) but the garden was a welcome stop off route on our hiking journey! Staff were especially friendly and helpful. Would certainly recommend if you find yourself in this part of the world.

You best book here or you might not get a table. Not cheap, but good quality. Good service.

Location was lovely but food was what I can only describe as cafe quality, not what I expected compared to other venues. We had to keep going to the bar to ask for drinks and deserts rather than someone coming to be table. I hope they can improve the food quality and staff a bit more attentive as the location deserves it.

Absolutely gorgeous roast dinner

Went on Easter Sunday. The meal I chose was roast beef dinner and I was not disappointed. My mother has dementia and eats quite little, they have a child portion on an adult plate so she wouldn't notice. Lovely staff.

Delightful burgers - the presentation isn't fancy but they are incredibly well cooked. Lovely down to earth Welsh pub with a car park and outside seating (under a marquee - this is wet Wales after all) in the summer.
