The Bishop Blaize in Richmondshire

My husband and I wanted different things for Sunday lunch hence we chose this pub. I ordered a lamb dinner whilst he ordered a hot beef sandwich. Whilst we were waiting, another customer complained about gristle in the lamb so I asked if I could change to beef and was told no as the chef had already prepared my meal. I asked her to make sure the lamb had no gristle. What was I served? A plate of gristle! The roasties were nice, the mash was ok and the Yorkshire pudding passable. The broccoli was mush, the carrots overcooked and the red cabbage bland. There was a solitary parsnip on the plate, although it looked cooked it was raw. My husband’s chips, not roasties as stated on the menu, were nice. The beef was inedible. We were told the chef served it medium. A good vet would have been able to revive it! Chef obviously doesn’t realise topside cannot be treated in the same way as sirloin! We left our food. We joined the queue to pay where several other people were complaining about the food, one said he would speak to Will, presumably the owner. I asked for a reduction on the bill - I was told no, they couldn’t authorise it. I said I would leave my contact details as I did not want to pay for the meal we hadn’t had. There were no managers available. I was accused of trying to steal!! I paid the bill and we left still hungry. The main staff in this establishment have no customer service skills whatsoever, are confrontational and unable to accept criticism. The chef needs replacing immediately and perhaps a visit from Environmental Health is on order - if chef can get a simple meal so wrong, what else is wrong behind the scenes?

Lovely bar to drink in. Emily and trica are absolutely amazing and so friendly towards everyone. If fact they make the pub what it is.

Came here a few weeks back with our dog and baby, it has loveliest bar and snug area with a fire! We got a sunday roast and could not fault it at all, alongside the service! Every member of staff were friendly but our server in particular made us feel so welcome and was the nicest girl, also brought out treats for our dog and made a fuss of him! So nice, we aren’t from the area but we will definitely be back when we visit again even just for the atmosphere and service alone! Thankyou x

Enjoyed a light lunch. Lovely cosy place to be.

Popped in for a quick drink after work and couldn’t resist trying the food after seeing the menu. I ordered the Brie and cranberry starter, my husband ordered the Arancini. For Main I had King prawn linguine and my husband ordered the chicken supreme. Wow! Portion sizes very generous, great presentation and more importantly the food arrived hot and really delicious. We dined in the snug next to the log fire and really enjoyed the evening. Will definitely be back, what a hidden gem this place is, well done to the Chef and staff who made us welcome and filled us up on great home cooking!

Staff are super Frendly, and food is top notch with Sunday dinner being the best around, so book early to get your tabel.

Wonderful pub run by husband and wife team. Husband excellent chef, wife front of house. Good food, friendly informative staff. Tales of the supernatural included. Sadlyonly got until 18th December until change of management Definitely recommend

Tried this pub for the first time for a Sunday lunch having only been in for a drink before, and it hit the mark, very reasonably priced and couldn't fault anything, only ordered small ones and it was more than enough for us.

Very good service and the food was very good. See you next year.

Stayed one night and the place was amazing. Reasonable prices for a major night and breakfast was perfect!!! Will be staying again.

We ate our lunch here yesterday and was very impressed with what we ordered I had steak and ale pie served with carrots cauliflower broccoli and homemade chips good size portion my wife ordered lasagna with bistro salad and garlic bread again good sized portion we ate in the bar has we had our dog with us and the pub is dog friendly which is good the lady that served us was very friendly plus a nice atmosphere

This gem of a pub offers the Very best locally sourced home cook Sunday lunch and is without a doubt the best in Richmond town. I have eaten here on numerous occasions and believe me it never disappoints. Meat and vegetables are cooked to perfection with delicious home cooked Yorkshire’s. Large quality portions but with a choice of a small lunch for those with a smaller appetite.. The best Sunday roast by far and extremely well priced.

I went here last week for a group dinner (16 of us, I believe). We got excellent service from the staff and the food was very tasty. My partner has a gluten intolerance and the GF menu did seem a bit limited but she still found food which she enjoyed. We would definitely consider going here again.

Just had Christmas meal for 2nd year. Amazing meal everything was perfect. Fresh cooked perfect temperature. Excellent quality. Vert friendly staff lovely atmosphere in warm cosy pub .dog friendly. Will be back next year .

Called in and managed to get a table. Sunday lunch was lovely and such good value. Generous portions and two choices for vegetarians and a vegan option Great that you can take dogs in. Staff very friendly

We had booked the day before, to eat at 5pm. It had been read wrong in the diary n we had been expected af 3pm!. Anyway, even though the chef had closed everything down, our booking was honoured. Was so impressed by this. The lady who dealt with us was amazing!! Very friendly and attentive, even came and said bye to us at the end of her shift. The food was also amazing, homecooked and fresh, definitely plentiful. And very reasonably priced. The bar was trimmed up for Halloween and the bar staff were dressed up accordingly, ready for the live entertainment. Was nice to end our time there with a pleasant chat with Lucy before we left. Would highly recommend this place and definitely will be returning ☺️.

It's absolutely perfect, nice atmosphere, great people and very, very tasty food!!!! Over and over again....I'm an allergy sufferer, really absolutely fresh and perfect food.....gladly again as soon as we're back in England....LG Steffi and Martin, Alea,Sarah,Mal and Mary...

The Bishop Blaize is an old public house with rooms at the top of Richmond Square It is well run by Tracy and Mark It gets its trade from locals and visitors alike and can be very busy especially at weekends The beers etc are very well kept and the food is exceptional, fresh produce cooked to order Tracy and Mark are extremely helpful and friendly and this is also shown by their staff. We have stayed a few times and the rooms are clean and comfortable if a little old but this part of the ambience of the place Keep it going Tracy and Mark

Nothing is to much trouble for the friendly staff. Food is great and very reasonably priced. Very clean. Only lunch food though, no evening food.

Called in impromptu and so glad we did. Tracy was a lovely host and the food was delicious homemade chips and lovely carrot and Corriander soup. Will definitely call again.

Have just had a most delicious Sunday lunch but as nice as it was it doesn't compare to the welcome myself and my husband received especially has we took our rottweiler dog with us and there were so accommodating for us we ordered a chicken dinner for her and there didn't question it and even provided a dog bowl for her lunch to go in she totally enjoyed her treat so a huge thank you

Such a warm welcome when we walked in from the rain looking for lunch. Good service- very friendly, accommodating and helpful to my little one when he asked for pizza. The waitress offered us the 2 for £12 special when we both asked for fish and chips, which we hadn’t noticed, and explained the portion size was a bit less that a main meal size. It was still plenty and nice, fresh crispy battered fish too. Very reasonable prices! Thank you!

Bar staff miserable and not friendly.

Great food and service. We arrived as a party of 11, the landlady said there was only one chef so we thought we'd have a long wait. But alas no, it was super speedy service. Worth a visit!

The waitress was very friendly and offered the dogs a biscuit. They have a limited menu on a Sunday but that was fine as we wanted a roast dinner. My mum’s chicken came with bacon wrapped round it but it was quickly swapped for one without. A lot of the tables were reserved so go early if you don’t book a table.

Called in on a rainy day on the off chance of some food and had an unexpectedly good omelet! Served by a friendly young girl behind the bar and a reasonable final bill. What's more not to like!

Had lunch in here today. The food was excellent and reasonably priced and the premises were very clean (including the toilets). My husband and I both had a ham and cheese toasty which was served with salad and we ordered one potion of chips to share. The large toasties were delicious and the chips were plentiful and scrumptious. We also had a pot of tea for 2 which was refilled at no extra charge. The young lady who was serving was friendly and helpful. Our total bill was £12.15 and we noticed a specials board offering a range of meals at 2 for £12. We’ll certainly eat here again when visiting Richmond.

We are now retired, so any sunny day is an excuse for a car journey and Richmond was today’s destination. We strolled around the Market Place looking for inspiration for our lunch and settled on this traditional pub, expecting to grab a quick toastie. The landlady, Tracey, was very welcoming despite being run off her feet. The dining room was quite busy for a Thursday lunchtime, but the service was relatively quick. We noticed a specials board offering “Golden Oldies” 2 x main meals for £10* from a selection of the menu, so we ordered steak and ale pie with chunky chips and vegetables. All dishes are made to order, so don’t expect fast food, but do expect a very good pub meal, because that’s what we got. The home made pie was delicious, full of tender steak, and topped with pastry that melted in our mouths. The chunky chips were just amazing, and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. I mentioned the Golden Oldies meals were 2 for £10, but also overheard a single gentleman being offered his Golden Oldies meal for £5.Summary: lovely pub, Tracey is a star, good choice on the menu, fresh home cooked food at affordable prices. We will be back!

We called in to The Bishop Baize totally on spec while walking through Richmond. We were pleased to find that they were still serving food (2:15pm), they serve until 3. My wife had beef lasagna and I had a beef burger, both meals arrived within 10 minutes and were relatively tasty. No complaints at all from us. We weren’t drinking much, lager shandy as a refreshing option. All drinks were icy cold, just what we needed on a hot day. Reasonable prices for food and beer, we will be back when we’re passing again.

Very pleasant landlady, Tracey was very helpful when my wife cut her leg getting out of the car. The drinks were served ice cold and were competitively priced. I would certainly recommend this establishment.

Called for lunch before setting back to our car which ran out on the meter in an hour …ordered drinks sat down with menu and 15 minute later no one had come to take our order..so having no time to eat before we had to be back at the car left .

One of the best dining out experiences of our holiday. Great service, very tasty and generous portions of home cooked food. A somewhat understated exterior view but that adds to the charm, you won’t be disappointed once you step inside. Well worthy of the five stars.

Golden oldies menu - Fish & Chips with Mushy Peas, Steak & Ale Pie, Sauté Potatoes, Cauliflower, Broccoli & Carrots, both dishes were served piping hot, good sized portions - £10.00 !! Nice friendly helpful staff. We have eaten here a few times, each time has been as good as the last.

The roast dinner was delicious and dogs can eat inside at the bar. They were happy to make adjustments to the order and the service was good.

Just called to grab a lunch and we were greeted by a very jolly lady who was keen for our custom. good pub grub menu. i had Fish and Chips and hubby had Steak and Ale Pie. Both were good portions and with drinks cost under £20. Bargain

The Bishop Blaize is a lovely local pub with a very traditional bar and lounge area. It then has a dining area at the rear which is very different. My wife and I had a good, reasonably priced meal at 6.15 p.m. even though they normally stop serving at 5.00pm. They had served later as several people had asked for food...a very accommodating, flexible way of operating. I would also mention that they have a "beer garden" at the back with a great back drop of Richmond Castle keep. We enjoyed their hospitality.
