The layout of this cafe is so much better now the counter with the cakes and coffee machine is in the front room. We only went so I could have a quick machiatto, and I thought the drink was expertly prepared. It was generous and hot and the price was good. When I finished I looked closer at the paintings and went down the stairs to see more. Someone working in the back could see we liked them and she was friendly and informative. I wish I could go back with enough time for cake as well because they looked tasty and it's a very nice place to be

Lovely food but surprisingly expensive. £25.50 for two salads and half a quiche each (we shared a single portion) - no drinks. The salads were supposedly large but I'd say that's a subjective description up for debate. I'd recommend though if you've got the cash to spare.

Not sure what's happened to this place as last year we enjoyed a lovely coffee and cake. However, yesterday morning was a disappointment. I ordered a cheese scone. Looked nice enough but when it came to eat it, it was stale and having been warmed up in a microwave, it was chewy. I asked for a refund on the scone which I received before leaving. If you are paying £3.50 for a scone, it should be freshly baked that day otherwise sell it for half price and tell customers. Won't be returning to this place again. Has it changed hands in the past few months?

Happy to take your money and send you away with take away cups but not let you sit outside if you are not local. When we politely enquired if we can have coffee and a cake we were told you can but you have to take it away because we are closed. This we happily did and asked if we could sit outside to be told no we’re closed. It is somewhat galling, to walk past 15 minutes later and see people who were behind us in the queue, sitting there being served with coffees teas and cakes. I do wonder if they were local? They certainly gave that impression. Really disappointed in you, we have eaten at this CAFE half a dozen times and will think again before we do again.

Lovely quaint place that fitted in well with Chagford, a real asset. After many shares from a relative that visits regularly, we decided to pop by on our day out on the moors. They provide the perfect option to takeaway, doing a ‘picnic deal’ (for ~£10) of a wide choice of generously filled baguette, amazing selection of freshly baked cakes that the gentleman kindly explained (you could tell the great amount of passion they have for their business just from this alone) all of them, a packet of crisps and a drink. Visited three times during our recent stay. First day soon after arriving in Chagford we popped in just before 15:00 when they were closing but we got our order in and very tasty it was. Tuna and sweetcorn and a toasted bacon, brie and cranberry rolls came generously filled, very nice. Next visit; a sandwich and (half) cream tea to take away. I had the roll and wife had the scone with jam and clotted cream, I'm sure they tasted even better after stopping in the heart of the National Park to eat. Last visit was to buy some cheese scones to bring home. Can't comment on them as we popped them in the freezer as soon as we got home (bought for someone else). Only comment would be I thought £10 for four scones a bit steep.Nontheless, very nice rolls and scones from a very tiny cafe (current seating inside for 7 and two tables for 2-3 outside)

We had the most amazing beef baguettes; which came with a drink, crisps and slice of whichever cake we chose, all for £9.95. We have 2 young children and they happily whipped up a sarnie for them to share, filled with whatever we wanted. We found the Birdcage by chance, and popped in for a cream tea. Excellent value for a start - I had a "half" tea, while my partner had a full one (1 scone for me and 2 for him ☺️), costing £5 and £6 respectfully. The tea was loose leaf, in a proper pot, and strong enough to taste. The scones were freshly baked, obviously homemade and came slightly warm. Lashings of clotted cream and jam were served in a ceramic dish (no nasty peel-off plastic tubs), and the waitress offered extra cream and jam if needed when she delivered the plate (we didn't, but it was good to know). The crockery was delicate china and everything was scrupulously clean.
