A relaxation break in the small Cotswold village of Langford for three nights bed and breakfast at the delightful Bell Inn. Some of the bed rooms are in the block abutting the pub from which there was no disturbance. Accommodation: Our room #8 was a pleasant surprise being spacious, well equipped, warm, well decorated, adequately furnished for a short stay, and with a well appointed and spacious en-suite wet room. The village is very quiet, although there were a few aircraft in and out of RAF Brize Norton which were not a intrusive. Good value. Meals: Breakfasts - profuse display of fruit, cereals and associated accompaniments, excellent coffee, plus a fulsome menu of quality local components for breakfast were freshly cooked to order. Dinner: imaginative menus have been well reported by many diners and reviewers as being extraordinarily good and we thoroughly enjoyed all of the meals. Ambience: Rustic charm in and around The Bell, enhanced by the very hardworking "can do" staff who, as residential guests for a few days, we very much appreciated. Tip: the bar and dining area area very busy at weekends. Booking advised.

Sunday lunch - superb! Faultless food, friendly helpful efficient and well trained staff. But it is so GLOOMY! It’s fine to aim for subtle lighting to create an ‘atmosphere’ and if you were just going for a drink it would be fine. But to try and eat half tidily you do need to be able to see what’s on your plate, especially if it’s a whole partridge (delicious!) which needs dissection. We love this place but please shine a light on your glorious food - it deserves it!

The Bell is in a great location and makes all the right impressions when you pull into the car park and then step through the front door onto proper flagstones and sit down at proper tables. The menu has a broad selection to cater for all and a superb range of wines and ales. Service was efficient without being overbearing. We selected drinks while deciding on menu choices and once we’d ordered starters and mains didn’t have to wait too long for our first course to be served. The starters were 5* so we couldn’t wait for the mains to arrive. Again they were good ingredients well cooked and presented unfortunately though, 3 of the 4 mains were only warm at best, as were the sides, hence the 3 stars. We perused the desserts but decided that we’d had enough, then within 5 mins of this decision we were informed that the table was required back in 10 mins which we thought was a little zealous because if we’d have ordered desserts we’d probably been eating for at least another 25-30mins.

This is an unassuming little pub off the beaten track in a lovely Cotswold village with loads of charm and a welcoming open fire. First things first. We travelled an hour and a quarter to get here and meet friends and one of the main reasons I chose the place was because it had spotted dick on the menu. Not only that but it was served with cold custard - yum yum and more yum! That alone made it worth driving an hour and a quarter. Alas, when we arrived it was the first thing I asked the waitress and she said it was not on the menu. Dammit. I had the marrow bone flatbread which was good but very salty - luckily I love salty. My wife had the fish pie which looked appealing, was pronounced OK but had bones. The pizzas also looked great and apparently were. For dessert we all had a few spoonfuls of the chocolate nemesis which was rich and very chocolatey but not spotted dick with cold custard. What was cold was the espresso. Three of us ordered them and they arrived tiny, cold and tasted awful. After complaining three more arrived this time tiny, warm and tasted awful. The service was 50-50. One waitress charming and amusing, the other miserable and plainly wished she was elsewhere. The place was very busy. If I went back I'd phone ahead to see if the spotted dick was on the menu as that would just about swing it for me.

What a fun place to find! The pub atmosphere is very welcoming, the dark green walls really draw you into the cosy pub feel. My only disappointment was the service, they seemed very busy which was fair enough, but they weren’t the most friendly of waitresses, there were often times where they looked annoyed with one another too which dampened the mood a little. That being said, the food was great, we had pizza and steak, both cooked perfectly and the wine choice was an ample offering.

We heard from friends in Torquay that the Bell Inn was excellent. But after looking at the Trip Advisor ratings 4* we had doubts. We shouldn't have looked at trip advisor; the food was first class, properly prepared and cooked on the premises to a high standard. I had the Devilled Kidneys, exquisite. Calf's Liver the same. Green beans fresh, correct texture, superbly cooked. No freezer food here!

Stayed here for four nights, don't ever stay in room 3, above the kitchen right next to extractor fan, very noisy until 22.45, like being on a ship, I did eat here on the first night, food wasn't for me, expensive and not the best, advertised as parking but can not get in there always full of cars, it only holds about six, I am here on business and am up early so a good night's sleep means a lot to me. But not in this place, never again.

I haven't been there in 20 years and having read the recent reviews being in the area decided to stop for lunch. We had to ask them to turn down the music as we were the only ones in the pub and I have hearing problems. Took a few requests to get it down to a reasonable level and we had our lap tops out so they knew it was a business lunch. After that- everything perfection. We had 4 starters between us. Devilled kidneys on toast, scampi in a pint glass x 2 , three times cooked fat chips and mussels in a cider sauce. They were all piping hot and absolutely delicious and we couldn't finish the chips. Best kidneys I have eaten in a very long time. 2 soft drinks and 1/2 cider for £61.00 which in this day and age is quite reasonable. And the lovely waitress then at no extra cost showed me how to log my lap top onto my phone hot spot.( They have wifi, I was just going somewhere after that didn't). Really enjoyed a delicious working lunch in a lovely old country pub with a fire ( I know its only August but it was very welcome) in a beautiful part of the Cotswolds; all honeyed stone and rampant wisteria. My colleague who had never been to this part of the country before was enchanted and thought the food was the some of the best she had eaten. I just hope it doesn't get spoiled by all the good reviews.10/10

Bit disappointed with our visit to the Bell tonight. Pricey for the what it offered. £16 for a pizza and £9 for a tart pudding were expensive. The beef salad main as poor - just slices of cold beef (looked like Sunday dinner leftovers) with salad leaves pilled on top. The big let down was the service. Our waitress whilst proficient was pretty sullen, abrupt and unfriendly. The food was overall tasty but the puddings were a bit disappointing. The apricot and almond tart lacked flavour and ice creams were nothing special., Inside ambience was reasonable but could have been cosier.

Quaint Cotswold pub / restaurant, but nothing exceptional. A party of 6 of us ate here last Friday evening, most of the tables were occupied providing a very convivial atmosphere. The menu was limited and we all ate a different main course which everyone enjoyed but was nothing to write home about. Service was good but did not warrant the 12.5% service charge added to the bill.

My wife had padron peppers to start which were hot and very nice, followed this with steak frites once again the steak could have been warmer, finished with affogato.Due to the food not being as warm as it should have been I marked it down by a star. We’ve eaten at The Bell many times under the current ownership but the last few occasions have been disappointing and our visit yesterday left me compelled to write this review (not a regular contributor). The food was perfectly acceptable but the service can only be described as Faulty Towers-esque.Our waiter visited our table no less than 4 times within 10 minutes to take our food order despite us asking for some more time to look through the menu…we were also made to feel like we were inconveniencing them by asking for a high chair for our baby despite us requesting a suitable table in advance when we made our reservation. My wife who ordered a steak to be cooked “medium” was told abruptly that the chef recommended “medium-rare”. When we were paying the bill, the waiter made an inappropriate comment around the “Chinese” origins of Covid which we found bizarre and offensive. All of the above tarnished what was supposed to be a relaxing lunch in the pub with friends.I appreciate that the hospitality sector is struggling for staff at the moment but some more focus is needed on staff training given how much you are currently missing the mark.

Stayed for two nights here while working locally. The room was comfortable and warm and the shower / bathroom was perfect for my needs, with a powerful and hot shower. Yes, a bit more noise than you’d get in a purpose built hotel, but this is a working pub in a 16th/17th century building so it’s to be expected. I had two meals while I was there and the food was absolutely fantastic: chicken Milanese with green beans was simply delicious while the partridge and lentils was beautifully cooked. The bone marrow flat bread is pho one also. ‘Publican’ is a nice pint and the wine list looks decent. Breakfast was good too, on the one morning I was around to enjoy it. This is not a ‘business hotel’ (this was the reason I chose it) so the breakfast at 8am was a little late for me but would be perfect for people looking for a more relaxed stay.I chose the pub because I had eaten here a couple of times previously and have always been impressed by the quality of the cooking. To me, this is the perfect village pub and I just wish I lived closer.

We had two meals here. The first one was excellent, the second was less so - it was steak night and the steak was tough. We could hardly blame the staff, and they did replace the tough one with another not quite as tough, but it certainly wasn’t Michelin standard. They have a happy hour on Monday-Thursday but beware - you have to remind them!!! Full price was on the bill, although the manager was very willing to reduce this when it was pointed out. We shouldn’t have had to do this. And it would have been a nice gesture to take a fiver off the bill for the poor steak, or give us a complimentary dessert. The staff were really pleasant and friendly but do the owners actually exist?

We weren’t going to bother writing a review of our disappointing experience at this inn but having seen the previous review (Average lunch…..) which we can thoroughly emphasise with, we now feel it is right to advise our similar experience when we visited just over a couple of weeks ago. We found the waiting staff to be brusque and unfriendly but were prepared to ignore it and just put it down to them having a bit of an “off day”. To be fair our main courses were all superb but wish we hadn’t ordered desserts of poached peaches. They were so cold and hard that even after requesting a knife and fork to tackle them with they were really inedible and unpleasant to eat. We asked the waitress to advise the chef, to be told that he likes them to be served in this way and were made to feel extremely uncomfortable - not at all acceptable - and asked for our bill. My husband discreetly spoke to the manager who was equally dismissive and disinterested, and reluctantly knocked them off the bill. We have previously visited The Lamb at Shipston-under- Wychwood, their sister pub, and had a very enjoyable customer experience all round - complete contrast!

We are staying in the Cotswolds for a long weekend and went to The Bell for a Sunday roast. Worst decision we made. Roast chicken arrived within minutes worst roast we have had. Agree with previous bad review about food. Nice day so sat outside next to stinking drains!! Would we return or recommend NEVER!

When you read the review from Giles Coren enthusing about the food you expect great things. Ok, this was written in 2019 but still, the pub hasn’t changed hands and surely it would still live up to expectations! Sadly not. From a luke warm welcome from a young male staff member, we were taken to a small table and given the menu. We ordered a bottle of Sauvignon which was served in pitifully small glasses akin to a Sherry glass. Maybe this is their ‘thing’! We shared the Cotswold IPA Rarebit which was good to be fair, although the soldiers to dip in were in short supply and we had to order more. The Cotswold chicken breast, which Giles Coren had built up to be the best Sunday lunch he had ever eaten, was so disappointing that we felt utterly cheated. Our table for lunch was booked for late afternoon, which maybe explains the overcooked potatoes, dry and tasteless cauliflower cheese and dried out and brittle Yorkshire pudding. We were promised fluffy roast potatoes with a glistening crunch on the outside, oozy and sumptuous cauliflower cheese and a fluffy Yorkshire pudding straight from the oven, hot, moist and utterly delicious. Given that the food came out so quickly, it is not hard to work out that these elements were pre-cooked and left under a heat lamp or similar. Yes the chicken was ok and the gravy good, but we felt cheated. When asked if we were happy with the food, we said yes for some but not for all. We were told it is what it is! An interesting retort to a customer! We would have loved to have had the opportunity to explain to a senior member of staff why we were disappointed and to have given our constructive criticism, but sadly nobody was about other than young staff members who clearly were not that bothered. Why would you be when it’s not your name above the door! Such a shame and to top it all, we had to ask for a discount. Will we be back or recommend the pub? The answer is sadly not. A word to the wise- train your staff better, make every customer who walks through the door feel warmly welcomed and have a senior staff member or better still one of the owners overseeing what food is sent out. And if things are not perfect, talk to the customer who trust us, is full of excitement for being able to eat our once again and is not looking for fault or looking to complain.

Stayed in early September for just one night. Absolutely fantastic. The devilled kidneys were delicious. My wife had a pizza and really enjoyed it. Friendly staff but not intrusive and breakfast was superb. Situated in an idyllic Cotswolds village and not far from the main towns and Oxford.

Ed the general manager is always really friendly and accommodating. The food is always amazing, full of flavour and not your average pub grub. Huge selection of wines and they even have their own locally distilled house gin.

We have been to The Bell countless times and whether it was eating in or take-away, the food has always been an absolute delight throughout the years. The owners always have such a welcoming attitude and a great sense of humour, which just adds to the charm and experience. The food has always been spot on, whether it’s the mouth watering buttermilk chicken or the chocolate nemesis (and the list goes on!), the boys can do no wrong in our eyes.We have been visiting for years now and can safely say that each visit has met, if not exceeded, our expectations. It goes without saying, the beautiful pub setting and friendly staff definitely add to it too. The farm shop also was an awesome addition and served us well during the Pandemic. We are so excited to have The Lamb to add to our list next too!

How refreshing to visit a place with great service AND food, and not one or the other. 6 of us visited recently and the staff were so friendly and helpful and their knowledge of the wines and the food, down to the local produce suppliers, was outstanding. The quality of the food was also excellent and not one of us could find anything to fault. I highly recommend this place and we will definitely visit again.

Great evening at this suburb find. Had not visited before but many of our friends had and all gave glowing reviews. If you haven’t had devilled kidneys prepared this way with so much flavour and a spicy kick then you are missing out. Wife chose Cotswold Rarebit which for a traditional plate was served with an excellent contemporary twist. Both mains Hake for her and Brill for me were a triumph and deserts had to be forgone for the cheese board which we shared. So good we have booked for a family birthday in September and can’t wait to return.

Not one to normally use trip advisor but having had the most magical stay at The Bell recently, I just had to come here to leave a wonderful and well deserved review. We came for a weekend stay with the intention of eating at The Bell one day and then visiting other local places for other meals. This did not happen exactly as planned! On the Saturday evening we had an array of dishes including the famous bone marrow flatbread (mouthwateringly good!), the padron peppers and kidneys. Not a single thing to fault and I can see why all have been so popular in the press. We followed this with a steak and the sea bream and fennel. 10/10 across the board. In fact, our Saturday evening meal was so delicious, we booked ourselves in for Sunday lunch the following day. Having seen pictures of their roast beef we both went for this, and thank goodness we did. Generous portions, crispy potatoes and beef that was cooked perfectly. A beautiful spread that tasted even better. That evening, after a lovely walk, we settled back in with a good bottle (or 2) or wine and some puddings to round off the perfect weekend of pure indulgence. The definition of a true Cotswold gem and a forever favourite our ours. Thank you to everyone at The Bell, we will see you again soon!

As so highly recommended by Giles Coren in Observer , we went there for Sunday lunch 15 August, Service was excellent, but the food was not good and certainly what was charger. The prawn cocktail was psst muster but £20 serving of roast beef meat Yorkshire , roast pots, and some veg was well below an acceptable standard , for taste, texture, and appearance Eg. Meat tough and flavourless, vegetables, some over and some under cooked , crowded in untempting heaps, and soused in gravy We did not risk having a desert .

Can I suggest that both the owners and the manager don't go off on a jolly at the same time, Also probably a good idea when having your drainage system overhauled and having only one toilet available for gents and ladies to close for the day. Work guys carrying soil pipes past the guests eating outside in the sun is not great, also queuing together to use one toilet is not acceptable.Just to go back on the subject of all the management being on a jolly whenever Tom is not in the kitchen the food is than average (sorry chef). The Bell has been great in the past but like many places it is a victim of it's success and they have become complacent and it's on it's way down excluding any friends giving glowing reviews in prominent news papers (no names mentioned). Also for gods sake change the menu occasionally.

We arrived on the Friday, we paid quite a bit for the 2 nights, we had our little dog with us.We found the food on the first night very oily, I had the fish and it arrived with no vegetables just some boiled potatoes that weren't completely cooked. My partner enjoyed her fish and chips though, wouldn't say its Michelin star. By the end of the evening it was just us and one other table trying to have a nice romantic meal and all you could hear was all the staff talking about things customers shouldn't really hear. We went to bed about half 10, I understand that being above a pub it would be slightly noisy but the staff kept us up until midnight talking really loud, not really acceptable for staff to be making that much noise especially when guest are directly above them, we had travelled a long way from were really tired. The room we had was extremely small and we gathered that this was normally where staff stay sometimes, it wasn't the rooms that we saw advertised, the TV was tiny and we had no amenities like toothpaste, hair dryer, iron etc.. which you usually get when you stay somewhere. The second night we ate at the restaurant again not wanting to drive around anymore and the food was a lot better this time. All in all it was quite disappointing to pay so much and to not receive what you pay for.My partner over heard the owner speaking to someone that they close the place down at Christmas if you want to stay as they give the rooms out to locals who pay £50/£60 a room. The room we stayed in especially should be about that much money anyway, not nearly £400 for 2 nights. The owner was pleasant though and the staff were nice, I just think it needs to rethink the prices and be more mindful that people are staying there.

Having lost one of our close friends to covid recently I was dismayed when we went in for lunch today that none of the staff on the floor were wearing a face mask. I appreciate that the government have made it voluntary but surely any responsible business that care about the safety of their customers and each other would follow the advice of the scientists.

So I will start with a positive. The staff were good and the outside seating was very good. The food was terrible. We were six people. The fish courses was poor. The liver was very overcooked with potato that resembled and tasted like glue. I do not complain in restaurants because I do not want to spoil the evening or give the very pleasant staff a hard time. We had come because of "The Times" recommendation which was in fact to the other restaurant in the group. This was very disappointing.

After enjoying an early summer's evening dinner with decent ale and food, the desert menu was offered to us, whereby my son decided to try the sorbet at £3.The young lady serving our table asked how many scoops he would like, adding there was no limit, depending on the customer preference. Opting for 3, the pub charged 9 pounds, £3 per scoop, which was definitely NOT made clear at the time of ordering. On questioning this ludicrous deception for some iced, flavoured water, the young lady offered any equally banal and uniformed response - I think it's quite a fancy make. In fact Judes sorbet is £5 a tub in a supermarket. Beware this sort of customer ripping off here..

We visited becuase we read that Giles Coren had given it a perfect review in 2018. Long time ago, but we couldn't disagree. Difficult to judge when you order a burger, but it was excellent (though I do prefer slightly pink) with good chips and a pint of Pimm's. We ate outside next to the car park which is now full of tables, so you do have to park on the road. Service was lightening fast and very friendly.

The Bell in many ways is the quintessential English pub. Roses round the door, selection of cask ales, garden, interesting menu and pleasant staff. We stayed there as well so we had ‘an in depth experience’. Clearly the owners set out to create a lovely pub and seem to have achieved that. A couple of niggles to mention. The bathroom (too small for a bath) was the smallest galley wc, basin and shower I’ve ever experienced (even on a ship). Any moderately oversized couple couldn’t have coped. The room opposite by comparison was huge. We requested the ‘best’ room when booking so must assume this other room was already booked. The other niggle was that they want to ‘turn’ the table so we had either a 7pm or 9pm choice. We had the 7pm slot and our leisurely celebration dinner was all over by 7.30 (slight exaggeration). The bar was packed but we found 2 stools under a staircase for a nightcap. I’ve run chains of pubs for a number of breweries (so know the issues well) and (obviously) pubs with rooms aren’t hotels with large public spaces but perhaps they could try and work out how to allow residents the use of their restaurant table for as much of the evening as they wish.

I had left it late to book a Father's Day lunch for my husband and our 2 daughters. We'd not eaten at The Bell before but I rang on the off-chance they may have a table. I was greeted on the phone by a lovely friendly voice saying they were full but could accommodate us if we arrived at 12 and had an hour and a half time slot before the table booked guests arrived.Perfect for us!Arrived to a wonderful welcome at the front door. The fire was lit as it was chilly and rainy and we were shown to a great table! Was looking like a really positive start! What followed just couldn't be faulted. Our drinks, delicious bread and garlic oil were delivered to the table by our friendly waitress, while we perused the menu. Our meals: 2 roasts, 1 pizza and 1 bream were cooked beautifully. Not a microwave reheat or overcooked veg in sight. Our shared desserts of sticky toffee pudding and chocolate nemesis were simply sublime. The chefs should be incredibly proud of what they produced today.Front of house, waitress, food, atmosphere, styling and even the loos were fabulous! This is a masterclass on how a country pub should be run.Thankyou for making a last minute Father's Day treat just wonderful. We can't wait to return!

Such a beautiful and thoughtfully decorated inn deserves good food, and I am happy to say that the food we enjoyed on our visit was absolutely delightful. The menu was really interesting and had clearly been assembled with great care and creativity, but importantly, the food really delivered in terms of taste and execution as well. There was a great wine list, and the ambience in the inn was top class. All that said, I have to also point out that service was absolutely above expectations: caring, professional, but friendly and funny, and with clear enthusiasm for the food and for his job, our waiter was brilliant.I highly recommend The Bell Inn - we will definitely return!

They are offering services, like breakfast, they are not supposed to offer and they refuse to pay back the money. They also put the pets are free but afterwards they make you pay for them.We booked a room with breakfast, clearly reflected in the booking. Due to the coronavirus situation, we emailed them asking about how they were going to serve the breakfast, twice. We never received an answer. We supposed that because they were serving dinners in the garden, they had a way to do it safely because they were offering that service. When we arrived, they told us they were not serving breakfast because they weren’t allowed by law, we said there was no problem but we wanted the money back for that service that we paid for. They didn’t want to pay us back any money neither offer us a solution saying that the rooms were cheaper than usual, (thing you can believe or not due to you have no proof of that), we explained we were upset because they could have told us before arriving or they could have that updated on the booking website, but they didn’t care, and they said they never checked Booking emails. We even talked with the owner, and it was even worse because he continued saying that we didn’t pay for breakfast, I don’t know what he understands by this ticket “Double room-Classic-Ensuite - Advance Purchase B&B – Breakfast Include”. And the attitude instead of feeling ashamed by their mistake was even challenging against us, saying that it was not their fault. They are cheating the people on the website. Not only they are offering breakfast right now, but also with the pets “Pets are allowed on request. No extra charges”, and when you pay it arrives an automatic message that says you have to pay “there will be a £10 charge if they stay in the rooms” I guess is free to leave them on the street..We have reported this to Booking hoping they do an investigation, but it is really a shame that viewing that they have done the things in the wrong way they didn’t do anything about it.
