We stayed for dinner and a garden room. Must admit was a bit disappointed to be out in a “garden room”, which is a new extension. Attached to the hotel. Very clean and pleasant. But dated in decor, (loads of cushions everywhere and bed runners etc). Had dinner in the restaurant. My dinner was lovely, although nod to vegan it could be more inclusive. Husband really has a dislike of the one vegan option and all other options were meat/fish, not even a vegetarian option. So he ended up with a dinner of sides. As did my child as the child’s menu is all meat/fish.Some things where excellent but £5 for a couple of slices of white bread and butter as a starter/nibbles it’s bit excessive. The hummus and soup and Dahl were wonderful.Breakfast was really good and great service. Was a bit of a muddle with payment for dinner at then end (as it was pre paid) but it got resolved overall. It might take me a while to push husband back to the bell again but overall i had a lovely time.

Well what can I say, locked out of my current giro hotel because it closed during the latest lock down. I was forced to take cover in a couple of large chains, a week in one was a disaster, near the race course. The other expensive but still not great. Anyway I came back to a changed, winter menu and although limited in selection, as elsewhere due to kitchen space, the choices are all superb and with a changing daily specials. I never have a night thinking”what can I have tonight”. All rooms are nice with a great smart TVs with access to iPlayer etcetera. The decor in the room is very nice with nice cushions and through’s over the bed and nice chairs. If you need a little more room the do have a selection of deluxe available. If I had to talk down, some of the bathrooms are quite small but also functional.

I stayed here for one (Sunday) night with my wife a few weeks ago. It is a delightful hotel which conjures up images of a wonderful bygone time. We checked in with ease and booked a table in the restaurant for that evening. We took the last slot. Sadly the receptionist didn't notify the restaurant and when we went to eat they were not expecting us and appeared to be winding down and cleaning. They found us a seat by the window with the tiniest of tables. There were many seats available but it was clear that cleaning had taken place there. We asked to be moved and we were given something very slightly better. The food was nice and the staff began to engage more as time went on. The bedroom was very nice and all round it's an excellent hotel but sadly I review what I see and experience not what might have been. I'm sure on a different day this would be a five star review.

New menu is fabulous. Can highly recommend the Plaice and Pork Tenderloin.Pleased to see the Classics have remained - fish and chips is always a winnerOne small disappointment was that the cheese sampler platter has gone and the only offering now is the Stilton sampler. It was delicious but would have benefitted from a description of the 3 cheeses. Maybe on a slate with names alongside or a little flag label on each. Thanks once again x

Isn’t it great when you have been stopping in a hotel for 4-5 nights a week for a couple of months and you are never fed up with the menu. There is not one item on there that I would not eat and most of the menu was a favourite and then they through a few specials at you. Tonight, Curried Pork Flat Bread with Bombay Chips and it was great. All of the rooms are good but it is worth going delux, bigger bed and TV.The hotel is managing COVID very well and nothing is ever a problem. It’s GREAT.

This was our first visit away since March so we were looking forward to it. We booked a suite for our stay, and our companions booked the other suite (there are only two suites at the hotel). We found the hotel staff extremely polite and helpful and the service excellent. Everyone was very courteous and the food was splendid. All COVID 19 rules were strictly adhered to! No problems there. However we were very disappointed with our suite. It was situated outside the main building in number 204 which was a maisonette called Blacksmith. The front door opened onto a double staircase, the room on your immediate left was a sitting room with a kitchenette which was very strange as it had kitchen cupboards and a fridge but no sink or water, no crockery, no cutlery and seemed an utterly pointless waste of space. There was a tray with usual tea/coffee, kettle etc which we took up to the bedroom as it was pointless being downstairs as there was no water! One of the mugs on the tray had a brown crack running from the top to under the handle which we took to reception and it was replaced immediately. The sitting room itself was apparently newly refurbished but was not remotely cozy. The colour scheme didn’t work at all which was blues and greys, both cold colours. It was not welcoming and was rather dreary. There’s something else too, there was a musty aroma in the room reminiscent of mild horse manure? Then we trudged up the stairs to a basic but very clean and functional bathroom with plenty of towels. The shower was weak but adequate. Lots of equine related pictures and photos along the landing which were actually rather good. Onto the bedroom which was very small but functional with a tiny window and very dark furniture. Now we know that the hotel is 16th century and therefore has a lot of dark wood everywhere but it was so dreary, which is not what you expect after a long and tiring journey. We saw the other suite which was lovely. The dark wood was everywhere but the furnishings were much more thoughtful with warm welcoming colours. The T.V. in our bedroom wasn’t working properly until we pushed the arial in properly and then it was okay. There was no telephone in the whole maisonette so we couldn’t contact reception or our companions unless we used our mobiles or went next door to the main building (trudging up and down the stairs). We asked reception on check in if they delivered newspapers to the rooms and were told yes, so we ordered a newspaper but it was not delivered? We had to collect it from the reception which defeats the lovely idea of waking up to a coffee and newspaper in bed. H’mm. if we couldn’t have one delivered then they should have said so. The suite was one of those situations where you open the door to your hotel room and either love it or hate it on sight. Unfortunately ours was the latter. It wasn’t relaxing and enjoyable but rather stressed and something to be endured for one night only. The bed and pillows were comfortable but we didn’t sleep very well. What bliss it is to get back to one’s own lovely home.

Beautifully presented and clean (ie COVID times) 1600’s Inn. Recently renovated, the entire hotel presents very nicely. The room we had was in the ceiling area with exposed beams and stone walls. Excellent dinner in their attached pub (more upmarket food than usual English pub). Real ales on tap (6x). The staff were absolutely of a high standard.Parking is easy. If you are looking for something just out of Peterborough (as we were) this is a perfect option.

We travel a lot for business and pleasure and have eaten some meals that could only be described as 'stop-gap' - purely functional. So when we find a good venue we use it time and time again. I can't tell you what a pleasure it is after a three hour drive, to walk into a place where you just know the food is going to be exceptional; The Bell Inn and Hotel is such a place. We called for lunch without booking and were lucky to get a table for two. As you can see from the photo my wife had the Stilton cheese salad and I had the ceasar sald. Having promised myself that I'd never photograph and meal, I willingly broke that rule for the first time to show readers the quality of the food. You'll have to take our word about how great it tasted. Suffice to say that I've already booked lunch for forthcoming journey.I have no wish to be critical of some of the other reviews posted, but I think it's important to say that the' fast food experience' we're so used to in other establishments can take so much away from the enjoyment of eating. I'm assuming that the reviews at the top were recent, in which case you have to remember that staff will be operating under very different conditions and that seating people takes longer as there's more to explain. I've used this Inn on many occasions and I'd be insulted if the meal arrived in less than the 5 minutes suggested in one of the reviews; this food is cooked fresh and as you can see from the photo, is not just plonked on a plate. This is great food, lovingly prepared and presented. Relax. Enjoy it.

We booked for an early evening meal and were initially told that we couldn’t come at six as were full, so we booked in at five. We arrived on time and waited over five minutes for somebody to appear to show us to our table. The place was virtually empty. We waited probably another 10 minutes before somebody came to take our drinks order. Then we waited again for the drinks and for the opportunity to order some food. As it was quite early we plumped for a few nibbles basically. We had the stilton pâté which was okay Lincolnshire sausages which were lovely. beef with chilli dip which again was lovely, the fish which was dreadful. Very overcooked and to be fair not much fish but a lot more batter. My wife had gone for the houmous which she took one taste and sent back as it was in her words disgusting. We had also ordered a side of the chips which didn’t arrive with the main food order, came about 10 minutes later we’d probably got halfway through our food by then,l. have to say were again very poor. Some were a bit raw, some were okay they were Very inconsistent. The waitress left without asking if we wanted anything else, so I stopped a Barman as he was delivering a drink and asked if we could have some ketchup and salt.A few minutes later we still hadn’t had the ketchup, so I went to see a waitress and asked if she could give us some salt and ketchup. Julie arrived with ketchup and pepper. At that point we were just about ready to give up.When we’d finished our food, we sat there for probably 20 minutes with nobody clearing the table despite numerous staff passing by. We even stacked the plates up so that it was obvious that they needed clearing, but this didn’t make any difference. At no time did anybody ask us if we want it refiller drinks which were by this time empty. We bravely decided to go with a desert which was sticky toffee pudding. This was the only saving grace of the meal it was very tasty. So to summarise the service was pretty appalling, the food very hit and miss. You can live with a bit of flawed service if they were busy but they weren’t. The other thing was there was clearly a bit of banter in the kitchen between the chefs the windows were open and at one point during the meal we could hear some pretty colourful language emerging. On the whole very disappointing visit, we certainly won’t be rushing back.

The team at the Bell were obviously working really hard to meet new standards and demands. Because of this, initially, service was chaotic but on the subsequent evening I was so impressed by their responsiveness to my requests and the food was of a very high standard- nothing was too much trouble.I sat in a warm courtyard listening to swifts and enjoying three delicious courses. The room was attractive and modern- almost to boutique standard. I would definitely stay here again and feel sure that the teething problems around adapting to new guidelines are well on their way to being ironed out.

This is my 'local' but it's the first time we've been to eat since the easing of lockdown. We started with a 5 min wait for the 'door sentry' to arrive and allow us in. Having been led to our table there was then a 10 min wait to get a drink. After a further 5 mins we were than able to order food, which took 25 mins to arrive. The food was very good! We waited a further 10 mins for someone to take our order for desserts, which then took 20 mins to arrive. The venue was not particularly busy with about 20 diners between the bar and the bistro, but the staffing was utterly inadequate; so far as I could see there seemed to be 4 staff covering bar, bistro, hotel reception and 'door sentry'. It's worth a visit if you like good food and don't mind 2 courses taking an hour and a half. It's worth mentioning that the staff were, as ever, courteous and efficient - there just weren't enough of them!

On entering the bell the staff were welcoming as expected We ordered 1 breakfast 2 coffees! The coffees came immediately by a very friendly young waitress! So far so good? the anticipation of a english breakfast was exciting But then the waiting ? I Hoped the coffee would accompany my breakfast? it turned cold after waiting so long for the breakfast ? Waitress still busy setting tables and tidying keeping busy we did notice that we were the only customer's in for breakfast and wondered why we were kept waitlng for so long for just 1 breakfast ? But we did notice elder member's of staff sitting down in the corner of the restaurant as they had 30 minutes earlier when we ordered our coffees and 1 breakfast! Eventually the breakfast came , served by the industries waitress as the elder staff remained sitting down out of sight but not out of earshot eventually breakfast was finished We thanked the young waitress who was still busy! and we walked to the exit and still sat down in the corner were the elder members of staff as they had been when we entered the premises 45minutes earlier! You would have hoped that the bell ? Under new ownership and introducing a new well advertised breakfast service would have made a effort to maximise the staff to insure a good and effective service ?

A cheerful member of staff came and took us to the restaurant where our table was situated near to an open fire adding to the cosy atmosphere.Everything seemed too good to be true but the restaurant was faultless. We were torn between a number of dishes and everything was tasty and well presented with plenty of vegetarian options also. My fillet steak was cooked to perfection and went well with the Malbec.I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone who enjoys great food in a lovely setting with polite, friendly and attentive staff. We had a lovely meal, no one complained, was all hot and well presented. The blade of beef was tender and succulent, there was plenty of chicken and salmon in those dishes. Good variety of real ales and drinks all round. I had a lovely cooked breakfast the next day, good quality bacon and sausage, eggs however you please etc. Also plenty of other options. If you have mobility issues then the old nature of the place may cause slight problems. There are plenty of stairs to some rooms and around parts of the restaurant. For info.

My wife and I decided a spot of Saturday lunch out was in order and so headed to The Bell Inn in Stilton. The menu is very appetising and we ate in the Bistro area which was very pleasant... The Bar is also nice as is the outside patio area, if the weather is fine. There is a historic well in the courtyard that is said to date back as far as Roman times. We had the Stilton Pate and the Steak Burger (with Stilton) and both were excellent, as were the thick hand cut chips. Service was good and prices were just a bit what I would call average for pub food. All in all though we enjoyed the Bell Inn and would recommend it to anyone looking for good food in a nice old English village pub.

A party of six of us stayed for three nights at The Bell Inn from October 4th. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was good. We booked three deluxe rooms back in January of this year. When we arrived one couple were given a deluxe room in the hotel, but we, and our other friends were given 'garden rooms' which were not in the main hotel but in a separate block. The rooms were not deluxe, more like a travel lodge! The insulation between the rooms was a lot to be desired! Paying £132 per night for these rooms was not justifiable. We were very disappointed with the accommodation. Beware of the Garden Rooms! It does not state on their website that these rooms are not attached to the hotel but are advertised for people with less mobility. having booked so far in advance we thought we would at least be offered a room of character in the hotel, not shunted out to an annexe.

We were rescued from the prospect of no evening meal by the kindness of 'The Bell'. We had booked at the nearby 'The Fox' but when we turned up, it was shut up, there was nobody answering the phone and no notice on the door. As this was the weekend where the whole area around Stamford is overwhelmed by The Burghley Horse Trials we had little hope of an alternative but drove to 'The Bell' just in case. Nathan at the bar was brilliant. He found us a table in the bar, and despite the Bistro and Restaurant being fully booked, made sure we had excellent service and were well cared for. The meal was the best we'd had in months. They really know how to cook meat here! And the puddings, all home made, were amazing. We could not fault this place and want to say a HUGE THANK YOU, for your kindness to a family of refugees who would otherwise have gone hungry. Next year we'll book with 'The Bell'.

Others had a good bangers and mash which came with onion rings. The onion rings were outstanding. Crispy yet the onion itself soft and well done. My wife had the Stilton Sampler plate. It looked very appetizing and my wife loved it. She a real cheese lover while I am just an uncouth cheese eater, so I believe her when she says the cheese was very good. The bar staff are always well turned out (dressed in formal black and white and everyone looks clean and polished). I have recently started meeting a friend who is gluten free and lactose intolerant so often has to search for a restaurant where they offer more than salad. There is a special menu (looks like the normal one but is fully gluten free) from which he can choose interesting and tasty dishes - for him a real rarity - and at £15 for a main course it is not expensive. My 100% steak burger was absolutely delicious and his pasta and sauce looked yummy. I always find the service is with a smile and they give the impression they are happy to be there. Thanks.

The Bell Inn is a magnificent and imposing building on the main street in the village of Stilton. From the outside it oozes class and distinction and inside it’s warm friendly atmosphere and attentive staff make you feel at home straight away. We arrived at about 14.20 and were informed that the kitchen closed in approx 10 minutes. We didn’t need much time to decide that a stilton sandwhich and a latte was the fitting choice for us. The latte arrived quickly and efficiently and what a thing of beauty it was. A small shot glass of malteser chocolates accompanied the coffee which we thought was a very nice touch. The doorstop stilton sandwhich, with salad and crisps soon followed and what perfection it was. We were not dressed for the occasion but that didn’t matter. We were made to feel welcome and valued and the experience was a memorable one. All in all I would encourage anyone to go and try the cuisine and if we are ever in the vicinity again we wouldn’t hesitate to re-visit either.

We had an hours drive to meet up for a family get together at this place and we will be there again for the next gathering!

Traveling up the A1 came off to find some lunch - what a find! Roast sirloin was perfect and the veggies just right, had decided not to have a starter, but go for desert, after all it is the first place Stilton cheese was served!! Unfortunately the potions were so large and the food so lovely- couldn’t even think of desert!

We had Sunday lunch at The Bell Inn and were delighted with both the service and the food. The staff were very friendly and attentive and our starters and main courses were excellent. The portions are generous so we were unfortunately not able to have dessert. We will definitely be returning to The Bell Inn in the near future!

Dined with friends at the Bell yesterday evening, a party of four. Overall, although the table service from the young waiting team was exemplary the food brought to the table was, we all thought, disappointingly average - previous visits have left me impressed with the quality and presentation of the dishes served, but this time one felt it had all been a bit of a rush job.

We have been to the Bell countless times as Stilton locals, and we can't recommend it enough. The food is always delicious, plentiful and in season, with the special's board usually being a particular highlight. There is a good range of beer and gins on offer, and the staff are always friendly and helpful. There a few different areas to dine in, but we prefer the village pub area, especially in Winter when there is a warming fire making the whole place even more cosy. Can't recommend the Bell enough to anyone in the area.

Whilst driving to Rutland for a weeks stay in a wooden lodge on the edge of Rutland Water decided to stop for a break and refreshment, there are a number of pubs and the Bell Inn Hotel which was old fashioned and quaint. Unsure if we would be able to get a table without booking we entered the bar area and approached one of the waitresses who was very helpful and found us a table for two. We checked out the menu and was intrigued by one item which was a Colston Bassett Stilton Pate, Beetroot Marmalade starter. I decided when in Stilton you had to try something from the area although Stilton Cheese has not been made locally for a number of years. I can only say that i do not normally go for a pate but it was delicious. If you are a follower of my reviews you know what comes next yes Roast Beef with all the trimmings and lashings of Gravy and of course the obligatory Cappacino. I would definitely recommend this restaurant but would also suggest you pre-book. Thank you to all the staff who made us feel welcome and for the history lesson.

Well worth a short diversion from the A1(M), just south of Peterborough. Friendly welcoming staff, and a good and varied menu. Having eten in the bistro and stopped off for drinks here before, we decided to eat in the restaurant this time for our wedding anniversary. I mentioned this on booking and we got a table near the open fire, so perfect! candle lit and cosy. The food was excellent, we opted for two courses rather than three, as we are not big eaters. I had venison, my husband had lamb. both were delicious and perfectly presented with some lovely accompaniments. A good selection of well priced wine. Deserts also excellent and the Stilton cheese tasting board a must! The staff are extremely professional, friendly and helpful. We had coffees and brandies in the little Dick Turpin's room next door with a sofa and a real fire and the waitress was happy to wrap the cheese we had not managed to eat for us to take home. Good choice of ales and a gin menu in the bar. the perfect evening, I thoroughly recommend this lovely place.

Used The Bell in at Stilton to meet up with our cousins from Milton Keyes (we're near Tuxford so it's a similar distance for both couples). I'd told Reception that we'd be arriving around 11.30 and was told the Bistro restaurant didn't open until 12 but we'd be welcome to wait in hotel reception. My husband and I arrived first and were warmly welcomed and invited to help ourselves to coffee. Our cousins arrived and had a similar warm welcome. We were then directed across the courtyard to the restaurant and received another warm welcome. The service and attention to detail was superb. We all chose to have the venison Pudding which was served on braised red cabbage and Savoy cabbage with a dish of vegetables each. When asked if we needed to order a side of potatoes, were told that it was quite a substantial dish and so no but could ask for some once we'd seen the meal if we needed -we didn't! This plate of food was the best I've eaten in a restaurant for some years. The puddings were also very good and seasonal featuring plum compote with a light, baked cheesecake and pear and almond tart. It was excellent value for money costing £25 each for main, pudding, soft drinks and coffee. I'm sorry this place is so far away otherwise we'd be regular customers.

Wow, we were given a nights stay at The Bell Inn in Stilton as a present for my husbands birthday. We had a wonderful time. Room 22 with a four poster bed was really cosy, the bed was a little hard and could do with a topper but the room and ensuite made our stay totally enjoyable. Stayed here one Thursday BB and had a very nice evening meal. The building is very impressive and has been very well converted into a modern inn. Our room (31) was a little small especially the bathroom, but we did book last minuite and I assume this was a standard room. The bed was a little uncomfortable but overall the room was adequate clean and tidy. We had a meal in the bistro, which was nice and we then moved into the bar area for our desserts. Breakfast in the restaurant was very good and we wished we had eaten there as the setting was excellent. Overall an enjoyable stay and we will return, but ask for a better room and a table in the restaurant.

As a birthday treat we went to The Bell at Stilton in our lunch break from work. When we arrived we went to the bar and was met by a grumpy bar person who took ages to get 4 soft drinks, we were then told to choose a table, which we did, we made our choices and went and ordered at the bar. Nearly 40 minuets later still no food, I asked the grumpy bar person who was now serving food and she went to check and came straight back with it. A sandwich, a ploughmans, a lamb kofta with pitta, a salmon with rye bread and a portion of chip. Thank goodness we ordered the chips, I've never seen such a small pitta bread or kofta's more like the size of a biscuit and cocktail sausage, the salmon was 4 of the tiniest slices of salmon ever, my little finger was bigger, with 2 wafer thin pieces of rye bread and a bit of mayo, what a rip off, we wouldn't have minded if each tiny mouthful was delicious but it wasn't. Whilst we were there another table was demanding their meal and drinks for free. Grumpy waitress, poor food and took and hour and a half to get a simple lunchtime meal. Certainly no birthday treat.

We stayed here for one night recently. The staff were all very friendly, professional and helpful and the food both dinner and breakfast of a high standard and very tasty. Our twin room however was a disappointment, it was very cramped with little space for manoeuvre and the show ever was only suitable for people under 5'6"! Whilst I would heartily recommend the bar I would also advise caution when looking for a B&B as our room was certainly overpriced.

In this historic inn/hotel where we have eaten before we have always had a good welcome and enjoyed a range of good food with portion sizes particularly favourable. The ambience, too, is very good especially as we ate in a smaller room from the main restaurant area. very helpful and diligent staff helped to make our meal enjoyable. A very minor quibble is that you have to go up the stairs to this olde worlde inn in order to eat which might cause difficulty to those not used to stairs.Having said that the bar downstairs also serves excellent food in a typical pub atmosphere,

This was our first time in Stilton as we were meeting friends in Peterborough. We decided to book the Bell Inn Hotel and we made an excellent choice. The outside of the hotel gave the impression that we were about to walk back in time. It had a wonderful olde English feel to it, even though there has been a new part built onto it.The lady at the reception was very nice and helpful and she kindly arranged a cab to collect us at 6pm to take us to Werrington. We stayed in room 27 which overlooks the back of the hotel, it was very comfortable, wth two single beds and tea and coffee making facilities. We stayed for breakfast in the morning which we really enjoyed. The staff were wonderful and we will definitely be coming back in a couple of months when we visit our friends again. We would thoroughly recommend a stay here and wish we had stayed a bit longer during the day. We are hoping to stay for Sunday lunch next time.
