Bury St Edmunds has a plethora of cafe choices and so in order to stand out a place has to be exceptional and Bay Tree Cafe is such a place. It is not just the excellent freshly prepared menu, whether eating breakfast, brunch, lunch, from the snack to the substantial and it is not just the terrific, friendly and welcoming staff, from Alex himself to Lisa, Kira, Kelsey and co. It is the combination of excellent food and lovely staff that together create a vibe and ambiance that is very hard to beat. A place you always come out happier than when you went in. A real home from home....

We had a fabulous lunch here for my friend's birthday. The service was great. We were not hurried to leave when we had finished which was so nice. The meals came on hot plates and were delicious. We had the middle eastern chicken dish. The pecan pie was moreish. We were able to pay with cash which is unfortunately becoming unusual. The only downside was the chairs were uncomfortable and would benefit from chair cushions. This was probably noticeable because we were able to stay so long.

What a lovely place! I met two friends here to have brunch, chat about our writerly careers and view the Local Authors' Shelf upstairs containing the books of the Bury Writers and Beyond group. The welcome was extremely warm, the coffee delicious, the toast crisp and hot and the surroundings delightful. I didn't feel hurried for a second and I will be returning often. I'm just sorry it's on the other side of the county. But well, well worth the trip

We stopped at The Bay Tree Café for lunch and was greeted by a lady called Lisa. A warm smile and a nice greeting go a very long way. We were given a nice amount of time to peruse the menu and then our order was taken and in a few moments our coffees appeared nicely decorated. Lisa soon appeared with our meals. Again with a warm smile and hearty conversation. The food was sensational, beautifully presented and the flavours of the food were phenomenal. We felt relaxed and well taken care of by Lisa and learned it was her Canadian husband who added a Canadian flair to the menu. I can not recommend The Bay Tree Café more highly. What a lovely find that as today and we will be going back there very soon to sample more of the lovely menu.

We loved this independent cafe. Friendly service and delicious freshly cooked food. Our breakfast was one of the best cooked breakfasts we’ve had. Great quality food and our toast was from a hand cut loaf, delicious. So much thought has gone into making sure customers have an enjoyable time there from providing newspapers and even thinking about the draught that might come from the door, there is a large screen there that prevents that. Lots of seating upstairs too where there are books that you can take for a donation to charity. The toilets are the best I’ve seen in a cafe too, again so much thought about customers needs. Beautifully decorated with extras that ladies might need even a special seat that has a flip down child seat, brilliant didn’t know they existed.Highly recommended.

We should have known not to stop at this cafe when I tried to order avocado and poached egg on toast, only to be told they ‘don’t do’ poached eggs! So I settled for a fried egg. Bad move! The egg was so old that the white had spread as big and thin as a side plate! Under the greasy egg was sliced tinned mushrooms, smashed avocado and supposedly granary toast! The only decent thing on the plate was streaky bacon. I asked for a fresh egg and they bought my breakfast back with an exact replica of the first egg on it! The yolk was hard and the white was spread out as big as the slice of bread! I called the lady over and she was very rude! My friends English breakfast was just as bad but she decided to eat hers.

We visited the Bay Tree last Saturday for a bit of a late lunch, had two hungry children with us as well which is always unnerving but we were pleased to find a friendly welcome and they directed us to some books and colouring bits for the children which really did the trick in keeping them amused! We thought it was a really nice and varied menu, we chose toasties for the children, my husband had the steak panini and I chose a pizzini as I was intrigued.I was tempted by the Bistro style menu items but didn't want to ruin my appetite for an evening meal later on. Our order was taken promptly and drinks were delivered within a few minutes.... again, we didn't wait too long at all for our food to come which was nice considering it was a Saturday and they were still busy. All the food was really nicely presented and generous portions, my husband helped our smallest child to finish up her toasty! It was all really yummy and the whole experience was relaxing which isn't often the case with small children in tow, I have been to the Bay Tree before but only for a coffee, we would all definitely come here again for lunch or brunch, it just has such a lovely warm feel to it, and it's in such a nice spot down St John's Street, away from the throngs of people down Abbeygate Street. MORE AT TripAdvisor

It was my first visit to the Bay Tree yesterday Friday 10 March at 2.30 pm and only a couple of tables were occupied. I was alone for nearly 10 minutes and although a waitress was around I was not offered any service then nor after the arrival of my friend. I assumed it must be a self-service cafe. So I went up to the counter and managed to get the attention of a waitress (who was NOT YOUNG) and requested our two drinks, helping her to read the label on the elderflower water bottle and, as I was at the counter, asking if I should pay whilst ordering? She said I could if I wanted and quoted me £5.10 (or it may have been £5.20) so I handed over a £10 note and was handed the change but given no receipt. The drinks arrived unaccompanied by any bill slip. On going to leave the cafe an hour later we got to the door and unexpectedly found ourselves being shouted at from behind and, in front of the other customers, being accused of not having paid our bill! Our accusers included the same waitress who had taken my money! The strength of my response resulted in a sheepish apology. I was and remain utterly outraged and upset by this treatment. I am a professional, mature Bury woman meeting another professional mature Bury woman for a drink in a cafe and I was subjected to an embarrassing, unpleasant and humiliating experience because an incompetent waitress did not have her mind on the job and there is no system for receipting payments. I will never be going to the Bay Tree again and if you do I strongly recommend you be sure to ASK FOR A RECEIPT WHEN YOU PAY THE BILL.

We went to the Bay Tree on a busy Saturday afternoon on February 18 to grab a late lunch. We very nearly couldn't get in and were told as much by a server who made no effort to see if there might be any tables about to be free. This was the first warning. In any case, someone about to leave gave us their table. We didn't expect to get served quickly. it was, after all, a Saturday and the cafe was full. However, we might have expected to get our order taken a little quicker and the simple things – like two glasses of tap water – done while the food order was put in. No such luck. The order was taken with bad grace by a young woman who clearly begrudged giving up her Saturday for such demeaning work. We then got little more from another young worker who said she would chase up our glasses of water – TWICE.Anyway, we had our coffees – which were good – and had low expectations from the food, but were very pleasantly surprised. The brie, bacon and fig jam panino was excellent, as was the BLT. Both were accompanied with nicely presented and sparingly dressed salads that were not simply garnish, but greatly enhanced the dishes. However, I had to ask FOUR TIMES for the glasses of water and got them just before we paid the bill. To punters, I would recommend the food in this establishment. It was far higher quality than a standard cafe, but be wary of attending on a Saturday afternoon. To the owner – sort your staff out, or you will start to lose business and quickly. I understand the pressures of working in such an environment – we both did if for years when we were younger – but you get nowhere by annoying the punters. We always tip a minimum of 10%, usually 15% to 20%, but your staff got nothing that day for which I am sorry, but I couldn't be sure the kitchen staff – or the two helpful servers we had – would get a share. And be assured, had we more time, I would have made my disappointment clear to the manager. So, your staff missed out on a tip and your establishment missed an easy 4/5. Just goes to show how corrosive the bad attitude of a couple of teenage workers can damage a reputation.

Good food, friendly staff. Our third visit as we have always been made to feel welcome and treated as individuals not a commodity.

Went to the Bay Tree again and this time disappointed. Our order for tea for two, a steak and onion panini, and a Brie and grape sandwich was taken and our tea arrived promptly. However we had to wait for 40 minutes for our food, we did have to chase them up which did have an effect. The sandwich was ok but the panini was disappointing as the bread was not toasted long enough and the filling was sparse. I then ordered a piece of carrot cake which was in a display cabinet I was sitting next too this did not arrive promptly either and when I queried I was told my ticket had gone into the queue along with all the other cooked orders. I said then that I wished to cancel the order as I was not prepared to wait any longer. This was answered with " I can see the plate is ready"! The cake then was served and was delicious. We have eaten many times at this cafe but was really disappointed this time, the problem seemed to be in the kitchen where orders were taking forever to appear!

It was obvious the venue was not ready to supply a Christmas meal for a large party. Most drinks not available at the football ground. No cider on tap etc. The conservatory where we ate was absolutely freezing despite the owner saying the heating was on? Tiny little electric radiator does not do the job in such a big open space. Waiter brought sugar cubes out in the manufacturers box and served it for you in your coffee. It looked so unprofessional. The service was ok, food was to a good standard however it was just too obvious they were not ready yet to cater in this new venue. No card machine working to pay with at end so had to embarrassingly hunt around for cash. Prefer meal in the cafe like we used to. This is my 4th Christmas meal here in a large party and I don't think I'll be going next year if it's at the same venue.

This was my wifes 4th and my 1st visit, and I must say what a great little place, seating is on 2 levels, the food is great and the staff are really friendly. We did have to wait a bit as they had some staff off on sick and were very busy but the staff were very apologetic and even when they forgot my wifes sweet potato chips and apologised you did get the feeling that unlike other cafes/restaurants they actually cared and did mean it when they apologised. Will certainly be making this a regular place every time we visit Bury.

Lovely warm welcome on a very wet, windy and miserable Sunday afternoon. On way to a hotel so just wanted a small snack and as per normal, we were not disappointed. Lovely selection of cakes, pastries etc, these are the best teacakes I have had and served toasted with lots of butter, perfect. We couldn't have been looked after better and the young lady who served us couldn't have been faulted on her friendliness or service. This is a little gem tucked away that never disappoints. Fresh, tasty food and a lovely ambiance, perfect.

Having visited the Bay Tree several times in the past, I was looking forward to introducing my friend to the place and told her all about the great service and tasty food.On arrival I ordered a goats cheese and roasted vegetable panini, which quickly appeared before me. However, after the first two bites noticed something was missing - something that some people may consider essential to the goats cheese and roasted vegetable panini experience. I could not taste the goats cheese! On opening up the panini it became clear that in their haste to bring the tasty food to my table, someone had left the poor goats cheese behind - or so I thought.I told the waiter there was no goats cheese in my roasted vegetable and goats cheese panini and he went to the kitchen to inform the chef. On his return he told us that the chef said there was goats cheese in the panini, and it had just melted into the bread and disappeared. It was a disappearing goats cheese! I was amazed! I've prepared and eaten quite a bit of goats cheese in my time, but never have I cooked it so well that it melted away, leaving not a hint of flavour, not a smidgen of colour, not a trace of its very being - in fact leaving nothing but a few roasted vegetables and a dry, lonely panini behind! In my ignorance I felt I had to challenge the waiter, who insisted that the goats cheese was definitely there, just not visible to the naked eye. He must have known an unbeliever when he saw one though, as the incredulous look on my face quickly hastened him to knock the cost of the magical mystery goats cheese and roasted vegetable panini off the bill. This is the first time I have had anything other than a good meal at the Bay Tree. Maybe we entered the Twilight Zone that day...

This bistro has a sizeable upstairs dining area, so don't panic if the ground floor tables are all filled. This is a good spot for lunch while shopping/browsing in Bury. Food and service were very good. The menu is pretty large for a bistro this size. Prices were very reasonable.

Great meat from helpful butchers, fresh fruit and veg along with lots of items you may not expect. Friendly staff both in shop and cafe makes for a great experience. Just visited today for meat and veg. Just as good as always, first class produce at a reasonable cost. 4th Sept ... just been and got a shoulder of minted lamb that was prepared in front of me. All the staff are pleasant and friendly and genuinely seen to be happy with their jobs giving a great atmosphere.
