A small family style Italian restaurant - building has been here for many years - originally part of the old tram network, been a restaurant since 1994. Service was good, attentive without being intrusive. I had earth pizza which I thoroughly enjoyed. Mother-in law loves a lasagne - and is quite fussy - let's just say she cleared the plate - everyone was happy with food and enjoyed the evening. Would I go again - most definitely - I'd go later without the in-laws - have a bottle of wine & soak up the atmosphere, without having to give up the table, by 8 pm. All in all, a great evening - everyone left happy & in good spirits.

Not the battlefield rest I know and love. I booked a table for 3 and we were squeezed into a table for 2 in the busiest part of the restaurant which made our meal very uncomfortable. My husbands starter portion of pasta was cold and contained no Italian sausage as stated on the menu, my main course of seafood risotto was also cold and warm in some parts meaning it had been heated up in the microwave, my dad's seabass was supposed to have been pan fried and this wasn't the case as he couldn't flake the fish from the skin. This has become an expensive restaurant and cost me a lot of money , I don't know what's changed but the standard of the food has dropped drastically, no food should ever be put down on a table unless it's cooked to perfection and piping hot and sadly that was not the case with us.

Still terrific under new owners, look forward to returning 😀 minestrone superb 😀

Best Italian food in Glasgow.Food exquisite and wine list superb extenceve and reasonably priced.Location and decoration of the old team halt a joy to behold.Staff so knowledgeable and helpful and always so pleasant. WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK.😋😋😋

Have only being here twice 1st time not so good 2nd time a lot better food wise atmosphere is moon like don’t expect the red carpet I felt on both occasions when paying the bill there was no communication like how was your food and on leaving the same no thanks good buy call back lacks that intimacy and the fact that ypuve came to the restaurant felt non existent cmon staff liven up abit maybe some soft music playing in the background people seem a tad dull. Non appreciative

Must have been an off day, last time we went (about a year ago) was much better. Food was mediocre. Antipasti was clearly a supermarket 'mixed cold meats' packet & a handful of cheap olives out of a jar. And a single piece of square sandwich bread, surely a joke! Pizza was dripping, sloppy. Pasta overcooked, sauces watery wet & my plate was swimming with oil. Two teaspoons of parmesan then whipped away, laughably stingy. Everything bland. Waiting staff were polite but absent & didn't check on us once. Very disappointing. Edit: I just looked at photos from some other reviews, saw the same things we ordered looking totally different and much better, it really must have just been the main chefs day off or something...

The Battlefield Rest is one of those culinary institutions in the Southside that you just have to cherish and hope that they will never disappear. Usually, I start a restaurant review with a few words about the food. But here, I will make an exception, as the building (an Edwardian former tram resting place) and it's uber-cozy interior are one of the main reasons I love coming back again and again. The restaurant is usually well-frequented (typically by locals and regulars) but never gets too noisy. It's this unpretentious, friendly and warm feeling this room radiates that make it so special. Now to the food: Again, if you are looking for honest, unpretentious Italian food (with a Scottish twist here and there), then you will be fully satisfied. I have never ordered the same thing twice. Not because I ever was unhappy with my food (quite the contrary!) but because the menu has so many mouth-watering options to offer. No matter what I ordered, I have always been very happy. The portion sizes are generous and the staff is super friendly.

Great service as always, from a fantastic team of people. Delicious food - it tells you something that they were packed during the holidays whilst all the other nearby restaurants were almost empty.

Top class all round. Went there on the afternoon of Christmas eve... Service was excellent and you never felt you were being rushed out the door even though it was very busy. Food also excellent. Will definitely be back.

Visited battlefield rest for a lunch recently. The food was nice but a tad over priced in my opinion. Ordered the antipasti board which was 1 mozzarella pearl, 5 olives, 1 small balsamic onion, 3 small slices of meat and half a bit of bread….£8.50?! Very overpriced. The interior is traditional and welcoming however the place is in need of a freshen up.

Went into this bistro for lunch was very nice food n good pudding wasn't that busy customer service was good.

On the 14/12/23 I was going to have a meal here until on approach i observed and smelled a chef outside smoking a,what they call a joint. He was in 50's and scruffy with a chefs coat under his jacket.will go elsewhere thanks.

My favourite restaurant. I made a special trip from Ireland just to eat there and I was not disappointed

The Battlefield Rest has the potential to be a very special restaurant indeed, but the dishes we had on this particular occasion were just lacking the wow factor, portion sizes weren't consistent and the starters were very skimpy. Staff were for the most part very professional. I had the crab linguine, which wasn't bad, but the king prawns were tiny and identical to ones you can pick up in a supermarket fridge and the plate was rather small. It was also slightly lacking flavour. Other members of our group had main courses that were much greater in quantity. I would love to be able to give the Battlefield Rest an extra star, but going by its reputation I expected more.

The meal was delicious and the ambience was very pleasant. Very relaxed and the staff were helpful and didn't push us for the table like some other restaurants.

Went in here on a Monday with my friend, and wow! I don’t know how I haven’t been in here yet! The place has such a lovely atmosphere, we were greeted by a very lovely man who showed us over to our table and got us drinks! The food spoke for itself, fantastic! I got the slow cooked beef cheek ragu and my friend opted for one of the Calzones. Both were fantastic! Desserts were wonderful, chocolate cake was fantastic! Although the Turkish delight ice cream wasn’t my favourite! But I only opted to try it because it was an option so not a complaint at all! The flavours they had available were amazing. I will certainly be returning here with the rest of the gang! Thanks for a lovely meal.

We popped into the "Rest" last week and were exceptionally surprised by the quality of the food. The restaurant seems to be situated on an "island" at the junction of a busy interchange (but is easy and safe to get to) . There is lots of seating outside for smokers and the décor inside is traditional for an Italian restaurant. Service was prompt and friendly . We chose from the special lunch menu and we had Bruschetta and Minestrone as our started both very tasty, for mains we had the lasagne and puttanesca both were amazing (best lasagne I have had) . Soft drinks seemed a little pricey BUT overall for the high quality of the food this is amazing value - we plan to come back again when we have more time and are back in this part of the city .

Southside Gem , parking tricky but not imposssible near by, atmospheric and wonderful customer service , and the food and wines take you to 🇮🇹.

If you looking for a genuinely traditional, authentic Italian experience here in Glasgow. Then this is the place🥰🥰🥰 super cosy and full of family vibes. Especially during this time of the year.

Great menu, difficult to chose with so many Great dishes on offer. Lunch menu , 2 courses for £15.90 is Great value for money. The food was plentiful, Great portion sizes and very tasty. Service was fantastic very attentative and friendly but not oppressive. The waiter Ian got it just right. (Thanks for the photo) Lovely style to the place and Great atmosphere. We will definitely return.

Fantastic experience, fantastic food, fantastic historical Glasgow South venue. Friendly, efficient and fun staff! Had a great evening with my daughter and grandson, and would rate it 100% worth a visit.

First visit. It is quite compact but the decor and curtains had a cosy feel about it. Given the choice of tables and we sat at a table next the the bar. Unfortunately this was just beside the cappuccino machine and coffee grinder on the bar which at ear level was very noisy and obtrusive. However it was our chaice so put up with it. The food was very good and hot!! Staff were efficient, if a wee bit too quick . Overall enjoyed the visit and the tiramisu was the best I've had in a while. Would recommend, tho maybe not the table by the coffee machine!!

We had a table for 5 booked locally at another restaurant but when we arrived and were lamely told the head chef had SKIPped and they weren't serving anything that night we wandered along to the long established Battlefield Rest where the new managers couldn't do enough to accommodate us and make sure we were comfortable throughout what was a fabulous meal everyone of us enjoyed!! Thank you guys!! A great night and we will be back for sure:)

Excellent 2 course lunch for two of us - mussels and very generous platter of antipasto followed by delicious pasta. Staff very friendly and helpful. Been meaning to come here for ages and very glad we did; definitely worth a visit. Looking forward to our next one.

A place to meet friends with wonderful food

My wife and I popped in for lunch and we were lucky to get a table as it was very popular. My wife ordered the Beef cheek with Rigatoni pasta and I had the Mushroom and Leek Risotto rice, both were very well presented, warm and tasty! Service was a bit slow but that was down to the amount of bodies in the place and just a few staff. Well worth a visit and we will book next time!

Place was rammed as usual but food was excellent. Staff are very cheery.

The Rest was packed at lunchtime today. And no wonder. Two 2-course lunches, three glasses of wine and two coffees - and all for £51! The food was excellent - imaginative - not just the usual tired Italian standards. Can't wait to get back. Great staff as well.

Been going to the Rest for years . 1 week before my daughters wedding we entertained 12 guest plus my wife and I. As usual outstanding ,great food , wine and service . If you want a treat eat here tremendous value for money. Book in advance to avoid disappointment, busy place and justifiably so.

We all really enjoyed our visit to the Battlefield Rest, food, service and atmosphere were top notch, and the set menus had a good range of choices at a very reasonable price. They were also very accommodating to adjusting a dish to suit one of our party's dietary requests. This was the first time we'd been back in a few years and certainly weren't disappointed, and look forward to our next visit, which hopefully we won't wait so long to arrange. Would highly recommend.

Tasty Italian food with friendly Italian staff, and I even had the chance to brag with the few sentences that I know in Italian. Usually, it is a very busy place, but yesterday we were very lucky to get a table on the spot when we arrived there after a walk.

Booked dinner for a large group of 10. Really friendly staff and the service was excellent all night. The food was excellent and no-one had any complaints. Despite some of the group being slightly late we did not feel rushed at all and a really nice relaxing evening was had by all.

This has to be amongst the best Italian restaurants in the UK. It is not solely reliant on pasta and pizza. It has a great selection of meat and fish based dishes with a great Italian twist. The Battlefield Rest was our restaurant of choice when it opened in the early 90's since then we have lived all over the world and have retired now to Cornwall. However any visit to Glasgow is not complete without a visit to the Battlefield Rest. Last night's visit confirmed the the food is still magical, the service excellent and the ambiance superb.

I was one of the first customers and almost 30 years ago, the food, service and atmosphere remains impeccable. Love this place !

Step back to the eighties. Good and bad. The classics are here. Minestrone yes. Lasagne yes. Spaghetti and meatballs yes. Parmigiana in a big bowl offered for every course yes. Ditto black pepper in an over large mill yes. Decor a bit too cliched. Place could do with a deep clean and a change of curtains and table cloths. Despite the dining area being over saturated with tables the diners kept appearing and squeezing themselves in. Busy place with diners across the age range. Food was decent if not special. Formulaic and predictable but still delicious enough. Inexpensive prices explain it all. Full plates and for me, a big eater, the two courses were a little too much for lunch. I skipped dessert and had a coffee to finish. Bill for two including drinks was refreshingly low. Not sure I’d go again.

Food as always lovely. Acknowledge that we had not booked but squeezed into a table which blocked the flow of diners/waiters and therefore constantly bumped throughout the meal. Had intended to stay for dessert but left after main course. Took 3 requests to receive the bill!! Overall not a very enjoyable experience. Customer feedback would be to have one table less and make the dining experience better for everyone.

The food is delicious especially the gnocchi dishes. We had a table of 14 and everyone loved their food, lovely food options for the kids as well.

First visit, for a late lunch. Food was very tasty, good size portions, friendly cheery staff, cosy family atmosphere. Good value too.

Been a while since I last visited, and it's just as good. Friendly efficient service, lovely atmosphere of satisfied diners chatter, and a great meal. We were a bit late, just had a main, mine was an open ravioli of smoked haddock, leek and spinach. It was a fusion of Scottish classic Cullen skink with pasta rather than potatoes, with a crunchy parmesan crust - I loved it ! If you are vegan they can make vegan variations of several dishes, but not advertised on the menu - just ask.

First visited in 1994 (when I was a callow youth), we've been here (as a couple, and now as a family) many times over the years - but this was our 2023 debut. Absolutely tremendous - hat tips to our excellent waiters Ian & Alec. Two courses for all 5 of us - and 2 for ice cream desserts, a bottle of red, a couple of beers and 6 soft drinks £154. Top quality starters and mains - the mussels were sensational. Mains included Calzone (delicious and very filling), spaghetti paesana (consistently excellent) and nduja & Parma ham pizza (spot-on). The service was attentive, polite, friendly and not pushy in any way at all. A delight. The restaurant was absolutely packed (on a wet Tuesday evening), so prior booking is essential. Did see a table of 4 squeezed in tightly near us.. but they were happy to be there. Just a lovely, enjoyable dining experience. Bottle of house red (organic) was £20/21, so value there too. 9.5/10!

Lovely little Italian where pastas and pizzas are not the main fayre. Feels like a throwback with the plastic table covers but it's add to the charm. You will walk out feeling very full and it's not too pricey either. Dishes themselves can be heavy but that's not bad. Decent portions as well Good kids menu too

Starters was really tasty but my main not so much I ordered pork milanese that supposed to come with a sauce.. my pork came all dry I also ordered sweet potato fries instead of the pasta. My boyfriend also ordered Mac and cheese with lobster and crab and it was tiny 5 pieces. We paid 20£ pp which it’s quite expensive for the quality that you getting.

The starter were amazing! Unfortunately my main course was terrible. I have the Venicen meat balls, the sauce was ridiculously sweet and ruined the full meal! There was no check back done also. Probably won't be back after this

Went in the for lunch food and setvice were excellent. We enjoyed the three course menu. All dishes were made with fresh ingredients and tasted amazing. We'll worth a visit.

Used to live locally and have always loved it. When full, it can be quite noisy and feel cramped.
