The Basement in Derbyshire Dales

Find the restaurant in the Square in the corner down in a basement. Decor a little tired but the food was superb. We had sizzling beef, sauce was delicious. Sweet and sour chicken and beef salad. Didn't leave a scrap.

Visited while on holiday and had a really nice meal from the early bird menu. Very tasty food, up there with the better Thai meals we've had on our travels. Good value too. Would definitely go back.

We had a takeaway and were very disappointed. Order was incorrect with missing item, although not charged. The lemon chicken, which was basically 4 chicken nuggets served with chips?? And a cold pot of dip, (£14.95). The rice was half a takeaway container full, still in the boil in the bag. Grilled prawns were 4 prawns on a base of wilted lettuce for £14. Overall, poor value for money and quality.

Outstanding food but lacking the Thai hospitality I am used to. The English server was very polite though.

Hi, we went there for dinner with friends. What a great place, a nice ambiance the staff were very friendly the food was good. The place was clean. Worth a visit.

Me and my partner love Thai food but this was unacceptable! First the waitress was really rude and looked like she didn’t want to serve us as they were about to close in 30 minutes which is enough time to eat and make food. Secondly, when asking for a recommendation the lady took one look at me and gave me the most mild food ever and then continued to ask me about how spicy I like my food and then finially she was like okay you will like the green curry after I had ordered the yellow curry. She then kept saying oh it has onions and portatoes in and I had to say I love these or I wouldn’t have ordered it to get her to stop being rude. My partner had satay and pad Thai which stained his hands yellow for a few days!!! I don’t know what they put in it! The pad Thai’s chicken was obviously cooked separately as it was bland. My yellow curry was okay except it was so sweet I couldn’t finish it and then the waitress looked annoyed at the fact that I didn’t like the food despite explaining to her several times that it was too sweet and sickly, my food was definatly cooked separately too as the portatoes had no flavour. I paid roughly £13.95 for this and it was not worth a penny!!! When the bill arrived she didn’t even give us a discount or anything off the bill despite several complaints. The waitress overall was rude and looked like she didn’t want to be there and it definatly was not authentic Thai food as everything was cooked separately. I will never ever ever go there again after this experience and I would say to other people not to go either.

Called in late on and received warm welcome - food lovely and reasonably priced. Pad Thai was lovely. Due to nature of the building, not wheelchair friendly so may not return soon but worth a visit.

We are camping nearby and spotted this as we were driving past yesterday. We love our Thai food and just had to try it. Ordered takeaway for collection this evening and oh MY! This is hands down the best Thai food we’ve had outside of Thailand! The Pad Thai and Penang curry were so authentic. We are already planning our next day trip to Ashbourne just so we can eat in the restaurant. The decor and music was so on point we can’t wait to visit again! You MUST try this place, the food is amazing.

A charismatic little restaurant underground in the centre of town. Servers were really nice and attentive and prompt. Food was very tasty and nicely presented but I don't know, maybe anticlimactic, I was expecting more of a taste explosion.....maybe I ordered the wrong things and should return one day and order something else.

Our first visit, but it won’t be the last. Food and service were great. Food was light, fragrant and spicy (we both opted for a 3-chilli stir fry.). They will make dishes spicier or less spicy to order. Unfortunately I didn’t take any photos, but each dish was beautifully presented.

We have eaten in a lot of Thai restaurants in the Midlands and enjoyed the cuisine but the experience over the weekend was the worst by far. Heavy fat ladened so called prawn toasts on thick bread completely in edible main course again heavy ladened with rancid fat along with poor quality ingredients.. One of the waitresses chewing gum throughout the evening whilst serving customers crowned it all.By the time I got home I was suffering with stomach cramps which lasted the rest of the weekend. My suggestion avoid this place like the plague

Beautiful Thai food with an excellent atmosphere

I gave this restaurant a call before visiting to see if they had any vegan options and they were very helpful, explaining that most of their vegetarian dishes were suitable for vegans too. Between us, my husband and I (both vegans) had deep fried tofu, sweetcorn cakes, Penang curry, vegetable stir fry and chips. All were delicious and thoroughly enjoyed. We will definitely be returning.

The food was typical Thai food, freshly cooked and wonderfully tasty. You can even get food from a special district in Thailand. I had stir fry, and it was delicious. The staff are friendly and the restaurant has a charming quirky interior. This is our favourite restaurant in Ashbourne.

What a gem, hidden away in a basement. My daughter and I visited last time we went to Ashbourne charity shop bargsin shopping. The staff are lovely, the food is beautifully presented and great value for money. Perhaps if it were more visible on the main street it would get more business.

What a lucky find, it is very visible if you walk on the streets but luckly we saw it. The food was A-mazing, atmosphere was very relaxed but could be romantic as well. Staff looked a bit overwhelmed but they managed to bring quality nevertheless. Top spot to visit.

Simply the best Thai food we have ever had and we’ve been to Thailand! The roast duck yellow curry, lamb shank massaman and chicken phanang were all beautiful. The prawn toast and prawn crackers were a step above what we have had elsewhere.

I have visited this restaurant many times. The food was excellent as always. On this occasion, I was a little disappointed with the service. I had pre booked a table for 4. When we were shown to the table, it was only set up for 3. We had to ask for the extra cutlery, etc. When we came to pay the bill, it was delivered to the table with only 3 chocolates, yet they had been serving 4 of us for over 2 and a half hours!!! However, I will still go back as the food made up for the lack of attention to detail on service.

Lovely food. What let the place down was the fact that we ate in a barrel vaulted room which carried the sound from the other tables, so you could hear their conversations as if they were sitting next to you. If you wanted to have a nice intimate conversation with your partner then you might feel inhibited knowing that everyone else could hear you.

Phoned up in advance to book a meal for collection for 9 people. The team got the order spot on with nothing missing. The food was delicious and portions were great. Will definitely visit again next time we are in Ashbourne.

Arrived for the early bird menu on Sunday. Very competitive pricing, starters were served 5 minutes after ordering and main was served within 5 minutes of our starter plates being taken away. Staff were friendly and attentive. Would have been nice during our main course for someone to ask us if everything was OK with the food or if we needed anything but apart from this everything was excellent. Would highly recommend.

Lovely food and ambiance. It was my first time trying Thai food, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.. I had green curry chicken with rice, and it was so tasty, my partner got the Pad Thai, and that was so good too.. for starters we had duck spring rolls.. The portions were quite big, we didn't manage to finish everything.. Restaurant itself is located in a basement, like the name suggests, and it's such a hidden gem.. Compliments to our server too as she was really great and made the experience better. We had a good experience and will visit again as long as we stay in the area.

The entrance to this restaurant might make you doubt the decision to eat here but once you are in the basement, the service is very good and the food out of this world. Highly recommended. Not expensive.

Amazing food definitely coming again

Every year we go to Ashbourne, and every year we visit Thai Basement. The setting of the restaurant is charming, and their coconut pancake dessert is always a wonderful end to a great meal. Try their Thai homemade desserts, you will be very pleased.

Had a lovely meal with my wife at the Thai Basement in Ashbourne. This had been recommended by our in-laws and it didn’t disappoint. Unlike other local Thai’s, the menu is more catered towards western tastes but the food and service did not disappoint. Would recommend a visit if you’re in the area and would also advise to make a reservation and not just turn up as it gets very busy.

KEEP AWAY!!!!! After looking online places to eat we thought this would be the perfect place and we were absolutely WRONG!!! We arrived at 8:05 and as soon as we walked trough the door there was two girls chatting at the bar and gave us the evil look saying the restaurant closes at 9pm even though the restaurant was full. You would think after restaurants struggling because of Covid they would want people to come through the door and the staff would be happier to have a job, but certainly not this girls working there. They were absolutely rude and unwelcoming. I think if the owners want to keep the doors open they definitely should rethink who they should employ as they are killing the business. I do NOT recommend and will NEVER be back!!!!!

On way back from Alton Towers my wife asked kids what type of kitchen they want. The answer was Thai. Quick research on Google Maps and the result was inly 1 restaurant 20 miles radius: The Basement. It was great choice! Fantastic food, clean and tidy, friendly staff, reasonable prices. And the best Thai soup I ever had! Thanks!

We were really looking forward to eating here as we all love Thai food. My parents went to pick up the takeaway and didn't get a particularly warm welcome. They also forgot one of our dishes which they had to wait for. Apology was offhand. However, the worst part was our prawn pad Thai that had chicken in it. 2 of our party are pescetarian so couldn't eat it, despite this being the dish we had ordered to share. I actually ate some of the chicken before I realised, which I was furious about as I don't eat chicken. The rest of the food was fine, but this really overshadowed our meal. Would never go back and wanted to warn people

After visiting the Thor's Cave, my friend and I came across this place. We thought you can't go wrong with Thai food can you? How wrong we were! We walked in and whilst waiting to be seated, a lady was wiping the dishes and staring at us with no "Welcome, someone will be with you shortly". The decor in this place looks like it has not been revamped since the 90's. The carpets worn out and the one bathroom in dyer need of a refurbishment. We finally got seated and asked the waitress a very basic dietary question to her response "I don't know". You would think she would have double checked with the chef, but that was to inconvenient for her. I digress, for starters my friend had the battered prawns and I had the Chicken Satay (picture attached, you can see just how luxurious the table cloths are). My friend commented on how off the prawns tasted. Mine was basic, but bearable enough to eat. The mains however came and the smell was so PUNGENT. I cant explain it, the noodles were drenched in sauce and smelt really fishy and off. I commented that there may be a lot of fish sauce in it, however the manager (or owner) informed us there was no fish sauce in the dish. Am I really in a Thai restaurant who doesn't have fish sauce in their Pad Thai? Anyway we tried our first bite and it was disappointing and inedible. I have never taken my food back, but this was horrific. I paid for our inedible food and left! This really ruined our evening.

We went to Thai Basement after it was recommended in the guidebook of the cottage we were staying in. The food was amazing, portion sizes were spot on and service was good. It was a lovely meal to end our trip away.

We LOVED this. A really quirky restaurant, with excellent service and the Sea Bass was amazing. We have eaten in many, many Thai restaurants over the years and this is up there amongst the best. Fabulous.

Absolutely amazing food! Honestly one of my favourite restaurants. The lamb shanks are a must have being so tender with the perfect amount of spice. I highly recommend the duck tamarind and the duck spring rolls. Sweet and sour chicken and even the prawn crackers are to die for. Finish up with a banana cup cake or three to finish off an amazing meal. The staff are kind and all very cheerful with impeccablecustomer service. The restaurant is cosy and the lighting helps keep the perfect late dinner mood. All in all a wonderful place and even better people, extremely impressed.

We enjoyed an unexpected evening meal at this restaurant. The waiting staff were friendly and swift in their service. Portion size was ample and the food we ordered was delicious, served hot and flavoursome. A cosy spot and busy with other satisfied customers, including another family, on a Tuesday evening. Our son described the meal as "brilliant" which for his fussy ways that is 5 star rating.
