If you’re looking for a traditional Sunday Roast with all the trimmings at an affordable price ,this is the place for you .Choose from Chicken ,Beef or Pork and the option of small portions ( which are still more than generous) in a relaxed and friendly pub with an excellent range of wines and beers ,all at sensible prices

We needed a hearty pub meal in Chesterfield town centre before going to the Town v Southend match on Sat 5th March so looked on TA & saw the Barley Mow looked suitable. The pub is very traditionally decorated & clean, there's a few different areas. Groups of fans were standing in the bar area but were well behaved & no problem. The 3 of us sat with a couple of older couples in 1 of the seating areas. The menu is very traditional pub grub which we wanted, I ordered the steak pie, my husband the gammon & our teenage son the chicken burger. The food came in a reasonable amount of time, the pie was packed full of tender steak but unfortunately the pastry was totally soggy which was disappointing. My son's chicken burger was fine but my husband's gammon was a bit well done he said. The peas & salad accompanying the meals were fine. The most disappointing part was the homemade twice cooked chips which I'd so looked forward to, they weren't crisp & were a bit tasteless. The food was piping hot & my pie was accompanied by lashings of lovely gravy, I did eat it all & was full but with a crisper pastry on the pie & better chips it could have been fantastic ! The outstanding feature of this pub was the barmaid, she was a lovely friendly girl rushed off her feet serving alone behind the bar as well as bringing the food out & clearing tables, taking it all calmly in her stride with good humour & on her birthday too !! Exceptional service from a young girl (sorry didn't ask her name, glad she was off duty at 2pm & hope she enjoyed the rest of her birthday. ) The meals were hearty & filling & with a bit of improvement could be excellent.

Popped in to the Barley Mow yesterday for a delicious Sunday Lunch. The food was excellent, the Roast Beef was tender and cooked to perfection, the vegetables really tasty and the Roast Potatoes were crunchy on the outside and lovely and fluffy inside - The Yorkshire Pud again perfect along with the gravy. The staff were friendly, and looked after us very well. Would highly recommend!

Despite living in Chesterfield for 20 years I’ve never visited The Barley Mow, but a colleague fancied a fish finger sandwich for his leaving do so we decamped here at dinner time. I’m quite a fussy eater so always a bit concerned when going somewhere new, but the pulled pork and chips (£5.50) went down a treat. There were already a number of tables filled when the nine of us arrived, but still managed to find a corner to ourselves. Service was excellent - from the speed of taking the drinks and food orders, the speed of the food coming out and it came exactly as ordered. After finishing our meals we weren’t rushed or made to feel unwelcome and definitely a new favourite that I’ll be revisiting again.

Called in to the Barley Mow recently for a Lunchtime Drink. Quite a busy Pub that is popular with Male Horse-Racing enthusiasts. Good choice of Drinks , friendly Service and a good-looking Food Menu , which I will try on a future visit. I did not spend a lot of time here , but as I am recently a Resident of the Chesterfield area , I am keen to give new places a try. I will return and I can recommend this Pub accordingly.

The barley mow has to be one of the best places in chesterfield to enjoy reasonably priced home cooked food and real chips as well. The menu is small but varied and the steak in guinness special was very nice. Def a change from the conveyor belt selection offered at other local bars.

Decided at last minute to call in for lunch, as hadn't been there for a few years. Thursday lunch - mid December, the majority of the tables were already reserved. Luckily it was just myself and a friend who managed to get a couple of spare seats. The bar staff were very approachable and friendly. We took our seats and decided to order the Light Bite portion of the Homemade Steak Pie & Chips - it was FABULOUS! Food service was quite quick and for me it was just the right size for a luncheon, any so very very tasty. I enjoyed every morsel. My friend and I will definitely be going back - as it had become forgotten in our minds as it wasn't on our current 'side' of town. Well worth a couple of mins walking to have some more of those pies!

Visited today with my 83 year old Mum. Staff very accommodating and seated us at a table with good access for my Mum. Food all homemade and really really good quality. Mum had a 'smaller' portion which was just right for her. In fairness, it would have been just right for me as I had the 'normal' and this was huge! Really enjoyable for with fresh cooked beef and chicken as well as a lamb choice. Definitely recommended.

Ended up here after vacating other pubs that didn’t take credit cards. Friendly to the business trip. Three real ale on the rail, Black Sheep, Doom-Bar and some lager that I didn’t try so can’t say. Food was outstanding, well presented, tasty and filling. Quiet environment populated by the local crew, which was great for me to read and relax. Steak and ale pie with mushy peas and chips. What more could you ask for? Oh, yeah, decent real ale. Black Sheep always hits the mark for me and tried the Doom-Bar for fun. Great service and friendly staff. Will come out to this pub again. Recommended!

Don't usually bother with reviews, but I have to say that this was the best pub Sunday lunch we've had in a long time. All home cooked, fresh veg, perfect roasties, home made Yorkshires, nothing frozen. They even did a smaller plate which was ideal for my mum. I'd probably go small plate next time as it a very generous helping! We have also eaten from the menu previously and their lasagne is highly recommended. Very friendly staff and the flowers outside look amazing.

Decided to do our yearly Cheltenham race festival beano at chesterfield this year. Not knowing chesterfield at all I took a risk getting in touch with Ady to see if he could accommodate all 18 of us in The Barley Mow. We turned up a bit apprehensive as it seemed such a small pub. What a surprise we all got. Ady and Sarah couldn't do enough for us, whilst still entertaining their regular guests. Food absolutely fabulous. Bar service absolutely fabulous. They serve proper chips too instead of wedges!! Well done barley mow. The 3 courses we had were tasty, filling and good value. Our 3 course xmas dinner was £16.95 per person but they do have 2 meals for £12. No pub parking but plenty of parking in the area. They did a few small children in eating. Lovely afternoon had.

Although I have been to Chesterfield many many times I have never eaten in this establishment before. My friend took me there for lunch last week. To be honest being a Town centre pub I really didn't expect a great deal from the food but how wrong could I have been. I had steak pie and chips, you might think how can you drool over such a basic meal, but OMG it was one of the best tasting pub meals I have had in a long time. The pie (homemade) was full of lean steak which melted in the mouth and the chips well the best ever. I was told by my friend that this place was noted for their chips and they advertise this fact.... not wrong either. Usually I am not a big fan of chips when eating out as they are pretty boring. Not these oh on. lovely crispy and brown I could eat them every day.... This might have been my first trip for food here, but it certainly won't be the last, as long as they keep up these standards ... I will definitely be back.

Had the fish finger and mushy pea sandwich. The fish fingers were grey in colour, meaning cheap minced fish. Spoke to the landlord about the poor quality of them and was told "I don't advertise them as fillet. " which is very true. A bit disappointed that we weren't offered an alternative. We didn't eat them. He asked us where else we'd get it for£4.95? I told him that he could still make profit with good fingers.

The pub its self is nice but they really need to review the staff they employ !!! . Some work collegues and i went there for a few after works drinks , i have always had a habit of ripping beer mats dont quite know why i do it but have done for 30 years . Bar maid came to collect glasses and asked whod been ripping beer mats , said sorry its me and was then given a lecture in a disgusting manner about not doing it as they cost money !! later came back and collected more glasses and had another go about same , i stated me and my freinds were actually spending in the pub and got told again that they cost money . It wasnt the fact that i was told about this its how i was told , this piece of mutton dressed as lamb really needs to go on a customer relations course or better still kicked out of the pub as she is ruining what could be a nice pub , my collegues and i will definetley chose another pub from now on for after work drinks and would recommend others to do the same
