Although there were lots of staff they didn’t quite manage to stay on top of the service. For example, we asked for dessert menus which never arrived so we asked for the bill and left instead. Food was good, not great. Lots of salad to bolster up the pork and beef starters. Nice Camembert starter though. Mains of crab thermidor… with skinny fries and more salad. Steak…. with skinny fries and…..salad!! Pie of the day was very good with fresh vegetables. Pleasant ambiance. Would return though.

So, we were just looking for somewhere different to have lunch and my partner Simon came across this wonderful little gem. All we could say is Wow!! We sat by the fire for a bit of lunch on New Years Eve. Oh my goodness we were so well looked after. Bekka, the friendliest and most helpful of managers, couldn’t do enough for us. We had Joe, Carys and Amelia looking after us too. We both had the most delicious duck with red cabbage cooked in mulled wine (omg) with fondant potatoes and perfectly cooked veg, followed by apple and cranberry crumble and custard (yum) which we both shared. All washed down with exquisite wine and local beer… I cannot recommend this warming friendly restaurant enough but I don’t want to big it up too much otherwise we won’t be able to get booked in for the future!!!! We’ll definitely be back and be bringing our friends… Can’t wait!!! Thank you so much

This pub has a nice atmosphere had a good menu, but they need to be careful with staff and pricing. We ordered soups only because we just wanted starters and when the barman said do you want them as a main course we said yes them just one portion of chips to share. However, when the bill came instead of being charged £9 the price on the menu we were charged £18 each. It’s not uncommon to just order starters in a pub instead of a main course, but when the waiter says do you want them as a main course we don’t expect them to be double the price because they certainly weren’t double the size ! Probably the most expensive soup I’ve ever had in the world. We decided to let it pass while we were there because we didn’t want to get the young Barman in trouble and would’ve ended up in a long discussion. However, this does need to be addressed as if you’re going to charge a lot more than menu price you need to explain at the time

Food overall was fine. My soup was cold and I politely asked a lovely waitress if it could be warmed up. I had the soup brought back out to me by another member of staff. They made it clear not to touch the now ‘hot’ bowl and as they placed it down in front of me they sarcastically said 'you wanted it hot, now it's hot'. You'd expect soup to be hot anyways so l'm unsure why this request had rubbed them up the wrong way. Their attitude left a bitter taste in my mouth. Not to mention that we received the bill and were forgotten about, 25 mins later we managed to pay.

I try to avoid negative reviews since I'm not sure they're helpful, however I don't want others to have a similar experience at the Bakers Arms. We visited with family for the "award winning" Sunday lunch but it was a disaster from start to finish. Our table wasn't available at the time booked, once seated we waited 30 mins for someone to take our order (we had to chase them or else it would have been longer), another 30 minutes before our food was brought out then the meal itself consisted of tough beef, soggy Yorkshire pudding and a bizarre smorgasbord of largely unidentifiable pureed & diced vegetables. Other diners who had waited a similar amount of time for their food were told they had to leave before they were ready since their table was booked. I wish I'd paid more attention to the other similar reviews here rather than being blinded by a few 5* reviews. If you visit for a "pub lunch" then you might be satisfied, however if you're expecting quality gastropub food & great service you'll be hugely disappointed.

To be frank, I stopped going out for Sunday pub roasts a long time ago.. partly because all that ever seemed to be on offer was pork, beef or lamb, (meats I don’t actually enjoy… not for any trendy reasons, I simply don’t like their tastes, alas), and I would never see my favourites of chicken or turkey roast ever on the menu, cuts of meat I greatly enjoy and can eat.. er, until the cows come home! The other reason was the fare I did opt for was often never really hot, always over-priced & usually leaving me disappointed and wishing I’d chosen a simple burger or fish & chips instead. But when two close friends invited me out to lunch this Sunday just passed, I jumped at the chance purely because it looked like being a lovely sunny day at the end of Autumn, I loved their company.. and they suggested a pub in the beautiful Meon Valley, a location I like very much. I was also very pleasantly surprised when we bowled up at The Bakers Arms in Droxford, a village pub I’ve driven past countless times without actually going in and had often wondered what it was like inside.. but when we pulled into the wee car park, it was rammed full.. oh I though,t this is going to be a long wait in an obviously popular pub…but no matter, I was on a rare day off.. so just go with the flow! As we trooped inside, indeed the pub was heaving, with a massive party at one central table in particular, but I was enjoying the day and so no problem…however we were immediately shown to our pre-booked table, (a nice wee alcove by the front door) and menus were proffered and my pal’s order for a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc very speedily taken. Seemingly just moments later, before I’d even had a chance to take in the lunch menu, some small warm breads arrived, followed immediately by the wine..(which turned out to be the most delicious New Zealand Sauvignon I think I’ve ever tasted.. bliss!)..and enjoying my first sips I looked down at the Sunday menu and oh joy, a rare sighting of my much-missed roast chicken on offer before my very eyes.. my day with my smashing friends was getting better..! Minutes later, with our orders placed, we sat back to enjoy the wine & our surroundings.. but holy moly! we had hardly started to chat when, despite the pub being flat-chat with other guests & diners, our 3 roasts arrived in what must have been the fastest table delivery I have ever experienced.. absolutely cracking! Not only that, when I looked down, what was set before me was the most attractive looking meal I have seen in years.. for served on a large, square plate was the most enticing, cordon-bleu-style chicken roast, (except this was not 'miniature' cordon-bleu fare designed for a skinny-Minnie model, but for a growing lad... who should not be growing any more..a generously portioned & superbly presented meal to be sure): Two large & very plump slices of roast chicken, a Yorkshire pudding the size of a small planet, the most enticing crispy roast potatoes, a beautiful selection of interesting looking vegetables….all served in the most stylish of manners.. a captivating image and I only wish I had taken a photo of it but my ‘phone was back in the office on charge, sadly! To say I was looking forward to diving into it it was something of an understatement.. so with my fingers crossed, in I went and I have to say that it was even better than it looked.. the meal was piping hot, the chicken delicious & cooked to perfection, the roast potatoes offered a crispy outer & a fluffy inside, the gravy was very flavour-some and the myriad vegetables were just the tastiest & perfectly presented combination I have enjoyed in many a long while. My two companions were also much taken by their meal choices, one a traditional beef and the other a combination of roast meats… (though I am sure I had picked the better option!), and the next half hour or so was, to use a hackneyed. (but in this case very apt) phrase, ‘a feast for my taste buds’.. absolute roast chicken perfection.. and the chat fell away as my concentration was focussed on this very generously portioned & sumptuous meal. Looking up from from time-to-time, I noticed all other diners were similarly enjoying their Sunday lunches, all very professionally served up by a young, enthusiastic, ultra-polite & very attentive serving team.. wonderful service, which all added to the joy of my rare free Sunday. Trying hard to make my lunch last longer than it should have been in a such a friendly happy & relaxed atmosphere, (despite the pub being absolutely full to the gunnels), sadly it was indeed soon time to leave ..with me happily recalling what it was like to feel the relaxing, well-fed afterglow of a superb Sunday roast as of days long gone… something I actually thought I wouldn’t experience again..! Then my day got even better for as I prepared to pay my share, my pals grinned and waved away my proffered card saying ‘lunch was on them’! My day was indeed complete.. but after such a wonderful dining experience I really cannot wait to get back to the Bakers Arms again to experience another similar Sunday afternoon .. with the next Sunday roast for my friends & I definitely being on me..! To be honest, I can’t recall using this many genuinely-offered superlatives in any of the myriad dining reviews I’ve previously penned for Trip Advisor, but in this summary they are most apposite and very well deserved.. ..... and so a massive, personal thanks to all of the team at The Bakers Arms (especially chef!) for providing my pals & I with such a fabulous Sunday lunch..!

The eight of us enjoyed a delicious lunch at The Baker's Arms this week- a treat after self-catering for a few days whilst staying nearby. The chicken pies were well-filled and very satisfying, and those who had the fish pie were equally impressed with the amount of fish. We were initially rather disappointed with the few vegetables that were served on our huge plates, but some cauliflower cheese arrived separately. Suffice it to say, only three of us had room for desserts! The crumble and custard was excellent.

Having been here for lunch on several occasions and found it very good, we were so disappointed when we came for dinner with family to celebrate our Ruby Wedding, When the main course was served, they were only warm, one of us sent it back the others just decided to eat theirs even though the food was lukewarm. We were asked if we would like dessert, on ordering to be told that they didn't have the desserts we wanted so only 3 out of the 6 of us had dessert, why ask us if you didn't have any to offer. This was overall a disappointing evening which was a shame as previously our visits have been good. Sadly because of this I would now hesitate returning.

Nice place, friendly people, lovely area, good beer, good range of veggies on the Sunday roast. However, I wouldn't recommend vegetarians go on a Sunday. I know we're difficult (one gluten free veggie, one vegan), but our 'veggie roast' centerpiece was a burger (albeit beyond-meat, but still a burger and not labelled as such), which is a little odd however much gravy you put on it! ;) We appreciate them trying to accommodate the gluten-free veggie member of our party, but it's slightly strange to have mushroom arancini with gravy and roast dinner veggies! The meat eaters were reasonably happy, and maybe other days are fine for vegetarians, but we won't be back on a Sunday at least.

The Baker's Arms has ALWAYS been a fantastic pub for food, service and atmosphere. I remember other visits over the years where we've been able to chat to the staff about the food and have really been made to feel welcome. I would say it was always a go-to for a special occasion, a place where you could guarantee a high-quality dining experience in a cosy pub setting.Something has changed, and not for the better. We arrived on Sunday late afternoon to avoid the lunchtime rush and were directed to a table set for four people, so I went back to the bar and queried because i'd booked for five people. I was told 'we're hoping table nine will go soon' - which immediately made me wonder what the 1.5-2hr table usage policy was for if the restaurant isn't going to stick to it and ensure diners have the table the system allows them to book, ready on-time. Luckily within a few minutes we were moved to a large table.I don't know if my ask to sit at a table big enough for five people was what annoyed them but from that point the staff paid us the bare-minimum attention. We found the non-fresh orange juice (from the bar tap) tasted off, it was replaced twice but no apology given. Was it because we suggested the line might need cleaning?Drinks in-hand we were looking forward to the complimentary breads, but ours never arrived. What irked me particularly was when other diners were seated at the table next to us and received theirs in moments, along with noticeably friendlier service. No time to ask about the bread, our roasts appeared on extremely hot plates, but the food itself was not hot through. As usual the quality of the food itself was good, as it should be for £17-£18.50 a plate. We should have made our drinks last a little longer as despite a table of empty glasses half way through the meal we were never offered any more drinks. I saw other diners getting up and going to the bar themselves. We weren't asked how our food/experience was at any point during our visit, really gave it a "We won't ask because we don't care" vibe.Even when gathering up menus and handing them back to the waitress, she didn't say 'Thanks'.By the time we came to the end of our visit there were 8 diners and 5 barmaids/waitresses behind the bar who did not thank us for coming or wish us a good evening. Mum called out "Goodbye!" and got a "Oh, bye" in response. Perhaps we'd interrupted their conversation? If The Baker's Arms management read this, please-please remind these young ladies that in hospitality it's the little things that count, manners and common-courtesy cost nothing but still mean a lot to some people.I do hope things improve but it left such a sour taste we won't be in a hurry to return.

Sunday lunch. We ordered drinks and food. I ordered a Gin and Tonic to enjoy with the promised complimentary bread and olives and we ordered a bottle of red to enjoy with our lunch. Next thing we knew, our roast lunches came out with the pre-dinner drinks and the wine and there was no sign at all of the bread and olives, nor was there any mention of them. The wine was not the bottle we ordered and no mention was made of this being a substitute - it was simply put on the table. It was actually a very acceptable alternative, but we should have been advised that what we ordered was not available and asked if we wanted to accept this bottle as an alternative. Not a cheap experience and we expected a lot better for the money. Luckily, we were with very good friends, but it was especially disappointing as it was our treat to them for a birthday celebration, and had we not known them as well as we do, it would have been a very embarrassing experience.

It can be said fairly briefly: excellent food, good beer, good ambience and friendly service. In a classic Meon Valley village. We came as a family group for Sunday lunch, with a mixture of vegetarians and carnivores, and none of us were disappointed. A good balance - very much an ideal country pub.

Having been extremely happy regulars for quite a few years, primarily for Sunday lunch, it is disappointing my feeling the need to write this review.Whilst the food was OK, it’s not a patch on the standard pre-pandemic. That said, the real slump with the Bakers Arms relates to the majority of staff now employed. They service was rushed, to say the least, very impersonal and at some times plan surly. The staff gave off the impression of those not wishing to wait tables, due to this being beneath them.As a business owner of circa 30 years, one of the things I’ve learnt is poor staff can cause a business to fail. Moreover, in today’s market where the hospitality industry is in dire straights, I sincerely hope the owners recognize the fact they have some issues, that will, in my opinion, impact negatively on sales due to customer choosing to dine where they are appreciated.

We arrived early for our 1pm booking. Saw that the place was dog friendly but was not expecting them to have an animal on their owners lap sitting at a dining table. How is this hygienic?Anyhow, was met and seated and place did seem quite appealing.Ordered home made bread for 4 to start (only 4 slices?) which was about average. At 2pm we were asked if we wanted puddings having not yet the main courses!!! This is not what you would describe as caring waiting. The mains arrived about 2.10, two being dried up and barely warm and other two just about acceptable. Two were therefore rejected and replacements declined. The owner came to see us a little later and was genuinely upset and a compromise was reached. There did appear to be staffing difficulties but if you are unable to serve what is being offered don't try. This was a birthday lunch as well.Have eaten in US, Canada and more than a dozen countries in Europe so know about dining out.

Wonderful pub with great attention to detail. We visited at lunchtime and had delicious food. The service was friendly, well-informed and impeccable. I had the best vegan burger I have ever had and my husband loved his fish pie. It's attractive inside with an authentic feel and fresh flowers on all the tables and the outdoor seating is atmospheric. We will definitely go back. An outstanding pub.

We were extremely disappointed with our £18 roast. The pork was too fatty , the beef was raw in places, the roast potatoes were hard with virtually no potato filling, the Yorkshire pudding was stodgy (like batter), the veg was dry and over cooked and we mistook our sweet potato for crackling! One of the worst roasts we ever had for the price. Would not come again.

I found the Bakers in The Good Pub Guide and it was an excellent find. The village the pub is in is lovely and the drive in is full of picturesque countryside. The pub itself is fresh and modern inside with an exceptionally varied menu accessible by phone using a QR code on a beer mat. As well as having a varied menu, the food really is excellent and the service is slick and not overbearing. I had the Camembert to start and the fish pie main (photos attached of both) and the presentation, size and freshness of both dishes were excellent. I didn’t need a desert after all that but the menu was again wide and appealing. The pub offers good value for money also. I’d thoroughly recommend a visit.

Looking for a place to meet friends in between our two houses by chance we found The Bakers Arms. How lucky for us! The pub is in a picturesque village and was an exceptional place to have a long awaited reunion. The service was first class, the food simply delicious and full marks for letting us linger over coffee when they could have chased us out. This really is what all pubs should be ! Thank you to all at The Baker's Arms.

We visited this pub for a family meal whilst staying in the area as we had two dogs with us and it claimed to be doggie friendly. I emailed ahead a couple of weeks before to make sure about the dogs but never got a reply for days. We were welcomed and given a corner table because of the dogs. There were no specials which we were looking forward to choosing from. A lot of the food was very ordinary and quite frankly it was clear it was not homemade, just came out of the freezer especially the so called potato puffs, I have a bag of them from Tesco. My husband and I had steak which was not supplied with a steak knife and we found it extremely tough and could only eat a couple of mouthfuls, it wasn’t cheap at £25. On leaving we were met with a very rude comment from a man on another table who said he didn’t know why we had bought the dogs and they should be banned from pubs. We were upset by this comment, so why when it’s advertised as a doggie friendly pub did he go there? Obviously a local who didn’t like visitors. Not sure we would visit again if ever in the area.

I visited when covid restrictions meant we had to sit outdoors. It poured with rain and sometimes hale during our visit, but we were warm, dry and cosy the whole time thanks to their great staff and well thought out outside areas under marquees lit with fairy lights and heat lamps. We were also provided with blankets during our stay and when we came to leave one of the waiters came out with an umbrella to walk us across the car park! The food was great too. I'm vegetarian and went with a vegan and a meat eater and all of us loved our meals, drinks and desserts (which included vegan apple crumble and champagne sorbet!). Highly recommended.

Firstly, after having visited many places I will say it is overpriced. If you are to charge £18 for a roast dinner then it must be worth £18.The beef wasn't soft enough and the pork was dry, thank God it came with a nice mustard sauce. The waiter was nice and attentive but bless him trying to justify the fact that they did not offer starters on a Sunday because the kitchen is too small... Maybe if you did not include veg that dont go like courgette and breaded cauliflower or trying too hard cooking 8 different vegtables you would have more space in the kitchen. The square plates do not look great either!!!! They do not go with the rest of the crockery. Plain round plates for children and coloured one for desserts. I am confused! It is almost as if they are just using whatever they have. Surely the chef needs to visit other places and learn a bit. The place lacks atmosphere and even if they offer kids meals, fish and chips we ordered, they sent overcooked frozen fish fingers and chips that of course my child would not eat. And she is not fussy! A tip: if you are to do roast dinners only, make them great, do not focus on a 1cm diced celeriac cube and vegetables that do not go! Head chef go out of your little kitchen. The hunt continues for a great roast dinner in my area!!!!

After thoughts of going out, we decided to change the area where we would normally go. We booked up and went to the bakers arms for the first time. My surprise was that no one greeted you under today’s circumstances we had to go to the bar to enquire about booking. No temperature taken and no one making sure you scanned the app. Starters okay but mains vegetables cold of which they duly changed. Found the portions small for the price they were charging. Putting everything together from other reviews I was expecting a much better experience which didn’t materialised. Staff putting meals down between us rather than from the end of the table again which I found strange under today’s conditions.Overall too pricey for what you are getting and a lesson to be learned under COVID conditions.

My husband, our 1 year old and I were staying locally for a staycation and looking for a pub where we could eat an early supper before little one’s bedtime. The Bakers Arms were brilliantly helpful, responding quickly on messenger to inform us they could open the kitchen earlier for us and allowed us to preorder. We were in and out 2 courses within the hour which for us was perfect, not giving little one a chance to meltdown! The food was beautiful, I especially loved the chocolate brownie and passion fruit pannacotta desserts. Thank you again Bakers Arms for being a godsend to two tired parents looking for an excellent meal!

Having not been to enamoured in the past we booked a midweek table as part of the current government offer to give them another go. On arrival we were promptly shown to our table and ordered drinks. The menu was brief, as are many at the moment, but offered some interesting dishes. We both opted for the crab thermidor and were very pleased with our choice. The dish was very, very tasty and along with the nice atmosphere this pub is now back on our list to visit again.

While out walking we called in at lunchtime. We had not booked a table but sat at a table outside and was told by bar staff to move as it was reserved. There were no signs showing reservations on any table. We moved to another table and then ordered a drink each and half way through were asked to move again as the table we were sat on was reserved. We were thinking of ordering food but quickly drank our drinks, paid and left. Not the best experience or the most friendly greeting. Don't think I will bother going there again when in the area.

We had a fantastic meal for four. The food was tasty and freshly prepared. The deserts were good with reasonable portions. The only reason I did not give five stars is because the atmosphere was flat and nonexistent. I am not sure if this was because the team felt a bit unsure as a result of Covid.. There was a waitress who was making a huge effort and was chatty. We will definitely return and hope the atmosphere will have changed.

My Dad booked a table at The Otter for his 75th birthday for food on 20th May. We were asked to turn up at 6.50 pm for the table to be ready (which it wasn’t when we arrived at the stated time). There were 5 meals, 4 of which were completely unacceptable for the following reasons:1) There were no peas with any of the meals (scampi, cod etc) that were advertised as having them, despite the fact this was the first week that restaurants had opened inside after lockdown. Peas are a pub staple!2) My father’s chicken madras looked totally unappetising- tiny pieces of shredded chicken in a sauce which was contained barely any curry at all. It looked as though it had been thrown onto a plate. There was no flavour to the rice whatsoever. 3) My brother’s burger was tiny and tasteless. 4) The chips provided with 3 of the meals looked old and were dry. They looked and tasted as though they had been reheated.5) Both my mother and father had bad stomachs the next day, despite my father only having drunk 1 pint of beer and my mother half a bitter shandy that evening. My parents did not wish to complain at the time as it was supposed to be a family celebration; however, my father rang the next day to say how unsatisfactory the meal had been. The manager told him in response to his complaint that “it was the way food was always done” there. Zero apologies or acknowledgement -dreadful. We remember The Otter from a couple of years ago and it was absolutely nothing like this. Suffice it to say, we will not be making a return visit to an establishment which doesn’t care about serving decent food and to whom customer service seems to be an alien concept.

Great pub down a passage off the High Street, so often missed, hence mostly a locals pub. Nonetheles, we found it a few years back and visit every time in Winchester which is only once or twice a year. We are probably not recognised but we are always welcomed by locals and staff. It's a sports bar and the prices are cheaper than most. There is always a good atmosphere. We'll be back next time.
