Only had lunch meeting 2 friends. Food from a limited menu is excellent and served in a friendly and happy manner. We were lucky with the weather, hot and sunny amongst all these rainy days. Also the Angel has a lovely garden to drink or dine in. A small car park helps. Definitely worth a visit.

We popped in for lunch on my birthday and had a fantastic experience. A beautiful pub with wonderful service - lemon water brought over immediately without asking, prompt and friendly waiters! But the star of the show was the food, it was incredible. My fiancee had the steak which melted in his mouth, and I had the small fish & chips. Mine was DELICIOUS, a light batter with white flakey fish, and the most incredible chips. Excellent value for such high quality. Thank you so much, we will definitely be back!

Amazing place, quite possibly the best fish and chips I’ve ever experienced. The batter was sublime but the real star of the show were the mushy peas. I’ve never had mushy peas that good. Staff were also extremely attentive and the decor / vibe was perfect. A must visit if you’re in the area 🫶

Lovely pub. Stayed for a weekend and had one dinner there. Great food, but the pub itself was cold inside and by the time we ate at 8pm, was emptying out so lacked a little atmosphere. Rooms are nicely done with lots of character (and were nicely warm!), however our room at the front of the pub was very noisy from both the pub (early in the morning from the staff) and the road outside. Final mention to some very friendly, helpful staff. Thank you.

My partner and I visited for lunch on a cold winter's day, accompanied by our dog. We were all made very welcome. The staff were informal yet attentive. Service was timely. The food (squid, soup, venison pies) was excellent. Only downsides: it could have been warmer (even though we sat next to the one functioning radiator); whilst tables were assiduously cleaned, the floor looked as though it could do with a deep clean. We will happily return - probably on a warmer day . . .

If you offer just one vegetarian option on your menu then at least make it better than a pasta dish with tomatoes and feta. Would it kill you to offer a veg option for a Sunday roast? Inflexible service unwilling to swap the mandatory starter for a side of vegetables with a poor excuse about not being 'able'. Diet coke was flat, sent it back to be replaced with yet more flat diet coke. Our party spent £230+ for our meal and it was a disappointing experience.

Dinner for 6. Everyone ordered different food in the menu. I had squid for starters and it was very salty. I asked for sea bream with chips instead of potatoes. It came with potatoes and chips bowl at the side. I told the male waiter my requested food and he came back with ONLY a sea bream on a plate. NO LEMON, no dressing, not even a sprinkle of anything. He should have explained that the potatoes were all mixed with veg that they cld not be separated. What’s more he rolled his eyes when I tried to make it right. Requested English mustard didn’t get to the table either. Other than these incidents, all other food were delicious and friendly ladies staff. Food presentation need to be improved.

My wife and I looked forward to returning to the Angel Inn after the latest lockdown. We were quickly shown to a table on the lovely outside terrace, where we were protected from the elements by a large canopy. The staff were cheerful, polite, and efficient as usual! After perusing the new, shorter menu, we chose 2 main courses, which did not fail to satisfy: an aged 10 oz. ribeye steak garnished with a field mushroom, pickled onion rings, and a salad, and roast strip loin beef, with roasted root vegetables, roast potatoes, and a large Yorkshire pudding. But the surprisingly delicious delight was the shared dessert: chocolate brioche bread and butter pudding, caramelised banana, and honeycomb ice cream, which was as tasty as it sounds! A great experience, and so good to be sitting down outside with a proper meal again.

Our second visit to The Angel Inn was as pleasant as our first a couple of weeks before! Whether sitting outside in the courtyard at the rear or inside the traditional pub with low wooden-beamed ceilings, the service was friendly, polite, and efficient! I’d like to give a shout-out to Jana who gave us tip-top service on both occasions. My wife and I started with the tasty bread board and grilled mackerel with beetroot, followed by beef fillet carpaccio for her and organic flat-iron steak for me, both delicious. In lieu of the sticky toffee pudding we had initially requested, which had run out, we settled for a dark chocolate delice with strawberry ice cream. Just lovely! Afterwards, we walked in nearby Petworth House Park with our dogs. Also recommended.

We stayed at The Angel Inn for a long weekend, which was terrific. The room was absolutely gorgeous, comfortable and homely. It had been meticulously cleaned, with extras (refreshments, bathroom accessories) and soft furnishings carefully selected to respect the COVID-19 restrictions. Breakfast choices were compromised as a result of the new COVID regulations, but despite this, it was an enjoyable meal. Greatly recommended. We visited the restaurant for one evening which didn't match the standard of the hotel, unfortunately, but was very acceptable and convenient. Having been disappointed by Petworth House, one of the ladies said they were meeting thier hubby for Dinner in the Angel Inn and recommended to eat there. Good COVID measures. So we gave it a try and were greeted by Sam who was superb in her approach. We sat in the garden which was really nice. Sam took our drinks order and Joanne took our food order. We had the Salt & Pepper and The Tomato salad - whilst these were only starters they were very nice. Sam & Joanne were excellent and made the experience that much more enjoyable. We had a laugh with them both and that is always a great sign of good staff. It is with a heavy heart I write this as my partner and I have very happy memories of the Angel having for many years enjoyed the roast beef on Sundays. Much of our enjoyment was engaging with the staff specifically Mark, Will, Josh and Chris behind the bar who was excellent and is still so to this day, as well as being a friendly face. Not so, are the current management and other Staff. Beautiful building and gardens but after visiting last Saturday and returning an empty glass to the bar I was met with an extremely rude young lady who was almost aggressive ( she will know who she is ). Can I suggest she looks for a career change perhaps in the kitchen where she would not have to interact with the public. We also had to pay by card as they wouldn't accept cash but we didn't see any notice of this. The Angel is one of Petworth's finest pubs. Sadly, since it reopened it seems to have lost its spirit. I concur with many of the comments recently posted. The food remains good if a bit pricey. The waiting staff are nice and efficient. The problem is the management. There seems to be no friendly publican to greet you (like the wonderful Mark who used to preside with a smile on his face and a friendly greeting) - just some tense and grim-faced management and a lady behind the reception counter who seems out of her depth & probably should not be in a customer-facing service business. Pubs need to be friendly and hospitable - this one currently is definitely not.Another gripe too: maybe the staff need to wear masks inside (is this some sort of Hancock edict?) but outside, in the vast garden, the mask-wearing seems excessive and uncaring for the staff's comfort and welfare.

We booked a room for one night as we have friends nearby. The room and bathroom were lovely and the front of house staff charming and helpful. The food, however, was absolutely disgraceful. Our dinner starter , which was cold took one hour to arrive when all others were served ahead of us. The lamb special was off by 8pm so my husband had the spaghetti, this arrived cold, the pasta boiled within an inch of its life and chopped into tiny little pieces like baby food.Breakfast the following morning was all carbs as there was no chef to cook breakfast; the coffee took 20 minutes to arrive and the croissants were obviously shop bought and stale, Lidl does a far better one for 39p! Our room alone cost £170, so in this category one should expect a really delicious dinner and breakfast . The staff were mortified by the slow service from the kitchen and the really awful food and this was removed from our bill, however this does not make up for a dreadful experience.

Extraordinary experience considering that I have a very open mind about supporting all businesses trying to get back to some sort of normailty. Didn't get offerred a drink by the person who showed us to our table. Waitress No 1, whilst very personable ,didn't know the menu & got our order wrong initially until highlighted (would have gone very wrong). Waitress No 2 then appeared asking for our order claerly unaware that we had already ordered from Waitress No 1. All drinks arrived together even though wine should have arrived with meal & no ice bucket. Wine left to open ourselves. Starters arrived OK with Waitor No 3. Mains arrived with Waitor No 4 swimming in gravy ( really, is it too much to ask for gravy/sauce/jus to be served separately in a boat) & when asked for horseradish (this was after all roast beef) arrived with another person wo served this as a nano portion in a shot glass! This was not one portion, let alone the two that were required. He also asked at this stage if we would like a bucket for the wine. This was then supplied. Waitress No 2 then appeared at various stages clearly with nothing else to do. After the mains, Waitress No 2 then asked if we would like desert to which we replied to give us 5 minutes. She then said no problem. After at least 15 minutes we then saw her with her coat on & left. Since we had not seen Waitress No 1 again that really was our last port of call. Had to go up & ask for the bill as noone was interested & got a service charge added on to add insult to injury. In closing, very happy to support all these businesses to keep them going but this is no excuse for shoddy, inept service & I will therefore not be going back to this establishment for a return visit.

Having seen off the Boxing Day hunt at nearby Petworth Park we were looking for a place to have lunch and I suddenly remembered The Angel Inn and was able to book a table for lunch. Given what a miserable wet day it was this was a relief and it helped that they have the parking area in front of the Inn. The place was buzzing which is a testament to it’s quality.I find the interior of the Inn very appealing and welcoming. Country smart and fresh yet still sublimely cosy. We were shown to our table and had a very attentive young waiter. We ordered a number of things as starters to share between us. The Butterfly King Prawns with Sweet Chilli Sauce and Salt and Pepper Squid were particularly good and would draw one back again just for them. It was a shame that there were quite a number of things which were sold out which we would have fancied such as the Flat Iron Steak, but c’est la vie. The Treacle Tart was a thing of beauty and divine. I think it’s a particularly strong option for lunch in Petworth.Getting small things right like good drinks, bread and nibbles matched with really good attentive service all add to making it a memorable experience, easy to recommend and to return to.

We felt very unwelcome and whats more, is that they had the cheek to put a 12% service charge on the bill without asking? Regardless of whether it is optional, it is a cheeky way of guilt tripping customers into paying it. I will definitely not be eating here again and will be advising to friends and family the same.

Fast forward to the day and 1 hour before we were due to arrive, we get an email stating that they have cancelled our meal. This is due to ‘not replying to the latest email’ despite replying to all emails and receiving replies. They also stated they attempted to call, however this is a shameful lie. Whilst I appreciate that the service charge can be deducted, in my view I do not like the mandatory adding of such a discretionary charge to the presented bill. Perhaps it is due to the establishment being owned by someone who originates from the US where tipping appears to be obligatory? Whatever the reason this practice tainted my experience and knocks my rating down to 3. May I make a plea to the management to reconsider this irritating practice, please?

Crust was a bit overdone and side of Italian green cabbage was inedible. (Free dessert offered in compensation for the errors.) Another party member had sea bass which she said was excellent. I had a small fish and chips with a really superb beer batter coating. Very flavorful and haddock seemed fresh. Chips were large and nicely cooked and garden peas also flavorful.

We were a pre-wedding party of 17 people, which I expect can be a challenge to some chefs.

We booked to eat here based on word of mouth and website and were expecting high end pub food. Unfortunately this isn't what we received. Firstly, I'd like to mention our lovely young waiter who was the only shining light. He managed to keep smiling through the service despite being publicly undermined by the manager on a couple of occasions. Well done you. So onto the food which was underwhelming. My husband ordered the 'special' starter of king prawns which arrived with some dry toast, very odd. No dressing or dip or even butter. Fortunately my squid rings did arrive with a dip so we were able to share. In the absence of anything more appealing to order, we both had the fish and chips which came with overcooked batter and stodgy chips. We've had better. Puddings held promise and there was a nice selection, however, my chocolate mouse had a strange grainy texture to it, possibly it had 'split'? Lastly, my biggest bugbear, a service charge....?? 12 percent added onto the bill.... quite some cheek really. Maybe you could get away with this in a high end restaurant, but not on this occasion. I'd give the whole experience 5/10.

A few years ago we had a disappointing meal here, and I have stayed away. Todays lunch was a grand return to form. The service was excellent, as was the fish and chips, as well as sausage sandwich. Only minor quibble was the Chilean red, which was a touch tannic ( One of our diners is expert in Chilean reds)

The Angel Inn is a lovely country pub, with welcoming staff and a delightful courtyard, which is perfect for sunny summer days. The menu makes good use of seasonal produce and there is also a specials board. We opted for starters and then the gluten free fish and chips. These were delicious - and sensibly come in two sizes, large and small. We found that the smaller portion was plenty! There is a good wine list too. A great pub, which we will definitely revisit in the near future.

Visited whilst staying in Petworth for FoS. Booked a table but perhaps need not have bothered as although busy there were empty tables. Very well looked after by the staff and the meal and beer were excellent.

Visited with a party of four, two of which are vegans, prior to a Petworth fringe show. We were very disappointed that there were no vegan dishes featured on the menu, meaning a salad to start and risotto (without the cheese) for main. Any chef worth their salt should be able to place 2 or 3 tasty vegan dishes on a menu without increasing kitchen food stocks whatsoever. We understood from staff that the chef is reluctant to feature vegan dishes as many many people have made similar comments before us. This means that we will definitely not be returning, even though we live locally, until the menu changes. Shame really because the location is great and the staff very friendly.

We took time out from visiting Petworth House to eat lunch here. To get to the Angel, go out of the House's town entrance, walk forward to the entry to the church grounds and turn right down Lombard Street. At the bottom end of the square, turn left onto New Street and walk up the hill to the Angel.

Popped in for lunch. Food was above average for a pub/gastro pub, our waitress was lovely, the real ale was a little too cold for my liking but in perfect condition, and the rhubarb trifle to finish was a real delight. I loved the mix of bar drinkers and diners which creates a great ambience. And dog friendly too!

Tried the Angel again with friends for Sunday lunch. Over-elaborate menu writing: "Roast Goodwood Organic strip loin of beef " (but only two slices), roast chicken (with Yorkshire pudding?); perfectly adequate. Chocolate mousse and affogato were good. Good Chilean red. Will try other food including fish on next visit.

Two of us for lunch midweek earlier in May, and we ordered squid and a large fish and chips, and crabcakes and a small fish and chips with beers. Table seating and service were swift and efficient, the food was very good and exceeded my expectations. At lunchtime it felt a little more pub than restaurant but would not stop me from returning. Shall try an evening shortly.

What a great restaurant with a sheltered walled garden! Loved the food. We shared starters and rated combined taste of ingredients, portions and gluten-free friendly options. I liked the service, the staff were busy but always helpful, and I would go back in a jiffy if I didn’t live so far away. Thank you Angel!

We were in Petworth on Sunday to have a look around, and The Angel Inn was recommended to us for lunch. What an amazing place to eat! We hadn’t booked, and the place was fully booked, but the staff found as a table booked for 3pm, and offered it to us if we could be finished by 2:45 - which worked perfectly.

The staff and beverages were great but we will not be able to go back due to the fumes and smoke from the open fire. The evening was marred by this and left us coughing and hoarse. It is an easy thing to fix you just need to get the draught sorted on the chimney so that it doesn’t all come into the room

We were made to feel unwelcome from the beginning and endured regular comments from staff, including management, that made us feel like a total inconvenience. Would never stay or eat here again. Have heard that management or ownership has changed recently and it shows- staff seem to hate their jobs and have no time for customers at all. A real disappointment.

Visited petworth today and after a service we decided to give the angel inn a second chance after a previous bad experience. Firstly we were greeted by a man in a full suit and made out it was a hardship to seat us (even though the whole pub was empty!) once we had ordered our drinks they were brought over by the waitress (older lady with grey hair and glasses) she handed each drink with her hand over the glasses her fingers touching all around the top of the glasses we were expected to drink. Food was poor with a poor selection. No fires lit or any atmosphere. Will not be giving the angel any more chances such a shame could be a lively pub like it once was!!

The meal was very good, we met with friends. Service very pleasant and friendly but it was very chilly in there. We saw 2 fireplaces neither were lit and don't think there was any other heating. Made the experience a bit lacking, please take heed, we need heating, hopefully fires , particularly at this time of the year!
