The Angel at Burford in West Oxfordshire

Went for Lunch with Family for Mother’s Day. Food: Sirloin Steak, Sunday Pork Roast, Burger and Spaghetti for kids -> all were delicious. Price is reasonable for the Food and Portion size. Service charge included!

Location was good, the bar staff were lovely and had excellent service. We had cheesy garlic flatbread to start which was delicious. The main couldn’t be more disappointing! I had fish and chips - the chips were still frozen and the fish batter was soggy. My partner had a burger and it was RAW! It had such good reviews so we were very disappointed but definitely wouldn’t go back or recommend. Only reason it’s 2 stars and not 0 or 1 is because the bar staff were so welcoming.

Food and service were excellent. We had a great table in the window. Our dog Marvin was made very welcome and even given a little bowl of treats.

Lovely setting in Burford, had high expectations, staff were very attentive and welcoming, however the food turned out to be rather underwhelming. The fish pie was ok but nothing special, the Salmon was over cooked, the potato cake quite flowery. We ordered 2 sides at £5 each, they came in small ramekins. The HAND CUT chips turned out to be frozen Chunky chips … I did point this out to the waitress but nothing was done or acknowledged by management, the veg nothing special. The puddings were good and generous. When then bill came it was over £360 because they added2 extra wines, the frozen chips, and a £40 service charge. We had it corrected (which was done without checks, almost like they expected it) and left a cash tip for the staff, the owner/manger kept away. Will not rush back, overpriced and under performed.

Booked for Sunday Lunch and normally avoid traditional roast but the Angel was the exception. Excellent flavours, particularly the vegetables. A delicious pudding and friendly service means that we will definitely return and would recommend.

Lovely old pub in the high street close to free parking. We had a table for 4 for mother's day and all of us really enjoyed a great atmosphere and delicious Sunday roast and dessert at a reasonable price. Portions were excellent and the service very friendly and attentive despite being really busy! Highly recommended.

Called in on a rainy day for a meal and was sat in a beautiful window seat near the fire. Ordered some local beers and a wine the enjoyed some great pork on mash as well as a salmon dish that were both beautiful - the staff were friendly with a good lunch time buzz in the place. Bill was paid and we left then upon reflection it seemed expensive £70 for 2 standard meals at £21 each and 2 basic drinks - then i assumed a service charge had been applied based on other reviews - not communicated - this practice should be illegal!!! Great lunch all the same

Burford is a regular weekend away for us. We have to say this was an outstanding place to stay and eat. Food is excellent, choice is very good and it’s really great value. Team Are friendly and it’s clearly a well run hotel. The hotel room was really good too and brilliant value compared to other excellent hotels in Burford. A great choice for food and even better if you get the chance to stay and enjoy some of the deals they have. Well done and thanks

Enjoyable pub lunch, with good food, service and ambience. Quite a small space so might struggle with pram or pushchair.

Dinner for four on Saturday, arrived early, no problem, welcomed and a drink or two and then great food served with a smile. Lovely evening. Pork Belly special was very good!

Went for a leisurely wander around Burford, stopping here for an afternoon drink. Great service, we all enjoyed the atmosphere and my gin was really delicious. It was pretty busy for after lunch but it’s such a quaint place to visit. The food looked and smelled amazing, wish we hadn’t had such a big breakfast, next time ! Nice place.

Friendly and attentive staff and good food. However, the place was completely lacking in atmosphere which was immediately felt as we walked through the door. Turn the music up to more than a slight whisper and light some candles please! It felt very awkward sat so close to another three couples knowing we could all hear each others' conversations so easily. The food tasted good but it's very expensive for such small portion sizes. I'm not sure we will return to be honest.

Cute, little and crammed Pub seating for eating. Another Pub with luxury dining attempt. Average Food at above average prices. £40.00 per person average without alcohol and a shared starter. A steak at £32.00 !? A tourist rip off of course. Service did not match the price structure.

Definitely wander off Burford’s main road for this one. The town itself is a hidden gem in the Cotswolds, but this is more than a pub - The Angel is a great local culinary experience. Very special gourmet twists on classic dishes are on offer, as well as this being the only pub we found in Burford that serves local ales. The service is attentive and the food - from starters to desserts - is gorgeous. Not to mention the intimate setting and decor, not one to miss!

Every time we visit The Angel the food, service, ambience is absolutely first class cannot fault anything or anyone it’s just so so good !!

Scott our server and Molly behind the bar, gave a very warm welcome on arrival (helped by the roaring fire). The atmosphere was calm and our order was taken and food delivered a short while later. Beautiful presentation and our pan fried chicken with a red wine and truffle jus was scrumptious. Well recommended. A delightful pub off the main road. A hidden gem.

The Fish & Chips were truly exceptional, undoubtedly the best I've ever experienced. The Tartare Sauce was remarkably exquisite, complementing the delightful mushy peas perfectly. The thick-cut chips were generously portioned and neatly arranged, serving as a base for the crispy, battered cod that was both moist and succulent, offering a burst of delicious flavour. We began our meal with the Celeriac soup, which was equally delicious and bursting with rich flavour. The service completed the excellent dining experience, with staff members who were professional, polite, and courteous. Overall, the whole experience was perfection personified.

Liked the menu, difficult to make a choice, will have to go back. Have been visiting Burford for nigh on 40years, I think this was my first visit to the Angel, will definitely be back, and try the other menu items.

We came on a busy Sunday, and they were very good allowing us a table for a quick meal as they were very booked up. However, the vegetarian pasta main we had not only tasted rather bland, but was the size of a starter. It worked out about £3 per ravioli! As we had agreed to only stay for one course, and given our experience with the main, we left it at that. The service was good, although as we weren't asked how we found our food, we didn't say. The fish and chips looked to be a much more substantial plate, as maybe are other mains. We won't be returning.

It’s a Cotswolds Pub. Stone flag floors, wood burner fireplace, cosy atmosphere and good ales and food. Not complaining!

We had lovely relaxed couple of hours at The Angel. We only ordered mains from the menu, but all three dishes were delicious. Would recommend.

Not been before but decided to come here from recommendations from another pub in town. I ate lunch on a miserable Sunday afternoon and was greeted by Scott the bar manager who was an absolute pleasure to meet. As I was dining alone I was seated by their log fire which was delightful as it was a cold day. Food was exceptional which I’ve heard was cooked by Rhys the head chef. I will recommend and return next time I’m in Burford.

What a fabulous find The Angel pub was. The food was superb quality and therefore very tasty with a 'Specials board'. Great selection of wine.

Fantastic fish & chips and a great pint of Guinness. Located just off the main high street in Burford this pub is a great find, cosy fire, delicious food, superb service and a relaxed atmosphere. I’d recommend booking as it gets busy!

DON’T GO HERE!! This was the most appalling meal I have had in years. It took an hour for our main course to arrive, after ‘nibbles’ of whitebait (sardines) and garlic focaccia which was like Co-op sourdough. We were told the pasta, which came in a puddle of water, was holding everything up ‘because it was cooked from fresh’. Rubbish. None of the food had enough salt. And the worst thing: the sight of the chef laughing. This is my first restaurant review on Google.

An ok pub/restaurant. We stayed for one night. Dinner was quite ok, if not astounding. I ordered the Duck rillette starter and we both had the Pork belly main. They were well cooked if uninspiring. Quality of ingredients was good. The crumble was excellent, but cheese board let down by soft artisan crackers. One of the staff was very friendly, but the other was very standoffish - although service was always prompt. It was cold in the main bar. Breakfast was a disappointment, taking 30 minutes to arrive and the order was wrong and toast, forgotten. We think it had been stood ready for some time waiting to be served. Room was ok with comfy bed but not comfy pillows. All in all a bit of a mixed place but we wouldn't stay again.

A gem in Burford. Off the main high street - so less tourists ! Great choice of menu with specials board. The food was excellent.

We were staying at The Bay Tree Hotel in Burford and were not particularly blown away by the food, so went exploring to find somewhere to have dinner. We popped in at lunchtime for a drink and booked in for that night. Lovely old building with classic Cotswold charm. We got a table near a roaring open fire which was a blessing due to the atrocious weather. Staff were nice, service was good and the food was really good. Nothing fancy, but what they did was done well and was all piping hot. We enjoyed it so much that we didn't bother to find anywhere else and went back another 2 nights. Only a small place, so booking is probably advisable. If you are in Burford, 100% worth a look.

Unfortunately there is more wrong with the food here, than right. It is served lukewarm and is very expensive for what is served. The staff couldn't even be bothered to light the tea lights on our tables. Don't waste fifty quid on what would be "2 meals for £20" anywhere else.

We had visited the angel a year ago and had a Sunday lunch which totally smashed it out the park... Greens, awesome roast potatoes the works. Fast forward to this recent visit and we could not believe how much has changed. We ordered roast chicken and got an over cooked tough 1/2 chicken that was almost impossible to eat. Next up the roast potatoes seemed to be just large rock hard lumps cooked in vegetable oil. Finally the veg. We were given a bowl of chopped up carrot, sweed and something else, beetroot perhaps? No greens, no cauliflower; a very poorly put together Sunday roast and certainly not worth the £23 per roast we paid. It was very overpriced... The service was timely, and the waiting staff polite. But it's the food which has massively let the Angel down and sadly we won't return.

My husband and I went to the Angel for Saturday lunch whilst on a visit to Burford. Walking in we were greeted by a cozy log fire which was very welcome as it was a chilly day. We both had the hake on a bed of creamed leeks and baby roasted potatoes, it was absolutely delicious. We shared a dessert of sticky toffee pudding with caramel ice cream, it came with plenty of toffee sauce and again was absolutely delicious. We have eaten here several times and never been disappointed and we will most certainly return.

Cozy and welcoming, excellent food, nice wine, nothing to complain about really enjoyed.

Liked the look of the menu after visiting for a drink so went back for a meal. Food and service was very good, though nothing standout or exceptional. nothing wrong in that, really enjoyed the food. Drinks were ok [pint local ale/glass Sauvingnon Blanc] if a little pricey for the choice. Only downer was service charge [12.5%] was applied to the bill and presented to us, which included a premium for the drinks. Not sure why a pub feels the need to impose this to the bill - if the food, service, etc. is good, then a service charge would be added by the customer - and this certainly should not include a premium to the drinks. Dogs are inevitably welcome, but during our visit, the one in there was almost invisible. Unfortunately, we'll put this down to experience and not be back.

The menu choice was nice and varied and the presentation of the dishes was good. Nice to have linen napkins too. The dining area is not too big which makes for a cosy ambience.

This was a superb choice for two friends who hadn't met up for a while. Lovely space to enjoy a warm (there's a log fire) welcome, good service and great food. The cheese soufflé was sublime, and the warm winter salad very tasty. Did I mention the crumble... oh boy... we will be back. Thank you.

Unfortunately one of the meals came out cold. The meal was reheated but by the time that happened others had eaten their meal. Service charge was automatically applied which was disappointing and as a minimum should have been waived. Other than that we had a nice time and felt very comfortable, relaxed and cosy.

Lovely pub, we visited in the summer and it was lovely sat in the garden, this time for a winter visit it was cosy inside with the log burner lit and staff very friendly and helpful.

Stayed for 1 night on a half-board basis. Absolutely fantastic - would highly recommend. Food- my partner and I had a three course dinner in the evening. All courses were excellent and the bar had a lovely cosy atmosphere. Likewise the breakfast in the morning...

Not a great meal. Roast potatoes were pale and tasteless and the vegetables were undercooked all were root vegetables and unappetising. The worst part was the meat that was almost raw, chewy and very difficult to cut. Everyone was disappointed which was such a shame....

I was encouraged to visit the angel by reading the reviews online, and I found them to be very accurate so that the whole event is a very pleasant experience. It was also very handy to have a free public car park, so close by in a very busy town.

Great food and great service in what appears from the outside to be a modest establishment. Our second time of going and once again, did not disappoint. Definitely recommended.
