The Ancient Raj in Canterbury

We enjoyed a tasty takeaway from the Ancient Raj, delicious flavours and accompaniments. The white fish curry is highly recommended!

We have been eating regularly at the Raj for nearly ten years. In that time we have always experienced warm, friendly service & excellent food. Never once have we been let down on either. Our visits have been sporadic during 2020 due to the COVID lockdowns, so for the first time this year, we have ordered from their take-away menu. On both occasions we have used this service, the food has been of the same high standard. We consider this our favourite restaurant by far & look forward to resuming our regular meals once the crisis is over.

We're regulars and dine at the Ancient Raj for all our special occasions. We had another superb meal at the end of October and we'll be back! It's really difficult choosing between all our favourites, all the food is amazing and the service is fantastic too. Everyone is so friendly. See you again soon

Ordered takeaway for delivery at 7pm. Arrived at 6.55pm with polite driver. Food was fantastic and very flavoursome. The chicken chattinand was superb. Cannot fault any of the dishes we had. Thank you Ancient Raj !!

We ordered a takeaway online yesterday and decided to collect it. It was ready absolutely on time. Everything was there, The service was excellent and very pleasant and, stepping inside the restaurant briefly, the COVID-19 precautions looked good. The food was really delicious. Piping hot and very tasty. We strongly recommend the Ancient Raj.

Enjoyed meal here with family. Service was excellent and attentive. Staff very friendly. Food was delicious. One of the best Indian restaurants we've dined in. Parked in car park by restaurant, where they have some spaces just for their diners. Need to obtain a parking ticket to display from the restaurant to avoid a fine though. Would definitely return here if visiting again.

Had a meal here tonight for the first time. One of the best Indians i’ve ever had! The covid measures were fantastic and although it was busy, we didn’t have to wait too long. The naan bread in particular was delicious. Definitely will be going back & was very reasonably priced. The sauces with the poppadoms were unlike what I normally would expect with poppadoms but wow they were yum!

Phoned on Sunday to book a table for that evening and left a message. They called me back and were happy to book me in. The food was good. The service was great and prices are reasonable.

Another Trip Adviser recommendation from our friends and we were not disappointed. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the food was plentiful and delicious. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends and family.

La comida llegó de acuerdo con lo que nos dijeron. Comí naga de cordero y lo disfruté, el cordero estaba tierno y el plato sabroso, mi hija, sin embargo, tenía un karai que era suave y aguado. una pena que 2 platos fueran tan diferentes. El arroz estaba bien al igual que el pan naan.

Excellent menu and the food that came was excellent. really helpful friendly staff assisting with a gluten free request for one of us. One of the best indian meals I've had since I came back from India !!

Very impressed. We ordered from the vegan menu and everything was delicious. It was great to eat an Idian Takeaway safe in the knowlege it was all meat and dairy free. The mains were all slightly on the milder side, but that didn't bother us because the flavours were all great. The Vegan Dakeshwari was particularly lovely. Delivery was faster than predicted.

Good quality tablecloths & napkins, excellent service and first rate food. Definitely worth a visit.

I’m from Leicester having been spoilt with good curry houses to choose. This was better. Great atmosphere, really accommodating staff. So pleased we came here.

We are londoners and curry lovers, nd went to ancient raj after reading reviews on here. Big disappointment as the paneer curry we had tasted like chef just threw in pannee and canned tomatoe together, absolutely no curry flavour. The chettinadu chicken tasted like a kurma, only tasted strong coconut flavour , nothing else. Biriyani was too oily. If you are after authentic Indian, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE.

Been here a 3 times for the Sunday buffet and it’s quite honestly the best buffet I have ever been to. The buffet includes starters such as popadoms, bhajis, tandoori chicken, I was also impressed with the selection of curries available. They were all restaurant standard and there were plenty of vegetarian options (Bombay potatoes, chana masala, vegetable curry). As a fan of spice I was very pleased to see a hot jalfrezi, usually these curries are medium in spice but this one was very hot! I would definitely recommend this restaurant and can’t wait to go back!

Bought my dad a voucher from Groupon for a dine in; 2 course meal for 4 people, value of £46. My dad called asking to use this voucher for a delivery even to a lesser value due to the fact that we wasn't able to dine in due to lockdown restrictions. The Ancient Raj said that a manager would call him back, but this never happened so my dad called again (a few times) they asked him for the code from the voucher, and that a manager would look at the value and call him back to take an order. They cashed our voucher in during lockdown!!!!! Never called, stole our money and gave us nothing for the £46. I've contacted Groupon & the Ancient Raj numerous times to try and sort this out. Ancient Raj will not give us any food or a refund because the manager is never there and the staff are not allowed to do anything?? Groupon need the vendor to confirm a refund and won't help without this. I'm absolutely disgusted with all these people. You are thieves and how dare you! Especially during such hard times. Bad karma!

There’s some bad reviews on here about this place but we’ve been here plenty of times. The food is great. Never had a bad meal. They also have great wine selections. It can get really busy so I’d advise to book. I think this shows it’s a good place so the bad reviews are not warranted

most reviews are written by people by a non Indian subcontinent background sorry guys you don’t know what you’re really eating!! I’m of a Pakistani ground and definitely know about cuisine from this part of the world.The meal I had at this restaurant was tasteless, bland, boring, lacked spice and kick. There seemed some obsession with coconut and very sweet sauces going on!! No idea what that’s all about!! The lamb meat I ordered was tough and chewy and was probably mutton!!If this restaurant had opened in say Bradford, Birmingham or Manchester they wouldn’t last 5 minutes. Avoid if I was you.

What a lovely place and what a superb curry. The dishes were superb - deliciously tasty and great value. There was live music whilst we ate and super service from the whole staff team. Well done and thank you.

I looked Indian restaurants up and this one was one of them. The old building and decor of the restaurant appealed to us and we were not disappointed! Lovely welcome (we had not booked a table). Great service along with fantastic food. I like a creamy curry and they were willing to make it madras spicy strength (which I know some restaurants frown at) absolutely delicious as well as their garlic naans. What service, the waiter even took the time to run after us with my hat that I left in the restaurant, thank you

When I was living in Canterbury this was my absolute go-to Indian restaurant. The food is just delicious, the atmosphere fantastic, and the value pretty decent. The last time I visited I went for the Goan lamb shank and cannot recommend it highly enough - it's made me afraid to order anything else in case it doesn't live up to it! The service was very good and the manager made us feel very comfortable and checked up on us regularly.The only downside I can think of is that it can get very busy, particularly on a Saturday night, but that's clearly evidence of the restaurant's success and popularity. Can't wait to go back.

We arrived on the off-chance that we might be able to have a table early on a Saturday evening. We were accommodated despite the restaurant being fully booked. The food was delicious and plentiful. Is this really the best Indian restaurant in Canterbury (as testified by TA). Every dish was sickly sweet, the lamb chewy, chicken tough, and nan a cold leathery texture. Food had no discernible likeness to Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani or any other South Asian cuisine. I can’t begin to speculate how many time the chicken in the Main dish had been re-heated. Appalling. People of Kent, please demand better.

We ate here on the 07/02/20, it is 7 mins. walk from the hotel Agnes. Good service, good food and large portions. The lamb was tender in my madras and my wife enjoyed her chicken madras. if in Canterbury and you fancy a curry this is the place to eat. Well done the chef!!!

A long tradition at the Ancient Raj is the Sunday buffet. Always enjoyable. A good range to choose from with something for everyone. Bring a good appetite. The best bit is the small bill.

Ate here on Saturday evening with friends, good food, good service and great company, definately worth a visit but book beforehand to avoid being turned away as it does get busy :-)

A very pleasent experience with good food. The staff were very helpful and made a good impression serving us. My wife left a scarf behind by mistake and one of the members of staff went out of their way to phone us and promptly had the scarf returned. Thanks. The car parking on site is a little limited and a pass is required from the staff. Remember to display the given permit in your car windscreen. All in all, a very good experience. Will return.

We have moved to Canterbury from Tunbridge Wells and have finally tried all the Indian restaurants in Canterbury and can confirm this is the best one in the area, and here is why.

A bit disappointing. Table very crowded. Restaurant was VERY busy so service not up to scratch. Had to vacate table for second sitting.

I've been to the Ancient Raj with my family about half a dozen times over the years, mainly because my mother likes the old building and the atmosphere :)

Went here tonight for a curry with all the trimmings and it was just exquisite, probably the nicest Indian we’ve had. Lovely atmosphere, lovely attentive staff, and an extensive menu with lots of choice. Highly recommend. The only thing I would say is the waiting time was so-so, but the quality of the food made it worth the wait.

I was on a two day stop over in The UK, whilst getting a car serviced and through its MOT, (French resident, English plated car) and had promised myself a curry on, at least, one of the evenings.

We decided on a curry for our anniversary meal while staying in Canterbury and after reading reviews plumped for The Ancient Raj. We weren't dissapointed, food and service were excellent. would definitely use again if we are in Canterbury.

This i s a fab restaurant and the food is amazing and only short walk from the cathedral. There is live music and it was a guitarist and it was excellent experience and when we visit our we will virus again

Visited this place with colleagues - generally the food tastes good and the prices were very reasonable. They like to use a lot of onions and some dishes weren't very accurate (they tasted like generic curry). That being said, I've definitely eaten a lot worse and the service was great. I've only given 4* and not 5* because I've had better balti's and even though I was satisfied with my dish, it was nothing to sing and dance about.

Working in Canterbury. Decided to try this out. Great atmosphere and settings. Its an old listed building. So looks great. Then the food. This was very good. Exactly what I would expect from a top Indian Restaurant. Worth a visit.

Reading the reviews of all the Indians in Canterbury it seems to be pot luck if you have a good meal or a rubbish one.

Had a take away from here with my girlfriend Friday night. Worst curry I have ever had, watery and bland. Would literally fall of the fork like water. Absolutely no flavour, a shameful excuse for a curry. Reasonably priced but I can see why. AWFUL. Locals seem to rate this place and it’s often one of the first names people think of in Canterbury when you think of an Indian and I’m gobsmacked as to how.

Went to celebrate our friends birthday and it was our first visit. We were all impressed. The menu was extensive, the food was served promptly and was of a high standard. Most of the staff were great although our First waiter did not seem t9 understand our order and was wearing a scraggy worn out waistcoat.our other waiter was great, polite, funny and sporting a great bouffant hairdo. We very much enjoyed our visit and will definitely return. The prices and food are good. The only negatives? The carpets were a bit grubby and threadbare and some of the customers were swearing very loudly but that is not the fault of the restaurant. fantastic

I was picking my son up from Canterbury West and as this was close by, decided to order a takeaway. A takeaway for three was around £55, reasonable value and the building is stunning, absolutely beautiful. That sadly is all I can say that is positive.

We had a great night here celebrating my birthday. We have always had a fantastic experience and last weeks evening did not disappoint. It was a shame there was no live entertainment.

Returning to Canterbury after some years, and on the basis of seemingly great reviews, we booked as a family for an early Saturday night dinner. The person taking the booking was very polite and personable and we looked forward to it.

My husband and I came to this fabulous restaurant to celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary, while staying in Canterbury, we just wished we lived closer, the atmosphere of this beautiful building is relaxing, staff welcoming and friendly, the food is amazing, well presented and tasty, we enjoyed such a lovely evening, so thank you all.

Stopped by on the off chance they May have a table available. Luckily they did but this is s busy restaurant so I recommend calling ahead.

We went here twice while staying in Canterbury. The first time was a Friday night and we only got in because it was fairly late, reservations would be a good idea on the weekend. The first time we had several appetizers and two entrees plus rice which was too much. The second time we had more appetizers and shared the tandoori chicken since it is half of a chicken and plenty after appetizers. The papadum is tasty and comes with 4 sauces. We really liked the raita as it’s green with mint but different from what we get in the US. Once we had the king prawn appetizer and the tandoori prawns which were good but not great. The veg samosas were very good, the mixed appetizer tasty but the lamb chop was tough and not to our liking. The tandoori chicken is delicious. Most of the people eating around us were having curry or dishes with sauce and completely finishing them. There is a limited wine list but good choices and reasonable prices. There are multiple beer options which goes well with Indian food. The garlic nan is very good with the raita.

We had a meal at the Ancient Raj on 24th July. We were staying in Canterbury for just two nights and this our choice for our first night. We didn't book and as there were just two of us and we went early, they were able to fit us in. People were queueing at the door later to get a table which is no doubt a testimony to their food, which was absolutely gorgeous, with really fresh flavours. The service was a little slow, but it didn't affect our enjoyment of the evening and if I was visiting Canterbury again I would definitely be happy to eat here again.

Fabulous meal as always. Great service, great food and even had entertainment from a guitar player. Great choice for vegetarians and lovely venue. Would recommend.

If you are looking for the very best Indian Cuisine then The Ancient Raj in North Lane will fulfil all your expectations. Beautiful interior to be expected in a Listed Building that creates the most amazing ambience to enjoy the very many delights on the menu and wine list. As a Celiac I have to be very careful when dining out but here the Management and Staff are fully conversant with gluten free and allergies and are introducing gluten free Cobra Premium Beer to the drinks menu, it cannot get any better. In a nutshell, simply amazing, and congratulations to all the Management and Staff for making dining here an unforgettable experience.

My husband and I met as students in Canterbury in 2004. For the next 3 years, we had many date nights and take aways in The Ancient Raj and loved it there. We’ve just celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary and stayed back in Canterbury for the weekend with our young children. Staying in an Air B&B;, we decided to get a take away after putting the kids to bed. Where else would we order from? Huge mistake!! It was quite honestly the worst food I’ve ever paid for. Curries were watery and had no flavour to them. Rice was also bland and tasteless. Onion bhajis were so greasy and the oil on them tasted old. We threw most of it in the bin. Hugely disappointing!!!!

People told me this was great and it was perfectly adequate but there are much better to be had. Everything we had was bland except the chilli naan. Even the poppodum accompaniments had nothing spicy to offer. Tandoori mixed grill was pretty measly and meat was over cooked, dry chicken leg and kebab. 5 of us ate and all had different as well as some sides, but I do expect a better meat content than a drumstick and some chunks of meat with a tiny sheep kebab,and would like some fried onions on an £12 mixed grill.

The Ancient Raj used to be really good but we had a take away this week and were really disappointed. Having had tasty food previously, we ignored the warning signals on the website that said about negative comments recently and them not being a true reflection, but we should have listened to our doubts!

Went to the Ancient Raj for a graduation celebration with the family. The food was good, no complaints. Lots of vegan options and a well labelled vegan menu which also showed which items could be made vegan on request. The only thing that let it down was that we were given a deadline on the table so felt more rushed than we normally would, but understand that they had other guests arriving (and admittedly we arrived late for our booking as well).

I took my husband to the Ancient Raj for his birthday treat inviting several surprise friends along to make the evening fun.

I had a very nice seafood curry and was too full unfortunately to finish it all. All the people I ate with also enjoyed their meal. I felt the Madras would have been too hot for myself, but each too whatever heat suit you. Very nice overall.

We went there last night. The onion barjis tasted like cardboard and must have been reheated. The naan bread was soggy and like rubber. Only my curry was good. So all in all not a place to recommend.

The Raj is one of my favourite Curry Houses in South East Kent. I have dined here many times and have never had a bad experience of any kind whether it be with regards the food or service. Both are very good.

Went here recently with my partner after reading the reviews and having seen it busy from the outside. Sadly it was not authentic and was extremely sweet. I ordered a medium spiced curry which was bland and mild. The tardka dal and saag paaner where very sweet in particular and had little flavour. I assume it is designed for English tastes which I find disappointing as when you go for an Indian you expect traditional and unique Indian flavours which you couldn’t otherwise cook at home. The dal might as well have been baby food.

We have very much enjoyed the Ancient Raj in the past, but our meals on Saturday evening were quite disappointing.

What has happened to this restaurant? It used to be the most consistent Indian in town but the last few meals here have been below average. On this occasion, it wasn’t only the food, but the service as well that was below par. A quiet Tuesday night, with plenty of empty tables .....no excuse for food taking almost an hour to arrive. When it did, the order was wrong. No apology forthcoming but we accepted it anyway as didn’t want to wait any longer! Onion Bhajis were soggy, Tarka Daal tasted as if it had sugar in it, such was the sweetness of the dish. Chicken Tikka was good, but not served on the sizzling plate, just put on the plate. Second chicken dish (which was the one delivered instead of the dish actually ordered) .... couldn’t actually work out what it was. Virtually a whole soggy onion and over cooked peppers in a fairly insipid curry sauce with a few bits of chicken. It looked like it had been left by previous diners and scraped into a clean dish! All in all a very poor meal and we will try elsewhere next time I’m afraid

We have eaten at The Ancient Raj on many (many) occasions both in the restaurant and take away/delivery. The food is always top notch, the service is very friendly and welcoming. A real gem!

Even though fully booked, the lovely welcoming staff could not be anymore accommodating by finding my husband and I a table . Stunning food in a quaint setting. Highly recommend for anyone staying in Canterbury. The vegetarian Dhansak is to die for !!!

We quite often use the Ancient Raj for our team nights out from work - it's location is handy for all of us being near to car parks and a station. The food is well made and everyone's varied tastes are catered for - we've never had any complaints about any of the dishes and the staff are always attentive and keep the drinks topped up nicely. Recommended.

I went to the Ancient Raj with my husband this evening. As always, we had a wonderful time. There is always such a friendly, warm and welcoming environment and the food is always delicious. In my opinion, easily the best Indian restaurant in the area. Thank you for a lovely evening!

Food has no flavour and glad this is not my local. It was very poor and the dishes are small and look like, well I can’t describe. Tasteless and had a bad tummy within an hour of eating

Atmosphere was nice, food good (with large portions) and service was excellent. As other reviewers have stated, it doesn't look much from the outside but venture in and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

We’ve been staying in Canterbury for a week’s break and had passed this place on our walk into the city as it’s nearby to our AirBnB rental. During the daytime, when it’s shut and the blinds are closed, it looks like a run down and tatty restaurant. There isn’t even a menu in the window. However, once open it transforms into a warm and inviting curry house.
