Happened upon The Anchor whilst on a day visit to Hastings. Lovely pub that we would visit again. Plenty of shady seating out front and a very reasonably priced menu. The food was fresh, generous and delicious ( we had the sea bream) and the beer was good. Friendly staff and good service. These days you can often feel underwhelmed by overpriced, mediocre food in pubs but this was just the opposite.

I usually have a great time here as I am local and been many many times over the years. and food is also usually great. Food wise the lamb was over cooked and potatoes under cooked as well as the carrots. The nut roast and chicken was excellent - so we were not going to say anything about this. The staff were great. But the owner was very rude and argumentative when at the time I was speaking to a member of staff - I had not been advised when booking that if someone from our table does not arrive they will keep the deposit - so I was Questioning this and stating that I felt it was a little naughty that I was not told when booking. That was all my tone was calm I was not rude. And the staff member said it is the policy - I was about to say well ok then the owner from the pub who was behind the bar staring having a go about how I should know this and it’s the norm and everyone does this and I should of known this. and they don’t need to tell anybody as it’s Normal everywhere you go, her tone was very aggressive and there was absolutely no need for such rudeness. It was also I felt undermining the lovley staff who was already explaining their policy. The rudeness and aggressive tone from the owner was totally not called for and everyone in the pub could hear this as it was shouted at me from behind the bar to where I was sitting at table at back of the bar. Due to this rudeness and the food being not as good as it has always been. I will not be coming back. That sort of experience is not what you want when having a family Easter dinner especially when loved ones who have passed could not be present. You should not be taking your stress out on your local customers. And it’s a shame as all the staff were absolutely lovely. The owner showed them up and let them down.

We have spent an evening in the Anchor previously having enjoyed a great evening We visited again Sat.4th and enjoyed a lovely lunch in a cosy atmosphere.Although a slight confusion with food order we don’t make a fuss about mistakes like that. The staff remedied this straight away and the liver and bacon was worth the wait! I visited the pub with my mother today and we asked to sit at one of the empty tables in the window. The waitress that was there told us it’s reserved for locals to which I replied we were locals. She then said I meant the regulars, I said as there is no one there and we won’t be long could we please just have a quick bite to eat. She was so rude to me and told me “don’t start crying about it and go somewhere else” She was so rude and her attitude was disgusting. I would never go in here again. She then proceeded to have an argument with me saying she doesn’t give a toss if she loses business. Vile girl she was. Will never return and would recommend no one else goes there either. Worse service I’ve received. She said a lot more but I don’t have time to go into it. Horrible girl.

Lovely lager however the tourists pay £5 a pint and the locals £3.40. I took my business elsewhere and paid regular prices so ultimately they lost money from me. We went here recently for Sunday roast. One way system in place which was good as not all pubs doing this or able to. Staff were friendly and helpful but maybe too attentive at the table but can’t complain as some places don’t even bother coming over mid way through ! The toilets were clean and tidy which says a lot about a place and its hygiene. The roast was nice but it wasn’t spectacular but we enjoyed it all the same. The portion sizes were good and the children’s roast dinner was a good size and generous. The only downside to our lunch was that there were a few tables by the bar with retired looking gentlemen shouting to one another and had probably had a good few drinks before we got there. I think one was the owner of the pub or the manager. They were having a laugh but they too loud they were swearing a lot - f words every other sentence. My children kept looking up shocked and we weren’t happy about the atmosphere imposed on us especially as we had spent over £50. Nobody told them to pipe down. So for that reason I won’t be returning. I hope they read this review and realise swearing a turn off for paying customers especially when children are present. I am on the area again maybe stop for a beer...

Being locals, me and my fella always eat in the town on Saturdays and occasionally venture along to the old town for lunch. I hadn't been inside this pub for a couple of years (and even then it was only for a drink on pirate day). We decided to give it a go a couple of days ago, lured in my the tempting menu and open fire. What a brilliant decision! The whole place has had a facelift, with more emphasis on dining. The interior is really cosy and nicely lit, with a really good choice of traditional dishes and puddings. We both had liver and bacon with mash and veggies which was perfectly cooked in delicious onion gravy. The portion sizes were generous, so we didn't have room for dessert, so I shall have to go back to try the homemade bread and butter pudding! We really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, and the service was very friendly and efficient. It was so nice to find somewhere that doesn't over charge for the coffee and hasn't devoted half it's menu to weird cheeses and salad dishes that are all style over substance. Lovely filling gravy covered dinners for a fair price will keep us going back again and again!

Slightly rocky start where no-one had recorded my table booking for 4 that I had made a week earlier. However they dealt with this hitch extremely well and sat us in a little snug in the bar area. We ordered a chicken burger, which was a big piece of chicken on a bap, rather than a patty made with minced chicken. One of us had fish and chips and myself and another had local smoked un-dyed haddock and poached egg with mash, peas and parsley sauce. This is definitely my best restaurant experience in Hastings and really ticked all the boxes for me; warm, friendly efficient staff, nice ambience, generous portions of great quality local produce cooked perfectly and fantastic value. Also when one of us asked to take our leftovers away, they didn’t bat an eyelid and packed it up really well for us. There are so many restaurants now doing cheffy food and not always very well that it is really refreshing to come across a restaurant that serves more traditional dishes, we all loved it and can’t wait to come back here.

I opted for Liver & Bacon with onion gravy, mash and fresh veg. The food was perfectly cooked, well presented and arrived in good time whilst sampling a refreshing pint from the ample selection at the friendly bar. What more can you ask for when arriving in town needing refreshment. It is located not far from the sea front in a bustling pedestrian street quite devoid of road traffic and therefore very pleasant to sit and relax watching the world go by having a leisurely lunch. We had a simple lunch - crab and ham sandwiches on brown bread. The food was tasty and fresh; the accompanying salad delicious. There was also a generous portion of chips. The beer and cider were excellent. The staff - several young women- were pleasant and helpful. We shall certainly return - this time for a proper meal, as the menu is quite extensive.

The faggotts are amazing. Such a treat as I can’t remember the last time I had them. Mac and cheese was a hit and the ribs. We sat outside in the shade and enjoyed watching the world go by. Highly recommended.

We had a fabulous lunch with our 3 children. The Anchor Inn had been recommended to us by the Airbnb we were staying in, and definately lived up to its recommendation. Very child friendly, food was great and the lady on the bar couldnt have made us feel more welcome. Lovely! The hi light of the kids meal was the Icecream ! 3 happy children with blue parrots ! Thankyou

We called in here on the Saturday afternoon of the Mayday weekend and they were very busy , we had drinks which were a large Pinio Grigio and the 5 hop lager i believe it is called which came in at under a tenner and then ordered the Cod and chips off the standard menu and the staff did warn us of a half hour wait which was honest. When the food arrived the Cod smelt of the Sea , it was that fresh , a decent serving of chips and some peas . Topped off with a slice of lemon and Hollandaise sauce it was superb. The atmosphere was good with daytrippers, weekend visitors like us and locals , some of which were attired for the Green Man festivities. This was our second such weekend here and despite it being much colder than last year the Pub maintained a cosy feel.

Ended up in The Anchor as a pit stop sheltering from the rain. Decided to stay for lunch which turned out to be a great choice. Food was really good and great value for money. If you are in Hastings, pop in - you will not be disappointed.

Rotten winters day calls for booking a last minute roastie! First time we’ve been to The Anchor for a while for a roast, it’s had a refreshing facelift inside and out and is looking fresher. Service is always very good in this pub, very attentive, straight over for drinks, we ordered the roast chicken and the beef, the pub started filling up fast! It’s a place I always recommend when asked locally. What I love about The Anchor is the separate serving of gravy and veg, gives a decent serving, albeit I leave the peas, peas and a roast dinner just don’t go, it’s not a real veg in my book Hubby enjoyed his half chicken and I had the beef of which there is plenty. Not the best roast potatoes as they are more like boiled spuds that have been browned, but still tasty, and wouldn’t stop us going back. Much prefer a crispy Maris piper on my plate but the whole dinner makes up for it

Arrived after a long journey and we found this pub on a website that stated it was dog friendly. We sat in a dingy corner by the toilets, asked several time for water for the dog, and it was clear it is not so dog friendly after all.We ordered the chicken burger lunch and it was mediocre at best. Bland food and awful chips.

This cosy Old Town pub with family atmosphere is dog friendly, offers a great service and fantastic deals!Took my family from Germany there every time they visited, and everyone was pleased and impressed. Definitely the best lamb shank Sunday Roast in town! Juicy, flavoursome... just YUMMY!The breakfast for only 4.95 is also second to none and fills you up nicely. I can recommend the veggie breakfast with tasty halloumi. For the little piglets among you (I'm outing myself as one, so don't be shy!), you can get a double up for 7.95. Simply amazing!I conclude with the best bit - the staff! Exceptionally friendly, making all the effort, and providing a great family atmosphere, they won't stop until their customers are satisfied. Also nice for events - sometimes bands are playing, and every now and again they have a mentalist there to entertain customers waiting for their Sunday roast table or their meal to go down. Watch out! He'll read your mind, almost as good as the staff. Highly recommended!Have fun and leave me some Guinness! :)

We regularly visit the old town in Hastings and due to a post on Facebook decided to try the anchor for their breakfast. All I can say is fantastic. Great friendly service and at £4.95 great value for money too. Very impressed indeed. Will certainly be back very soon.

The pub was busy even at 2.30pm for lunch. The waitress was very sweet but seemed to need more training - no menus until we asked, approx 45 minutes wait with no communication - she did apologise when pushed, and had to get own cruet! Food was good when it arrived - fortunately ample servings as we were VERY hungry by then!

We visited the Anchor with our friends and our children, a party of 8. We couldn’t get a table at the pump house which is opposite and excellent by the way. On arrival the staff were nice we hadn’t booked and the pushed two tables together for us. The food was way under par the burgers clearly bought in frozen, soggy chips plus it took ages to arrive. Whitebait starter was ok though. This pub has charm and nice staff but needs to up its game to be in competition with others in the old town.

Visiting Hastings from London and found ourselves at a loose end as it was raining heavily. Happened upon this dog-friendly pub in the Old Town area and the staff were both pleasant and welcoming. Not least to our highly-strung Jack Russell who they quickly won over with a few dog biscuits and lots of fuss! Didn't eat there this time - although the Sunday roasts they were serving to other customers looks (and smelled) delicious! Had a community buzz too - a lot of the locals seemed to know each other - but were still very pleased to see new faces like ours. Definitely recommend.

I stopped by for Sunday lunch. They said "Roast only today", but when I sat down, they added: "but it may be possible to serve you something else". I had lamb shank, which was perfect.
