The 78 in Glasgow City

We dropped by here on a Tuesday for a friend's birthday. There's no table service nor an app, so we all had to join the long queue at the bar to order everything (-1 star). The food menu was Mexican vegetarian so ordered a few items of each. The food arrived at some point, but no cutlery or napkins so we ended up having to ask for those at the bar as well (-1 star). The food itself was thoroughly unimpressive - I've made far better tacos at home (-1 star). A couple of us arrived a little later, including the birthday boy, and they were told they ran out of food and they can't order anything anymore. What kind of place runs out of food?! It was a little before 20:00 so definitely not too late. We ended up sharing some of the food we got with them (-1 star). They did have a great selection of drinks and well-priced beers so +1 star for that. Overall a horrible dining experience, so I'd never eat here again, though might consider it for drinks.

Delicious Mexican food at a good price. Plenty of beers and non alcoholic beers available.

The Vegan brunch is just AMAZING! If I could I would eat it every day! Although I think that it is only available on the weekends.

Cool pub with a vast range of beers on tap and in the fridge. Vegan only food. Prices are very reasonable, specials run at quieter times. Nice, friendly staff, good tunes.

Visited here a few times recently and the vegan mexican is amazing! Everything is well priced and the beer selection is also class!

The mexican food is so so so tasty and it’s great to have authentic vegan Mexican food. Food and drinks were priced reasonably, along with a great selection available. The music was really good and meant the place had a good atmosphere. Staff were great too.

Food was fantastic last time I went here. Heartily recommended.

Went early December and was pretty disappointed to learn they have stopped serving food. It’s a drinks only bar now. :(

I've only been in for drinks recently, so can't comment on food. Service was good and the selection was impressive for such a small place. The number of alcohol-free/low-alcohol beers was really impressive! (5 or 6) Prices for some items were pretty high though.

Very relaxed and causal vibe with many beers and ciders on tap. If you go around lunch time and early afternoon, you'll have no problem getting a seat but in the evening it can get busy. The vegan and veg food is phenomenal! If you're a student, be sure to show your card for a discount too.

Only stopped for drinks after a day out but they had a great selection, at a reasonable price.

There is very difficult to search vegitarian restaurant, lack of parking gacilities

What a shame! It used to be one of the best vegan places in the west end, but the kitchen is now permanently closed.

We went in for food at 1pm on a Saturday as previous reviews said it was good for vegetarians, but the place was empty and the kitchen is now permanently closed.

Class wee place. Cost vibes and good selection of drinks. Staff were sound too. Would recommend 100%

Absolutely shocking Food was cold, staff - rude and certainly was worst vegan food I’ve had in 8 years and I’ve had a lot of bad vegan food 😭

As a bonafide carnivore I was sceptical of an entirely vegan menu but I was blown away by the quality in flavour I experienced. Cauliflower wings were incredible. The texture was hearty and rich and the ranch sauce had tang and zing. Loaded fries were huge and had all the salt and spice you could hope for. I don’t think I’m converted but it’s now a great option if I want to be healthier or impress my vegan friends and family. A really homely vibe and one to try if you are looking for a different culinary experience from the norm

Nice place, decent vegan menu, nice staff. Only complaint was that food took a long time to arrive and most of it (full breakfast) was cold by the time I got it.

First time I've been to a vegan restaurant, the food was delicious and the service was very friendly and speedy. The Padron peppers and cauliflower wings were amazing and the cheeseburger was super tasty. I'd highly recommend a visit to The 78 if you're looking for a vegan or vegetarian alternative.

So it’s my birthday and I’m looking for a family birthday meal for 5 people, 2 of whom are vegan and 2 of whom are vegetarian. Unfortunately I chose The 78. Where do I start? If you are looking for a bar job where you get paid for sitting chatting to your fellow staff members and don’t need to attend to/interact with the customers then this place is for you. I can only apologise for repeatedly interrupting the staff to ask for some service during our meal. How rude of me. We had to ask if it was table service or not as no one came near us after we were seated to take a drink or food order. The place was very quiet - no surprise in retrospect. After our food, again no staff could bear to leave their conversations and venture near us. Don’t worry guys, we’ll leave our seats again to come to you - sorry to interrupt your chat again. Even getting out of the place was difficult as we had to again seek staff attention to obtain the bill and after receiving it I had to go to the bar again as no-one was coming over to let me pay. Don’t bother coming to my table with a card machine - I’ll come to the bar and pay so you don’t have to move. When paying I awaited for the usual courtesy of ‘How was you meal?’ or ‘Was everything ok?’ Not a chance! So here’s my feedback whether you like it or not. I hope this review saves other people from suffering the same experiences that we had. Oh yes - and the toilets are like something out of a 1970s football ground - perhaps that was the last time they were cleaned. Of course the Ladies toilet didn’t work - much like the staff. So someone came up with the bright idea that ladies would share the gents toilet. Come on ladies - fancy watching some guy with his bits hanging out while you use the cubicle with the toilet seat hanging off and try to avoid touching anything. Is this even legal? So thanks to The 78 for giving me an unforgettable Birthday Meal with my family. Unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. We won’t be back and I would urge people to await this place being closed down and refurbished by the next owner. It looks like the closing down process has already started and the staff have definitely stopped working.

I went here as a group of 5 and really liked the food. I had the cauliflower wings and the jackfruit burger. The portion sizes were huge, so much so I couldn't fit in dessert. The cauliflower coating was lovely and the burger was just fantastic, it was full of spices and flavour. The side chips were quite bland though, no seasoning to them. The reason for 4 stars is that the service isn't great. There were no drinks menus on the table so it was a bit of a guessing game with people wandering up to the bar to have a look. When the waiter took our order he tried memorising it, got it completely wrong then got a pad of paper and we had to repeat our order. Also they didn't clear the tables as you were finished, it was more bung them all at the end out of the way. I think the staff probably need some experience in restaurant front of house duties. Overall though it's definitely worth a visit and I would go back again. I'm not a vegetarian but that burger was better than most meat burgers I've eaten!

Tasty vegan food combined with very good, efficient and smiley waitress

This place has a short but interesting menu and all the food is vegan. We enjoyed one of their daily dahl dishes and a seitan burger with loads of nice chips. A bottle of Sangiovese was very good and moderately priced. We went on a Wednesday evening at 6 after booking a table, and it was pretty busy by the time we left an hour later, so I think it must be rather popular.

Our second visit here and hopefully not the last. Delicious, tasty food and a great selection of drinks. The cider on tap was amazing. Had the cauliflower wings, falafel main and jackfruit burger. We loved it all. Staff were super friendly. Wished we could have stayed longer but were off to a gig. Thank you everyone.

It’s an OK pub but I wouldn’t choose to go here again. It’s absolutely extortionate and I’m not sure it’s worth it.

Been here on numerous occasions and it's always been good, however this time it was not. We were here for a birthday lunch as a group of 4. Food wasn't up to scratch. Macaroni bites were claggy and tasteless. Burgers messy and the bun was too soft and collapsed. Not a nice burger bun at all. Chips were overly salty and a bit soft. Service wasn't best. Felt the waitress couldn't really be bothered and seemed to be annoyed when we asked for fresh cutlery after starters. Have noticed the 78 cold on several occasions. There didn't seem to be any heating on and had to sit with my jacket on the whole time. In the toilets the hand dryer did not work , a toilet seat would not stay up and there was no soap in any of the dispensers. Rather disappointing and might decide not to visit again as a result which is a shame cos it's been very good in the past.

Food is okay, the hummus starter is tiny, the tofu burger wasnt great, and the chocolate brownie was very dry

Lovely little pub that serves up all sorts of delicious vegan food. Nice selection and the food is super fresh. Cracking vibe and the staff are lovely. Highly recommend it.

Visited The 78 for drinks before Kevin Bridges show recently and it was quite the gem just tucked away from the main road in which getting seated can be a nightmare. The drinks on offer were as expected and pricing very fair also. There were a lot of diners and from my scan of the menu and general vibe it was a cosy place to be. I would definitely return to try the food.

Great local serving vegan food. Staff were friendly and attentive. Portions were generous and decently priced. Wife and I had the burger and Mac & Cheese which we both enjoyed. The toilets could use some sprucing up (!), hence the 4 star

Great vibes/great food - beverages stupidly expensive though!

Used to really like this bar as its vegan and dog friendly. Went for lunch recently and the olives were too salty to eat, the menu is the size of the portions - tiny. A sharing player was a few leaves, more inedible olives and a dollop of humous with some bread for a hefty price. Such a drop in food standards compared to what it used to be! Would really help lso when ordering if you are told your order has a repeat of items on it such as olives of the sea.

Slow service. Garlic bread didn't taste of garlic and the table bread was stale. Meatball sub tasted of plastic and had barely any filling. Whole meal was flavourless.

I hadn't realised the restaurant was a restaurant/ bar, and the menu was more limited than I'd expected. However everything we had was excellent, with generous portion sizes and attentive smiling service. A special evening with delicious food. Relaxed and homely atmosphere.

I'm in love with this vegan restaurant! My friends and I came here for dessert and I was amazed at how delicious the vegan brownies are ...... I think it's a difficult thing for any restaurant to try to make vegan brownies taste good. Next time I will come for a meal🥰

Out and about for husband's 60th birthday and we came across The 78. Have been meaning to go for years so we gave it a try. Super friendly staff, a really inventive, vegan menu and a great range of drinks. We both ordered off the special menu and were more than happy with our tasty food. Can't wait to return and try other dishes, all looked good.

Really great food and nice atmosphere. The only area for improvement was info on allergens/dietary requirements - we had to ask a few times about the choices on the board and the staff member wasn't sure what things had gluten in them and what was vegan. It would have helped if the items on the board had been labelled GF / VG etc.

Had a booking before a gig at the Bandstand so arrived around 5pm on a Friday evening. Table was for inside but the weather was good so we picked up the last free table outside. That meant we had to order each time by going inside but this was no issue. Vegan menu but fairly varied and had good specials. Went for the tofu ramen which I really enjoyed. Chips as a side were very tasty too. Drinks wise a good selection and has a homely feel inside. Have been once before on a cold evening and the fire was roaring which again made for a pleasant visit. Location is easy to get to and close to the Bandstand if you are going there. Staff friendly and no issues.

I wish I had taken the photos when the food arrived but we were hungry so we just digged in. It was delicious and lovely service.

We were turned away from our first choice as we hadn't booked, and I'm so glad we were! It meant we found The 78. Such a friendly, relaxed and positive atmosphere. The food is all vegan and my god we didn't miss the meat! My husband hand a crispy 'chicken' burger with skinny fries and onion rings while I had miso ramen with tofu. We ended up chatting with other diners. Staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. Having seen what others were eating, we're going back for lunch tomorrow!

This is a great place to eat in Glasgow when in the west end. The small plates are great and the bigger ones are a great amount of food. All the food was really tasty! Staff are great and its got a lovely relaxed vibe. Dog friendly also 😍😍😍🐶🐶🐾🐾🐾

One of the first vegan places in Glasgow I have ever visited years ago. Haven't been for a while and decided to see how things are. Was not disappointed. Food is delicious and we got to enjoy some sunshine outside as well.

I always love this place, friendly staff, nice patrons, and always good for a chat. I'm old now, so I find that live music can be a bit much for a super chilled bar, but I like that they have things in the evening to entertain. Food can be mixed at times, though I would say it ranges from good to great, so you'll leave content and full!

Had a lovely lunch. Vegan buffalo chicken burger was ace! On top of that they have a great selection of beers on offer.

This place was my saving grace after the other vegan place I was going to was randomly closed, so I was grateful it was close by. The food is just your traditional pub food. Not great quality but lots of chips. Service wasn't great. The server asked if I would like any extra sauces, which was nice, and I asked for garlic mayo... But it never arrived. They had an outside sitting area, which was lovely to sit in.

Absolutely the best. Super relaxed vegan food, never had a bad meal or a bad drink here. Staff have always been very lovely and friendly. It's our automatic go-to pub to bring friends from out of town and we're not even vegan!

This is a great vegan place for food and drinks. Staff is very friendly, prices not too bad and seating outside in the sunshine is grand. I even spotted Paul Higgins in there! Location is pretty convenient so would definitely recommend if you are around the West End area.

We are vegan we got the hummus bowl and cauliflower wings, delicious! The service is awful. We sat with empty drinks and dirty dishes for 20min. Jeez. Come here for the food not to have a fun service experience, or really any service experience at all. Lol:/

Revisited with our sons (one of whom is vegan) after lockdown recently on a Sunday jazz night! Menu is vastly reduced from previous one but hope that this builds up again as ‘normality’ resumes… Atmosphere, food, drink and music were all superb! A great night had by all!

we came with our 3 children who are quite young so we booked for 5pm. The staff were kind and helpful and the food was incredible. I would totally recommend this place. I’m the only vegan in my family of 5 and everyone really enjoyed their dinner.

Our favourite vegan spot in Glasgow, absolutely delicious fare and the place is super cute to boot, with a lit fireplace in the winter months. Always comforting and fresh food on the menu. Don't pass up on the desserts!

The Chick'n burger was pure delight and my partner also loved her gnocchis with tomato sauce. 10/10 would recommend for all vegans (or anybody else, really) visiting Glasgow!

I really like the 78. They've got great beers and the food is brilliant! Great portions and super tasty even for a non vegan like me.

Wanted to try it for some time now and it did not disappoint. The French toast was just perfect, they did not abuse sugar and the marmalade was delicious. Highly recommended. And the burrito was a perfect breakfast option and not heavy at all. I wish I could have had more options or tried the chicken vegan burger, but I'm very impressed.

Eat and drink at the 78 regularly. The atmosphere is the best there is, food, choice of drinks, music and staff are always amazing. Celebrated a family birthday there last night, the service is absolutely spot on, so friendly, polite not intrusive at all but just seem to know when and what is needed. Thank you and keep on doing what you are doing you are just great x
