Thai Square St Albans in St Albans

Previously eaten at this restaurant ( and other Thai Restaurants ), many times when visiting St. Albans and not at all bad. However, our family party of nine, booked in reasonably early on a recent Saturday night and we were unimpressed with our experience, to say the least. Initially, apart from the man on the door, the traditional Thai welcome and service was lacking. Although, all orders were placed together at the same time, food arrived piece meal with some dishes arriving cold! Those that were cold were sent back for heating, eventually re-arrived but portions were now much smaller, this process took so long that the rice dishes were now cold and so the cycle went on. One of our party however had been waiting throughout all this time for his main to arrive, which it did just as everyone else was finishing! Food average, price above average, service below average. Change of ownership? Bad management? Disorganised Kitchen?

Just had a very nice light dinner in the Thai Square. The service was fine and the food just right. I had stir fry lamb and my wife had chicken curry in a nice creamy sauce. I was surpised at the negative comments below, they had a couple of big parties in yet they coped without any problems.

Wonderful converted pub to a Thai restaurant. The staff were very friendly, however the food needs improvement. No fresh ingredients used for the starters, the food did not come out in time. The place smells of old pub which I personally find revolting. The main was well executed but has not convinced me to go back.

We visited St Albans and was searching for a place for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised visiting this restaurant. Spacious, intimate, the staff was very helpful. And our little daughter also liked it very much, especially an elephant statue!

Thai Square St Albans is in a lovely 15th century grade II listed building with beautiful beams - it truly is a gorgeous restaurant and setting. Our service was great, our host was very kind and attentive. Overall the food was nice, but there is better Thai food in St Albans currently for the price. I had the Pad Se Ew noodles and a mixed starter to share. I would definitely visit again and try more of the menu

Good location and decor and food. Bad approach to customer service. 2 stars because I asked for a small change in a dish, Chef refused unnecessarily. (Instead of prawn, asked for squid, what is so big deal?) Learn to adapt and please your customers. You are not McDonalds.

Turned up NYE desperate for a table as the restaurant we had booked at had closed without warning. The Thai Square staff kindly found a way to fit us in between bookings. They were fully booked and so very busy but we didn't have to wait long to place orders and receive food. Excellent food, excellent service, as always. 10/10 saved our night 😁

We always love the food at Thai square but the service is so slow. The table we sat at was in the corner as well so we felt very out of it. Please recruit more staff or train them to be more attentive! Lovely food as always

We were put upstairs. Zero atmosphere. Felt like sitting in a school dining hall. Cold, dark and dreary!

Great venue. Food is tasty. Drunken noodles far too spicy. This place would be 5 out of 5 if the management was better. Slow service, orders wrong. Needs more staff.

If you're out of something you shouldn't take 45 minutes to let the customer know. Food is obviously batch cooked and focused on quantity over quality.

I went to Thai square last Saturday and it was extremely busy, but thankfully we were given a table without booking. Despite that, Fern was attentive and answered all our questions that we had. The food was delicious even though the wait was quite long. 100% recommend the lamb shank curry and my partner loved her stir fry with basil. will definitely be back to try again when it’s less busy!

I was served by Fern, she was very lovely and taught us a lot about Thai Culture: ฉันรักประเทศไทย! I can't wait to come back again with my other half!

Brilliant food. Great service especially from Ken with prompt and class service. All round great experience.

Generally the food was good, however there were some disappointing dishes amongst our party of 6, eg. The duck spring rolls had one slither of shredded duck, so best described as vegetable spring rolls. The main meals were not served all together, so service not seamless. Average dining experience.

Cold restaurant & slow service. We were all sitting in our coats and they didn’t turn the heating on. They were so slow in giving us our food and taking our order. The food was fine (not out of the world), but not worth it to be sitting cold and waiting an age

Went here with work colleagues for dinner and I must say everything was great about the place. Beautiful venue, friendly staff and some very tasty food.

AMAZING food, great service. ANGIE took great care of us and gave us reccomdations on what to try. She was knowledgeable about dietary restrictions. I am gluten add dairy intolerant and she was able to reccomend a lot of dishes. Thank you for making our meal special. Will be coming back again.

We ordered the Tom Yum Soup, Green Curry, grilled pork collar, and mango sticky rice. The food was absolutely tasty and quite authentic. Totally worth the price. Vee served us, and she was fantastic, very friendly and attended to us when we needed help.

If I could give Thai Square 10 stars I would! My wife and I had our wedding reception here, and from day 1 of organising Ken and his staff were beyond helpful in every way possible, ensuring all arrangements were taken care of, allowing us flexibility for arranging furniture and tables, decorating and then on the day truly felt like they were part of our guest list - mingling with our guests, having a laugh with everyone and above all ensuring stellar service. The set menu was easy to understand, and it was all so affordable at such high quality. We truly couldn't have wished for a better reception - the atmosphere, food, drink and service was beyond measure in our eyes. Thank you Thai Square for giving us the happiest evening of our lives, anyone would be lucky to host their wedding reception here.

This restaurant was the definition of perfection. Came here with my partner to celebrate my 30th. We came across the most stunning tudor building and just had to go inside. We were very warmly greeted and shown to a table. Promptly served, we had the vegetarian sharing starter and it was so fresh and well cooked. We enjoyed every bite! This had tempura veg, spring rolls, satay and corn cakes. Lots to eat and very reasonably priced at about £17, more than enough for the 2 of us. For my main, I had the vegetable green curry and egg fried rice. it was amazing! Nice big portions and left very full. 10/10 would recommend.

Poor quality food. Unfortunately their isn't any food I can rate as fair, we ordered 8 different dishes, chicken, beef & fish. None of had the authentic taste of Thai food. Most of the food we had tasted like sweet chilli sauce. It's too fake the food but they did have great personnel. Theirs staff are welcoming.

Awful service then told no service charge to pay! Waited over 1hr for food

Very rude staff, no respect for privacy laws and data protection. After I booked a table, I go bombed with countless text messages. I did not even give them my number or permission to send me text messages. When I called them to remove my number from their system and stop SPAM texts, they cancelled my booking. Their loss, not mine. There are many more restaurants to eat out in and I’m happy to spend my money elsewhere.

Very disappointing experience. Took 3 hours to get through our meal. It went wrong when the starter arrived an hour in it was cold as if it had been sitting out for a long while. We did get this changed but I had to go to the concierge as there was no one to call back to the table. We then waited another 1.5 hours to get our main, they brought warm plates about 45 minutes before the food turned up so plates were cold by the time the food arrived, Food was ok, had much better in other branches of this chain and in other Thai restaurants. We will not be returning,

I’ve eaten here a number of times and always have had great service and a good feed. The team at Thai Square produces fresh tasty food with decent service. It’s a regular on my foot list of restaurants in St Albans.

Incredibly friendly, awesome food

We went as a couple for a nice evening, Sunday evening, food is expensive here ,we ordered starters which weren't much at all ,main courses were nice but extremely sweet sauce ,almost unedible .Service was good but atmosphere was pretty boring and uneventful.

Super overpriced mediocre food with disappointingly small portions. Also, I’m not sure where did my 12.5% service charge go. Didn’t even get tap water… I can’t believe we spent over £30 per person and still felt hungry.

They did have a few big parties in there , which was probably why I was left at the door without acknowledgment for 5 mins … I had the Pad Thai which was good but, I have had better, the side of broccoli was good though …

Great food that never disappoints, I recommend the Chilli lamb and the starters are great.

Mains were very tasty, I would recommend the set menu. The squid starter was a bit too oily for my liking. All-in-all it was nice authentic Thai food, it does not feel like a watered-down chain at all. They made a special effort for a birthday we were celebrating, nice complementary dessert

Honestly the food was really sub par. I've had way better quality from Thai rack just down the road for half the price. The pad Thai is way too sweet and otherwise flavourless, the green curry is mediocre at best. All the servings are very small and you pay about £16 for a main and rice. Total waste of time and money. Very disappointed. Service was good at least.

Have enjoyed the food there many times. This time was a take out. Lacked flavour.

Not very impressed with the service,we were the only couple in and it seemed an effort to take our order, we asked for tap water got bottled water, ( so obviously a charge) the crispy duck was quite tasteless, the massaman chicken curry had tinned potatoes and grisly chicken thigh. They also put an "optional" gratuity charge in our case over £9

Best Thai food chain. I only go there for a good Thai. Green curry, duck curry and pad Thai are my favourites. It is also a good place for gluten free as most of the dishes are naturally without gluten.

Overpriced and under flavored. The pad Thai tastes like ketchup. Portions would be questionable at half their price. Go to Thai Rack down the road. Avoid Thai Square.

The food was fresh and tasty, the staff was kind. The place is quite and the atmosphere is calm.

There was a large group of us so we booked ahead. The staff were friendly and the food was good. We went on a Sunday lunchtime and it was very quiet.

Smaller portions, not very friendly telling us immediately how long we had to eat up before they closed (we arrived around 9.00pm), food ok but nothing special. Ok but not memorable.

Food was below expectation the lamb shank was very dry which is normally a moist cut.

Beautiful surroundings. Sat down immediately. Whole section for vegetarian and vegans. Allergens labelled clearly. The spicy aubergine and coconut rice were some of the nicest dishes I’ve ever had. Lots of choice, we ordered three starters and they came out quickly and were freshly made (nice and hot!) staff very friendly and cannot wait to come back again. Would recommend for both a casual lunch time and a nice dinner.

Went on Saturday for my birthday, not impressed my friend had beef so chewy it was inedible we did complain & was taken off the bill, my other friend had Massaman chicken curry & has been sick all weekend. Will not be returning here again.

Food was good, service was quick (we were in and out in under an hour, it felt too rushed rather than a relaxing dinner). Portion size was small, poor value for money. A 'discretionary' 12.5% top added and when I went to pay was automatically assumed and was already typed into the card machine without checking! A rushed, small meal, not a relaxing dinner. I will not be returning.

The welcome was limited. Menus given and then no service until we asked. Drinks delivered in two lots. The starters were delivered but one was delayed after they had to change it as first choice not available. The chicken satay was cold. The table was cleared and re-set by a very sullen waitress. The mains came and again one was on a cold plate and look warm. At no time did anyone come near to ask how the meal was! The atmosphere was poor. Our friends who were visiting love Thai food and were unimpressed. Would I go again? Never! Poor service and mediocre Thai food. There has to be better!

Thai square is always a great choice for its good quality and ambience. The only thing I would say is that it’s highly priced for the portion sizing and the waitress we were served by looked lack it was the last thing she wanted to be doing! Thoroughly miserable despite trying to engage her.

Awesome Thai food. Everything we tried was of great taste. The ambience is nice, the hosts are nice. Real wonderful experience and a must visit.

Heating wasn't working and only one person serving all of restaurant so very slow service

This was an anniversary dinner. Bland food and when we complained and ordered something else, they forgot to bring it by which time my wife finished her meal. No acknowledgment of celebration and although offered a 25% Discount the experience ruined the evening and we left hungry. Never again.

As it's a chain, I've never had real Thai at any of the Thai Square in and outside London, including this one in St Albans. The only good thing is its ambience. If you consider having a few glasses of wine and not expecting good food, then it's the right place to go. Right in town centre and see the traffic go by, taking a walk afterwards is pleasant.

I enjoyed my meal at Thai Square and would give it a 10/10 as far as the tastiness of the food. I had a mixed starter which I shared with a friend and the Drunken Noodles as my main. I asked for the Drunken Noodles to be made extra spicy and it was perfect. My only complaint was that I felt the portion was a tad small. I enjoyed my Drunken Noodles so much that I ordered some to take home and it didn’t fill the entire container. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the food. The service was ok and the general ambience of the restaurant was nice.

Shocking service & poor hygiene standards. The place was cold (it is an old building) but we were also greeted with a cold welcome! The service was so poor, that we had to ask so many times for serving spoons/ cutlery/ napkins etc and the staff just didn't seem to care and looked like they were moving aimlessly from one table to another. The unforgivable for me was that there was no running water in the men's toilets - we also saw a chef use the toilet and not be able to wash his hands. I complained to a member of staff who seemed not to care that the water was not working in the men's toilets - in the end my wife complained to the manager who to be fair did explain that the chef would wash his hands again upon entering the kitchen (one would hope!) it did put me off my food; the food in general was not bad - tasted a bit re-heated and i certainly wouldn't call it value for money. The manager seemed to understand and thank goodness we didn't have to pay the (optional?) service charge. It was supposed to be a nice family meal out; I certainly wouldn't recommend nor would I return. I will spend my hard earned money at establishments that are welcoming and genuinely feel like they want our business. Avoid.

First visit and will not be returning. Food was poor far from authentic and agree with all the previously comments that it tastes like it’s been microwaved. Well overpriced and they add on a service charge - I don’t think so. One of our waitresses was wearing surgical gloves which as a healthcare professional really put me off and contradicts health & safety entirely. POOR.

Fantastic old building however the food and service on a Sunday evening was not good. Staff were not very friendly and seemed not bothered. Dirty glass, duck starter was not good, plum sauce was watery. Mains were all average at best. Real shame.

Lovely food, good price and would recommend to anyone

Havent been here in years and thought we'd give it another go! The service was good although it was fairly quiet. We had been on busy nights in the past and it was a tad frustrating! Food was good and they went off menu for our son who didn't like anything on the menu. He loved the plain noodles and chicken though. Husband enjoyed his red curry but I probably went a bit too safe with my beef and oyster sauce. The jury is still out on the jasmine, coconut and candy floss sorbet. Was looking forward to some sort of battered banana or pineapple but they weren't on the menu.

Nice environment but with poor service and only one/two waiters during lunch time. The staff were rude and unattentive throughout our time there. We found a piece of hair in the dumplings during our starter which they did eventually replace. Then found another piece of hair in our main. They did not apologise or even react to either of these situations. Food otherwise was luke warm and average. Would not recommend.

Disappointed with food I ordered sea bass asked what vegetables were included waitress did not know and then arrived with 2 bits of broccoli 2 slices carrots and snap peas lumps of garlic Pork dish was tough full of gristle Chicken overpowered by taste of lime leaves

We had a really nice lunch there. The service was quick, the staff friendly. Good anti-covid measures. The food was really tasty, well proportioned and we will definitely be going back. Came back 1 year on and it's still great. The Mrs had a chicken noodle dish and I had a stir-fry ginger beef dish with rice for lunch. Absolutely love the food and experience.
