This absolute gem of a restaurant is located in Crieff, and my partner and I visited as we wanted a better option than the places in Crieff Hydro. This was a short walk away from the hotel - maybe ten minutes each way.The staff could not be friendlier here - from the moment we phoned to book until we paid our bill at the end, they were warm and friendly and accommodating!!The food here is incredible. We had the vegetable tempura, vegetarian spring rolls, and shrimp pad Thai and I can honestly said I have never had better. We spent the previous few days eating and honestly I wasn’t even that hungry and this food was still out of this world GOOD. Everything was so fresh and flavourful and beautifully presented. The restaurant itself is really quaint and even on an unusually hot day in Crieff (23C with no clouds or breeze) it was fresh and cool inside. If you come to Crieff you absolutely must visit this place. Five stars aren’t enough !!!

Thai E San Crieff is a lovely little restaurant. We went there while staying at Crieff Hydro because we fancied something a bit different. The owners are a Thai couple who are lovely and so accommodating. Firstly I want to share that “E San” means North Eastern Part of Thailand which are famous for spicy Thai salad dishes. So I would suggest getting Laab Moo - a spicy pork salad - which is authentic and really delicious. And order Sticky rice to accompany. I suspect “Som Tum” would be good too but we didn’t order it this time. The other dishes we ordered was also nice although note that the cooking style might not be the same as other Thai restaurant which serve central Thai food. I personally like the dishes and they were yummy home cook style food. We had a four year old fussy eater with us. And I phoned up and spoke to the owner who is a chef as asked whether it’s possibly to get some soup noodle for my daughter. And to my delight, she said of course, even though it’s not on the menu. We were so touched. Because now we can go and eat Thai dinner. Haha. And also when we were leaving without having dessert, our daughter cried and the owner kindly bought her an ice cream. We’ve never received such thoughtful service. We highly recommend stopping by for authentic Thai north eastern cuisine and wonderful service.

perhaps we were expecting too much, having read rave reviews about this restaurant. the massaman curry dish was was a little odd. while the curry "sauce" was quite tasty, the ingredients included canned peach slices and canned pineapple. the stir fry dish was void of any flavor. the rice was not jasmine rice, but some cheaper rice.

I used to love this place but the food i had on my last visit was truly horrible. The soup was full of bits of wood which I think were supposed to be lemongrass, and the Pad Thai seemed to have been made with copious amounts of tomato ketchup. Both these dishes used to be delicious. I did complain but the owner didn't seem to understand. I still have the taste in my mouth. My last visit.

They didn't seem bothered about our booking, and were lead into an empty room with several tables that seemed to have been untouched for a while. The menu was like a takeaway leaflet, it was then that we realised we'd made a mistake but we thought we'd give them a chance. Having read the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor I thought I would visit Thai E San Crieff. Unfortunately the visit did not match my expectations. The server welcomed me as soon as I had climbed the stairs and was attentive throughout.I liked the decor. It felt like eating in someone's house which could probably do with a bit of updating but is comfortable just as it is.Unfortunately the food did not live up to my expectations. Having read the previous reviews I expected my meal to be delicious but it was distinctly average.I had a soup starter with prawns in it which was ok. It did however lack any any depth of flavour and the prawns themselves were tasteless.I then had a red chicken curry. This came more in the form of a soup than a curry and was really quite oily. Certainly not the best Thai meal I have ever had.I do feel slightly guilty writing this review as the service in the restaurant was excellent.

As mentioned in previous reviews the restaurant entrance is up some stairs off the Main Street. We received a warm welcome with excellent service. We ordered a Thai green curr,y, a spicy Thai prawn dish with coconut rice and egg noodles. What we received was easily up with the best Thai food I've ever tasted, bursting with flavour and unafraid to use chilli where the menu said it would be used. The separation of flavours was fantastic and nev was there a moment where the chilli in the dishes became an overbearing feature

My wife also enjoyed the Satay. I had the Jungle Curry for main (can't remember the Thai name) and it was excellent, runnier curry stock style sauce that the sticky rice soaked up nicely. Large portion of well cooked vegetables and chicken that was really a taste sensation. My wife also raved about her beef chilli salad. Both meals were very spicy though which we both like. For desert, a stewed banana in coconut milk pudding. Never had it before but would get it again - only for those with a very sweet tooth! We ordered a takeaway of a choice of the most famous dishes and could barely recognise them. Som Tam Papaya had a load of Tomato Ketchup or Red pepper sauce, a taste never found in Thai food, the Tom Yam soup was greasy and again tomatoey like spicy Ministrone, the Pat Thai was solid with cornstarch and dark with soy sauce inedible in fact and the Thai green curry was a sweet sickly supermarket paste Sharwoods I guess! All the vegetables were frozen catering packs of crinkle cut carrots and shredded tasteless bits. God knows what other reviewers think Thai food is like? Well it's not like this! This restaurant has refined the art of making Thai food tasteless. Bad Thai restaurants usually resort to heavy use of chillies and a few carved vegetables but this one avoids that and produces tasteless food made from a limited range of the cheaper vegetables and ,I would imagine, the cheapest meat they can track down.Add clearly straight from the freezer and fried starters and drinks at £3.95 per 330 mls for Singha beer or a glass of wine and you have a flavour of the place (décor could do with freshening up and do not look at the carpet in the entrance lobby). All in all a rip off.

Our 3 kids (8,5,5) happily munched their way through a mild green curry while my wife and I shared red and massaman curries - we asked them to spice them up a bit more and they duly obliged. We all shared 2 portions of Chicken Satay to start which was also very tasty.I would happily recommend the food and the service was also very good - will definitely return.Earlier comments had also said that they took cash only - we were able to pay the bill using a credit card, not sure when they started taking card payments.

Had a couple of Thai takeaways from this reastaurant, both were very good. A twenty minute wait from ordering to collection makes it the perfect fast food operation. The set banquet for two at £29.50 was excellent value and very tasty.

In terms of value for money, it should be at least 4 stars probably 5. I found the food to be a little too salty, hence my 3 star rating. However, the other 5 family members with me didn't have any complaints, so perhaps I am being a bit unfair. We were the only ones there, so the service was excellent and the food came quickly. As it's upstairs, there is a nice view to be had through the windows. The set menu which 4 of us ordered from offered a good selection, and we all had different dishes which with the exception of my green curry which I found a tad too salty, were pronounced delicious. I think it was £7.95 for 2 courses, but can't quite remember. Definitely under £10.

When you arrive at the restaurant ( if you can find it ) don't be too surprised to see a few empty seats and don't let this put you off. The super value takeaway menu means many folk never use the main restaurant. We had a mix of three starters: goong hom pa, Kari pup, and satay chicken. Delicious. Followed by chicken pad Thai and a vegetable massaman curry with steamed rice. Again delicious . Service is super friendly and good value for money. 5 rating with no hesitation.

Stumbling apron this Thai almost by accident we could of been forgiven for walking on by on first appearance. The decor is a little dated and could use a freshen up but the service by our friendly and rather quirky authentic Thai waiter and furthermore the quality of our 2 course meal was very good indeed. Also served at a reasonable price. This is never going to be a Michelin stared venue but looking beyond "surface aesthetic" this is an honest attempt at Thai dinning without pretentious marketing. A rough gem not without fault but a gem none the less. 4/5

I have been to this restaurant many times and I have never had a bad meal. It is sometimes very busy but more often than not we are alone at a table or there are only one or two other tables occupied. I think it is because people don't notice it because it is upstairs and the entrance is squeezed between two other shops. If you live in or are visiting Crieff you have to visit this restaurant. The food is so good and the service matches it. The young man who welcomes you, also takes your order, serves your drinks and your meals and always manages to do it with a smile and a chat. The food is full of flavour and is extremely good value for money. Please give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

I am careful to be honest and thoughtful in the reviews I write and hope of the same from others. For this reason we went to this restaurant because of the good reviews on Trip Advisor. Our experience was the opposite. The food was horrific and I am not going to indulge in detail because it was just brush-stroke appalling and I dread to think what the kitchen must be like. Service was rude and quite honestly disgraceful conduct when it comes to handling complaints. There is simply nothing authentic about this place and if you're looking for good Thai food I regret to say you will need to look further afield. A ruined night out.

What a great restaurant, the food is lovely, I've been 4 times now, had something different every time and never been disappointed. The service is spot on too. It's not easy to find (look for Ellie's Cellar and it's next door) and you need to go upstairs. It could do with a rebrand and a bit of a better site which would convince first timers to try it, but please give it a go. It definitely deserves to be higher than number 13 on here!

Do not be put off by the appearance of the building. It is well worth a trip up the steep staircase to sample a really interesting and authentic thai menu.A first visit for me......but I will be back!

The food at Thai Esan is delicious home cooked, authentic Thai. The laab is my favourite dish ever, combined with the papaya salad and sticky rice... Wow!!!!Family run and family friendly. My three year old loves the chicken lollipops and we are always made very welcome with small kids. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

I approached this meal with trepidation.A non entrance up relatively steep stairs and an empty Restaurant.Toilet - up yet other stairs, but spacious and more to the point, clean. Also - there appeared to be 3 rooms to let on the top floor, which could of interest to other visitors, as the property is well situated in the centre of Creiff. ideally positioned for touring.Unexpectedly the Meal was marvellous.Slow to appear but everything cooked from scratch. Loved the rice served in the bamboo, lidded, containers - a first for me.It appeared to be an Family run establishment. All I can do is recommend No 28, I think, the Prawn dish. I have never tasted a better or more generous portion. The Egg rice was also excellent. How can there be a Thai Restaurant in Creiff ?. We did see Take-away's being collected, maybe that + the rooms make it a viable business. All I can say is, people of Creiff, you have an undiscovered gem in your midst.

Ate here twice during our week stay in Crieff, on both occasions very tasty, authentic Thai food. It is a little tricky to find and looks a little shabby but both service and food were excellent, would recommend to everyone.

A hidden gem in the heart of Crieff, on the first floor so not noticeable from walking past. A quiet restaurant with a great atmosphere with nice friendly staff. Amazing food, the best coconut rice I've ever eaten. Definitely recommend if you love Thai food or are in the Crieff area.

You could easily walk past this restaurant as it is on the 1st floor and when we walked past during the day the front door was closed and there was no menu visible. We booked anyway having checked that they had a selection of veggie food. The stairway up from the street can do with a make-over but the small restaurant was fine and the waiter was very friendly and efficient. We both had the sweetcorn "pancakes" as a starter and they were tasty if a bit too crispy. I had sweet and sour vegetables with sweet & sour sauce and sticky rice - very tasty and my wife enjoyed her vegetables in a curry sauce with steamed rice. We stayed off the dishes with the 2 and 3 chilli symbols against them as there was no key as to what they indicated in terms of heat.

dined here on 19/1/2013 with friends, not much atmosphere in this place, decor could use a makeover and the broken mirror replacing. Ordered some spirits with mixers, for some reason the drinks tasted stale and well... "weird", did highlight this to the waiter but fell on deaf ears. Ordered the food and although we were the only 4 in the place it took over 40 minutes to come! food was tasty enough and plentiful, although no rice served unless requested separately, perhaps the waiter could advise beforehand! I'd not dine here again.

Let me start from the good points : the wine and the beer were properly cold. That it is!!!!!On the downside the tom yams, prawns and vegetables, were both tasting smoked ( that is when a careless cook will flash the oil in the wok giving any food in it a caracteristic sickly smoky flawour.)Both main courses , the green curry and the Pad ga praow did not have any thai basil. For both dishes the basil is the main flavour !!! The worst we ate in a long time !!!The noodles were absolutly testeless and the boil rice compleetly overcooked and melting in the mouth. We were hoping for something better than what we got given the reviwes and the fact that the family running this outdated hotel where the 24 cover restaurant is located are indeed real thai people and not chinese trying to run a thai restaurant. The toilet are situated on the third floor of the building. It was a trip back to the 70 s .The place was neverthe less freshly painted. The restaurant is on the first floor and the windows have secondary double glazing and the room was unconfortably hot.We could have put up with all the bad points if only the food had been good. :-((. The refusal albeit advertised to axcpet credit/debit card was the cherry over the cake. I always pay cash but why are this people writing hand made bills on flying pices of paper and then refuse traceble transactions ???

The restaurant is upstairs, which might put some people off as you can't see what it looks like until you go in. Don't worry, it's a very pleasant restaurant, and we had one of their banquets which was very tasty, with a nice selection of food. The restaurant was quite quiet when we went, and it deserves better custom!

Entrance left a little to be desired, but once inside the restaurant it wasn't too bad. The staff (only saw 1) was very nice, he opened the door, served the drinks , took our orders, bought the food and cleared the table. He definitely earns his money! Food was nice, starters were excellent!

As other reviewers have said, the restaurant itself is nothing to write home about. However, the food was really tasty. We went on a Saturday night and sadly there were only 2 other tables in there. The staff were very friendly, though, and the service fast & efficient. Even though we were the only 2 people left in the restaurant by the time we had finished eating, we felt under no pressure to leave.Give this place a go. You won't be disappointed. Oh, take cash and it doesn't accept cards.
