Tavernaki in Hertsmere

Tavernaki is a classic. They hosted myself and 12 family members for a celebratory meal. We shared mezedes between us, and they were kind enough to make kalamari and chicken livers etc without flour for my Uncle who’s GF <3

Got a few veggie items for takeaway on mothers day. Even though they were busy all the dishes were lovely. We will definitely be back. Nice big portions to eat leftovers the next day so good value for all the veggie dishes.

Ordered 5 meza plenty dips and pitta breads and other side dishes when it came to meat and fish dish wasn’t even a skewer each of chicken pork etc when the fish came one small prawn each calamari was a few pieces each when they bought the main big fish was not enough for 5 people so not value for money would of been better to order normal main meals each would of been cheaper and more meat or fish

Great food had meze and was good selection starters picky bits fish and seafood and massive plate of meat £35 a head but boy am I stuffed!

This is as authentic as it gets. We ordered 5 meze for 5 adults and 3 children. We couldn't finish all the food. The koubebia (stuffed vine leaves) were so good, the flavours were perfect as good as my cypriot grandmas, maybe even better. The kalamari was fresh, the livers were so good even the kids ate them which I couldn't believe, as they'd never normally touch them. The afelia were a big hit, we had to stop my son from eating them all 🤣So many amazing starters we had to pace ourselves for the fish and then meat. Both the fish and meat were cooked perfectly, juicy and tender. Everyone really enjoyed the meal, we are real foodies and I'm glad I know where to come to taste authentic Greek food. The service was also amazing, very attentive, constantly clearing out plates and bringing fresh ones almost without disturbing us at all, thank you Fonzie. We will definitely be back!

For some reason the food was not all the that's on this visit, we had a meze that was being delivered to quick the pork souvlakia were dry and only warm, the lamb chops were slightly over cooked the chicken soulia was warm not hot the greek coffee was stale , just was not the standard on previous occasions ,not sure if ao will go again to sit and eat

Outstanding for a large family Sunday lunch. A proper Cypriot meze. Everything was very good - the stand outs were the afelia (best I have ever had, and I have had a lot of afelia) and the chicken souvla. Great service, excellent ambience, we will certainly be back.

I went there for lunch and it was empty and freezing cold. It shouldn’t have been open. Pretty average food and ridiculously expensive. I’ll never return.

How sad, I remember this place opening and having long dinners and chats with the management. Fast forward a few years, the affilia was always my favourite, sadly now it was mostly inedible, the manager asked me how it was as I began eating and I told him, I can barely get my teeth through it. He replied... oh its just the bone and walked off. I'll not be back despite having visited what must be 20-30 times. There's far better !! £5.50 for a bottle of water? Most reasonable restaurants in Central London are less. The second manager asked me on paying the bill if everything was OK. I then repeated ... not so good sadly. "Oh you should have said" dahhhh !!! Not for me... sorry tavernaki, you lost my custom, my families and friends custom. What a pity !!

Bloody awful, overpriced, food very average, The salad was not a greek salad and the tiny bits of feta was crap and cheap. As for that cocky waiter, he needs to give it up .Would I go again not bloody likely

Myself and my wife this afternoon, ordered the Kalamari for her £26.00 well overpriced , I had mixed grill £25.00 thats overpriced to, chips and greek salad are extra, now heres the thing you do not put lettuce in a greek salad, fetta was the cheapest probably lidles finest and as for the olive oil non existant certainly was a drop in the salad but cheapest you can get. 1 large bottle of Keo and a sparkling water later, My bill nearly £82 , Would we go back again, absolutly not well over priced. They are definately missing a trick. PS the waiter is to cocky and full of himself. When asked if the kalamri was fresh and where it was sourced = the answer is not from the SEA

Tavernaki is an exceptionally good restaurant . I from Cyprus and i have tried all good restaurant in Cyprus with the same type of food . There is no comparison to be made . This restaurant standard is well above any restaurant in Cyprus . High quality of food with an amazing taste . The Mix Grill is superb .

We decided to give Tavernaki a try as our little boy loves souvlaki and calamari. Overall the food was nice, the chicken souvlaki was lovely, as was the calamari but oh my goodness.... It cost £26 for a calamari main dish, which I expected to be plentiful but it certainly wasn't :( The Greek salad was a huge disappointment, (as far as I'm aware Greek salad doesn't include iceberg lettuce) barely any feta, no oregano, not properly dressed and again, portion size massively disappointing. The chips were over done, not very fresh... The service was very friendly, but for me, a bit of a rip off when there are so many other lovely Greek restaurants around. I don't mind paying more at all, and in fact we are all used to that now, but at least provide a decent portion and an authentic salad :(

My husband and I went for our anniversary for the 12th time! It’s such a warm and inviting atmosphere. Wonderful attentive staff and very friendly. It feels such a relaxing experience to go and enjoy home cooked food. So many delicious flavours we feel as if we are in Cyprus. Wonderful. Thank you Tavernaki x

You can barely move in there it's so crowded. £23 for 4 lamb chops also, didn't even come with chips. Wouldn't expect to spend that much and leave starving.

Good varied menu and excellent food

Starters tasty, but found the lamb to be tough, which was disappointing. The waiter I found quite abrupt, sadly can't see us rushing back again!

One of the worst Greek meals I’ve ever had and I’m Greek, left there feeling I’d been had over! Specials were offered with no price, absolutely tasteless when supposedly cooked on charcoal then hit with an extortionate surprise bill well over expectations. Not worth it, avoid, avoid, avoid. Go if you want to pay an arm an a leg for a tasteless below par meal. Tavernaki?! More like Takethemickey!!!

It is an okay place, the food is very average. In my opinion, prices are a bit expensive for its location and what's on offer. Would I go back? No.

Excellent food and service..but some small details spoil it a little. 6 of us for a meze, starters were excellent as was all the food. However in times that are becoming a little tight for everyone I found some cut backs and over pricing whilst the charges were at the high end. Lovely meze, no chips! Two tiny bowls of pourgouri and rice. The salad came right at the end with the fish. As a Greek I recommend salad with the meat. Now, a litre of water 4.75 not the best price for a bottle of water. My sons birthday so we asked for a little something with a candle in it. They gave us 4 pieces of Baklava and charged us 4.95, that's not a very Greek thing to do. It's not about the money it's about the gesture. Complementary fruit with tooth picks to pick. Some of the fruit browned off. Not very appealing. Ice cream? Glyko? 6 mezes 5 ssoft drinks 1 bottle of red £276. Do we need to charge 5£ for water and 4.95£ for a bit of baklava? Great food great service but make the customer feel at home and want to come back again and again and again. From a resteraunter of 25 years service Fix the small details. It's not about today but about the next time

Meal was like pre-cooked and mrcrowaved Cafe food. Service was ok but not to a professional standard. Food was extremely overpriced compared to other better restaurants.

Food was mediocre, one meal wasn’t as hot as it should be, kebab wasn’t served with any salad (never had that before in any Greek/Turkish restaurant). Also felt it was overpriced, Ive added up what we had numerous times to the menu prices and bill was more. Tried the place won’t be going back.

This is by far the best Greek restaurant around. I travel 10 miles to eat here. All the staff are great, but my last visit was ruined by the chief waiter. His mannerism is somewhat arrogant and almost condescending and on this occasion he showed his true colours. The moussaka dish caused the controversy. My GF asked me whether I thought that her dish was hot, and before I got a chance to test it, this waiter swooped over, asked what the problem was, and before being able to discuss, snatched the plate abruptly and said it wasn’t a problem we will sort it. A fresh replacement arrived soon that was piping hot, and after barely a mouthful eaten he asked how it was. He went on to say that the original serving was tested, and it was fine. Then went on to say that the customer is always right. My GF was upset by the sarcasm, and saying we were wrong, and now refuses to return, which saddens me as the food is so good.

Wow... Where do we start. Ok to be fair the meze was very full and generally good. Unfortunately the service was shocking, and I mean shocking. We first thought it might be us, but the couple opposite us complained at the end after being told "You don't want a pudding do you, as I have guests that need your seats" With us it was honestly ridiculous from literally throwing the plates onto the table to just walking off mid sentence. Basil Fawlty could learn a few things of this waiter. No tip left from us or the table opposite and I am positive we cant be alone. Just a thought if you read this review, you are not doing me a favour serving me at £90 per couple. Never ever again.

Terrible service. Our waiter insisted that we go for the special of the day ‘Tiger Prawns’ which we were told was the same price as our original starter. We were then presented with two measly prawns. The bill then arrived and we were shown two starters for £19.45 each. This was not the same price as our starter which we were originally going to order. No attempt was even made to provide an explanation or an apology. Make sure when specials are recommended you ask for the price as clearly they weren’t the same in our case!

We were a table of 6 and were looking forward to going to this restaurant. Arrived to an empty restaurant and waited to be seated by 2 waiters , who found it more important to continue their conversation , rather than seat us. We had to ask for drinks, as they did not come over to our table. We ordered Meze for 4 of us and 2 mixed grills. The meze for 4 barely sufficed for 2 , we are sure they gave the same portions as if we were 2. 1 of the grills was undercooked. Ver disappointed with the meals and the service 10 per cent added to our bill. Will not be going again

Ive orderd food from this restaurant a few times and I will say the food is nice. The down size is the staff are rude and unhelpful and this is the 2nd time I've been overcharged I've asked them at the time how much but have been told there to busy to tell me really been put off

We ordered Keftedes , dolmades, chicken souvlaki and lots of dips and salad.. well what can I say ! It was the most tasty, authentic Greek Cypriot food I have tasted since being in Cyprus. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to eat Greek food - delicious

The waiters were very rude which made everyone feel uncomfortable. We waited for a long time to get served and for the bill even though the restaurant was not busy. Whenever we asked for something the waiter was dismissive. The food was good but overpriced, especially the mixed grill platter that turned out to be for one person. They also did not ask us to fill in a locator form.

The service was unacceptable. From the moment we walked in until the moment we left we experienced terrible service and rudeness. Took ages to get sitted, order and receive our food even though the restaurant was nearly empty. Even when we asked for the check it took them about 20 minutes. We ordered a mix grill platter and based on the name we assumed should be appropriate for sharing. The portion was particularly small and the fries side arrived 5 minutes after the meat. The waiter was particularly rude when I asked if they have forgotten about it. The waitress was picking up bottles to check if they were empty and then leaving them back on the table. Unacceptable with covid going around. Also they did not provide a track and trace form and as we had just returned from holiday I didn’t think of asking.

Popped in last week for a meal after lockdown restrictions, this use to be my favourite Greek Cypriot restaurant since it opened its doors , however this time around it was well below the usual standard , truly gone down hill , shame !! Really wouldn’t recommend it , it’s had its day

After searching for a local restaurant, Tavernaki come up on the search, so we thought we would try out somewhere new.We love Cypriot Greek food, and have eaten our fair share of delicious Meze's and kebabs, so know when the food is of standard.We had taramasalata and Dolmas for starters. The dolma was delicious, tasty sauce and the vine leaves with the pork filling was exactly as it should be.The taramasalata was so bland if you closed your eyes and tasted it, you wouldn't have a clue what it was. Such a shame. We ordered lamb kebab and Lamb Souvlaki for our main dishes. The lamb kebab was very tough and bland, the lamb had a strange taste and put me off eating it. Not experienced this before?The staff were so rude, disregarded me and spoke to my partner. When I did tell the waiter what I would like he keep saying sorry? Over 5 times this happened. Very strange experience. No check back to ask if the food was ok either.It seems there has been a change in staff from reading some of the comments on here, so maybe they need to brush up on their customer service skills..I enjoyed the Dolma and Keo beer... I wouldn't bother going here if you want an enjoyable evening out. Unfortunately you won't get it here.

Had a greek meal here food is so nice really tasty cooked well waiters are friendly and funny! Atmosphere is great. Restaurant was clean hand sanitizers was by the door so all good. Would recommend you try at least once.

I’m a Greek Cypriot so I think I know whether or not a Cypriot restaurant is a decent standard. Tavernaki is very good. We went on a Tuesday lunchtime and the food was good. We had the full meze which had everything we expected it to contain and left stuffed and happy. A little pricier than elsewhere but nothing missing so you do get what you pay for.

Went on ‘Help to Eat Out’ a Tuesday night. The restaurant was jammed, good for them but not for spreading Covid. I cannot complain about the food which was great and tasty. However the main course arrived at 10.00pm. Nevertheless they only indication that there is a pandemic, was the waiters in face shields ,hand sanitizer at the entrance and taking our phone numbers. The table still had a cloth runner and no distance between them. There was one group of over 20 on one big table, too many to count. Not sure that’s permitted in these times? But the icing on the birthday cake was getting the whole restaurant to sing happy birthday TWICE! As I said food good but felt very uncomfortable. I would go back but NOT during Covid, I just hope we have not it!

We have been visiting Tavernake since they opened, it used to be great but original staff no longer work in potters bar, this lot are rude and think it’s acceptable to treat the customer like they are doing YOU a favour - never again the food gone right down hill too rushed harried and burnt comes to mind

A true taste of the Mediterranean.Wow! What a find! Super fresh and high quality food, cooked simply and to perfection.I phoned my order ahead, as we would be travelling from afar and were worried if it would still be warm by the time we got home, as it’s a 30 minute drive. We order 2 souvlakia, 1 sheftalia, calamari and octopus. They were kind enough to accommodate us, even when being really busy, by wrapping everything separately in foil, to keep it warm, the salad and dips in a separate bag to keep it cool, so by the time we got home, it was still piping hot.The calamari and octopus were amazing! It was cooked to perfection, they just melted in your mouth. I’ve never had dishes to that standard and high quality before, unless I’ve been in the Mediterranean.It tasted like it had just been fished out of the sea.A definite must try! Keep up the good work!

We’ve been going to Tavernaki for a few years now and before lockdown, we would eat in and have takeaways which were always good. Last week we ordered a takeaway, chicken souvlakia, pork souvlakia, chicken souvla, two calamari and two Greek salads. We asked for our salads not to be dressed.We get home and start to unpack things. Our order was fine, portion sizes good, all was good, however two things weren’t I’m afraid on this occasion. Both salad boxes had a about a half a centimetre of water across the bottom. The salad leaves hadn’t been drained properly. I poured it out but not quite the point. The second was the calamari. It was like chewing on leather. I tried a few pieces hoping it was just a couple of dud ones but unfortunately it was the lot. My daughter’s was the same. Really disappointed as I don’t know what they did to it but like shoe leather and all in the bin. Who knows?! Usually super soft, crispy in the outside and a pleasure to eat. It won’t stop me from going back as we do like the food and most times brilliant. But I won’t be eating calamari for a long time genuinely put me off. Sorry Tavenrnaki.

We decided to have a takeaway as we have missed eating at this superb restaurant since lockdown. It was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!! A big thank you to the owners for opening, to the staff who are working, especially the chefs Marcos &amp; Hampis, the presentation was EXCELLENT. We are looking forward to returning to eat in once the law allows, but in the meantime we will return for another takeaway as it was FABULOUS!!!

We have not been able to visit our favourite Greek restaurant for many weeks due to Coronavirus, so decided to do a takeaway. We can only say it was FANTASTIC!! Freshly prepared humus as a starter, followed by succulent lamb kebab with chips, salad &amp; the other main of chicken/vegetable kebab. Both dishes were presented with thought by Chefs Marcos &amp; Hampis, thank you both. Can only say this is a MUST to go eatery whether for takeaway or eat in when allowed.

So this is interesting - since this whole coronavirus crisis i have been struggling to cook every day and ordering is okay - average at best usually. Im not talking crap delivery here im talking high end delivery being average to good.I Just received this food and ate it - it was honestly the best thing i ate in 2 weeks. Next point i have to make is this is my first review of any restaurant. Good job to Tavernaki staff and ownership for delivering me such deliciousness. #shockedps _ im talking about the pita sandwiches they do specifically.

Went here with friends. The food and price is ok. Nothing special. Large variety on the menu. Service is a little slow and feels like they try and rush you to eat once served. Not very attentive. Also found it quite loud. Very hard to talk to your friends. Find yourself shouting louder to get heard.

Birthday dinner for party of 22 which had 10 Greek Cypriots diners.Food was astonishing! Meze so plentiful we had to 'doggy bag ' what remained.Staff friendly, jokey and well organised.I've noticed a 3 star review here written on 7th January from a French poster.To say the food is not authentic is ludicrous - us Cypriots know how good it is!

Friendly personal service. A number of free extras like vegetables with olive paste and fresh fruit after dinner. The prices were average, however the portion sizes were huge. Thankfully they offer doggy bags, so I got to enjoy my mousakka twice. Highly recommend this place for local, professional and authentic food.

I have eaten in a few Greek restaurants, this one tops them all, the food is just amazing, literally like eating in Cyprus, service is quick and the staff are amazing been there twice within 3 weeks. Would highly recommend over and over again...

The service was excellent. The hood was delicious, it was very eell prepared and superbly presented. It was also plentiful with everyone eating their fill. I would reccommend this restaurant to all mu friends. It is also able to cater for a big group.
