Taste of India in Highland

We ate a takeaway from Taste of India in Portree, Skye. It was delicious, the curries were very flavourful and flavourful while our sides were equally tasty. They also catered very well for someone with allergies, ensuring there were no nuts or sesame in the dishes ordered and that there was no cross contamination. Overall, we were very impressed with our experience and look forward to returning on our next trip to Skye.

I honestly do not know why this place has so many bad reviews! We went there recently and had a great experience. The staff was very friendly. A younger employee seated us and answered a couple of menu questions which was helpful. An older gentleman took our order and assisted us in picking out some items. We really enjoyed every dish we tried. The food was absolutely delicious and we were pleasantly surprised because we hadn’t read previous reviews. I would definitely dine here again and recommend it to anyone.

Good service by staff but oily food including. There was inadequate heating. In fact it was freezing in the restaurant.

Absolutely disgusting, chicken pakora was some strange part of a chicken I’ve never seen before, the tiny bit of chicken fell out the hard shell batter when you bit into it. The lamb tikka was full of hard fat and gristle that only a sabre toothed tiger could bite through, tiny portions and way too expensive. I took my food straight back to them and told them to bin the lot. Worst so called Indian food I’ve ever had. Doesn’t deserve one star

Mr Mohammed shahnawaz was very rude and I received very bad customer service from him I ordered two chicken karahi first mr Mohammed said it will take 40 minutes than he change his mind and said it will take 1hr.After 1hr when I collected my chicken karahi and bring home I found both container of chicken karahi was half empty with full of onions and there was barely any chicken in it and taste was awful which I paid nearly £35 for it with 4 naans If you want to waste your hard earned money this is the right place to spend

What a terrible attitude from the manager! He treats people differently based on their color and language. He favors white people, treating them as special, while treating Desi people as if they are getting food for free. It's ridiculous behavior towards Desi people, especially considering he himself is Desi. He gives priority to white people and treats customers with a very bad attitude.

The most delicious food I have ever tasted. This place is well worth a visit. Food was delicious, so nice and wholesome. It has come on in leaps and bounds. The manager / owner still pushes the cash vibe, needs to stop that I'd say, but our food was delicious

The owner/ manager of the place is a very rude man. He is a disgrace to Isle of Skye and Portree, he kept asking me and my groups of friends to make the order a takeaway when we sat down to eat in. It looks like he does not prefer any brown people in the restuarant, though he himself is a brown man (what a joke!) I believe it is also because the food is not authentic Indian food and he is just running the place to cheat white people and other ethnicities. Please don't go to this place!!

Good place with good food and prices, came here for a takeaway and was pleasantly surprised (get the garlic naan). This place doesn't deserve the mediocre rating that it has although the manager/owner was a bit iffy I wouldn't say he was rude like some of the reviews say but he was a bit quirky/goofy

Delicious food but service was very slow and the food took ages to come out. This place has so much potential. We have never been able to fault the food here.

Their food was not bad but their service was very very bad. Their way of talking to us was quite disappointing and they made us to wait for almost 1hour to bring our food.

They even brought a space heater to our table, making sure we were all comfy and cozy. And guess what? They’re super cool about vegan diets too! Tons of tasty plant-based options that show they really care about what you love to eat. You’ve got to check it out – it’s like a flavor-packed, heartwarming experience!

We stayed for a night in Portree and went for early dinner in Taste of India at around 7:30. We were a group of people and 2 kids with us. To our surprise the manager told us that they can’t serve us now because kids will cause disturbance to other guests and also recommended us to visit after 8:30 pm. This was utterly disgusting attitude which left us furious.this is first time we have come across any restaurants not allowing families with kids. It felt like racism towards Indians because there were non Indian families who had kids sitting there. I will not recommend this place to any Indians visiting with kids.

1 star only as not possible to rate a 0! A pathetic establishment with extraordinarily rude owner/restaurant manager. The guy straight away rejected our group because we had children. We could see other groups with children seated and the place was at less than 30% capacity but still he asked us to come back later because we were a group with children! Shameful that you run a restaurant in the name of a country that believes in honouring guests like gods and doing this kind of a bias! You are not an Indian restaurant & should stop damaging the reputation of Indian food & people in other countries! Good luck running this joke of a restaurant for long!

This restaurant's service was an absolute disaster. Our group of four faced a nightmare . The staff was shockingly unhelpful, demonstrating a blatant disregard for our concerns. This place urgently needs a reality check on customer service . A complete letdown, owner tried to fight us. Disgrace to Scotland tourism, Isle of Skye and future of humanity.

Overpriced, rude staff, the food is average so I'm not sure why they charge the same as high end restaurants, a main for one person and one drink somehow comes to £25? This is far from average in terms of Indian restaurant prices. Then when I asked if I can have the leftovers boxed up as most places will gladly, I was greeted with the waiter coming back and shoving the smallest carton on my table for me to do it myself in front of the other diners... Ridiculous, this place definitely needs a shake up, you've just lost a local customer

A Disappointing Dining Experience I recently visited this restaurant with high hopes for a delightful culinary experience, but sadly, my visit left much to be desired. The first red flag appeared as soon as I sat down. The cleanliness of the establishment was questionable at best. Not only were the tables sticky, but the glasses provided were visibly dirty, giving a rather unpleasant first impression. The real disappointment, however, came with the food. I ordered food, and to say that they were subpar would be an understatement. The flavors were bland, and the overall presentation lacked any semblance of culinary finesse. It was evident that little care was put into the preparation of the dishes. Adding to the disappointment was the exceptionally poor service. The staff seemed disinterested and inattentive, making the entire dining experience feel like an inconvenience rather than a service. Requests for clean glasses and additional condiments were met with eye rolls and audible sighs. To make matters worse, the owner's attitude was shockingly rude. It's disheartening when the owner, presumably the face of the establishment, contributes to the overall negative atmosphere. In conclusion, my visit to taste of India was a regrettable experience marked by unappetizing food, unclean conditions, indifferent service, and an unpleasant encounter with the owner. I cannot recommend this establishment to anyone seeking a satisfying dining experience, and I sincerely hope that improvements are made to prevent others from having similar disappointments in the future.

Service was rude, food was bland.

Biggest mistake I made was I didn’t read the reviews. First of all the owner or the management doesn’t seem to be an Indian so don’t call this place Taste of “India”. We were welcomed with rudeness by asking to read disclaimer. Without offering a table we were asked to go thru the disclaimer and the menu. With just all these I had no expectations and we decided to takeaway food. Had to wait for half an hour for our food. And when we reached home and opened package we found naan where we clearly mentioned that we don’t want anything that contains egg. That’s why we ordered rice instead of naan. Well, it was again just the beginning. The food looked some veggies cut in big shape and floating in oil. We separated oil and started eating and no surprises here. Food was pathetic. Everything went to bin and we had to make coffee for dinner and sleep with empty stomach.

Not sure why there are so many bad reviews but I can only speak from my experience and I must say, I was very impressed. Firstly, I didn’t find any of the staff to be rude. From being greeted politely at the door through to happily paying the bill at the end, service was served with a sincere smile. Secondly, the food… I had chicken tikka chilli garlic for my main. I’m no expert in Indian cuisine but I’ve had my fair share of Indian dishes and I have to say, this dish was one of the best I’ve had in a long time! The chicken was soft and tender and the taste was amazing! If you like a mid strength curry then I would highly recommend this one! The prices were fair, especially given the location. All in all, a very happy experience and I’m sure I’ll be back one day in the future!

One of the worst places we have visited. They are very rude to customers and before even welcoming they point out to a notice board which says every person must order for a minimum of 10 pounds and the min order value should be 20 pounds. After sitting and trying to order food they ask you to order food at a go. Very arrogant and not something one would expect specially at a food place. Would never suggest it to anyone who likes to be treated well and served good food.

Very average taste. Kababs in the mix grill were not good. Overall definitely not worth the money.

Asked for tap water as Coke was out of a big bottle, was refused tap water ,!£2:95 for a can of pop £6:99 for a bottle of cobra ! Veg curry and rice £17 it tasted like something from a jar . Friends meal he did not eat was way to spicy .,3 meals 1 drink each no starters £75 owner said cash only my friend said I only pay with card accepted it in the end . Restaurant was empty walls were filthy with stains! Young staff lovely older not that friendly and owner on his phone all the time texting. Toilets not clean hall way filthy do not recommend at all.

I have had Indian food all over the world and this is the WORST I’ve ever had anywhere- how do you screw up chicken tikka masala ? The dish tasted like sweet Sugar infused red tomato sauce with absolutely no yogurt in it- I thought that the chef had made a mistake and put sugar instead of salt - I told the waiter that it was really sweet and he said - yes that’s the way it is- if you love Tikka like I do stay away - it’s awful - give me the jarred Pataks ANYDAY! No one in the world makes it this way- I don’t review often but had to post something immediately- I’m big on taking pics of my food but was truly embarrassed to take this one

This restaurant doesn’t even service Indian food. It’s a mediocre and disguised Bangladeshi food.

Mood spoiler..we went around 1:30pm, they make us sit, and later mentioned that they will serve food before closing but we have to stuff our food in 5 mins as their closing hour is at 2:00. Manager was rude he asked us to leave. Definitely not an India restaurant as this is not an INDIAN culture…..

Unfortunately there are not many restaurants in Portree and even after watching such negative reviews we decided to visit this place as we were hungry. We had a really pathetic experience, Firstly we were 2 people and we demanded an extra chair to keep our stuff for which the staff refused and then they took more than 20 Minutes to get the simple order. The staff was not interested in giving spoons and napkins either. Then after eating first dish (which tasted really poor) we asked the staff to change the plates for which they rudely refused and started fighting with us. We had to leave after eating the dish. The owner of the restaurant is really a bad person who doesn't know how to behave with customers in the hospitality sector. Entire staff is pathetic when it comes to handling customers. If I had the option of giving 0 stars I would have given that

Probably the worst restaurant service I’ve ever seen. Avoid at all cost. The people spoil the reputation of Indians. I wouldn’t be surprised if the restaurant runs out of business.

Ok ok ok, So if you haven't booked anywhere else in Portree, this place is great. If you like Indian food, it's even better. In fact, the food is delicious. The staff are charming and helpful. The manager however, is definitely rude and insists that you pay in cash. The food is good though. I'd personally eat here again

The one star reviews on Taste of India are ridiculous. The food is delicious and it is so reasonably priced. The staff are friendly, straight shooting, each have their own role and execute it seamlessly. It was the perfect end to a long hike day and I would absolutely come back here!

We ended up here by default when our reservation at another place wasn't honored (due to one restaurant closing), and you couldn't get a table anywhere in Portree. I'm glad we did because the food and service were excellent! All the starters were great, tikka masala was particularly yummy. Our daughter's first Indian food experience was a big success. On top of that .. while other restaurants in town were steering customers away and acting a bit surly, Taste of India turned no one away, gave great smiling service, and has us coming back for more. Best meal we've had in Portree.

The restaurant has better reviews in town. The staff were lovely and attentive. I found the bill of £44 for a starter, the main course, and a couple of drinks for one expensive. The main Lamb Achar had lime pickle in the dish, which overpowered the sauce and meat and made it very disappointing. The lamb bolta starter was very good. Not sure if I'll be back.

Let me start off by saying the town is very small and not equipped to handle Tourists as there’s very limited parking everywhere. The restaurant itself is small and quaint. The management I felt was very rude to everyone that came in with their strict rules for the restaurant. They have a 10 pound minimum that each person must spend in order to dine in the restaurant. A group of two bikers came in and wanted to sit at a four top table so they had extra space for their bulky jackets, the management refused to give them a four top table and said they had to sit at a two top table. Needless to say, those guest left the restaurant. When we sat down at our table, I asked if they took American Express Card in which they said yes. Once I was ready to pay, the manager kept insisting if we had cash to pay for the order. The food was good.

So many reasons NOT to go here! 1.) Please add other ingredients to your bowls of only nuclear-hot spicy, inedible gruel please. It was so overpowering after a single bite, that while I was sweating, eyes tearing-up, I got unstoppable hiccups due to the overpowering spice...and I'M a person who loves spicy food! 2.) Your customers MAKE your business...each one who entered, including my daughter and myself, had to endure some line of restriction as to splitting payments on separate credit cards or minimum charges, owners outright loudly argued with other potential diners and two men who arrived after riding their motorcycles all day, placed their leathers and helmets on the table set for 4 next to them. Oh no! We cannot have this in this empty restaurant! They were so disgusted they left. I was embarrassed for those restaurant owners. When we paid, the dude behind the counter asked if I could pay in cash instead of credit card. I said, first of all the meal was inedible, and secondly, WHO still uses cash!? I couldn't wait to get back to the States to post this valid, true experience to review. Run as fast as you can away from this horrible experience.

If you are looking for a no fuss place that serves food after 8:30pm in the small town of Portree, it stands up. We had a vegetarian biryani, it was a pleasant surprise. Service isn't the best but it's a good spot for people who can crave for spices in the land of fish and chips.

UNREAL food - honestly. I grew up with Indian food at home and thought this place was super authentic and delicious. Service was also great. May not be the fanciest restaurant but never judge a book by its cover! This place is TWO 👍🏽 up 😁

We got takeaway, was pretty easy to get vegan options. Tasty, well made food, would recommend. Service in the restaurant was pretty poor though, they could easily improve their rating if they just took a tiny bit of effort with good hospitality practices, or even smiling rather than scowling at new customers. Weren’t rude, just not friendly in any way.

A taste of home in Europe. We are Malaysians living in Germany and have been missing good Indian food like we had in Malaysia. This place with its wide variety gave us a wonderful meal which was very affordable. You can only pay cash here but that was not a problem for us. We recommend anyone who has a craving for Indian food to come here.

Worst service and specially being Indian i went to this restaurant but it is not true indian taste as well as owner is not indian. Most worst part about the paintings specially very different msg given about indian cuture. Where painting shown and this paintings are given very wrong impression and wrongly presented indian culture and false information which is very awkward being indian me to go there and i wont visit agiain and its not in real meaning taste of india.

This place was pretty busy when we arrived. Staff was rushed and we never did seem to have a consistent waiter. Food was GREAT and arrived quickly. Atmosphere was lacking; I was facing the bar with all of its trash and mops stacked up on the side.

The food here is actually pretty good, however the staff is weird and the interior of the place is just horrible. Order takeout and therefore get the best thing, the food, without the atmosphere!

we got take away and the packaging was so horrible, reminds me of the indian railways. we had a curry (which shouldn’t really be liquidy in the first place) that was packed like it was it was rice item. It leaked ruining everything else that cover was around. the food that we got was pretty averted too which made the whole experience even more not worth it

Had a great meal at Taste of India. I highly recommend the Saag Aloo and the Rezala Lamb, but there were so many other great options that I could have had 10 dinners there. Wait staff was great - helped explain menu items to us and to those at tables around us. Very attentive. Good bar and drink prices too.

We have often had great luck with Indian food on the UK, and that was our experience with Taste of India. The food was excellent. I had the Rezala Lamb - tasty and not spicy. The Saag Aloo was a bit spicy and also great. The wait staff was very helpful. There was a party of four visitors from Asia and two waiters spent considerable time helping them order. They also were really helpful with the elderly couple next to us. If we weren’t leaving I’d dine there again - so many great looking choices on the menu. Lots of veritarian options for my wife.

Raciones superiores a la media en Escocia y a un precio asequible. Los platos estaban bien sin más (pollo tika masala y korma de cordero), pero el cordero sashlik estaba muy reseco. El servicio regular. El camarero que nos atendió al principio era amable, pero el que parecía el encargado era bastante rudo con los clientes.

One of the waiters was rude, we weren't very hungry but obviously we had to pay a minimum of 10 pounds per person, one of the waiters asked us where we came from, if we were Europeans or not, we told him yes, he laughed as if they were making fun of us, we didn't understand his reaction. We had to prove that we didn't want to order much because we weren't very hungry. Finally we left without eating because we didn't appreciate the welcome or the atmosphere at all. Only a few servers were pleasant. As for the food, we weren't able to taste it to give an opinion. But the service: 0/5.

AVOID! I request all Indians and British tourists to avoid this place at all cost. The staff is ill-mannered. The man at the reception doesn’t know an iota of customer service. As soon as we approached the reception l, he made a face that said ‘oh no, more customers’. Not sure if they treat the British the same way, but he didn’t look happy to see us. We did sit down and then a waiter who couldn’t even speak politely came and asked for order. By that time, we had already lost all interest to have our meal there. I’d rather pick a sandwich from the Co-op across the road than have food here. The staff is a disgrace, and they are definitely not from India. Please don’t spoil my country’s name with your stinking attitudes. Oh and the menu posted on Google has less prices than the one they give at the table. Cons.

The food served here is not of authentic Indian style cooking. The blend of spices used is far from what you would find in any Indian home. If you have cooked or had an Indian meal at an Indian home then this place is a no go for you.

This is not a representation of Indian food at all. Can say this, being an Indian myself. It does represent the food of one part of India i.e. Bengal. Having said that, the food is bland and the flavours are off balance. Wouldn't recommend if you are looking for delicious Indian food.

Had a really nice spicy Naga curry and my partner had a yummy coconut curry. They play it safe with the chicken over here i've noticed with other indian restaurants as well, so it's not always super tender but overall a delicious experience and friendly staff.

Food is good . However seems this guy in the photo dont know how to talk with customers , initially he clearly denied thst you are with baby and come after 9 PM and dont have space . Though space is available . I feel like he dont want asians to enter in his restaurant.

We went to Isle of skye for a vacation, and ended up at this place in spite of bad reviews because it was late and most of the restaurants were closed by then!! Honestly I have never seen any Indian food which tastes this bad, looks terrible! The food color, the taste......omgggg I art ( paintings) on the walls are so creepy. It gave me a Halloween vibe in Spring!! Lol The staff are rude, they act as if they are serving free food and they just don't care because its a tourist town. Go at your own risk!!

The food was delicious and the owner was very warm. It’s a must recommend for everyone who’s interested in eating authentic Indian food. Ok, we arrived late (13h15) and the waiter notified us that we were expected to leave at 14h, could have been politer, but fair enough. We started by ordering drinks: Coke and Orangina were served to the glass, out of a big bottle, which judging by the amount of bubbles left, was opened a few days ago… Of course, the price of the glass of Coke probably paid several times the bottle bought at the nearest supermarket, but Portree is a touristic town so that was to be expected, but disappointing nonetheless. The food arrived reasonably quickly, but there was no way of telling the difference between what was ordered excepted for the tint of spices. The meat all seems to come from the same skewers, repurposed for the dish we had ordered. I did not ordered skewers, but my meat was cut in cubes and pierced by a hole in the middle nonetheless. The only nice thing to say about the food is that we were not sick afterwards, nothing more… At the end of the meal we discovered that credit card was not accepted, although the table next to us being completely cashless insisted enough that the manager finally produced a functioning card machine in the end! While we were leaving the manager and one of the waiter started arguing, we thought at first that it was a rude way to have us leave asap, but in the end the argument became hot enough to be quite credible, with yelling and all that… While arguing the waiter was “doing the dishes” in the main room, just dropping cutlery in a bucket of hot water with a few drops of soap and wiping them straight away afterwards… So, to be bluntly straightforward: do not go in there, even if you are starving! Buy a bag of chips, a can of coke and an industrial sandwich at the nearby supermarket, you will be far better off!

Unprofessional vibes from the minute we entered the place, the manager/owner is rude and only accepts cash payments. Asked to order a minimum of £10 per head if we want to dine-in and eat. The food is delicious, I don't understand the one star reviews. We tried the Garlic and Cheese Naan, the chamcham and the byriani and it was all delicious. Service a little slow but very friendly and helpful waiters. We found a place without booking. Honest prices, excellent quality/price ratio, especially taking into consideration the very high prices of other places in Portree. We paid by card with no problem.

Sono andato a cena per due sere di fila in questo ristorante e sono rimasto super soddisfatto della cena. Le porzioni sono abbondanti e i prezzi sono adeguati. Ci sono ottime opzioni vegetariane e la mia ragazza da vegetariana era molto contenta. Si vede che lo staff lavora sodo, soprattutto perché sono gli unici aperti fino a tardi. Super consigliato!

Lovely and tasty Indian food, especially after a big day of hiking in a Portree that does not welcome guests after 6pm. This place will be open until late and for standard European dinner time. The price is fair. Reccomended.

Restaurant is in a nice place, they were refusing Indians to dine in and only take away, even though they had place they gave tables to others and people with children and most indian were asked to do takeaway. And the person allocating tables was so rude to specifically Indians I Wouldn't recommend this place on that note, I would like some local authority to investigate this, very rude behaviour, Families with children are treated badly.

Hello, the food in the restaurant is great, good, you can see that everyone tries very hard, cheap considering the realities of today's world.

Amazing food. We got a table without reservation. It was shortly before they closed but they still cooked for us. The food is very tasty with great flavours. Very pleased with everything!

Nous sommes allés dans ce restaurant par défaut car les restaurants de fruits de mer étaient complets ou fermés (lundi). Ça nous a dépanné mais sans plus. A noter l insistance désagréable du patron pour payer en liquide !!!

Great Indian food. This one of those places were the taste is spot on! The service was fast and polite. We had the Sahi Nawabi Massala Chicken, full flavor and sweet, the Tikka Massala and the Lime Coriander lamb with rice and garlic naan. Delicious!!!

the service is terrible. the waiter was passive aggressive when we didnt want to order dessert. He got even more angry when we wanted to pay by card not by cash. The staff are racist, and didnt let another indian cast into the restaurant. The staff started to scream in the middle of the restaurant. The worst service I have ever experienced.

The garlic nan was excellent. The lamb rezala over rice was absolutely delicious. The korma with chicken was very tasty. Nice dining room and excellent service.

Lovely clean restaurant and food was excellent, King Prawn on Puri, Mixed Kebab, Lamb Bhuna with Garlic Rice and Pashwari Naan. Service was pleasent, would definitely recommend. Can't understand some of the other reviews, but there's no pleasing some people. Thank you Taste of India 👍👍

After we racked up a bill of over £250 for 11 people and were getting ready to pay they announced that would only take cash. Most of us had not brought cash and we witnessed them taking orders and charging credit cards. We shall never return. Sadly the food was quite good but the service left a bad taste in our mouth.

Horrible food. It’s a Bangladeshi restaurant Run by people from Bangladesh who clearly have no idea what Indian food tastes like!. It’s a shame they have kept Indian name which is so wrong on their part. Worst food I’ve had in my life! People go there only because all other restaurants in portree close early. Only this one is open till late. So no option! Rude rude rudest staff n manager/ owner (Bangladeshi)! Seems like he is sick of his life n hence making other peoples life difficult. He was an angry man! We Indians should boycott this restaurant! Please don’t go!!🙏🏻
