Taste of India in Highland

Our ferry sailing times had changed due to weather and we had to stay over in Broadford for a night, and as we drove up from Kyleakin to Broadford we passed this place which was open. After checking in to our hotel we headed back down in the car, and walked in without booking. The place was busy, as would be expected on a Saturday night, and the clientele appeared to be quite international too. We were given a window table straight away and whilst we perused the menu a couple of beers were ordered. The menu contained the 'classic' Indian fayre, but also a number of seafood dishes and house specials which looked interesting. As is customary, we started with poppadoms and a chutney tray - nothing unusual here to note. We then went straight onto mains - a Chicken Pathia with Chilli and Garlic Naan, a side order of Tarka Dhall. The Boss ordered Tandoori Chicken with a Bhuna sauce and pilau rice - she specifically asked for a Bhuna sauce rather than the regular accompaniment of veggie curry sauce. For me, the Chicken Pathia /Tarka Dhall is used as a benchmark, as I know what to expect. The food was very well presented, and expertly cooked, and the service was fast and efficient. The Naan was really good, just the right amount of charring to it, and very soft and pliable. Not over the top with the chilli, but enough to give a slight burn on the finish and a decent amount of ghee brushed on too. The Pathia was perfect!! A nice combination of heat, and sweet and sour. The coup de grace was the Tarka Dhall though - I have troughed some rubbish in my time in various Ruby Houses around the country, but this example was really sublime. Up there at the top of the list for Tarka Dhall - great flavours, excellent consistency, and had me dipping the Naan bread in more than the main course. I tested the other half's Tandoori chicken, and it was cooked to perfection. Nicely charred, and has decent flavour too. The Bhuna sauce was as expected, and the rice was as you would expect Pilau rice to be. As previously noted, the service was fast and efficient, and our meal set us back about 55 quid, inc a couple of large bottled beers, which is not unreasonable. The sixty-four thousand dollar question is - would I go back? Yes, most definitely. The next time I'm on Skye and in need of a decent ruby, this will be the place. Far, far better, and not to be confused with the other restaurant at Portree of the same name.

The restaurant wasn't really open as it was lunchtime and out of season but they cooked 2 meals for me. Both meals were very good, mine was one of the best curries I have ever had (and I've had a lot!)

I don't understand some of the reviews for this restaurant. I'm wondering if there is another restaurant called Taste of India that people are confusing with this place. We went expecting a rude reception and terrible food but no! The food is great. Really good, nicely spiced and full of flavour. Well presented. The service is nothing to shout about but nice enough, polite enough and efficient enough. And...we witnessed no racism. Addendum. I have since looked at reviews for a few Indian restaurants on Skye, including the Taste of India in Portree. It's most odd, all have a mix of both 5 and 1 stars. The food is described as delicious and disgusting. The staff are friendly and rude. And all of them are racist... I don't get it. Is there some sort of campaign being waged against them, or each other, or something else?

Having visited Skye on business for a couple of days, and after a long (foodless) day, arrived at this restaurant at 8.15pm (Tuesday night) for a well needed meal, which I was looking forward to. There were six other show-ups waiting as I arrived (all of whom were seated at tables when I was there), but I noted 14 free seats, and a good few people winding up their meals, so I was more than optimistic of getting a table. I waited a few minutes (they were busy), and a server came to see me (I assume the owner, as the other servers were in black shirts and trousers, and he was in a crumpled, sweaty looking brown polo shirt). I respectfully asked for a table for one, and he told me he was fully booked. I then asked him categorically if he was booked for the whole night (he closes at 11pm, and I was immediately smelling a strong smell of something that rhymes with "cruel twit"), and he confirmed that he had "absolutely no availability" for the rest of the night. I knew this was a downright lie. I left and called him back on the phone ten minutes later, asking for a table for two, which he offered me immediately. I then explained who I was and asked why I was turned away at his restaurant. He lied yet again, insisting that he had offered me a table at 9pm, when we talked in his restaurant earlier. I called him out on his lie, and he was adamant that he offered me a table at 9pm. if there's one thing worse than a liar, it's a "Cruel Twitting" liar. Absolutely disgusting and frankly cringe-worthy, embarrassing behaviour from him, and he absolutely should be shamed here on Tripadvisor. And precursing some kind of lame, defensive (lying) reply from this "restaurant", I was not dishevelled, drunk, abusive or anything else which would have precluded me from dining in his restaurant. Highly Not Recommended.

On the way to manically isle of skies we found a perfect Indian restaurant with good food , good service and wine imported from Australia and New Zealand

Delicious meal, fast and attentive service. Brilliant recommendation from gentleman taking our food order to give us an amazing variety of curries. The starters were phenomenal, would like to highlight the chicken pakoras that were seasoned to perfection. Ambience was also a 10/10 with the room being full of locals and tourists alike enjoying their dinner!

The rogan josh curry was excellent and full of flavor as well as the chicken jalfrezi. We got there early and we didn't even need to wait that long for our food to come. Staff seemed friendly enough however we did takeaway.

Very bad service. Absolute disgrace to the image of india. The ambiance and food is good but This is actually a bangladeshi set of staff using the name of india for getting business and spoiling the name of indian hospitality with awful service and attitude.

I went there with my family and was quite unpleasantly surprised to see the attitude of the staff, who was coarse to say the least. Even something as normal as asking for an extra plate for my daughter riled the waiter. And it still might have been worth it had the food been any good, but as it turned out, the food was quite bad. Better stay hungry than go eat here. Quite a terrible experience. Would never visit again.

Wir wollten nach unserer Ankunft im Ferienhaus essen und sind kurzentschlossen zu "Taste of India" marschiert. Als wir um 18:30 Uhr dort ankamen waren alle Tische besetzt und es warteten schon andere Gäste; der Manager hat uns jedoch sofort angeboten, uns für 19:30 Uhr einen Tisch zu reservieren. Die Wartezeit haben wir genutzt, um uns im Ort umzusehen und ein Stück spazieren zu gehen. Als wir eine Stunde später zurückkamen, war unser Tisch nach kurzer Wartezeit bereit. Das Essen selber war ausgezeichnet: Typisch indisch eben (schön pikant), schmackhaft, reichlich und appetitlich angerichtet; wir können wirklich nichts negatives feststellen! Die Räumlichkeiten sind nüchtern gestaltet und eher zweckmäßig. Was den Service angeht: absolut in Ordnung! Na gut, die Jungs überschlagen sich nicht gerade mit Freundlichkeit; aber das liegt wohl generell am Charakter der Inder: zurückhaltend & neutral. Ich glaube, das sollte man nicht mit Unfreundlichkeit verwechseln! Uns hat es jedenfalls gefallen und wir waren einen Tag später wieder vor Ort. Diesmal hat uns der Manager wiedererkannt und sogar ein Lächeln geschenkt! Fazit: hier kann man gut essen gehen!

Kyle of Lochalsh is not well served with restaurants, suprisingly. So an extensive but fuitless search for a local eaterie led us to "Taste" across the bridge in neighbouring village. We booked (it was Saturday) and just as well as it was buzzing with locals....

Booked for an evening meal and had no regrets at all. A few hundred yards from Skye Bridge this restaurant has plenty of parking at the front of the premises and on our arrival we were promptly shown to our table which was screened from other diners and the staff all wore appropriate PPE. The food was excellent. We had mixed pakora for starter,which was plenty for sharing. My wife had vegetable byriani and I had shaslik chicken rice and pashwari naan. All dishes were hot tasty and filling and great value for money. Highly recommended if staying in the south of Skye or even Kyleakin or Kyle of Lochalsh.I

This is a steady as she goes family restaurant much frequented by locals and visitors. A varied menu and plenty of vegetarian options. Vegans would need to check if ghee being used.

This was a great stop our first night in Skye! I had the resala chicken and my friend had the murghi masala. Highly recommend both dishes! The vegetable samosas were also very delicious. The host was excellent and made wonderful recommendations! Will be back before we leave!

Had been reluctant to eat here previously due to past reviews, however don't believe everything you read.My husband and I both really enjoyed our meals tonight. I had Cam Cam lamb which was delicious and loaded with tender pieces of lamb. Hubby had chicken tikka pathia which he thoroughly enjoyed. We will definitely be back next time we're in the area.

There were some negative reviews online, but we took a chance and glad we did. We didn’t book but we’re quickly accommodated. Prompt and friendly service. Food was especially good. The vegetable pakoras and samosas for starters were best we’ve ever had. In fact, my husband says this might be the best Indian meal he’s ever had. I had paneer saag and aloo Gobi for my main(2 side dishes) and they were both yummy. Hubby had Chicken Bhuna. Garlic & Coriander naan was fab. The only reason we didn’t give 5 stars was that the ambiance could could be brought up to date and given a bit of warmth (rather than feeling clinical). Another nice thing that happened while we were here was that we overheard a waiter talking to some young university students who were home for the holidays. He knew where they were studying and what they were up to. Impressed!
