Highest pub in the UK, we stopped here on the way back from holiday in Scotland. The road to the pub is obviously very winding and lots of times you slow to see where the road is as you’re driving up and down many humps, hills & bridges. Felt like a rally drive & rollercoaster in one! Cant comment much on the views as the rain followed us from Scotland and hit just as we got out of the car- torrential rain so visibility was just to the car park. Thankfully there’s always a fireplace going to warm you up and the pub had an amazing atmosphere and warmth. Lots of hikers drying out soggy boots & jumpers near the fire. Food was excellent. Booking is essential but we managed to find a free table - going to book a room next time so we can enjoy the dark sky site in it’s fullest with our telescope

The views and location are stunning. The roads, and this I found shocking, despite being in the muddle of nowhere are well maintained, not a pothole in sight. On my road in the middle of a town have potholes big enough to bathe an elephant. Now the pub itself. Its niche, not too new worldly but not too outdated. Nice selection of ales, the staff however not overly friendly or helpful. Perhaps I came on a stressful day. But first impressions count. Now for a pub shrouded in history I will share my future. I won't be returning...

Wanted to check for accommodation and food for group later this year. Pub had atmosphere and music wasn’t too loud. Tables and toilets were clean and tidy. Best bits: Servers were efficient, helpful and friendly. Especially Ellie. Food was very tasty. Better if : the wait for food had been shorter (we waited 45mins) and if there had been a bit more veg and gravy with the brisket. Overall we had a very good experience in a remote location. We will be back.

The pub is interesting and in a spectacular, isolated location. It was quite busy but we had booked a table in advance and were looking forward to our lunch. We shared a starter of garlic mushrooms which was quite tasty. But it was all downhill from there. My husband had the ribs, which he said were good, unlike the chips which were undercooked. Unfortunately I chose the so-called beef bourgignon. I didn't eat much of it ; it was tasteless and watery and didn't seem to have seen a good red wine - let alone been used to cook the beef. The rock hard mushrooms and a couple of bits of carrot weren't the roasted root veg that was advertised. I did mention this to the waiter who eventually got round to clearing our dishes, but got a blank look and shrug of the shoulders. Maybe I was unlucky in my choice but I'd be very reluctant to give it another visit!

The location for me is the only high point, the views are outstanding, but there is really no excuse for charging £19.30, for a white wine and an American size small bottle of coke, when a pint of lager and white wine came to £ 13.60, they don't even scam you like that on mount snowdon.

If this pub was a local and was reliant on repeat customers it would be shut within 6 months. Run for total profit and not customer satisfaction. Stayed for 3 nights over Easter. Parking is a free for all, so even if you have booked to stay above the pub you have to dump your car wherever you can. Room cold heating barely on. Had to wait 15 minutes when checking in as person was on her break! Breakfast 8.30 or 9.30 nothing in between. Someone decided it was a good idea to take out empty beer barrels when the pub had closed on Saturday night waking us up. If you are going to stay, stay for a night in a motor home. You will meet some great people but most said the same thing. Run for the convenience of the management team. When we checked out there was no everything ok, hope you had a nice stay. But the same person greeted us at 8:20 that morning as we walked in to the bar area after packing up the car with “ breakfasts not until 8.30” not a good morning how are you. Food is good however.

Accommodation: Our one-night stay was nothing short of magical. The room was beautiful with amazing views of the rugged moorland, and the highlight was undoubtedly the amazing tincopper bath. Dining: Sunday Lunch: The hearty Sunday lunch at the Tan Hill Inn was a treat. From giant Yorkshire puddings to perfectly cooked roast, we left the table feeling satisfied and content. Evening Fish and Chips: The fish and chips were nothing short of amazing. Crispy batter, flaky fish, and a side of nostalgia—it was the perfect pub meal. Ellie’s warm hospitality made our evening even better. She looked after us all evening, ensuring we felt right at home. Socialising: We met some wonderful fellow guests during our stay. The cozy bar next to the roaring hearth provided the perfect setting for drinks and shots and making new friends. And as the evening unfolded, we were treated to a breathtaking display—the Northern Lights danced across the sky, painting the night with colours we’ll cherish forever. Historic Charm: The Tan Hill Inn has stood the test of time, weathering ice storms, snow drifts, and high winds. Its stone walls hold centuries of stories, from ancient Celts meeting here for fires and rituals to legendary battles nearby. Even Mary Queen of Scots and the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin are rumoured to have visited. Verdict: If you’re up for an adventure, crave stunning views, and want to experience the highest pub in Britain, the Tan Hill Inn is a must-visit. Just be prepared for moorland tracks and unpredictable weather—it’s all part of the charm. We will be back

Food was delicious and well presented. My husband had the pie, peas and mash, however plate did look sparce as wasn't much mash . He asked for chips also which he got free of charge. The giant yorkshire pudding with beef, veg and mash was beautiful, more than enough for me and well worth the money. Location is absolutely fab, the views are amazing. Service was good, pub was clean, no dirty pots left on tables. It was our first time visiting and won't be the last.

Good selection of beers. We had the filled giant Yorkshire puds and couldn't finish them they were so hearty. Very tasty, and the meat was good. Dog friendly and very popular with the canine community so if you don't do dogs in eateries avoid! Other than that all good.

The Perfect 60th We’re frequent Motorhome visitors to Tan Hill and my husband has been coming for over 40 years. So where better than here to organise a surprise 60th for him. As usual the staff were bloody fantastic, the food amazing, the drinks flowed and all 30 x of us had the best time in the Barn. Nothing was too much trouble for Tan Hills team and Donna was a star with the organisation of the night. Some of friends booked rooms or domes and the rest were in Motorhomes. We had a scrumptious breakfast the next morning to soak up the night before and it couldn’t have been better. Special thanks to the manager (sorry I don’t know his name) and to the lovely girl who kept meeting my requests for more chairs! Some of our friends had never visited before but braved the snow and freezing fog to attend - and now they love Tan Hill as much as we do!! Thank you so much for an afternoon/night to remember! We’ve talked about visiting for a long time and finally made it happen but we were very disappointed with service and drinks. We originally planned to have lunch, but we were greeted by a lack lustre guy behind the bar who said the lady serving drinks had just gone out back and he would try his best to serve us, but he was out of practice. The gourmet hot chocolate menu sounded delicious and I chose the Jaffa cake option described as lashings of whipped cream with a drizzle of orange syrup and a Jaffa cake for £4.95. I received an overly sweet hot chocolate from a machine half full up the cup with no accompaniments. After trying a taste my husband took it back to bar, and asked for a cappocino, by then the lady had returned and said “oh what was that?” Hubby replied “it’s supposed to be the gourmet Jaffa cake hot chocolate, but this is how it came and it’s overly sweet”. She just shrugged and served and charged him for the further cappucino which was much nicer, but still from a push button machine. A family who came is not much later ordered a couple of the gourmet hot chocolates that she prepared and they looked far nicer and came as described. Hubby didn’t fare much better with his shandy as he was driving, he said it was flat and didn’t taste nice. Would not return, despite the novelty of being the highest pub in England and the food looking nice that the kitchen had prepared. There were also lots of dogs, more dogs than customers!

Stayed here for two night.s. Tan Hill is in a remote location which I anticipate is beautiful in the summer months. The Inn itself is seeped in history and very interesting. Three areas down stairs with two being very rustic and another a bit more comfortable. The two rustic areas are obviously old with flagstone type floors, wooden beams, a lovely open fire and in the other room a log burger. The more modern room is very pleasant but decor still in keeping with the rest of the Inn. The bedroom we stayed in was lovely and had a reasonably good view. Tea, coffee, water etc was provided and we were able to get more supplies at the bar. The breakfasts were lovely and the evening meals we had were also very nice. Maybe slightly overpriced food and drinks but within reason. The staff were very friendly and helpful and nothing too much trouble. If you’re expecting the Inn to be modern, spotless and minimalistic then this isn’t the place to visit. If you want wall to wall carpets and soft furnishings then you will be disappointed. It’s full of various memorabilia and is a haven for travellers and walkers that come in wet through, dirty and cold. Dogs of all sizes are welcome too so as you can imagine the stone floors are ideal. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the food, staff and general ambiance of the place. Everyone was friendly and we met a lot of interesting fellow travellers to chat to. Would we go again? Definitely if we get the chance even if it’s only as we are passing through.

My husband fancied staying in one of the Domes for his birthday. We had a lovely stay altho the dome was a bit cold with just one small heater. Could either do with a larger one or an extra one. Food is fantastic there tho...

Stayed in one of the dome. Very quirky and very comfortable. One suggestion is maybe a bigger heater for the room for this time of the year. In the pub staff were very friendly and polite and the food was fantastic. All in a great...

Three friends and I ate and stayed one night here as part of a hiking weekend. I can't understand the negative reviews on here - I think perhaps some guests need to take into account the remoteness of the place and just relax and enjoy...

Having passed by the inn on several occasions I’d been wanting to go in and eat for a while. We chose a particularly bad weather day. Everything was shrouded in mist and the rain was falling horizontally! Inside however the fire was lit and there...

Friendly helpful staff, good food and a fantastic bed very accommodating with our dog. Only small drawback was the shower door which we both got stuck in, separately I might add.🤭😀 The handle could do with being fitted the other way round. A small point...

Great experience lived up to my expectations and more. Jamming session on Thursday was good, and the band on Friday night was excellent (Emeraldtheves). The food was good and well presented.

We visited this restaurant June 1st after getting positive reviews from various friends. Probably the best aspect of this visit was the lass who showed us to our table. We booked this place online for a 1pm sitting, we arrived about 12.55 and were taken straight to our table and a waitress came out almost immediately to take our orders. We thought we had struck it lucky, as another four tables were occupied just minutes later. The menu we were given had a very small variety of food to choose from with only 3 choices for starters. I ordered the prawn cocktail followed by the chicken, while my OH, David, had the soup followed by the steak pie. Our drink were brought out 20 minutes later and we waited for our food. We received our starters at 1.55pm, David's soup was barley warm as the waiter had be trying to find our table. We then had to wait ages for our main course. At 2.15pm the people on the table next to us could wait no longer so paid up and left. Then 3 people on another table who were still waiting for their starters left. We were also thinking of leaving when the waitress told us our meal had just come to the pass so we agreed to wait.My meal of roast chicken was passable but with frozen fries and barley warm beans which went left untouched. David's pie filling was so rich he could not eat it, so ate the pastry and the few chips on the plate. While we were eating our mains, 3 people on another table up and left. That meant 8 people from the dining room left without eating. The bill for the two of us came to £50.65 and included a glass of wine and a pint of John Smiths so not cheap at all. For this money we would expect better food and certainly a much better service. Granted the place was busy, but in catering it is all about preparation and a good system in place. There was nobody who seemed to take control and the place was quite chaotic. Sorry, but we will never return.

Went to Tan Hill Inn on 1st June 2021, paid £16.95 for Steak & Ale pie & chips. The pie was full of Steak & was tasty but not very large & not very hot, there were about 12 thick cut chips half raw & again not very warm, the veg 2 slices of Carrot & Parsnip were tasty but again not very warm.Next to the main desk there was a dog bowl but it was empty, I asked the waiter if it could be filled he said ask the waitress which I did after a out 10 mins my wife took the bowl to the toilets & filled it gave our dog a drink then passed it to people at next table with 2 dogs for them to drink as it was very hot unlike the food.Bryan Smart

Service was appalling - took over half an hour to take our drinks order and that was only because we managed to tell one of the passing staff that we were ready. Food arrived around the 2 hour mark and had to be sent back as the pie ordered was cold inside, it hadn’t seen an oven and clearly had come straight out of the fridge. When it did arrive, it wasn’t worth anyway near the price and certainly wasn’t worth the wait - £17 for a cold cheese and onion pie and oven chips!5 sets of diners around us had a similar experience, most complaining about wait times or disbelief when orders were given out to the wrong tables!Menu was very very limited compared to what is online and the QR code system mentioned is broken. I’d have loved to come back, it’s in a beautiful location, but I won’t be back again for service like this
